webOS School to give live "developing for webOS" webcasts

Iowa Code Camp ramps up on tomorrow, and the folks from webOS School are going to be presenting 3 sessions all about programming for webOS. If you can't catch the presentations in person, there's good news: they've decided to offer their presentations at the Code Camp for free, online, in the form of webcasts. Here's what to expect:

* Intro to webOS: 9:00 am - 10:15am
webOS is the newest mobile development platform. Specifically for the Palm pre and pixi, webOS is a mobile development framework based strictly on JavaScript, CSS and HTML. If you have used any of these in the past then you have a head start on developing in webOS. If you want to really jump into webOS or you want a glimpse of what developing in webOS is like, this session is for you. This intro to webOS will cover the basics of the framework, how to get started and the major points you need to know to get off on the right foot.

* Intro to webOS UI Widgets: 10:30am - 11:45am
This session will go over the basics of working with user interface components (widgets) in webOS. It will cover the basic widgets you will use in almost every application and will also cover some of the advanced widgets you will need.

* Intro to webOS Services: 12:45pm - 2:00pm
All applications need data and webOS applications are no exception to that rule. In this session you will learn several types of ways to retrieve and work with data within your webOS application. This will include working with local storage as well as retrieving data asynchronously from servers. And let's face it, it would suck to develop on phones that don't give you access to their cool services like GPS, the address book, calendar and other things. Thankfully you can access these things and more using Mojo's services via webOS calls. This session will cover the basics of making service calls.

In addition to what's listed in the above descriptions, I'm told that they'll be writing two applications to help demonstrate the concepts they'll be talking about: the first is an interactive game, the second is an app that will showcase the services available in webOS.

For those interested in getting their learning on, everything starts tomorrow, November 7th, at 9:00 am Central and registration for the webcasts is, most importantly, free.

Sounds good! I registered. I'd like to learn how to make apps and this will let me know if that's realistic or not. hehe

Registration has closed. They have a wait list.

You can still register for the online webcast here: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/807293593

This is great. Crazy how much time and energy by Palm and others is going into getting more developers working on the Pre. I hope it works, too, and we see more apps hit the catalog.

Registration on the code camp website is closed, but you can still register for the Webinar. Just worked for me anyhow...my guess is the have closed it to in person attendees, but will keep accepting for Webinar only.

So are the UI widgets like we see on android with widgets on the homescreen? Could someone explain?!

So are the UI widgets like we see on android with widgets on the homescreen? Could someone explain?!

This is sweet! I currently don't have any desire to actually write an application (you never know, however), but this will significantly up my game in the webOS arena. I like where things are headed, and am glad I am on the webOS/Pre train.

So are the UI widgets going to be like what we see on Android?! Anyone care to explain?

No.

Widgets, in reference to programming UIs, refers to all the elements that make up a GUI. Essentially, widgets are all the buttons you see, all the check boxes, radio buttons, sliders, drop-down menus, etc.

I wish palm or PRE-CENTRAL would record these web-seminars and have them archived, so people can look them up.

Yeah would be nice to have a recorded session.

Never underestimate just how much of a difference it can make when a development environment is simple and open. I'm extremely excited about what the next year will bring for the Pre.

I too would love to learn this... but I will not be able to watch this...

I get to babysit my beautiful 14 month old granddaughter.

Can the powers to be please record this so that those of us who have commitments are able to watch and learn?

Thanks

I wish they would finish the APIs before they work on this tool.

"This tool" is a webinar that isn't even hosted by Palm. It's not what you think it is.

Well why dont you explain your views on what "you think it is" GRNDSLM! I think it is gonna be people teaching you about the webOS! It says it in black and white.

Now, Im with everyone else. Especially the one who has to watch their grandchild... I have things I need to do also and will not be able to catch the webinar... Will there be a way for me to view this at another time??? I am soooo interested in learning more about the webOS. Some please record somehow and post it up so we can see it too! PLZZZZ!

Err... what? Could you clarify wtf you're talking about? I already told you what "I think it is"...
*"This tool" is a webinar that isn't even hosted by Palm.*

TomD was obviously referring to Palm Ares. Since this isn't Ares... and it's not even hosted by Palm, you need to shut your frickin' yapper.

Gah. I tried to record them, because I couldn't watch anything past the first five minutes due to an appointment. :(

However, my software crashed on me when I tried to save the file, and I lost it all. *sigh* Anyone else have any success? I used Camstudio.

second on the recording. if anyone saved it please share :)
