WHERE location-based GPS app coming to Pre

Palm Pre on Where.com

Well looky there, somebody actually came out and said they’re going to make an app for webOS. It’s WHERE, a company that specializes in location-based services that tie into your Pre’s GPS chip and gives you information about the people and stuff around you.

WHERE in the App CatalogNot only will they be able to do mapping by integrating with Google Maps, but WHERE’s services will give you local weather, news, entertainment, restaurant reviews, gas prices, access to the Yellow Pages, and even hooks into Buddy Beacon to tell you where your other friends with Buddy Beacon are hanging out. And the WHERE app isn’t just coming - it's already here and was sighted in Palm’s quick demo today of the App Catalog at D7 (see right).

Thanks to Mahootzki for the tip!

Oh man! I will be flipping upside down at Universal/Disney the day the phone comes out! Do you think the other 3 guys would mind if I left the park, went to the local Sprint store, got the phone and stayed in the hotel room the rest of the day.......oh wait, I think I can wait three days until getting home. I just hope they still have some Pre's left for me to buy!

Only 8 more days...

impressive

very good app my only issue is if those are the icons with in the app they look like a 5 year old sketch.

Yeah the graphics do look dated. I hope this isn't the final product.

Does anyone know if it works in Canada?

Nice! I love these one stop apps that can do a lot.

This is step up from the fabulous LiveSearch app/service that Sprint Instinct users have enjoyed so much! Great news Palm!!

I can tell you that my 755p on Sprint works fine in Canada - voice, text and data. The roaming charges for voice are pretty ridiculous, even with a Canada roaming plan. Based on this experience, I don't see why the Pre wouldn't work just as well.

Which Yellow Pages does it link with?

So, does the Pre indeed have a GPS chip inside? Or does it triangulate your position from three cell towers? I wondering if eventual Navigation software will require my BlueTooth GPS receiver.

The footnote saying that turn-by-turn nav will require data service still leaves unanswered how the phone will know exactly where it is.
