webOS 1.4 coming in February with built-in Flash, video, etc

PalmReady for an update? webOS 1.4 is coming in February, and its bringing along a lot of goodies. First you can expect to have Flash 10.1 built-in, though the beta should be available soon from the App Catalog. Second, there’s video recording. Third, there’s the standard upgrade deal of better battery life, faster performance, and all that jazz. But Flash and video recording? That’s big.

I love you Palm!

Loving it

Ho'olaulea!

this is outstanding. Happy to have a pre today.

nice :)

w00t!

(Mostly for video recording. Whether flash is useful or not on a phone that's already plenty slow is TBD.)

Yes it is, if only if it makes dedicated music apps redundant. All of last.fm, tunesBag, imeem etc. accessible without waiting for them to release an app. (I am of course assuming that streaming audio using Flash works as intended). And in general for breaking down another barrier for what part of the web was seamlessly accessible in your hands.

Surely a dedicated app would be kinder to your battery, though.

Speaking of being kinder to the battery, so far with 1.3.5 I haven't seen any difference.

ditto. My 2600 battery arrived yesterday. 10 hrs. so far, streaming radio for 3 hrs, heavy web for 2, 1 hr of phone use, probably 1 hr of other use...and 35% battery left! Using Battery Monitor app biggest drain I had was 9%/hr.

I seriously doubt any update will help battery life. Maybe in the lab, but not in the real world. Kudos to Sedio...plus the new back cover has GRIP!

I've seen a huge difference in battery performance. From what I read, it was better battery performance when you were in areas of poor reception. This Wednesday I went the whole day without charging my Pre, then I had to rush to teach a class after work, and never got time to charge the phone before class. I work in the basement of a building designed to be a bunker and get no signal while I am teaching. I was used to have no battery left by the time I exited my class. I looked at my phone and still had about a 60% charge. What an improvement.

Not all web-based music mongers are going to release apps, though. International music sites, for example, that I care about.

yes it is....and for all the people out there who keep jumping on and off the wagon, remember palms been in this game longer then, apple, a google, and a htc. So threat not Palm is listening, as you can see with the 7 updates since launch. Palm is long from dead and Ill be the first to point out before this update, and after this Web Os devices, on sprint, verizon, and AT&T are the best phones currently available. That goes for a Nexus one, a front flip back flip whatever that ish is, and whatever new Iphone apple brings out. The king is back can palm have its crown back please.

Did they ever say Flash in 1.4? I thought all they said was video definitely in 1.4 and Flash "soon".

flash in beta in app catalog

Truly proud to have been a believer in Palm. I think the iPhone's going to have to pull something damn special to keep up, and I'm honestly not sure if it will. Up the Pre!

Well, I'm sure Apple will throw some seriously cool punches this year.

Right now, it's still Palm that's catching up, but the tables could turn completely with the next generation of hardware.

talking about "the turtle and the rabbit race" Arrogance is iphone's worst enemy!!I hope they keep it up.

I can't wait for this update! :D

Palm really hit the ball out of the park today imo.

Someone help me with this decision: Palm Pre Plus or Nexus One w/T-mobile. I'm currently a customer w/T-Mobile and I'm so excited we finally got a great phone (nexus) and the 3g has been upgraded to 7.2 but I've been waiting for the Pre Plus to go to Verizon for months now.

Pros for Staying at T-Mobile:
Nexus One, 7.2 speeds, Huge screen, Google and 20k apps, Bigger ecosystem.

Pros for Pre w/verizon:
Great webos, palm, keyboard, pinch-to-zoom

Help. Dont be bias

Just try answering email while uploading videos and surfing PreCentral on the Nexus One. Go Palm!

@jrey86 Not being biased (as much as possible) for you... but the most exciting thing about the Pre is the growth of the platform. Yes, the Nexus One with Google gives you a huge app store in place, but it doesn't have the excitement that the WebOS community has going. I've had the G1 and Hero, but have never had as much fun with a phone as I have had with the Pre. This fun mostly comes from being a part of the excitement of days like this. Yes, I miss some of the toys of Android phones, but after using WebOS I find it a huge step backwards when I use a co-worker's Android-based phone (or iPhone). WebOS is truly THAT good. I've owned phones all the major US carriers and have had almost all of the 'top' smartphones. This is the only one that I would have a hard time giving up!

@zullnero, the homelessguy (it must be the recession) and all others who have helped with my question, thanks. I've not switched for months because of the Pre, but with the hype of the Nexus One, I almost changed my mind. I'm telling you Google is great at building hype.

Palm Pre, here I come. Well, whenever Verizon launches it.

jrey86, i agree completely with HelloNNNewman, I have used both webOS (pre and pixi) and android (hero) and android really just doesnt compare in the slightest. android may have more apps, but that is the only thing it has over webOS.

With no bias...I'm loving my switch from Verizon to Sprint and using the Pre. When I wanted to replace my old phone with Verizon, they nickel and dimed me and forced me to "make do" with a Centro with a dead backlight, or pay out of the pocket for a new one. Sprint didn't ask questions, just overnighted me a replacement Pre. The Sprint plan is much cheaper each month, too. I can't stand Google's data mining and targeted advertising on my desktop...I'd like at least one platform where I can be free of that, and I get that with Palm.

I'm also concerned, as a smartphone developer, about Google's design in regards to the app limitations and memory usage. I don't see a lot of value in voice recognition for filling out fields...normally I have a hard enough time finding a quiet place to just make a phone call. Not to mention...when I upgraded from my Treo years ago, I decided I didn't want a device that was bigger than that. The Nexus may be thinner, but it's still too long for me. I'd rather have the biggest screen usable on as small a device as possible with top of the line smartphone features. And you're going to be typing a lot, it's a smartphone. You'll thank me when you realize how much better and faster it is to type on a real keyboard than a virtual keyboard. It's generally at least twice as fast or more. The Nexus just seems to have a few nice hardware improvements that Palm will most likely mirror in their next phone...but the stuff they added to the OS feels kind of like throwaway "wow" stuff...but ultimately doesn't add that much value.

Are you anti-sprint for some reason? Their plans are a lot cheaper and really the "old" pre is just fine unless you plan to use it as a media player. I'll admit right off the bat though that Sprint's coverage can be lacking. For example, I previously had a treo, and when I lived in Pittsburgh I would be unable to get a signal in the cathedral of learning (big stone skyscraper thing) with sprint but got a perfect signal when I roamed on Verizon. Thus I had to set my phone on roam only (which you can do on the pre w/patches) while at school and remember to switch it back when I left as sprint can get bitchy and cut you off if you use more than 1/2 your data/minutes on verizon's network (they lose money so it makes sense).

Currently I have to do the same thing at the University of Wisconsin's medical campus. If I leave my phone on normal "automatic" mode it keeps switching from sprint to roaming(verizon) when I am in the buildings and kills the battery. On Verizon's network I get 3 bars, so, if sprint did not have the roaming deal with verizon, I'd definitely switch companies.

If you do get bad coverage in your home just get an Airave. It rocks. The only caveat though is if you fileshare/bittorrent make sure you limit your upstream bandwidth. Otherwise you'll be able to hear calls, but your callers won't be able to hear you.

I live in the outskirts of Phoenix and I get a 22% discount with verizon. I don't dislike sprint at all but verizon also lets you upgrade every 10mths, I believe.

cool, that's a great discount. It is super easy to get a smaller one on sprint. 10% if you do your banking at a credit union (pretty much any credit union works) and 15% (can't combine them, obviously) if you work in a "public service" field which they don't really even check (anything from bus driver to a social worker works). All I had to say to get that discount was that I was an AmeriCorps member who worked with the homeless, they didn't ask for a paystub or any proof, not that I would encourage someone to lie about their occupation.

I receive a 25% discount currently w/ my banking/securities employer. Can't argue at all.. makes the 450 minute data plan only $53 or so :} on Sprint.

I also Live in Phoenix and Verizon doesn't allow you to upgrade every 10 month unless you are special. It's new every two and is not as much as it used to be...

I have been with verizon for over 7 years. I'm tired of the jacking of the prices. I pay 161.91 a month for 2 phones. This is with a 17% discount one is a Centro other is a voyager. Voyager only has 10 bucks for the unlimited in network messaging and 500 outside network

My centro has a data pack of 29.99.

I'd hate to see my price with 2 Pre's

I think may base cost (pre employer discount) is about $66 (tax included) for 450 min, unlimited data and text, unlimited mobile-to-mobile (any network) and included turn-by-turn nav.

I'm pretty sure that 2x that is cheaper than what you pay.

I currently have a Pre and Blackberry tour for the wife and pay $107 per month with full insurance on Sprint. Full data, SMS Navigation and tethering (mytether) Since Sprint's plans cannot include tethering, you can be charged extra for using a hack. I have exceeded my data cap many times and never have seen a charge for it.

Been with Sprint for over 10 years....never had any problems and always had great service where others had none. Pay about 190.00/month with 4 phones(2 BlackBerries,1 Pre,& Rumor) all with insurance,1500 shared anytime mins., unlimited mobile to moblie any network, unlimited text, data, pics...you name it!

@jrey

Um... Isn't the program called New Every Two? Correct me if I'm wrong. I was with VZW for 5 years before I switched to the best service there is, aka Sprint.

Old pre is very good, just downloaded Sims 3 and NFS and they both run fast and great!!!

@jrey86

The way I look at it is to compare the OS's, just about everyone agrees that WebOS is the best OS out there. In my experience with HTC, they always put crappy video apps on their devices, in the demos I've seen of the Nexus One, the video app looked good, it remains to be seen if the video recording on the Nexus One will work the same in the real world. I currently have the Homebrew "Precorder" app on my Pre, the frame rate is fantastic, so myself and others who have the ability to record on their Pre, know Palms new video recording app will be top notch.

As for "7.2 speeds", I guarantee that you will not even see have that speed on T-mobile!

yes for @sumit flash will be available via beta this month from the app cata then for web os 1.4 flash 10.1 will be intergrated into all the Web Os phones.

Well, you are ALMOST correct. If you review the CES announcements, they made it quite clear that Flash will NOT be available for the Pixi.

Not only video -recording-...but EDITING. You can edit the videos you record on your Pre/Pixi.

...and upload them to FB, youtube, mms, email.

Voice Dialing??????????????????????????? The most basic phones have this! This should be included! Everyone got all caught up in the Flash and video because of the iPhone, but voice dialing is still needed!

 I never used it on my WinMo device. Voice is not that important.

would you like some cheese with your whine...nobody cares about voice dailing when it compares to all these new additions to webos...I've had voice crap features on a bunch of my previous phones and barely if ever used them mainly because of the hassle it is to have em pulling up the wrong data...get a Android if you care so much about voice dailing ingrate! And for the record webOS is evolving faster than any current mobile phone OS available right now if Palm keeps rolling out updates for webOS at this rate the next wave of Palm hardware will be hard for any competitor to handle! That's my 2 cents

Frankly, I couldn't care less about voice dialing BUT with voice dialing comes a microphone API which would mean Shazam on WebOS. Now that is one app I'm dying to have and would pay dearly for if it were available. No microphone API, no Shazam.

I have to think that with C/C++ development capabilities, there *must* be a way to get access to the mic. And once you do, if you have the power to run a game, you certainly have the power to run Shazam. I think its just a matter of time at this point before it happens... hopefully on the order of a month or two.

To quote you directly, "Nobody cares" about your 2 cents.

I've had smartphones for about 6 years now, and I can't recall once really using voice dialing. With the Pre, I find it a lot easier to just open the phone, type in a name in universal search, and make the call. That said, it wouldn't take all that much to implement, I'd bet, to voice activate the universal search and add in commands like "dial" or "lookup". I wouldn't be surprised if that feature showed up suddenly in some release where Palm had extra time on their hands and wanted to squeeze a feature in that they could advertise.

People like to talk about voice-dialing but very seldom people get to use them, yours truly included.

With a "real" keyboard, I don't see myself needing voicedial (I refuse to be a headset wearing borg). It is super easy to set up quickdial hotkey's. With 26 of them, calling my frequently called numbers is a piece of cake (hold down "p" to call my parents, "k" to call the wife (her first initial), "j" to call joe, etc.).

Plus palm always likes to leave niche features like these to developers. I would expect an app that does voicedialing within a year.

Good grief, people. Do you have to jump all over someone's case just because YOU don't agree with the comment? Wanting voice dialing is certainly a reasonable request. Does anyone know if the new SDK has support for mic/voice?

Normally I would care less, but the laws are changing where I live. If you even seem like your texting you will be ticketed. With voice dialing I dont have to touch the phone while driving! Voice dialing is only important for driving. Whats the point of a bluetooth headset if I still have to use my phone to dial. Might as well just put them on speaker phone.

Wanted to clarify I'm talking about while driving.

I agree; I really miss voice dialing which I had on both my Blackberry Curve and Motorola Q. I also would like to see voice recognition so that Palm can have an app like dragon dictation for the iphone. However, I am not holding my breath for either of these two developments.

Yes, but will it have FlashBlock?

Dont install flash.

The subject of this thread mentions "built-in flash" which implies that not installing it won't be an option. What I want is the ability to view or not view Flash as I decide, not the web site designer decides. In other words, the same flexibility that I currently have with Firefox and the Flashblock plugin.

Hopefully Palm will add an option to turn Flash on or off in the web browser preferences page like they do right now for toggling JavaScript, Cookies and Popups.

im jonesin it so much that i got the shakes like a dope fein

Palm.. i love you! lol

Thanks for continuing to improve the device, unlike other phone companies who produce and forget and move on to the next one..

*thumbs up*

I hope that Canada gets paid apps by the time the games are available.

Then again, I'm sure there will be enough homebrew open source games to keep me happy.

The games are up on the catalog now... except i can't see them because Canada doesn't have paid apps :(

Doesn't 1.4 seem a small number for such a significant update? Wondering what kept them from labelling it 1.5?

I'm really happy I bought a Pre!

4 comes after 3 :-)

I thought I was the only one thinking that!

Integer versions (1.0 to 2.0) are huge. Tenths are not so huge (1.3 to 1.4). Hundredths (1.3.1 to 1.3.5) and thousandths (1.3.5 to 1.3.5.1) are generally bug fixes and minor bug fixes, respectively. But jumping to .5 is usually a bigger milestone.

Hmmm... Since I know Palm knows this, I wonder what they have planned for 1.5????

Wow, I got excited just typing that last sentence!!! (Maybe I need a life!)

for Jrey its all a preference if you like the android Os the widget system then Nexus is the way to go, but if you like a open OS thats clean like a iphone, that can multitask and is being backed now by major companies for development Id say the pre. Remember a phone can have a 3gig in there but if the OS is a slave to the CPU, like the Nexus and all android base phones are it means nothing. Palms been in the phone biz for years remember that before apple, and google. Like is said its a preference go to a store and try each out and see what would work best for you. Also remember apples has over 100K apps as do winmo they actually have over 400k freeware but if most of them are just fart noises or the same type of app over and over again whats the use of hundreds of thousands of apps. As long as the essentials are there, and a good amount of games thats all you need. Quality not quanity

iphone dosent have flash and wont be getting it homie due to disputes with apple and adobe.

I am so glad that they won't be getting it.At least,Adobe have the guts to stand up against apple. The controlling freak company!
@:Iancarr27

What about GPU enabled UI

Let's hope the WebOS 1.4 performance improvement isn't like the nearly discernable incremental improvements seen so far. The GPU is being enabled for these new games like Need For Speed. Sure would be a shame to not use it for simple OS things like smoother scrolling etc.

I think there's some telling text on the Palm developer site right now... it talks about the new PDK, the thing that gives you native capabilities... in one paragraph they say they are working to give all applications, meaning those built with web technologies, the same sort of performance boost.

That to mean means that (a) they are working to build a JavaScript wrapper around the native capabilities so you get things like GPU and audio and such up in the JavaScript world, and more importantly it means (b) since most of webOS is built this way, THAT is when I'd expect to see significant performance improvements across the board.

I'd also guess this isn't TOO far off... thinking like later the first half of this year... I'm not anticipating an SDK bump that provides these sorts of new APIs and that huge chunks of the overall UI will take advantage of those (it might be as simple as using that stuff under the covers and not actually having to modify any existing code, depends on how they do things).

That's my guess, but it's nothing more... but, I think that text, which you can go read for yourself right now, pretty strongly hints at something like that in the not-too-distant future.

Guys..is..is it wrong if I'm a little turned on by this?? It's official, I have a boner!

Oh that's good news!! I thought I was the only one =) lol

Ok. That's really an image I didn't need. I wonder what kind of drugs I can use to get rid of that.

If it lasts longer than four hours then please seek medical attention.

Yes, it's wrong. (And me too!)

Right there with you.

"Smartphones are sexy."

Now I understand why they say that!

LOL

Apps have landed

GAHHHH... Im banging on the door and the App Cat wont open the door! Its so flooded! Its like when someone wraps a gift... but instead of wrapping paper they use duct tape!

@Canteenboy:they can wrap mine with duct tape or toilet papers for all I care, what inside that counts.LOL'

jeha 1.4 update in febuary for you, and 1.3.5 in march for Germany -_-

i also agree with the aboved mentioned that the update 1.4 also helps intergrate and smooth out the OS. With the GPU fully enabled and applied correctly it would take alot of the work off the CPU, and allow for better phone performance, as well as overall battery life.

Fantastic news Palm. Absolutely loving the Pre. Keep up the good work. Can't wait for this update and paid apps in the UK!

1.4 in february? I wish. In Germany we're still on 1.3.1 q(-.-)p

Yep, and the way Palm dealt with european users in the past I doubt we will see an update to 1.4 before the end of march. :(
If they really want to attack Apple and their AppStore, Palm still has a long way to go.

This bums me out as well, but I think this has more to do with O2 policies then Palm. They have to approve the update and seem to be very slow with this. O2 should get moving! Bell's got their update out.
Since they already stated EU paid apps for March, I don't expect the 1.4 update before that either...

On the upside, by the time we get the updates, most bugs have been ironed out and Preware is up to date!

We didn't get 1.3.5 in Canada until Yesterday, by then I had already doctored my Pre with the Sprint webos.tar. That's the real beauty of the WebOS open system. No more waiting for 'The Man' to tell you its ok to update, patch, hack, crack your phone.

From now on, when American's get an update, I get it, except for the paid app store of course.

All Pre's run on the same webos.tar files, so if you want what they have just go and get it.

I've just peed myself eight times over!!! I'm so freakin overwhelmed right now!!!!

I'll pee myself when they add expandable memory! Until then I'll just suffer with an irritable bladder and keep hopping from one leg to another :)

hehehehe at that point i would've stopped breathing and past away! omg I'll be the first in line when i can stick a micro SD card into a webos device!

Dear sprint,

I would love to unload some money from my bank to yours but i am not able to access your app catalog. What gives?

Dear Canteenboy,

We would like to have you unload some money from your bank, but we do not have an app catalog. But we are sure that Palm will take that money.

Sincerly,

Sprint

@CountryDevil

touché... that is all

don't think so! palm wouldn't take money from Canada and europe.

yes they would.

I know in Canada what's @ issue is regulations which prohibit foreign companies from easily doing business with customers in Canada. A CRTC like dark chamber where American and Foreign products are scrutinized and rejected on a daily basis.

Microsoft, Sony, Apple, etc. All of their online stores were delayed, obstructed, and compromised as a result of our bassackwards regulatory system.

We have Universal health care though so you take the good with the bad.

@felix.jc:I guess you're right! I just voiced my opinion out of frustration.
After the 1.3.5.1 updates in canada I should be happy and looking for the next big 1.4 eh?
I guess our bureaucrat red-tape works like their post office too,eh?lol'

OMG!!! Have yall played Sims3 yet?!!! OMG!!! Palm is doing a OUTSTANDING job!!! This year will be great and for us Palm diehards, we knew it!!! Palm is the Great Grandfather to ALL smartphone companies and they know what they're doing.

agreed! but I'll humbled myself and please tell me what is OMG?!!!thank you.
oh,my great grandfather!lol'
@Predator-1

downloading asphalt 5 now is running slow due to the many downloads im sure. Be patient people because the APP cat is getting slammed right now with downloads I suggest to try back alittle later when its not so busy.

Please bring back Touchstone light sensor support!!!!

What is that?

I own 3 touchstones -- was there a feature removed recently?

i think these announcements are great and i am really excited about it all, but, once again, they are waiting, and making us wait. sure, the anticipation has been built, but why not have this stuff up and rolling and ready to go? this is all stuff that we have all been expecting and most people have been complaining about.

palm is catching up, but rolling slowly while doing it. the longer they keep waiting for things, the longer it gives the competition to improve and pass you by again. i understand they are small and things take time, but consumers want their stuff now...people that are buying phones right now need to know they can get this stuff right now when they open their box, not in a month or two...this is why the iphone succeeds so much...it is ready to go...i think palm gets it, but are just slowly acting on it

great updates, and i will certainly enjoy them fully....but pick up the pace...i love my pre and i dont want it dead anytime soon

I don't think you should own a Pre, we are early adopters, when you bought the phone you should have looked at the specs, the fact that Palm is bringing these updates this fast is amazing. You should explore other phones in my opinion.

@daforrda: it took iphone 3g 2 years to implement simple copy and paste, bluetooth and still no mms.The iphone 3Gs 3 years to get video recording( do they have flash in the camera yet or zoom?)and still no Multi-tasking.So,go figure?

talking to you people is like talking to the pacquiao mayweather nuthuggers...there is no reasoning, you either have to praise it or you are a loser.

palm has flaws, and a few new updates are not going to save it.. go read the posts not just here but also in the forums...people are crying about build...this and that...boofucking hoo...they had better release a new device that will satisfy the masses, because we here are the minority.

i love my phone, i would be severely disappointed if the went down the tube, but the fan boy nuthugging ways are ridiculous. palm is not a perfect company and there are problems with the device...recognizing this, as they have so far, is the key to their continued success. i dont deserve the phone...maybe not...but you certainly dont, because apparently you want them to keep moving at this stagnant pace and the company to fold. all people want is for their shit to work...you are a fan boy that thinks everything is peaches and cream. how about you ask our

thanks to precentral for being so great...and fuck all of you nuthugging iphone wantabees...good luck palm...i am going to watch in the back ground now

Woah! Overreach much? Not everyone who defends Palm is a fanboy. Comparisons to other devices are completely fair. It's not to say what Palm should or shouldn't do, and it doesn't mean Palm is the best company ever to be incorporated on the face of the Earth.

Just that ALL phones have pluses and minuses, and some people don't seem to be aware of this. Yes, Palm has flaws. So does Android. So does iPhone. So does BlackBerry. So was WinMo. And you look at the forums for each platform and I guarantee you'll see people blowing the flaws of each platform out of proportion. And you'll also see the fanboys who refuse to acknowledge any flaws.

EVERYone needs to just relax a little bit.

somehow my phone notified me that i have software update. i dont have any means to post pics but it happened just now by the way i am also downloading Asphalt(need for speed)wierd ill download the software update see what it does if it gives me video

No doubt, that 2600mAh battery is calling my name.

I am very pumped, within the next 60-days I will have 80%+ of the upgrades I have been wanting from Palm.

Now bring on the visual voicemail guys.

Update in feb? Us in the uk are still watign for the latest update you guys in the usa got a few weeks back.

I love my Pre. WebOS for life!

i love/lust everything about my pre..
that being said.. keyboard should have be SIDE slideout, and cases/covers break after a week.. Can otterbox figure it out?
besides that.. no complaints? well worth the money. and the cheaper plans.

Hmm, Need for Speed or Asphalt 5???

Agreed... I read the reviews on Asphalt5 and am going to wait for NFS to show.

Im buying Asphalt 5 now.... when is Need for Speed coming?? I'll play both.. we have 3D GAMES Now! Didn't know I'd see this big of an improvement soon! YES! WebOS FT-MF-W!!!

This is great news, but when are they coming out with voice dialing?

Get ready to be labeled a "whiner". Someone else already was. I agree, voice dialing should be easy enough to implement. Seems odd that it hasn't been a feature included in WebOS.

i would rather have voice texting instead.

Those saying Voice Dialing is not important obviously don't live in a state where you NEED a handsfree device while driving or you will get a ticket. Living in California, having phone in hand trying to dial someone could land me a $150+ ticket.

Maybe you should be focusing on the road and not on who you are going to chat with for your 3 hour trek through dense traffic.

And maybe you should realize that people use their phones as their work phones and not make stupid generalized comments just because voice dialing means nothing to you.

for the comment above do you remember the first iphone, i do i had it when ig first came out paid 699.99 for it, and it was missing a whole lot of stuff. Though it was revolutionary most people didnt complain and after a year when they finally did a update it they gave us very little. Palm has been in the game longer but not as much money as apple, or microsoft, or even google in that matter. what they have though is smarts, the first company to do it, (touchscreen) and it takes them longer for the updates, some people like you think are important, but they are just one company with a small crew at hand. I think they've done a hell of a job expressing our concerns with the most updates any company has done in a 6 month period of time. Also palm released a beta pre in june on sprint, no doubtly was unfinished but it needed to get out there to stop the bleeding. So calm down I understand we will always be ungratefull but just understand they're doing the best they can and as fast as they can, and i commend them for that you should too.

understand that that was years earlier...this is now, and most if not all of the droid phones and the iphone are coming with all of these features out of the box...i understand that webos has some better capabilities but they are never going to be seen if they dont get these things updated faster...things like video and voice dialing are all standard on regular phones, not just smartphones...they rushed the phone out a little early to try to capitalize on some of the hype...the phone was not ready. imagine if they had launched the phone with all of this on it? do you think there would have been near as many complaints about the hardware (which i personally have no problems with, i am careful with my phone, but i dont baby it by any means...and i have dropped it from 6 foot and had no cracks, dings or scratches, no wobbling in the slider no rickets...i think it is like any product, some are going to be better than others...some people just nit pick more than others)

like another poster said, i am not going to give palm a pat on the back for soemthing the phone should have been equiped with to begin with. this is stuff they told us it could do to begin with yet they made everyone wait 7 months to do it, well make it 8 and the people outside of the US are still waiting for a lot of it and a lot more

People on here complain that apple gets by because of the diehard apple people...but i think palm has some of that reputation as well...and that is fine, but we cant have it both ways.

by the way, i was not complaining about getting this stuff, only that they should have already released it...i love the phone, and have been happy and will continue to be happy with it, they are just moving slow, small or not!

It's not as if Palm had this stuff ready and is holding back on delivering just to tee us all off. They are almost certainly working as hard as they can to get all of this ready, and have been doing so continuously for quite some time.

This isn't to give them a pass. It's just that so many people complain about the delays as if Palm is doing it ON PURPOSE.

until now, they still haven't evolved into anything beside a extra"S" and 100,000 apps.
@Iancarr27.

Finally these aholes at Palm release what should have been an out of the box experience.

No need to glad hand these mofos for doing their job...

This is an entirely new OS, and has been in consumer hands for about 6 months... I'd say they're doing pretty well

Agreed! There's always one or two in the crowd who make junior-high comments like this. People don't realize how incredibly aggressive Palm has been with this new platform - more so than Apple ever has... What they have done in the past 6 months has been nothing short of amazing when you think of what is involved. Just because people can't see everything going on behind the scenes, they think Palm is lazy and not doing what they should have at initial release. Dumb. They forward momentum this company is showing is astounding!

Junior-high comments? Only those that accept the norm are those that are satisfied. To the contrary, of your poor assertions, Palm has not been aggressive. Rather its widely accepted and acknowledged that Palm has been slow to act, behind schedule, and has failed to put the resources behind WebOS until the hiring’s of Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer.

Even with those hiring’s they are behind schedule which means they have not solved the issue of devoting the necessary resources to at least get back on schedule. To insert a bit of Curb "Having said that" it’s apparent that Palm is not close to being considered "aggressive".

Geez, dude! Kicked any kittens lately? Harsh much?

I suspect that the development life cycle for phones has changed. No longer do you wait to release. You release as early as possible, and then fix later. Consider that iPhone came out with lots of missing functionality, most notably installed applications - something that is required to be called a smartphone. Also android on the G1 would best be described as a developer phone.

I wonder if Palm intentionally released WebOS early following the same pattern as iPhone & android. The clear advantage of doing this is to get revenue from early adopters to finance further development.

You also have to think about how reliant the manufacturer is on both the development and user community. Without the users, developers don't know what to develop, and without Palm the developers don't know how to develop. In this way, it takes a bit of time for a platform to mature. This is the first time since when I first bought the phone that I'm excited about it again.

beautifully put my friend!I remembered my iphone 3G a year ago and i was happy to start off with less than 32 apps available then.Who dare to complain about iphone, even now if you compared to the likes of the Androids and palms(less than 7 months Pre plus is coming) especially the capabalities and funtionality. The iphone is going on to the 4th years(they're no longer the new kid on the block so to speak). So far, what I have seen they done to the iphone was adding a big "S" to the end of "G" and called it improvement and funtionality.I guess the next big one coming is MMS and add an a "4" in front of the "G".Just playing with the numbers and letters game and selling lots of iphones
I guess there are a lot of happy iphone fanboys willingly to put up with it and change just for the letters and numbers to support apple financially for the same iphone.Who are we to criticise.RIGHT?
@ mu7efcer.

I'm guessing that EAS will still not work....

Palms moving at a pretty good pace. Few months and i'll be pretty much content.

My only complaint is NFS isn't in the app catalog and it has been several minutes after they announced its existence.

Bow chicka bow wow Palm is amazing :) i'm going to become a developer now! or at least try haha

you can start with a catch phrase like game, i'd spend a couple bucks on that.

Not to point to another site... but Engadget just posted hands-on video of the new Verizon Pre and Pixi plus (demoing Need for Speed and video recording of 1.4). Check it out but come back here! :)

Dang.. they upgraded the slider (more stable) and a 'clickier' keyboard. Without the center button, it does look shorter and stockier... I want one!

I can't watch the video from my current location. Does it look like the pre+ has a LED center button (like the pixi) or did it lose the center button altogether. If the latter, did the pixi+ lose the led center button, too?

The only phone with a center button is the original Pre. The Pixi, Pre+, and Pixi+ have LEDs in the gesture area for the purpose of visual feedback, but not an actual button. The button is superfluous, because you can accomplish the same function (switching to card view) by just swiping upward.

Its got the LED line like the pixi
