Pixi to get 1.3.1 Right Away, Pre "Shortly Thereafter"

webOS Update

The teasing and leaking can officially end, with Palm webOS 1.3.1 scheduled to land for the Palm Pixi on Sunday, November 15 (i.e. Pixi release day) and on the Pre "shortly thereafter." In actuality, we have heard a few reports of Pixi phones out in the wild already and they're showing the update available now.

Most Pixi phones will ship with webOS 1.2.9 out-of-the-box and will pull down the 1.3.1 update soon after activation. Between downloading the update and all the Synergy account information over exclusively EVDO, well, it’ll be slow going for the first hour or so. For a full list of the updates in webOS 1.3.1, click here.

webOS 1.3.1 will also be required for the new Facebook app to work, apparently there are some underpinnings not in older version of webOS that are needed. And on that note, the Facebook app will not ship in 1.3.1, instead it will appear in the App Catalog for users to download if they so desire (and have space). As always, you should remove any and all patches and themes before updating webOS.

Now, about that “shortly thereafter” for Pre users. We know you don’t like it. Neither do we. Palm has assured us that they are doing everything that they can to get webOS 1.3.1 out to Pre owners as soon as possible, but there are still some things that must receive a final stamp of approval from the powers that be before all is deemed a-okay There's no getting around carrier approval, and that approval comes on a per-device basis.

Oh, and we should note that the above only applies to Sprint phones. We don't know when Pre owners on Bell, O2, or Movistar will be able to update to 1.3.1, but we hope it won't be much longer after the folks on Sprint get it.

This is slap to Pre owners. There is no reason what so ever that Pre owners should not be able to have the 1.3.1 update first even if it meant the Pixi launched a week later. I'm very disappointed with palm on this one.

You say that like Palm is deliberately holding back. Trust us, they're not. There are ducks that have to be put into a very specific row and until they're there, it won't happen. Things are moving to make it happen, but it's not Palm giving the finger to Pre owners. There are more players here than just Palm. ;-)

Be disappointed with Sprint, not Palm. Sprint has to approve the update for the Pre before Palm rolls it out.

Why exactly does Sprint need to approve anything software-wise from Palm after the device hits stores?

Regardless of the answer, and perhaps even well-founded, I still resent the fact it may act as a pair of shackles on Palm.

bummer on the shortly thereafter. You would expect it to come to pre users first or concurrently at least.

Boo. :/

I hope it is released for the Pre a day after the Pixie and a week.

Well, this is better than "...in early 2010." But all-in-all I'd say it is a good thing, I would rather get a 1.3.1 "shortly thereafter" that doesn't screw up my Pre, and a 1.3.1 "immediately" that hoses stuff up.

no o2 firmware :-( It is needed badly on the euro pre

Can't you use Meta-Doctor to change the carrier?? All you'd need is a GSM Pre, right?

Deep down I'm kind of relieved that it's not happening this weekend. I'm out of town and I'm always a little nervous that an update will hose my phone and it'd suck to happen while I'm on the road.

Well, it's not like folks would have to download and install the update right away, but for those of us who wouldn't mind getting 'hosed' potentially in order to get the update, it would be nice.

I spoke to Sprint Advanced Tech support a few days ago about a Pre issue & I was told that there are webOS updates scheduled around Nov 20 & Dec 17. He openly gave this info as he was reading from his computer. Note: the issue I called about was slow downloading of apps. That's when he said a fix was scheduled for Dec 17.

thats what i hate about palm they usually only focus on their newest devices and forgot about the older devices
thats just exactly what they been doing with all their phones

example : bouhgt a palm 755 then when the palm centro came out cheaper and with way more apps and treo 755 never got an upgrade it was more expensive and so on

if they keep on doing that am go return the pre and never get another palm product ever

I'm with you. I don't think Palm's gonna abandon their previous phones, tho. With WebOS, rolling updates have become part of the platform. There's no reason whatsoever to assume that the Pre will stop getting updates.

do i have to uninstall any themes so i can update any of my apps
