We've been hearing reports that since webOS 1.3.1, some Exchange users have been experiencing an issue that prevents the successful sync of calendar data between their phones and Exchange servers. The issue, which appears to be linked to an incorrect timezone setting, does have an unofficial workaround: Going to the Date & Time menu, setting Network time to "off", and manually selecting the correct time zone should restore proper sync functionality.
Palm has recognized that this is an issue for some, but it seems that they're having a difficult time reproducing this issue. A Palm Technical Support employee responded directly to users with this issue in their support forums:
We have been trying to reproduce this for awhile and can't get the same things you guys are seeing to appear on devices that we are using, so we would like to possibly look at some log files on the devices and see what is causing the error.
Specifically we would like to see a log from someone that turned off network time and the issue resolved, and someone that doing the same thing did not resolve this issue.
The good news is that given Palm's track record, I think that we can safely assume that if this issue does turn out to be a widespread one, they will likely release a fix in short order. We've seen rapid fire bug fixes in the past: if you recall, webOS 1.2.1 was released a short five days after 1.2.0, fixing the Exchange issues brought by that release.
So, help us gauge just how widespread this is: have you been affected by this bug?
Thanks to Trajadoja for the tip!

Thanks for the quick fix. I was getting quite frustrated with my pre's seeming inability to sync with my microsoft exchange calendar. I hope this will be fixed in the next patch. Now, if Palm would only add voice dial, the pre would be perfect!
Yes, I have been having this issue and unable to figure out what was wrong. While using the suggested fix in this posting, I discovered that my network setting had been changed from United States, Chicago Central time, to a Central time in Canada.
I have applied the fix and will be watching over the next few days to see if this works. Thanks for the post and keeping us informed.
Yes this bug has affected me and was a real pain the rear. I changed my time zone to Toronto and it still didn't sync properly, so I started trying every zone until I got to Montreal time zone then it finally synced.
Yes, I have had some calendar sync issues since the daylight savings time change. It kept taking me off Mountain Time and putting me on Arizona Time zone, which was an hour different (Same right now)
I mostly worked around it by turning off network time sync, but that turns back on automatically sometimes as well.
The most weird issue is with calendar reminders: I will get the reminder an hour before the actual appoint sometimes, and in the reminder it has the wrong time for the appointment (1 hour off) but the actual appoint shows up at the correct time.

Yup. I have the issue and was able to resolve it by manually setting my timezone. All appears correct now.
Ok, so whichever team of Palm employee(s) that made this update possible needs to be fired. This sync issue is only the latest hiccup that has come from this update, couple this problem with the random freezing, lag and shutdowns and it seems as if we've all downgraded instead of progressed. Today I go to type a text and no kidding the phone (Pre) took 5 minutes to load the recent conversations. This is crap, I work as an undercover Loss Prevention Agent and can't always risk talking on the phone to relay information, so I would hope that text messaging would work to communicate with my partner, but alas it didn't. Palm has really let me down with this Pre, I salivated and dreamt about this phone since its unveiling at CTIA and the end product has been a wobbly, clicking piece of cheap plastic with a laggy user interface, missing features and poor reception due to the radio. I was tempted to go with a Pixi, hoping that it would be built better and the UI bugs ironed out, but no, my girlfriends Pixi constantly stutters/freezes and even randomly opens the YouTube app and plays videos. Unless Palm pulls a complete surprise out of their hat this will be the last Palm device I ever buy. I think that there are many in the same boat as well. I will end by saying though that WebOS as a whole is fantastic and that many other OS's have much catching up to do, but Palm seems to have dropped the ball. Too bad those Nokia/Palm merger rumors are false.
I can imagine Palm can't recreate it because it might be a sprint network time server specific to the areas affected. I saw a similar problem a few years ago with Sprint and my blackberry 700i. When traveling to Houston, worked fine. When at home in East Tennessee, didn't work properly. I would suggest Palm work more closely with Sprint to resolve. I live 40 minutes east of the Eastern Time/Central time line and was affected by this same bug. Using the workaround, I selected "New York" for the time zone and my EAS calendar synch as well as my notifications started working properly.
Love the cloud, embrace the cloud, F___ the cloud!
I've entrusted the cloud calendar to give me a chime and visual cue on weekdays at noon-time, the close of the European market. Since time change, it gives the reminders at 11, even thuough the entry clearly states and shows 12. Palm's dependence and inability to master cutting edge techniques, after abandoning their time tested applications, is losing many fans. Similarly, I've not put out a single recommendation for friends or family to buy webOS in its current form. If people ask, my simple statement is "Its a nice toy". Orange needs a rethink, the world doesn't need a cheaper Iphone.
1.3.1 is not good. I also have the exchange not sync'd issue, time zone is not correct.
Also, off topic. The system sounds switch in the sounds & ringers panel doesn't work since 1.3.1.
I reset my time zone from Canada (never been, hear it's nice) to Chicago (I'm in CST) and it continually says "waiting for network time zone...". What does that mean?
UPDATE: just checked and it reverted back to "Regina, Canada, CST"...correct time zone, wrong country.
Tried the fix and it is still not working. Thoughts? How long does it take to kick in?
I have had the same problem... Here is what I did to resolve it:
1. Uninstall (remove) the exchange account from the phone (takes awhile).
2. Reboot (reset)
3. Recreate the exchange account (install the same acount anew).
4. Sync again (takes awhile)
By the way: I have an O2 GSM from Germany, using it in Norway, with a Telenor sim.
Regards,
Anders H.
I did this when my Exchange email stopped syncing and it worked as well. But, then I lost sync again and had to redo the process. Not cool.
I'll try just a reboot first. See if that works.
I had the same issue with calendar reminders going off an hour early. It hasn't happened in a few weeks, but I just remembered that I saw my time zone was auto set to the cayman islands. When I set it manually, the notifications started working properly.
wonder if this is related in any way to the 'time drift' issue some folks are having.
The unofficial FIX is based on my solution which I posted here about 1 month ago:
http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=activesync&message.id...
and here on precentral:
http://forums.precentral.net/webos-synergy-synchronization/212402-pre-so...
Yes, I have experienced this problem (calendar entries made on the phone don't sync to Exchange). I tried the fix and it worked. Unfortunately I travel between time zones often enough that I had to turn network time back on. I rarely create calendar entries on my phone anyway so for me, it's not that big a deal. If we ever get the ability to create meeting requests on the other hand . . . . .
It happened to me and setting the timezone manually didn't fix it. After setting the time zone I had to delete and recreate the account before reminders worked correctly.
I don't have this issue with calendar and Exchange, but with email. Are the two issues related? If so, I hope the fix is related.
Yes, changing the time zone to my city did not work, however, changing it to New York City did.
I haven't had an issue with Exchange calendar syncing, but I did notice the other day that my appointment notifications are an hour early even though the appointment is correct in the calendar. I checked my settings and it said Cayman Islands? I live two hours from DC. Changed it to New York and turned back on network time. Will have to wait and see what happens on Monday.
Notifications for events in my other calendars are spot on though.
I to have noticed quite a bit of lag, especially when launching apps from the launcher. Browsing seems a lot slower and it's not recognizing taps on web page links as well as before 1.3.1 either (even when I'm connected to WiFi - the Safari browser on my iPod Touch is way faster). However, I do think the calendar app is a bit faster now.
Yes, the whole not recognizing taps on links thing is making me really dislike the Pre. Before 1.3.1 I loved the browser. It was my favorite feature. Now I HATE the browser. Constantly hitting the same link over and over when I used to hit it once and go. So frustrating!
It is really kind of unfair when you think about it. The Pre I tested & bought didn't act that way.
Then, I went to a Sprint store to check out the pixi yesterday. I watched a customer explain to the CSR that he was going with the Hero b/c he couldn't get his taps to register on the Pre's browser....but did every time w/ the Hero. Made me sad.... I wanted to speak up and tell him that it wasnt always like that... But I couldn't explain that Palm makes things worse sometimes when they push an update.
I cant wait until Palm has WebOs all figured out and polished. Add in some better build quality and I will have my dream phone!
The Pre is unbearably sluggish with 1.3.1.... but the worst is that for the past 3 months, Exchange users can only send emails in a huge font size when replying to an email (it doesn't appear this way on the Pre, but it does to the Outlook recipient). Its like 14 or 18 pt Verdana... so your Pre emails look like you are yelling/kindergarten font. Its a known issue to Palm as I have spoken to their tech support line. For MONTHS I haven't been able to use my Pre to send email professionally. Months. This is supposed to be a work-ready phone! So the author of this article is dead wrong that Palm is quick to respond to bugs... unless of course he's talking about unbreaking the iTunes sync. Yahoo Calendar syncing was pumped by Palm as a feature at release... it was finally released 5 or 6 months later.
I totally agree with the comment that this Pre is a quirky toy or gadget... its gone from promising to a poor, buggy, but less expensive substitute for the iPhone. It is absolutely a dysfunctional sub for a Blackberry/business user which is what I switched from. My Yahoo account requests login about 10 times a day... another glitch courtesy of 1.3.1.
Palm appears overwhelmed and I really hope they get some more funding somehow and thus resources... else I can't see how this ship turns around.
This issue affected me and the workaround solved the problem. It was a one way sync isue for me. Pre to Exchange would not sync, but Exchange to Pre would.
I'm a user of Pocket Mirror app to sync my phone with my Outlook (not through EAS). I am having the same problem with ALL DAY EVENTS. ALL DAY EVENTS are over 2 days instead of 1. Chapura, developers of Pocket Mirror, state its a Palm issue that has to do with Time Zones/ DST.
Yep I HAD this issue, but thanks to the forums on Precentral.net got it resolved. You guys rock!!!!
I havn't noticed a problem with calendar syncing but I do seem to have a problem with EAS that is happening more often with the 1.3.1 release. I constantly have emails that only show the sender and subject line. It times out before loading the body(text) of the email and then does not try again leaving only the from and subject....very frustrating. I have seen some other users talk a little about this but havent found it in alot of posts...anyone having the same problem or know a fix?
I have had problems with 1.3.1 with login credentials rejected for my exchange account. Time Zone fix doesn't work.
I also noticed that the account type I set up my exchanged account is missing. Originally "EAS" and something else were available for exchange, (forgot what the name was exactly) in 1.2.1, but that "something else" has now disappeared as an available account type.
I thought i was crazy. I have been experiencing the problem as well.
Now what about those of us who get a timed out message when trying to load the body of email text using exchange and google. My office blocks out pop and imap so exchange is the only option to get email on the native email app on the palm pre. Syncing email is not the problem but when I try to open an email I get a timed out message. So, I get the headers but not the body. Others have also noted this but I have not found a solution that works for me.
DH JUST got his pre a week ago and had not been able to sync with his exchange server regularly. He was getting ready to return the pre for another phone (not a pre!). Thanks for the tip - we are now testing the 'fix'
UPDATE - we have tried every EST time zone option and with network time and and off - no sync still... :-(
Update to me update: ok, we changed it one more time... and now it WORKS! we changed the time zone to NY, and turned ON 'Network time' - turned OFF 'network time zone'.
He deleted something off of the palm, and by the time he logged into the exchange server it was gone from there - woo-hoo!!
I usually don't post comments like this, but it's really sad that, one, it too so long to fix this (about a month) and, two, no one even noticed the problem in the first place. Funny thing is, the fix is unofficial. How can Palm call the Pre a serious business device if it can't even fix a broken Exchange matter in a timely fashion? Shame on you, Palm!
For me (and I saw the similar issue reported here as well), syncing seems to work OK: Reminders are on time and events created in the mobile apears in my Outlook calendar. However, since 1.3.1 I can't see the events from my Exchange (the notification does work..
Furthermore, if the exchange is "on" at the "Calender view options", events from the other calendars (Google, palm profile)become hidden.
Another thing happen if the Exchanfe is "on" at the "Calender view options": tap the time slot won't create a new event (only from the drop down meny it is possible).
Set "No" for this exchange and everything comes back...
Last- I have another Exchange which seems to work OK. The difference between them (at least on I know) is 2the Exchange version: 2003 vs. 2007 (which is the working one).
Hope this info will help Palm to provide a solution,
Since 1.3.1 my Pre has started adding around 2 minutes a day to its time. At least I was early for appointments instead of being late.
When I checked the settings I found that the Pre had jumped from New York to the Cayman Islands. (I'd love to be in the Caymans for the holidays but it ticks me off when the Pre goes on vacation without me.)
I changed my Network settings to off a little over a week ago and, so far, the Pre has been staying in the New York metro area with me.
Wow, how could the network be so wrong so often for so many people? I just looked at my phone, and my phone thinks it's in another country! I live outside Chicago but my phone's time zone is "Regina, Canada (CST)"
1.2.1 was a step up in reliability for me, but 1.3.1 seems to be a big step down. For the first couple of days, I thought everything was OK. I applied a lot of patches, but have since removed them all (EPR) with perhaps a small improvement in stability, but perhaps not. Hopefully the next update will fix a lot of bugs without introducing new ones!
I have this problem as well. I believe it seems to mostly affect reminders. The appointment is at the right time, but the reminder comes up an hour off.
My time zone should be Denver. My Pre automatically sets it to Arizona. When I recently visited Michigan, my Pre set the time zone to the Cayman Islands and was an hour off on the reminders.
All seems fixed if I manually set the correct time zone.
I had this problem, and I'm in Illinois already so all I did was set the Network time to "off", and manually selected the Chicago time zone.
I do still have a problem with my USB functions not working AT ALL since upgrading to 1.3.1. I don't get ANY menu on the PRE like I used to prompting for USB, Charge or Media when I plug it into any of my computers at work. The computer recognizes it is there as an unknown device, and the pre's charge icon comes on, however it doesn't take a charge, and I can't access it on the PC.
Boy, Palm just really doesn't understand software testing at all. This is so disappointing.
And for those who think this is Sprint's fault, somehow, I don't see the Treocentral or AndroidCentral forums full of complaints about this issue.
I was having the same problem for several weeks. It was a Palm to exchange sync issue. If I entered into the Exchange account it appeared in my palm with no problems. Used the suggested fix and everything is fine, but I had to re-enter my palm created entries. It would not sync old entries that failed to sync unless I edited them or re-entered. I hope Palm and/or Sprint figure this out. I prefer my timezones, etc. to be automatic.
The "Network time zone" has also moved me to Canada against my will.
yes, this problem has affected me. pretty sweet how i told my dentists receptionist that i didnt need an appointment card, cause i would just put it in my phone. oops. appointment was lost in my phone.
yes, i am in chicago, and my phone thinks i am in canada
yes, 1.3.1 is a slow, laggy, buggy pile of steaming dung
yes, i paid the early adopter fee for this phone
and yes, android is looking more and more appealing by the second.
I am having the same problem and the above mentioned is not fixing it.
BTW chadaboy, andriod has much worse sync issues. I have a friend that has v2.0 driod and has yet to get it to reliably sync with exchange. Try the driod message boards. they are full of people with this problem.
I am having a little different issue. My sync from the Exchange server is working fine. But when a make a new appointment on the Pre+, it will not show up in Outlook. I can modify an appointment on the Pre and have it update Outlook... it just will not push a new appointment from the device to Outlook???
