Well that was quick, the same day we note that Palm is going to start giving future versions of webOS to developers (yay!) and wonder just what that version will be, little birds start telling us that Palm is already distributing webOS 1.3.1 to select developers.
Featureset doesn't look to be revolutionary, but hey, updates are updates. We'll let you know more when we can confirm more.

that was quick! anything worth to be 1.3.1
Nicceee, I can't wait to see what is new in the build. I kinda hope it gets ... accidentally leaked ...
Yeah, I can't be the only person who thought of Bittorrent with the word "seeded".
I'm sure 95% of non-devs are wondering the some thing! I wonder if the facebook app is in that build, that's what I really want!!
I kinda hope it doesn't, as that could be the end of Palm trusting developers with pre-release software. (Or they could make developers jump through burdensome hoops get to access.) I hope all developers that have early access play by the rules.
Yes, I want to know what's in there as much as the next guy, but even more strongly I want there to be a strong community that Palm can trust.
Good point!
the SDK got leaked, and Palm didn't seem to mind. Well, maybe they did mind, and showed their disapproval by deciding to also release early updates to developers. It should be obvious by now that Palm is not Apple - they actually support their third party hacking/tweaking/developing community. Just bc they don't officially release the updates to more than a few people, it doesn't mean that they couldn't glean useful information from a forum *ahem* or other such site where the types of people who would care enough to dl a prerelease update for their phone would go to report bugs/etc with their new update.
You say the feature list isn't that great. . . prove it! Is there a list somewhere on the forum?
please provide list of new features/bug fixes
I wonder who the "select developers" are...
I suspect it is those who responded to Chuq's call for beta testers in the PDN blog.

My phone just downloaded a 160MB WebOS update which it threatens to install on next charge.
?.
I've tarred up the *.ipks.
I meant to say to this one, are you sure it's not your update app having issues like people are having?
Nope; not sure. Off to search/read...
...bah. Apparently that's it. Funny timing.
The much larger size (vs. the 'real' 1.2.1 update) threw me off, but apparently it's just pulled a bunch (i.e. hundreds) of packages that didn't change between 1.2.0 & 1.2.1. But this isn't that thread.
Thanks for the clue. (also available by running the update ap if I'd bothered...)
All I need is that the App limit fixed. I want to install more apps. I don't care about any new features.
There's a patch for that... :}
That is only a temp solution...
Read the patch info. It explains the issue properly...
Preware works perfectly in 1.3.1 on both the Pre and Pixi emulators.
The stand-alone Preware installers at http://get.preware.org/ work fine for installing Preware on webOS 1.3.1 ...
http://gitorious.org/webos-internals/bootstrap/blobs/raw/master/optware-... works perfectly for optware bootstrap and SSH server installation (this can also be done directly in Preware if you know how to set up ssh key authentication).

Thanks for the update Rod. Glad Palm was smart enough to get it into your capable hands!
That's weird. Why 1.3.1 and not 1.3.0?
Why not? It's just a set of monotonically increasing numbers ...
1.3.0 was tested. Small updates were needed. 1.3.1 becomes the final release. It is pretty common.
Because version numbers have no real meaning in life. Anybody remember when Winamp jumped from 3.x to 5.0 ?? Because it was TWICE as bad ass or some shiz. Palm should steal that concept from Winamp. Palm & Sprint are both in need of a good marketing revamp (ESPECIALLY Sprint, tho!). Can't wait.
Because Apple broke MediaSync again, rofl
lol.
I would bet anything that that is the reason.
So how soon is someone going to 'leak' the released rom for 1.3.1 ... i for one would love to get my hands on it!
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Palm isn't distributing the update for the phone, rather, is updating the emulator images. Emulator images won't run on the phones no matter how hard you try to make it work.
The update as a whole...no, but you can definitely pull individual apps from it (like the Facebook app)!
Correct. They will be distributing a webOS doctor when release is near.
Palm, PLEASE. All I ask for is an app install fix and a camcorder. Thank you.
I suspect you'll get exactly 50% of what you asked for. 8^) Which is actually a pretty good percentage.
Great move by Palm. This lets devs help find bugs in the new version (I've already found my first) and lets them get their apps up to speed BEFORE it is released to the public. The emulator now comes in 2 versions to support Pre / Pixi which is great. Documentation is still too slim - don't really know what all the new features will be. Patience...
I wonder what 1.3 update will add to the Pre??? hmmmm???
1.3.0 was the real update they were working on.
1.3.1 fixed the iTunes block.
13mb? Nothing to get excited about here.
That's a mockup, since the actual on-device 1.3.1 update hasn't been released to the select developers.
is there a way to disable updates?
I value the tweaks much more then the updates. At least the last update. I didn't use most of what they updated but lost all the cool tweaks i did use. I'd prefer to wait to update until all my tweaks are confirmed to work on any new version.
Disabling updates would wreak havoc on application developers as more and more people forget--or just don't bother--to upgrade.
As a developer myself, I can't even fathom the support headaches such a scenario would bring as I add new features to take advantage of new APIs and such.
well they haven't added too much that i use. I'd much rather have my 4x4 icons, message forwarding, status tweaks, camera shudder off, disable notifications while on a call, etc. Not sure how me not updating my phone hurts a developer. It's my choice to not upgrade. If i lose the functionality of the latest software or api's whatever those are then fine. You can build for the latest version. If people forget that's their own fault. i'm talking about chosing for myself when to update. regardless i'm going to try to not update until i have i'm forced too until the useful tweaks are confirmed to work.
im keeping my fingers crossed this will be available in the uk, its no fun only having 1.1.3
I just got my pre like the day before the last big update (1.2 I believe?) , so hadn't had any tweaks, patches, etc installed at that time.
I'm an avid lurker here and so looking at a couple of older articles around the time the 1.2 big update came out; I want to make sure to do things right and not brick or otherwise ruin the pre when this 1.3.X -
am I right in that all I really should do is disable the TWEAKS by using the WebOS quick install java program under tools-->tweaks and just uncheck everything I've done? but all the homebrew apps I've installed are going to be ok? (I've not done any 'rooting' as far as I know - just installed .ipks via webos quick install)
after the update just re-check the tweak boxes, and at worst some wont work but nothing else, or should I be waiting to read posts here about what tweaks still work, etc?
thanks , I really like this web page and all the news because I def like the Pre a lot!
Please Palm give me Video for this phone. I am going to say it again, please give me video capability for this phone. I know you can do it.
Not with 1.3.1...
improving speed will go a lot further in increasing everyone's user experience than enabling taking videos, which nobody will use all the time, and only some people will use once in a blue moon
SPEED SPEED SPEED! Palm needs to address the SPEED ISSUE right away! Period! I have a iphone 3gs and a pre. Love the pre but it cant be used as my main driver due to its LAG times to get things done. It just takes toooooo long to to basics.
Palm stock will tumble further if they dont address this NOW!
The Pre doesn't make use of the GPU thats actually in the phone...at all. That new hire should be able to fix that, and that should bring the biggest improvement in speed. I believe its the same GPU as in the iPhone... correct me if I'm wrong. So things should be great after that... no ETA on it tho.
Calendar and contacts hopefully are the main target and of course battery problems and how about some password - Firefox comes to mind - management in the browser?
Camera can wait for December, before Christmas would be cool to have a video ability and some other basic camera features ;-)...
I have a good feeling about this product evolving.
I keep in mind that this company started over from scratch with this concept. Remember a new system, instantly working great with the first phone, hardware and software and no billions for developing. Just smart minds and a great community already waiting to work on this...
This does make a difference to me.
And I experienced some great very sleak service just two days ago from Palm and providers.
They are working this device for real.
I can wait until the release. Let the devs do their private job. No leaks until the official update please.
does anybody know if the pre is getting the video ability and when does the next update come out.
Please never use Comic Sans again.
seconded
hhm there seems much is still needed to be patched after 1.3.1
at least this works then by day one of the offical release:
---SPOILER---
http://ipkg.preware.org/feeds/webos-patches/1.3.1/
Proxy support, anyone? Anyone?
will the update install be affected by the tweaks I have added or will I need to run webos doc first?
Should only have to run EPR, not Doctor...
Speed improvement is welcome. However I still have 4 major issues....
1) International OS revisions released on the same day
2) App limit bug (patch doesnt fix the problem for good)
3) BT file transfer
4) Video Recording
Can't Palm create/release a feature road map? Like ALL software companies do?
Palm, Please fix the calendar app to allow inviting participants to meetings... this is a major oversight for a device that is supposed to be a business/productivity tool. You're Palm, not Mattel.
Facebook and iTunes are fun, meeting invites are a necessity. Fix the problems then add toys.
I like toys...
Video capturing- yes go for it, we need a reason for having the video app
Speed- this could easily be done by removing crap that nobody uses! (besides sprint TV, NFL and NASCAR...pointless)but along with the speed issue, not just the browser but load times on apps as well.
1.3.1 should just include all the patches so they update automatically so you dont have 3 different versions of one patch (4x4 launcher)and have to uninstall to reinstall the new version. and the patches you dont want, just make it available to turn them off in a preference menu (incase you dont want the landscape messaging etc)
I mean this isn't hard to do for a dev, since all the patches are already on preware, just make them available to the public, the people outside our little precentral users because i bet there are people who dont know about this site looking at their pre going "wtf this doesnt do shit!" because they dont know about preware, quickinstall and homebrew apps.
Is it just me or are the instructions for installing using patches and "preware, quickinstall and homebrew apps."?
When all is said and done, how much will have changed on my phone and computer?
Any late news on when 1.3.1 might be available for the Pre?
