Today's Nitty Gritty webOS Details: IM, Facebook, Contact Import, and Tasks

Palm Pre Contacts - IM FieldsSo, having had the chance to run through the dozen or so videos from TheInvisibleMan of PalmPreForum.org, we’ve got a few new things to report, plus some new videos. First up is the look at the contacts application where the instant messaging fields have options for AIM, Yahoo, Google, MSN, Jabber, and ICQ. Given the Pre’s cross-program integration, it’s puzzling that only confirmed IM clients are Gtalk and AIM, yet your contacts can have several more entries.

If you log into your Facebook account and import your friends as contacts, the phone will import all of your contacts. While you can manually pair contacts that the Pre was not smart enough to put together, you can’t tell the Pre to not import this person or that person. Additionally, the same happens with Gmail and Exchange accounts, although any changes you make to these latter two will be synced in both directions, and deleting a contact will do the same on the server (you can’t delete Facebook contacts, though through the Facebook site/app you can un-friend them). However, if Palm can get most users to use Universal Search instead of manually scrolling through their contact list, then it shouldn’t be a huge issue (unless you’ve forgotten who you were looking for).

Palm Pre Tasks AppWhen you set a due date for a task,  it will not appear in your calendar. It will, however, appear on that date in your notification bar and will not go away until you’ve told the phone that you’ve completed the task.

We will be keeping an eye on these emulator videos and let you know if we find anything else new while we count down the days until the Pre’s launch.

Thanks to everyone that sent these in!

I think people are making a bigger issue than it really is, you don't HAVETO download your Facebook contacts, there will still be a facebook app (I think) this is just an option of synergy. Whatever Palm will do, will not be good for some...

Why are people afraid to see their Facebook friends in their contacts list? There will not be duplicate entries if you manually input the contact and then the FB friend is then imported. The swipe scrolling is so fast, finding a contact shouldn't be anyone's worry. Having a keyboard makes finding someone almost instantaneous anyhow... Imagine if there was not physical keyboard, iPhone losers! Haha, jk

I would still like to see some details on whether or not it imports ALL gmail/google contacts, or just the explicit "my contacts" portion. I don't need every single person that I've emailed to be on my palm pre.

If you use Gmail, you should see that every person you have ever emailed does not become a "contact" per se, but Gmail does save addresses/names hidden from your contact list for quick future use. Anyone with an @gmail.com address automatically becomes a contact, others you must manually tell Gmail to create a contact for. Therefore the Pre seemingly would only auto-import your true Gmail contacts, and not just anyone you happen to email.

The point of Synergy is a make available contact info the you have in Facebook, Google, etc. If you don't want a contact on your Pre, why would you leave it in Facebook? The place to manage Facebook contacts is on Facebook.

Yes and no. I agree mostly, but some of the account types let you manage contact from the pre and then syncs back to the account's source. So it would be nice to be able to remove a facebook contact on the pre and have it "un-friend" them when it syncs to facebook.

Not an issue for me, but I can see where some might find it a tad disappointing.

i understand that having the physical keyboard makes finding contacts with universal search that much easier... how is it that you are all missing the point?

there are simply people on facebook that i do not have a need for in my phonebook. people i went to high school with that friended me because we went to the same school? not necessary. all the random people i went to college with and met maybe a few times? again, not necessary.

i would really like to use this option for facebook sync, as automatically having picture i.d.'s and information about the people i care about is a huge plus... so much so that if i do end up getting this phone (and it will probably be the case, i just need to physically feel and use the keyboard for myself) i have already set up a brand new facebook account so that i can friend only the people i want synced with the phone.

Will you not be able to remove FB contacts from your phone-contact list? The deletion will not be reflected on the FB website. Quit complaining!!

i have already set up a brand new facebook account so that i can friend only the people i want to it to sync with the phone.

I like this approach.

A POSSIBLE SOLUTION!!

Why not create a contact and call it Junk/Hidden etc.
and link ALL unwanted contacts to it. This way they will not appear in the full list. The question remains how many contacts can be linked into one entry.

I am rediculously excited...does anyone know if the pre accidentally combines 2 people with the same name, if there is a way to separate them....say you know 3 John Smiths, will it know which one is the correct to sync with a gmail account? Interesting

You actually know two people with the same exact first and last names?

I know three...

wow, haha

I know a few as well.

From what someone said, the Pre compares phone numbers, email addresses--maybe street addresses and IM handles too--and if those come out the same, it determines that that's the same person.

Now, if you know two people with the same name who work at the same place and the only contact info you have is the work number, you're probably out of luck. Of course, though, what are the odds of that?

I would think that they will add Yahoo & MSN IM support soon.

Can you search contacts through parameters other than name. On my old Psion, for example, I would put a note in my contacts such as "very tall" "in science class" "scar on face" or something that I could remember about the person. Then when I would search for a person, I could also type in "scar" and it would show me the person that has the note "scar on face." What I'm asking is can the Palm Pre search through fields such as notes in addition to name?

The iPhone also has fields for those IM accounts even though it also doesn't support them. Not really all that strange.

You can start typing the company name and it will filter...so just use the company name for those notes
