webOS 1.3.5 vindicates Need For Speed video? Serious OpenGL Graphics a Real Possibility

NFS App Catalog webOS 1.3.5 App Catalog

Remember that Need For Speed video from last month? There was a lot of consternation about whether or not it was legit, and the different App Catalog screenshots that PreCentral forum member Casperstar provided only threw fuel on the fire. It was different, from the layout to the background. But after the landing of webOS 1.3.5 we fired up the App Catalog and suddenly Casperstar was vindicated. The new App Catalog is an exact duplicate of the App Catalog that Casperstar showed us.

Combined with the base files for adding in GPU support that the WebOS Internals Twitter feed pointed us towards, we’re going to jump off the fence and say we’re almost entirely certain that the Need For Speed video is legit. So now we really want to see what Rubinstein is going to trot out on the stage at CES...

In other words: serious OpenGL graphics, games, and apps are a real possibility. In case you missed it the first time around, the contentious video is after the break

Thanks to krische for the heads up!

Anyone notice those "fake" screenshots were almost 100% accurate? Everyone cried that the screenshots were fake when it didn't "fade" correctly, except it doesn't "fade" correctly in the real app catalog either...

Furthermore, I believe the screenshots were posted before the devs even knew about the 1.3.5 beta.

i was once a non-believer.. now i believe.. i must say that i apologize to the guy who posted it.

apology seconded. this bodes well for the platform. much needed change

I just did a side-by-side shot of the "fading divider line" that was contested before, and it acts the same in 1.3.5 as it looks in casperstar's screenshots.

Derek! Why are you spoiling JRs secret stuff for Jan 7th? That too past midnight? Do they pay you to work this late? I bet they released 1.3.5 a little early to make sure there are no problems during the CEC demonstrations. Like this mockery of app fix in 1.3.5

interesting. when i bring up cellfare in the catalog, it shows the map screenshot.........I SAY FAKE!!! just kidding, but i wonder if the screenshots for the apps in the window like the one pictured above randomly switch, because i dont get that pic when i open it unless i view the app photos.

The thumbnails scroll through like a slideshow in the new App Catalog. If you wait a few seconds you will see the thumbnail change.

Noticed that. I had to do a second take, because I thought I was imagining things.

ahh, i didnt leave it open long enough to see that. thats a nice addition.

OMG thank u now we can give the lil kiddie what they want, now they can shout up and witness the truth Palm is and will be #1...Lets go 2010

The game may be real, but that video is, as I thought last time, fake. It's like how they use video footage at game demos to make sure they don't have problems.

I would like to have (a GSM PRE II) - but Dragon's Lair & Space Ace for the WebOS!!

Ok, that's their CES secret = they were gonna demo off NFS Demo on WebOS 1.3.5 (which has the prerequisite openGL libraries) hence the key for mentioning webos1.3.5 specifically by name!

Caperstar we believe you!

WOW!!! Awesome!

That HAS to be it. Now, what should I do with my Palm shares?

yeah too bad i cant even download apps at the moment idk whats going on with that :[

do you have preware or homebrew? If so you are in this boat:

http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre/221308-can-not-download-any-apps-a...

I had to do a partial reset to fix mine. But someone from WebOS internals said they are working on a fix.

I hope palm does gpu for the pixi... COME ON DON'T LEAVE US OUT!!!

Now I'm really interested in what CES has to offer!!!

SWEEEET!!! Can't wait for CES!

This is awesome! I don't really care about the game itself but I've been waiting and waiting for some sign that we'd get some decent 3D performance from this phone. More than likely only major devs have access to these kinds of tools at this stage but I hope once things get ironed out that we get ports of the better iPhone games out there and some original titles. It's really blowing my mind but maybe WebOS is the other platform that mobile Unreal 3 engine is being ported to...

I really hope NFS is legit and similar games even the unreal engine i hope thats legit too

I like the pre love evertyhing about it except the apps..i just hope it works out

seems like getting the screen to twist as his hand moves would be hard to fake, this would rock if it is real:

dang this looks great

I just noticed the same and it definitely creates high hope for me again.

It would huge is JR can demostrate a 3D game on Pre.

Great.... Still cant use Wifi on any wireless network the requires proxy support, but at least I can play NFS

good grief Rick, what does a rain cloud need with proxy support anyways?

this is very exciting, but my reaction is this: Palm... show me the money. Now you say it... No, with feeling, Jon... No you gotta feel it in your soul.

Ok palm, you're still my phone.

My point: I'm excited. At this point I'm not dumping you. But the pressure point (*) is coming up. And you better make good by then, or I'm gone.

(*) June 6, 2010: the time when I get another upgrade from sprint premier

I am so with you on a June breaking-point date. Actually, January could be a possible breaking-point month for me since Sprint is quietly giving their customers a "get out of jail free" card by changing their Terms of Service (meaning, you can technically break your contract because of that). I'm really curious to see what happens at CES, as that may determine whether or not I stick with WebOS. 1.3.5 is feeling snappier and less buggy than what I had been putting up with, but I still need to see that Palm is really on track if I'm gonna keep waiting for REAL improvement.

makes me real excited for CES I'm tired of my dad being able to play real dope ass racing games on his hero -_-

makes me real excited for CES I'm tired of my dad being able to play real dope ass racing games on his hero -_-

Now i can breathe easy knowing for SURE what phone I'll be getting just as soon as VZW gets 'em rollin' out here to us unsatiated Palm fans.

Doesn't really matter since I won't be able to even frickin buy it in the UK! Thanks for that Palm!

If what I read a week ago is right then there are some nice games coming on the pre. I am not a gamer so I do not care much for it but there was a web site that had some nice vidz and pics of 2 games headed out for the pre. I think this will be great for the pre. I did not believe it at first since I read about the performance change with the update. But after actually testing it out last night, I do believe it is coming.

My main attraction will be to flash. That will be a game changer. Especially since apple it coming out with their islate (which will be similar to the apple tv blunder. Steves been watching to much harry potter. If you watched the movie you already know what is coming out in 2010.) But if the pre comes out with great flash mechanism, the apple thunder will be no more. Portability, non subscription service, no boundaries will be key. Right now no phone can serve the net in all its glory within a tolerable speed. FLASH will change that. Do not have to wait for full HTML 5 to get off of the drawing board. This is here and now. The game can be changed. Flash will do it and apple will not have it. To bad for those iphone owners waiting for apps to make up for their butchered internet surfing. Funny how apple/apple developers can take what is free on the internet and placing it in a app for the iphone so that they can charge people. Call me crazy but that sounds like manipulative sales practices.

Since i do not believe in communism or dictatorships, the iphone will not be my cup of tee.

Palm pre for me and my free minded people. Android is ok but it reminds me too much of winmo. A very clunky os that has a huge potential to crash a lot.

Flash will open up a lot more possibilities. But it could also be a browsing nightmare if Palm implements it and doesn't give the user control over it (like to turn it OFF, or at least an option to have it at delay loading Flash objects).

I will cross my fingers. But I won't hold my breath. In 1.3.5 they just activated the *EXTREMELY ANNOYING* animated GIF's and gave the user NO WAY to turn it off :(

@crxssi

Sounds like a patch request to me. ;)

If you go to sites with massive amounts of animated GIF ads, I believe there is a patch to enable ad blocking...

TIWizard- Well, even a single, non-ad one can be so annoying that reading a page is irritating. Plus, when you hit one that has a fast refresh rate, it is bound to slow things down and eat up battery. :(

Cobrakon- yeah, I guess it is a patch request. But really, Palm should be thinking of these things BEFORE implementing them! Let's hope they do better with Flash, which will suck the life out of the phone in ways that animated GIF's can only dream of...

>In other words: serious OpenGL graphics, games, and apps are a real possibility.

Well, there are lots of possibilities. But I, too, will go out on a limb and say REALLY serious games won't happen unless Palm also announces some lower-level development tools, too. Porting things like Unreal probably can't happen in Javascript...

Anyway, promising news. I should hope they GPU-ize Luna first, though :)

It would be interesting if they coded NFS in Javascript-- it would show that serious games COULD be coded in JS.

If it isn't, then that means lower level development exists. It's a win-win scenario :D

Of course, this is assuming that NFS is real (which I believe it is)

i wanted to add the build name of OpenGLES is nova but is 0 byte in 1.3.5. i have a strong feeling at CES they're announcing OpenGLES along with some games to be released with the next volume of 1.3... It also makes me wonder Epic Games said they have the Unreal 3 engine working on 2 platforms but only showed 1 platform.........

Why can't this just be some guy who is playing a low grade video of NFS on his Palm Pre and pretending like he's controlling the car when he's actually not? he's not even pushing any buttons for acceleration or anything.

And his turns don't seem very real the way he is moving his Pre.

The screenshots (which are 100% consistent with the actual catalog) were posted before anyone outside of Palm had seen the new app catalog design. Why fake the video if the screenshots are (most likely) real?

Exactly. Sure the video could be easily faked with someone playing back a video but at this point it's not very likely. These screenshots of the App Catalog showing the exact game that was supposedly 'faked' are pretty much proof that we'll get OpenGL based games soon.

The hardware is all there so it's not doing anything the phone isn't capable of. I'm a believer.

that would be awesome if they did install this. It looks great in pictures!!!
