Members in our forums are reporting improvements in battery life since updating to webOS 1.2, to the extent that some are even going from a nearly dead battery after a full day of use on webOS 1.1, to having 20-30% battery left by the end of the day.
Measuring battery life can be a fickle thing, though, what with different usage patterns, perceptions, and whether or not Venus is rising. However, using this battery life monitoring utility in the homebrew section, you can get a bit more info to see if what the situation is. (Also, be sure to check out this guide on how to optimize battery life.)
How's 1.2's battery life seem to you?

I haven't noticed much difference based on WebOS 1.2
I have noticed a HUGE difference since installing Quick System Tasks - BETA off of FileCoaster.
This is the best utility by far to conserve battery life. I believe it is only going to get better based on the suggestions being given and the feedback from the developer.
Having the ablity to Toggle of Data, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and even a day/night setting for brightness... makes all the difference in the world for battery stamina.
I had something funny happen with my pre the other day. I was in my office and had my pre on my touchstone and noticed it was not charging. Additionally the signal said it was roaming which should not be the case where I am. I have two other touchstones and tried it on those. It would not charge and was still on roaming. I tried charging it with the USB plug and that worked fine but i could still not get it off roaming or to charge with touchstone. Anyway I left it on the touchstone but didnt have it charging. As a result from it being on roaming it lost power fairly quickly while i was out. When i returned the battery was on red alert and almost drained. After i charged it back upo the problem seemed to correct itself, not sure if it did a soft reset. Was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this since downloading the latest two updates? This never happened before.
it happened to me before, i removed the battery and put it back, and then it worked. I also remember this time when the back of my pre was getting really hot while it was charging,,, and it was not charging at all. Once again i removed the battery and put it back, and then it worked. Just in case I called sprint, and let them know what happened, so if I go to a sprint store and ask for a replacement (battery only), they'll do it without asking me too many things,,,(b/c it already been reported).
I have this roaming problem (once in a while) on my Sprint WinMo phone. I don't know why, but sometimes it just gets stuck in roaming. Soft reset always fixes it. When it reboots it forces a clean tower search.
[Oh, and this usually happens when the phone hasn't been reset for many days.]
its about the same to me and I'm a nets&addict since my phone is always in my hand... And laptop out of commission... I usually do a quick charge around 7pm (I'm a night person so my days start around 1-2pm) chargin for about 30 minutes... But ibelieve there might be a slight increase in battery performance... But in the long run we need a break through in battery technology are we shudnt even think about the next iphone/webOS device that's 4G capable cuz it will only give us 2hrs before its dead!
I've notice that after upgrading to WebOS 1.2, my phone doesn't overheat as much as it use to when running DrPodder podcast app. I don't know exactly where the problem lies, but I'm glad its working better now.
I have had a couple instances where I wake up and check a couple websites from a full charge and in 30 minutes have dropped 15% of my battery. No video being watched or anything. Mostly just checking this site. Connected with wifi too
Well the Mojo framework did get updated, to 201.11 i think, with 1.2 which gave performance improvements, more efficient coding, so battery performance was prolly bound to happen.
For me I havent really noticed a difference in battery performance but that maybe due to the screen is seldomly off :)
Hey that's my Battery Monitor image :p
Hey! That's my App! :P
neville, I thank you for that app!! Great one... Anywho, I think I may have a bad battery, cuz it's been acting a little crazy. So, I can't really tell if it's better or worse..
Robert, you forgot the token "I still don't have a Pre, you insensitive clod!" option in the poll. ;-)
my phone says att where it should say sprint.. no themes installed.. any clues why
screen cap or it didn't happen. 8^P
what's the precentral email address, and whats your email address so I can send it to you
Haven't noticed much of a difference, but I have a charger at home and another at work so I don't see it drop below 50% very often anymore.
I thought it was just my imagination since I had not seen any post about it here on precentral. I noticed a increase of battery life after the patch.. very happy
I have noticed that the battery drains much less when it is idle after installing 1.2. Other than that, it seems the same.
Agreed... the idle battery usage seems to be the biggest change for me.
I installed the battery monitor app.
First thing I notice is in the detailed battery status, the actual % (93) is lower than the Reported UI % (97). I'm using the battery % and icon patch. This difference is probably why I see huge battery drains.
I was using the Actual battery % patch. Perhaps I should switch back. I'm anxious to see what this app will show me.
I voted "it's a little worse".
question...
anyone exp freezes or slacking after the update?
maybe a crash or 2?
maybe when you press a button it repates w/out you holding it?
:/
I set the brightness down about 2/3's from full brightness and turn Data off when I'm on wi-fi (which is alot since wi-fi is popping up everywhere now). Oh, and I set it to Airplane Mode when I don't want calls (the long boot-up time makes it easier to just set it this mode). With those settings and perhaps 1.2, I definitely see a big difference.
Ok here is the run down on how the battery works on 1.1 and 1.2. You will never get a battery battery with any webos update. The reason is because the battery is getting used up 90% by the phone radio not the actual phone device.
I ran test on wifi/gps/evdo off and slight like 10% improvements. (slight phone use)
I ran test on airplane mode on. on both 1.1 and 1.2 with heavy game use and multiple apps running lots of wifi and lots of web. Battery lasted over 3 days. It was working from night time with 6% left till morning at 5%.
So please, please palm fix the dam radio phone module. I can wait for slide and click and led feature. We really need that optimized.
Please note the CPU scaling will not help. The radio module is a totally different CPU.
what's weird is that 3 of the phones we have report no improvement but one (mine) has much better battery life! All running 1.2.1
With 1.1 my battery would die around 7 or 8PM (leaving the Touchstone at 9AM). Last night, with 1.2.1, the battery lasted until 1AM - and that was with an hour a low signal zone where the phone gets really hot because its struggling to reach cell signal. (I wish it would just shut off then)
yea i dont know if anybody noticed but when you drop a call the cellphone gets super hot. we tested the battery and realized that the phone is drawing massive amounts of power when looking for signal or dropping calls.
I originally clicked the poll that 1.2 (and 1.2.1) improved my battery life a little, but I should change that to improved a LOT. :)
From a device that could almost last a whole day with 1.0.3, my Pre is now easily running into the second day without even breathing hard.
Here's a screen shot from the battery monitor after over five hours of a few phone calls, a bunch of email, and a few texts...
The improvement is actually rather amazing, and that's with no apparent loss of abilities or speed - in fact, even the phone app is now smoother and faster to respond.
Well done, Palm!
