Patrick emails us to point out that many people in our forums are experiencing problems with Exchange Activesync after the webOS 1.2 update. There plenty of talk about it in the general webOS 1.2 issues thread as well as here: "webOS 1.2 - does EAS work?"
Reports are still a bit sporadic and it's not entirely clear yet where the issue lies, but people with hosted exchange accounts like 1and1, 4smartphone, or mail2web seem to be getting hit the hardest.
ditpixs says that Palm is aware of the issue and they're working on it - a posting in Palm's own support forums confirms it.
Meanwhile, there doesn't seem to be a quick fix (deleting and re-entering your account information doesn't help). If we're really looking at a problem here, guess that means Palm will need to roll one more patch into webOS 1.2.1.
How about you: did the 1.2 update break EAS on your Pre?

Comments
smooth sailing here
No issues. EAS with work is fine.
good here too - seems a little faster as well. I did enter it as a new account since under the last firmware it wasn't too great.
fine here
Yes, it definitely broke mine. Hosted 1and1 Exchange.
No syncing with the account. Tried to remove and re-add the account. It removed fine, but now it can't be added back. The Pre gives an error message:
"Unable to validate incoming mail server settings. Check the settings and try again."
It was working fine under 1.1 and prior, since launch day.
It didn't break it for me, it just started actually enforcing the passcode, which is obnoxious. I hate having to type in the passcode every time the screen turns off.
I was expecting that to start happening with mine. (Prior to the Pre, I had a Touch Diamond with WinMo, which had that policy under 1and1.com). Since I've been on the Pre (same provider), the policy either doesn't work or wasn't being pushed to the device.
When I upgraded to 1.2, I didn't get any policy pushes that I could see. It just stopped syncing altogether. During troubleshooting, I unfortunately removed the account from the Pre (thinking it was just "stuck") and now I can't add it back. So my contacts, tasks, calendar, and e-mail from that account are all missing.
I can still access everything from the desktop, but I'm really handicapped right now without the info on my phone.
Same behavior for me - starting enforcing the PIN. I would be OK with the PIN if I could set it to only be required once every 4-8 hours, but every time I unlock the phone is annoying.
This is why you add the hack to automatically enter the passcode. The PIN being asked every time I open my phone is ridiculous.
Luckily it's easily fixed. They managed to create this workaround MUCH faster than it happened with WM. It's exciting just to be a part of this movement. GO WEBOS! :)
Yes, mine is broken. Tried hard reset last night and will not sync. Tried with or without WiFi, still no luck. Waiting to see if someone has a fix.
Works for me. Exchange hosted at Final ASP.
Working here, I keep thinking, do I really want work email on my phone....lol
Unfortunately webOS 1.2 did not break EAS on my Pre and I am still getting work emails on my phone. ;-)
all good here... Exchange 07... I would have to say that before the update I was not forced to have a password on my phone but now I am.. it looks like they made some changes there.I figured that would have been in the 1.1 enhancements with EAS.
Works fine here. I'm wondering if perhaps some of the problems are with an improper/expired certificate on Exchange. The company I work for has Exchange 2003 SP2.
Mine is working fine - so is my staff and their 25 pre's or so :)
Works fine here.
It works fine for me
Works fine for me....exchange 2007, no pin requirement, godaddy cert.
Broke mine.. spent lots of time on Palm support last night and could not get it to work. Very frustrating and lesson learned..don't be quick on the draw to upgrade as I'm dead in the water with out businees emails !! we use 4EMM for exchange service.
may have to get my 755p back in service
Yes, it definitely broke mine. I have exchange account at work. Not forcing a pin.
No syncing with the account. Tried to remove and re-add the account. It removed fine, but now it can't be added back. The Pre gives an error message:
"Unable to validate incoming mail server settings. Check the settings and try again."
It was working fine under 1.1 and prior, since launch day.
same error. removing the account was a HUGE issue for me. I have over 3000 contacts in exchange and my calendar and email are similarly sized. Bad. I am pretty much tied to my laptop until they fix this.
Luckily I don't connect to my Exchange server at work. DON'T EVER WANT IT EITHER. LOL. Hope everyone else gets their issues fixed though. Love my Pre!
It totally broke mine--and I consider myself to be one of the lucky few that had EAS working perfectly from 1.0.
This is REALLY obnoxious--not looking forward to being sans calendar and emails on my device until Palm can get their shit together and release an update.
Going to try to revert to 1.1.
Works fine for me. Using Rackspace hosted Exchange.
Definately broke mine. I'm using AKO Beta mail.
I'm an admin for an exchange 2007 cluster and had no issues with the update nor did my colleague who also sports the pre. I don't understand how it could break an OWA connection since it's pretty straightforward.
Flawless
I strongly recommend anyone with problems not remove the offending exchange account from their Pre. You won't be able to get back your data until they fix it... Learn from my mistake :(
Too late for me. I just got off a call with Palm Tech Support and they insisted they could not escalate the issue until I first removed the exchange account. After removing and waiting 5 minutes with the spinning wheel the account was removed.
I knew there was a risk to losing the email on the device but no big deal, got lots of ways to get email. What I totally forgot is that my OUTLOOK EXCHANGE CONTACTS would be gone. NOT COOL.
works great...
Try setting up the account manually. you will have to enter the server information. i did it with mine and it worked.
Been there. Done that. Doesn't work for me. What provider are you using? I'm on 1and1.
Mine is though OWA (outlook web access) and it is definitely broke. Hope to have it fixed soon.
I have 2 exchange accounts, one from my office and one hosted by 1and1.com. My office account still works fine, but the 1and1 hosted account isn't working.
Update fixed my syncing issues with calendar, and contacts.
No problems syncing with corporate exchange server (2003).
Broke mine (AppRiver hosted exchange). Worked great with 1.1, doesn't play nice with 1.2.
Works just fine for me, course mine has worked just fine since release day as I guess my security requirements aren't as steep, me being the IT Manager and all. :P
No problem for me either. Security policies defined ARE being enforced now (simple PIN). We are on Exchange 2007 SP1 w/ Update Roll-up 8 Installed. Is there any commonality between folks having problems? Such as Exchange Version, Service Pack Level, Patch Level, etc? Or perhaps a specific security policy implementation that is causing the issue? We leave ours at the 'default' for Exch07 SP1 which does require a simple PIN but I've had one all along so I didn't notice that till I setup a test account this morning and it promptly asked me to set one on my emulator.
no problems with mine. I am with intermedia.net exchange 2007
Fine here :)
It broke for me. I'm getting some kind of security certificate error.
Got mine back up and working fine through OWA.
how did you do it? I have OWA also and have not been able to get it working.
Corporate Exchange account - no issues
Working just fine for me.
working fine for me.
Mine is working great.....I had to reload a new certificate and worked great.
people reload your certificates
Works fine with Exhange 2007 SP2 here.
Corp Exchange 2003: No issues here either
Mine seems fine.
No problems sending, receiving or deleting (EAS 2003 w/SP2), and my Pre still works better/faster than everybody else who is forced to use BES w/ BB 8830 Curves.
Works for me Exchange 2003 Server, corrected problem with sending meeting invite responses.
Corp Exchange 2007 SP1, Thawte Trusted Root Certificate...no workies.
Still gonna wait. Thanks to all you early adopters for paving the way for my smooth transition ;-)
I kid, I kid.......
Actually, EAS never worked for me before 1.2. It works perfectly now.
I used to get the "Cannot verify incoming mail server settings", but today on my second attempt (first attempt yield only an Outbox), Exchange sync finally worked. It synced Mail and Calendar (my Exchange account doesn't have contacts).
What did you use as your server URL? Maybe it changed from version 1.1. Thank you.
Mine seems to still be working fine. I got a few calendar alerts today, and have been receiving mail fine since the update. I had to put in the passcode prior to the update, so that's nothing new for me.
Works fine for me with my work Exchange service and GMail's EAS.
Works for me.
One thing I noticed is that when the phone screen was off, the pin card pops up after I put Pre on TouchStone and stays there. I am not sure if it is a bug, or maybe one of those little annoying features better be removed.
Broke mine -- Corp Exchange 2007. I recently switched to the Pre when our corporate upgrade to 2007 caused EAS no longer to work on my 755P. I was thrilled to have it back with the Pre.
works fine and a little faster!
Exchange works here with our security policy (remote wiping.) No complaints there. HOWEVER, the default font changed after the update for Outlook Exchange, and for Gmail, and for Yahoo. Changed from Times New Roman 12 pt to Verdana 12 pt (8 pt in Gmail and Yahoo which is fine) but looks way too big and unprofessional in Outlook. To clarify, looks fine on Pre, but when receiving a message on Outlook Desktop Client, looks different.
Has anyone else noticed? Can we get this looked at please?
Noticed that--and it does look worse now.
Putting a poll in this post would have been far easier. Anyway, no issues from my end.
Broken. Mail2web.com professional exchange 2007.
Pissed.
works fine for me, but i'm not using a hosted exchange option. just connecting to my server at work directly.
Fine for me. Exchange 2010.
1.2 Doesn't work for me (godaddy hosted exchange).
Corporate Exchange Account - stopped working immedietly after WebOS 1.2 update. Was working since day one (June 6th).
Spent 15 minutes on phone with Palm Tech support. They escalated to a level 3 engineer and will get back to me within 24-48 hours.
I don't have problems with mail (Exchange 2007) but I've notices some strangeness about the calendar.
I added a 5 day vacation/out of office and only mon - thu show up as all-day appointments - friday has no mention of it.
broke mine..
I ran into this issue originally while testing the leaked webos 1.2.. while researching it, the only suggestion I was given that I coudn't try was this one -
I found the following ActiveSync setting that was preventing my Pre froming syncing with our Exchange 2007 CA server:
Open your ActiveSync's property and go to "Sync Settings" tab. There is a check box for "Allow synchronization when roaming" option. When this option is checked, then my Pre gets "Unavailble to validate incoming..." message. As soon as I have this unchecked, Pre syncs up with my Exchange server fine. By the way, "Time without user input..." option is set to "15" in my password policy. I also tried 3 minutes and it worked as well (unlike PrimerFender's experience)
To be 100% sure, I had my Pre go through Full Erase during each test.
Hope this helps.
http://forums.palmone.com/palm/board/message?board.id=activesync&message...
I figured it was just a beta issue w/ webos 1.2 leaked image and downgraded to webos 1.1.. but obviously it's still busted.. curious if the suggestion above works for anyone.

ActiveSync? That's from the Palm Treo days, no? Where is there such a setting on the Palm Pre itself?
edit: never mind, I see now you were referring to some property on your Exchange server. Doesn't help those of us who are at the mercy of our IT department.
I don't know if that setting will break something else, but the question is what did Palm do to the code that made it an issue? Further, will it break again when they fix it?
See this link explaining that setting: http://www.proexchange.be/blogs/exchange2007/archive/2009/08/12/preventi...
Works fine for me with my work account, EXCEPT that it enforces the PIN now...sigh
After installing 1.2.0, my Pre seems to be syncing okay for me to my shop's Exchange 2007 setup *crosses fingers*
ARRRGGGGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
YES YES YES ANNOYING PROBLEM!!!
I work for a very large television news network and have my company email (EAS) on my Pre. It was working GREAT until last night's regretful install!!!
I did not know what had happened and thought nothing of it asking me to establish a PIN for my exchange account, UNTIL I REALIZED I HAVE TO ENTER MY PIN EVERY TIME I USE MY FREAKING PRE!
This really sucks balls and I am WAITING for the the fix, they need to release it now! I wish I never installed this update, but hey how were we supposed to know???
my Exchange email is coming in fine!
Since 1.2 update, dose anyone know how to get rid of having to enter a password everytime I use my phone. Research shows a option under screen & lock, but it not there.
you can't. it's set by your work admin. it was supposed to be like this from day-one, but wasn't.
see my post here: http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre/205576-lock-feature-new-how-get-ri...
i have the same issue.
:-\
Just another report that Exchange is still fine for me in 1.2 (my companies exchange server, https, no cert needed to download to the pre).
My company email (EAS) works just fine. I had to delete the old account because it was converted to a POP account, and add the exchange server. I know for a fact that our company uses the PIN policy on other devices but have not seen anything on my device yet.
No longer working for me. Worked fine with 1.1. Need it fixed.
Works fine for me - been working since 1.0.3 to now.
Using Zimbra 6.0.1 w/ Zimbra Mobile Option (EAS Features) - Still no luck with HTML emails - so I use an alias of my account and set it up under EAS so I can sync my calendar and contacts, and I set EAS mail to manual sync. Then I add my real email account under SSL IMAP for secure email, IMAP has no issues with HTML emails, pics, etc. Not sure if this EAS HTML Email issue is the palm PRE's fault or Zimbras.. Other than that, no other issues with calendar / contacts. TASKS still do not sync like they were supposed to in Zimbra 6.x :S
We are also using https:// - so I think this is where everyone is having their issues - when not using that - or bad certificates.
- D2G
Actually, EAS works for the first time on my Pre with 1.2. I was having self-signed certificate issues that I had not been able to resolve, but now it works perfectly.
Looks like Palm did a whack-a-mole
4Smartphone + webos 1.2 = No Exchange Email Synch. Palm took one step forward, two steps back.
On a positive note, I have not had any battery life issues that other people using Exchange have reported.
No issues here...
I'm hosted with 123together.com. I've had no issues since the upgrade.
Corporate Exchange with no problems.
All working fine here! Two EAS accounts on same Pre. No issues. Shared Exchange with 123together.com.
Yes, broke mine. I use exchange.1and1
Palm this is Unacceptable!
I think major issues like this and the lack of any real significant features along with all of the existing bugs/issues that were not addressed points to a very thin development team at Palm.
Not a good sign.
Contrary to other people, WebOS 1.2 fixed my Exchange Active Sync issues. My company uses a Self Signed Certificate with Exchange 2007, which 1.1 and the previous OS releases, had problems with.
What did you use as your server URL? Thank you.
I have tried numerous times and my IT experts have been working on it too... no luck. Broke again. :(
Broke my email - Corp Exchange. This is absolute rubbish. You can't break the most important Internet App!!!!
(Partially) Broken! I use GoDaddy Hosted Exchange w/ Mobile. Worked great prior to WebOS 1.2 update. Now, new e-mails are not showing up. Have not yet checked calendar or contacts.
That said, I have a second Exchange account with my employer, and it still works perfectly.
I use 1and1 and I'm not getting any of my emails either.
broken for me. I am on appriver
Actually, not only is mine still working, but it seems as though it's syncing my work calendar for the first time since I got my Pre. I had been exporting it to Google, but everything showed up today on its own.
EAS still working fine after upgrading to webOS 1.2.
Mail2web Professional broken, Sucks! Anyone know if its possible to use WebOS Doctor to roll back to version 1.1, Hear they have updated that to Darn
corporate exchange working fine.
Spent hours this evening going through old posts in forums trying all of the advice around installing security certificates onto the Pre. It was based on a hunch that 1.2 did something that required certs. No luck. Corporate Exchange Server 2007 using OWA is still broken since the 1.2 update.
A big thanks to Mark's post above. I tested this out and so far it appears to correct the issue. If you have Appriver Secure Hosted Exchange and are experiencing this issue please feel free to submit a ticket or give us a call and we can apply the appropriate policy, which should hopefully correct the issue until a patch is released.
What was the Policy that you changed that made it work again? Thank you.
Thanks AppRiver for posting here in the comments. I would have waited for Palm to fix this. It took less that 90 minutes for AppRiver to apply the fix to my 2 accounts.
Broke my corporate exchange which is absolutely untenable!
in an effort to fix this myself I removed the account, which means I now have zero contacts as well as no mail/calendar.
May as well have bricked my phone. My IT group is looking at this, but they really didn't think there was anything they could do upon initially looking at this. Granted they are all iTards so i'm probably SOL
Well my hosted exchange with 1and1.com stopped working after update. And the Stupid Palm tech support told me to delete the account. Now i lost all my contacts. I'm Pissed...
Don't listen to Palm Support!!!!!!!
I hear people added an SSL to a hosted exchange. How do you do that? And will it help?
It seems to be MOST (but not all) EAS connection problems are with accounts hosted at 1and1.com, me included. I think we need 1and1 (and other exchange providers) to work with Palm together. My strong hunch is that 1and1 servers don't have the correct security settings.
I use OWA and am broken since the update. Removed the account, did a full erase. Now dead in the water.
+1
Corporate 2007 and it broke. So not hosted only.
I use Exchange services from apps4rent.com. No problems works just fine. Both me and my wife use apps4rent exchange on a palm pre both updated both of us no problems.
My exchange works the same as it did before the upgrade. We're using MS Exchange 2003 at my workplace, and forcing a PIN.
Mine does not work. All 3 of my accounts with 1and1 are not synch'ing after the update.
works for me as well, Exchange 2003 and forced PIN, just like 1.1. For grins, I also did a webdoctor reset and the Exchange account still worked fine.
It would be nice if 1and1 would fix this quickly. Back when I had Windows Mobile, they forced a pin. I tried to request that they remote that setting from my account and I got the runaround from a clueless idiot, who kept telling my it was my phone that was the issue, not their server. I tried to explain that it was the security profile settings on the server that were locking it out. I finally ended up hacking it from the back end on my phone.
This needs to be fixed by Palm immediately. Until it is, I'm missing my personal digital life. How pitiful is it that they break something this big with an update?!?
Mine works with no issues but I cant stand the whole pin code addition I hate it with a passion.
My EAS to my corporate Outlook 2007 account broke with the upgrade as well. Yesterday, I deleted that account and lost calendar and contacts like most everyone else. I've been attempting to re-establish that account periodically since then. I did not submit a trouble ticket with my IT guys. Just now (~11:30 AM EDT), I was able to reconnect with EAS and my Pre was able to sync with email, calendar and contacts. Somebody must have figured out a fix somewhere.
Please ask them what they did.
Why is everyone saying Palm fix this. From quick scan of most posts here and in forum, my guess is that it is more than likely improperly configured servers/policies.
Everyone is saying Palm fix it because the issue was introduced with the 1.2 update. Exchange sync worked on every single WebOS update on my phone from 1.0 until 1.1. It immedietly broke on 1.2. All other phones (iPhone, G1, Palm Pre w/1.1) owned by my fellow employees all still work.
It is not so easy to convince an IT department managing 3000+ other employees to make a change that may affect other mobile device users, especially when the Pre represents a small fraction of the employees. They simply won't take the risk.
Palm has got to come up with a client-side solution.
Mine never has worked. Spent countless hours trying to figure out a solution. No help from Sprint or Palm. Took a gamble that 1.2 would fix the issue. Now my only option is to go back to my old Instinct and sell the Pre.
Your options are 1) either properly configure your onsite Exchange server or 2) have your hosted provider properly configure your account. EAS works!
You say it works. (IT DID)
I wish that was true.
Tell me how to set it up with a hosted 1and1 account.
Connecting to my corporate exchange server works much better now. I use a lot of rules to organize my emails into sub-folders. Before this update getting any of the flagged sub-folders to sync was a pain - had to constantly remove and add the account for it to only work briefly. Now it works perfectly.
Seamless here. Corp. Exchange Server (2003).
Mine also broke after I applied the upgrade. I keep getting an invalid certificate error now when trying to re-add it.
has anyone successfully reverted back to 1.1?
mines broken
I wonder what the differences are between those that work and don't? Is it 2003 vs 2007? Specific policies in conflict?
I am on a 2k3 box with 1000+ other users and my EAS (thru OWA) is still working fine (and seems faster no less). I also have my Gmail account and a personal 1and1.com email also working fine. I'm using imap.1and1.com to access and not exchange.1and1.com tho so that may be the factor?
Mine is broken too since update to 1.2, worked fine before...
I've spent several hours on the phone & chat w/ Palm.
Account stopped working, Palm had me delete the account, then could not add it back "Invalid mail server settings".
Was able to add account after unchecking "Allow non-provisionable devices" in Exchange EAS Mailbox Policy. No the account is back, but no Contacts, or Calendar and a non-functioning outbox.
I'm now waiting for level 3 support to call me back...
SBS 2008 (Exchange 2007 SP1)
SBS Generated SSL Cert
It broke my syncing for all my accounts including exchange, gmail, and yahoo. I could see notifications for email but no mailboxes would come up. To fix this i used OS dr and reloaded webOS and the patch again, after that it worked fine.
