webOS 1.2 Features Lovingly Detailed on Video

[youtube link]

Take a moment to thank jhoff80 from our forums, who has put together a whole series of videos detailing the news features that have been uncovered in webOS 1.2.  Above, a general overview. After the break - browser downloading (hooray) and a video showing that Calendar speed in 1.2 is basically the same (aka slow).

Again, we still aren't recommending users attempt to install 1.2 before it's released - your Pre will ask you to "update" to 1.1 (if you don't turn that off in Linux) and that will cause problems.

Update: Elysian893 has put together an excellent list of all the known new features in 1.2.

Thanks, jhoff80!

thats cool you can download PDF files and ZIP files

I was excited to hear about option to download files, but
it's not really that at all.
Rendering new file types, but not being able to save
unsupported file types is not "downloading".
A real download option would allow you to save any
file, supported by the browser or not, to /media/internal.

Yep, I agree. I need to be able to download and save everything. And they're still not allowing us to download mp3s.

Thankfully, I know that these things can all be hacked to work right. I am just confused why palm has it so hobbled to begin with. I love synergy and all it does to make my life easier, but I really do look forward to not having to carry around my Q anymore.

You've got it wrong. It DOES allow you to save any file types, supported by the phone or not. For anything unsupported by the phone, which I showed with ZIP files, it can't open them, so it gives a no handler installed message, but it is still saved to /media/internal/downloads.

The only two I've found it won't save are MP3 and MP4, which it automatically streams and doesn't give the option to save currently.

Hey, that's way cool if it does that. I had read elswhere that it still didn't, but you know how rumors are...lol.

What about attaching those downloads to email, anything on that?

can I download podcasts through the browser? This woud sure make life easier since we don't have mobile itunes on our Pre's

You Should check out Dr Podder in the Home Brew, it is a great Podcast App.

Sorry about the double post... Man I want 1.2 so bad!! I'm excited even more because I know its coming out with new paid apps which is very exciting... I will def be supporting the developers.

Then you should get DrPodder and donate to drnull right now. It's an awesome app and he's put a ton of work in there to make it work wirh all kinds of podcasts. It will be a long time before any other app reaches this level.

I agree. Sound Control, NOW! No excuses. Make my life easier, not worse. Don't give me sinergy that only works half ass, and take away all the regular features that the basic TREO had. That's horseshit.

I'm praying that that particular build of 1.2 he was showing off wasn't the final build because if it is, I'm going to be seriously pissed off.

Palm hasn't addressed the fact that we still cannot customize our notification sounds... I'm aware that there is a homebrew app that allows for such a feature, but I don't feel that I should have an app running in the background of the phone for such a basic feature.

It's been 4 months now. No excuses.

Oh gawd, not this again>>!!!!. Just be happy that they are giving you something new.. They can't please everybody all the time.

Shut it, Cinderella!

This ain't Charity, where you should be happy at whatever scraps they throw your way. it's business. I paid for this phone, I expect results. I didn't go with the iPhone, or Microsoft. I chose PALM because it stood for something diferent than the rest. AS it turns out, I was had, Palm is NOT the old Palm we were used to. The PRE is like a bad dream in Microsoft world.

lol entitlement complex

what you want is automatically more important than what everyone else wants.

I'm sure they figure (correctly) that everyone interested in customized notification sounds does have the homebrew version, and thus can hold off on that for another patch as it's not absolutely critical because it has indeed been done unofficially, but not everyone wants to root their phone for a half-cooked browser download solution.

I disagree. It has been said time and time again that this phone is not designed for business professionals but rather for mass-market appeal. The masses do not hack their phones or even know that it is possible.

They want a smartphone even though they don't know about the advanced features, but they would expect them to have at least the same features as their old dumbphone.

That these features are missing are inexplicable and baffling if Palm wants this phone to be adopted by a generation of users who expect a snazzy UI and phone experience.

Well said.

I will add that the homebrew ringtone control solution mentioned (which I have installed) is still very limited; It is only about two steps better than the regular Pre.

But again, you are right, most Pre users don't want to be messing around with hacks, and they shouldn't have to either. That wasn't the deal. I don't remember Sprint or Palm saying to us we will charge $200 with a 2 year contract for a Palm device that it "looks" like it behaves like a Treo you'all so familiar with, but it also has sinergy among all these programs, but really it only works half ass, and you will have to wait several iterations before we can make it a real Treo with sinergy, which is what we expected, and they didn't tell us that we were wrong for that expectation. So, this is clearly a shitty deal.

And I am NOT talking just about the damn ringtones. It's about ALL the common sense Treo features that are non existent, or half ass existent on the PRE.

Waaaaaaaaaaaa!

Go buy a Blackberry or an iPhone, and do some reading to understand the world doesn't revolve around you.

AS I have asked many times before, is there going to be a virtual keyboard in 1.2????

NO one is obligated to answer your questions.
try calling Palm since they would know!!!

No official virtual keyboard in 1.2, no. But as soon as 1.2 is officially released, I'd bet the homebrew one will be updated to work on it.

Hold the orange button and THEN click a link & see what happens

I love the fact that I will be able to play audio files in emails. I get my work and home VM by emails and up until now the Pre was useless in that aspect.

I remember palms ceo when he said "they being 2 years in this game and yeah finally copy and paste" I think palm is integrading this changes litle by little..I am happy to see the progresss..I can't wait till the day palm OS is the #1 and best OS in the market.

I'm sick and tired of waiting on plam to get things right! How long has it been since the last update? How long have they been reading this site!? How long does it take to make updates? It really can't be that long if people in homebrews can take about a week to make an app! This is just retarded! We have to copy paste the whole paragraph?! Come on this is BS to the 10th degree! I swear I'm going to blackberry once they fix the problem with the scroll wheel! Palm stay doing BS like this all the time! They always half ass everything.. Always want us to just be faithfull followers of their BS!

Um, it's been not even 6 weeks since the last update. You don't see Apple or RIM or Google pumping out updates with this many features this often, do you? The reason is, it takes time. It's not even slightly comparable to homebrew app updates because an operating system is so multi-faceted. They don't have one thing to concentrate on at a time, they've got everything. A huge update like thus after around 6 weeks is really an incredibly fast pace.

Yeah because Apple and Rim dont lack the bare necessities like palm does. They have no need for updates, where as palm does.

Before you get a blood clot, go take a look at WinMo's scheduled OS updates. Palm is well ahead of all other phone manufacturers in this regard.

Grrrr take your ass back to the boy genius report and complain their, you prolly don't even use a pre as your daily driver. Stfu

Yo web os 4 life its "there" not "their" and go suck on your old mamas diaper rash and understand that palm just give things little at a time... We shouldn't have to wait for anything if these people have a fleet of people sitting behind a desk just trying to figure out what is it that they want to do for the customer.. I've been with this phone since it came out and simple little things shouldve been part of the phone like spell check... For gods sake a little flip phone has that and text forwarding... I'm not sittin here trying to argue nor fus wit anyone but I figure that this was a place where people of the webos world can vent their frustrations... Obviously it isn't!

You can tell that Palm is in a real position that they want to please their followers by the frequency of the updates. That's why I'm going to stick with them. I'm sure that Palm would want to take some time and fully test their upgrades to ensure they are fully functional in all facets and with all partners. I predict that WebOS 2.0 will surpass the Iphone 3.0 release once we get there. I think we should enjoy they great phone we have. Could definately be worse... We could have an Iphone *Shiver*.

I'm sick of all these big complainers...I'm sure that if Palm came out with updates every week, they would complain that the updates are too frequent. They are never happy. Pallm...do what you got to do. All I want is quality, even if I have to wait a little longer. Unlike some here, I'm a patient guy.

Bb, it is exactly because of people like you, with your mediocracy standard, that we have companies giving us crap, half-ass, instead of quality, from the start. Your life is half-ass, and mediocre, I am sure, and you will continue to take it, in the butt, and be content with it. Great. Good for you. Those of us that expect the best, will continue to get the best, as long as we continue to complain, when we hold these companies to a higher standard (and you will benefit from it as well, indirectly). If it wasn't because of "complainers" like us you would still be using the telegraph (oh, and I am sure you would be a happy ballerina about it, supporting their retarded system, jumping for joy like a silly cheerleader. Great). Palm used to have that higher standard with their Treos. Not so with the PRE. Something went wrong with their core philosophy. Those of us that grew with Palm are complaining about it because we expect better. Palm was created because there was a need/room for a higher standard, based on the disastisfaction of complainers. If no one complains, no one would come up with a better widget. So, do us a favor, and stop being a pushover, you're not helping any one by supporting or cheering substandard products or lowering the bar or expectations.

You obviously have not worked for an IT firm, which shows the irony of your post. You want a firm to provide a high quality, full feature product from version 1.0. If that were the case we would never have the Web OS. When I say 1.0 OS, I am making a point. A point you have missed when others say it: The Treo is a great phone and that's because what we have today has been under development since 1992 when Palm first started with Palm OS.

Companies that "half-ass" it, as you speak, provide products that are full of defects that require weekly updates.... not to provide more features, but to fix those defects. They are constantly chasing their tales.

Web OS has been under development for two years for a company that has been struggling. If they had unlimited resources, I'm sure we'd have Web OS 5.4 now... but then no one could afford the phone.

So if in the past two years, if they haven't listened to us, who have they listed to? The market leader and I think we could all agree that the product they provided on June 6 matches that competition. Now they just need to get more Apps in that catalog of theirs.

"If they had unlimited resources, I'm sure we'd have Web OS 5.4 now... but then no one could afford the phone."

wrong. If they had unlimited resources, they probably could give the phone for free away, so everyone would have one by now. :)

and... btw... PALM IS EVIL!

calesuar1, at least you accept that you are a complainer. First of all, you should have waited for a refined product, maybe for a 7th generation Pre. I Loved my Treo 755. I didn't have any issues with it, but it was a refined product. Second, Palm will get better not because of big complainers like you, but because they are competing against big players like Apple and Blackberry and they want to stay in the game. What they expect from us is not complaints, but feedback. Look at how requests for improvements are made here: http://www.precentral.net/dear-palm-what-we-need-next-updates

That is the right way to do it. I do have things I wish they had in my Pre (video recorder, LED external notifications, better cut and paste, etc. etc. etc.). However, when I bought this phone, I knew exactly what I was getting my self into by buying a first generation phone. Finally, with this first generation phone, Palm did a great job. Of course, there is much room for improvement, and with every update that comes out, my expectations grow higher and higher.

byhumba, I hear you, but I still don't agree with you. I bought the first Palm Pilot, a great piece of engineering, it was the best in its field at that time. I bought the Palm III, same thing. For each device there were improvements and next generations, yes, but each device was great, unique, with no issues, especially when compared with its competition. In fact, i am having a hard time thinking if they had ANY competition at the time, their products were so great. Then I bought the Treo 600, another awesome piece, followed by the 650. This last one was so great I kept it for years because it was such a good piece that by simply adding new apps I could do just about everything. You see the difference? They were king pieces every time from the start. Stuff you didn't have before, and with all the stuff you expected from previous products. And newer app or features for them came later as new ideas appear etc. The PRE is not at all like its predecesors. The story here is different. It has nothing to do with IT development, it has everything to do with philosophy, with their plan of attack. Don't tell me that in order to come up with this new synergy idea and webOS, which I applaud, they HAD to get rid of basic, expected functionalities, so basic that cheap little flip phones have it. It is ABSURD to come up with the next best thing in one hand, but forget about your basic features on the other, especially in light of its iphone, and Blackberry competition. I do understand about product development, I am an electrical engineer, did it for many years developing from pagers to modems, and I also understand about marketing, competition and sales. The PRE failed in all aspects, unlike its previous products. That's all. It's like coming up with a new car that runs on water, exahust is vapor, but it has no disk brakes, no air bags, no A/C, no radio, no power doors and windows, no trunk space, fits only one person, and only 5 feet or below, can't make a u turn in normal streets, it rolls easy, the paint chips off easy, and it stalls frequently. And Honda made it. So, you know, people have certain expectations about Honda. AND, Toyota has already a great car that runs on Water too, albeit, mixed with a special mixture, but runs great, it has all kinds of bells and whistles, better than most cars before it. You know what? I would have been pissed at Honda for bring out to market such car, even if their core technology was better, but forget about all the expected basic commodities all cars had at that point, in the face of a better product? DUMB! Simply, Dumb.

Man, you guys are way too serious about a phone, imo. Don't get so emotional. Calm down. Get out of your own brain for a minute. Everybody has their own issues with the phone, and everybody is going to see Palm's response in a different light. If people need to vent, let 'em. Don't take it personal.

On the one hand, yeah, the pre is an intriguing piece of technology, and the vision behind it is inspiring. Now the question is, can they deliver a device that suits a broad range of needs and desires. And if they don't, are any of us going to pretend that we wouldn't look elswhere if Palm is out of business in a year? Of course we would.

We've all got legitimate beefs, and legitimate kudos. Don't be sorry worried about what the next guy says.

this is all bull.

I just hope they got a video recording in that WebOS 1.2 version. I have waited for that crap for awhile now. I still don't get how a f*****g phone in today's day and age cannot record videos when every other phone in the market does.

what if i see a cop beating somebody to death, how do i collect my evidence? take a bunch of photos?

I'm running out of patients waiting for that video recording. I have owned a palm phone since 2003 or so and i'll still like to keep it that way.

Yeah and hope that we'll be able to forward the ish too! God knows how long we'll have to wait on that update too! These waiting games are sicking! As I keep stating time and time again, they suck for not having this product a refined product!

The updates that I've read about (and seen in this video) so far sound good. I especially like the fact that you can now turn off the alarms with the mute switch. It always seemed strange to me (and caused me a little bit of embarrassment, actually) when I would turn the mute switch on, thinking that would, you know, mute my phone, only to find out that the alarms rang during a meeting or something.

There are only really two things that I'm concerned about:

1) Copy and paste. It's great that the update has it, but the Pre was advertised as having it from the beginning, from what I remember. Then they come out with a half-baked version of copy/paste (up until now, of course). I think they were just trying to one-up the iPhone at the time, but if they didn't have the stones for it, they shouldn't have said anything at all.

2) Video recording. I do realize that there was no official word that 1.2 has this feature, but finding out that it doesn't have it (judging from the video above, which I'm sure would have mentioned video recording, if it was included in the update) is disappointing. Maybe they'll surprise us and put it in the released update, but frankly, for such a big feature, I would have thought there would be at least glimmers of it in a pre-release update.

Any news if the new OS 1.2 will have a virtual keyboard?
