Palm has released webOS 1.1 to the Exchange-loving masses, so sayeth the official Palm Blog and excitedly noted in our forums. The key updates are precisely what we predicted earlier this month, to wit:
- IT-initiated remote wipe
- Required PIN with complexity
- Device wipe after a certain number of failed PIN attempts
- Auto-lock
- Improved digital certificates
More interesting, we had also heard tell that there would be a smattering of other bugfixes, battery performance improvements, and UI enhancements. Palm's knowledge base has a list of fixes, which we've included after the break, but there might be some subtler stuff around. So we've started a thread in our Palm Pre forums, "webOS 1.1 is out! What have you noticed?" to track all the updates - After you update your Pre, get to poking around and report back with your findings there!
We had heard that the expected date was July 22nd, but also mentioned that these dates are hard to call, so no big surprise that it took a bit longer.
Oh, and Palm has re-enabled full iTunes sync with iTunes 8.2.1. It's on, Apple!
Have you installed yet? Let us know how that's working out for you in the comments!
Thanks to Jaer for the image!
Update 1: did we mention it's on? Check out how Palm phrased the iTunes support, emphasis ours:
Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync.
There's only one way to describe such brazenness: BOOM!
Version information
Version: webOS 1.1.0
Release date: 23 July 2009
Configuration: Sprint 1.7
New applications
NFL Mobile Live from Sprint
Watch or listen to live NFL games right on your phone.
Feature changes to existing applications
Calendar
For Calendar accounts you create on your phone, the default reminder intervals are 15 minutes for timed events and one day for all-day events. A few notes:
This change applies only if software version 1.1 was on your phone when you bought it, or if you did a partial or full erase on your phone and signed in to your Palm profile again after updating to version 1.1. If you simply update your phone to software version 1.1, the default reminder intervals in Calendar do not change.
This change applies only to Calendar events you create on your phone, not to events that are synchronized to your phone from an online account.
Camera
The Photos application opens more quickly when launched from the camera.
Clock
Enhanced support for time zones in Clock.
When you set an alarm in Clock, an alarm icon appears in the notification area at the bottom of the screen. Tap the icon to display alarm details. Alarm details include the following:
If the alarm is set for the current day, the alarm time appears.
If the alarm is set for tomorrow, the alarm time and "Tomorrow" appear.
If the alarm is set for any day other than today or tomorrow, the day of the alarm appears.
Contacts
Friends added and deleted in Facebook on the web are now correctly added and deleted in the Facebook account in Contacts on the phone.
As soon as you create or makes changes to a Google contact on the phone, the phone begins a sync to reflect those changes in Google on the web.
When you set up an Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) email account, you can enter the mail server name as an IP address.
Support for self-signed certificates with multiple common names has been added.
When you reply to an email in HTML format using an EAS account, the formatting of the sender's original message is now retained in the reply.
Palm's EAS implementation now supports several Exchange ActiveSync Policies, including the following:
PIN/Password Required. IT administrators can ensure a password is assigned to the phone. Administrators can also specify the minimum length of the password.
Inactivity timeout. IT administrators can ensure that an inactive phone goes into a locked state after a certain time period. You cannot set a higher timeout interval for your phone, but you can set a shorter interval.
Remote Wipe. IT Administrators can remotely erase all data on a phone from their Exchange console. IT administrators can also have the device wipe itself if an incorrect password is entered more than a specified number of times.
Messaging
You can enter emoticons in new text, multimedia, and instant messages. Emoticons also display in incoming messages.
If you set the phone to use a 24-hour time format, the message times shown in a conversation appear in 24-hour time.
If you go into an IM account's preferences, all the options are available even if you are signed in to the account. You can tap Remove Account to delete the account, enter a new password to update the password, or tap Sign In to sign in with your updated password. Previously, you needed to sign out of the account before you could use these preferences.
When you delete an IM account, a message now appears asking you to confirm that you want to delete the account.
Phone
When multiple missed call notifications are displayed on the dashboard, the time of the most recent missed call is shown.
When you slide the ringer switch off, a bell icon with a slash is displayed. Previously, the icon was a speaker with a slash.
In Phone Preferences, the Show Contact Matches preference is now turned on by default. When typing on the keyboard in the phone app, the phone automatically displays both the numbers being entered and any contact matches for the characters entered.
System
Improved functionality of person reminders. A person reminder is a notification that you create in a contact entry. The notification appears when you have a call or exchange an email, text, multimedia, or IM message with a contact.
Resolves an issue preventing media sync from working with latest version of iTunes (8.2.1).
When you enter a search term in Card view or the Launcher to perform a universal search, if you select the Wikipedia web search option, results are shown in the Wikipedia Mobile site instead of the Desktop site.
Web
You can now use symbols from the symbols table (Sym
+ key) when you enter text into a web page dialog box.
If you have a page open at a certain zoom level, leave the page, and use the onscreen Back
button or the back gesture to return to the page, the zoom level is restored right away.
A new gesture is now available that works the same as the onscreen Forward
button. To move forward through open web pages, make a short swipe left to right in the gesture area.
When using the Wikipedia drop-down search feature in the address bar, results are shown in the Wikipedia Mobile site instead of the Desktop site.
When you tap a link, the link appears highlighted to indicate it has been activated, even if it takes a moment for the linked page to open.
YouTube
After you enter search text, you can tap the Search
icon to perform a search. You still have the option of pressing Enter
to perform the search.

>> Resolves an issue preventing media sync from working with latest version of iTunes (8.2.1).
It's like a tennis match!
It's ON Apple.
This is so ridiculous. Why would Apple *not* want people to be able to use iTunes, other than penis-size insecurity issues?
because they are apple and its their ball.
You know I was thinking about this the other day. New Palm seems to have a lot of former Apple staff, could it be a shell game for Apple to grab all of us that hate Apple? Could Palm really just be a fake Apple with the Evil Emperor Steve Jobs pulling the strings?
"Why would Apple *not* want people to be able to use iTunes"
Why would Palm make the Pre look like an iPod, instead of working out a proper agreement with Apple? Why didn't Palm bundle something like Songbird to use to sync, or come up with another media sync solution? They hacked their way to a quick solution, and it broke. Now they have to spend time playing a cat and mouse game until the lawyers are called.
iTunes (on the Mac) syncs fine to a number of older Rio and Creative devices, because those companies worked with Apple.
The way Palm chose to handle the situation harms their consumers. It's an advertised feature that may or may not work depending on the situation. Whereas someone with a Rio player has been able to sync to iTunes from version 1 up to 8.2.1 with no problem.
Hacking something yourself is fine, but a corporation using a hack to add a feature to their device that they sell is not a good idea.
I'm sure the fanboys will ignore this and just continue bashing Apple, when it was really Palm who made the first misstep.
Because by making the Pre look like an iPod to iTunes, Palm has eliminated the need for current iTunes users to learn an additional piece of software. Just search the forum for threads about people having difficulties using 3rd party applications to initiate iTunes sync after the Apple update.
It enhances the user's experience. Instead of fiddling with multiple programs and settings, in those famous Apple words, It Just Works.
I honestly don't know why some iPhone users are getting so upset about this. It does not affect nor hurt you. it does not hurt Apple either. People are still going to use iTunes and by music from iTunes. By breaking the sync Apple only hurts themselves by shutting out additional sources of revenue. Pre users are not going to drop the Pre to go to/back to the iPhone over this one issue.
Yah sure. So Palm can continue to rape iTunes so you all can snicker and gloat. How juvenile.
If Palm and Pre are so wonderful, why can't Rubenstein get off his ass and create his own sync platform, instead of riding on someone else's hard work, and stealing what he did while, you know, he was actually working and making millions of $$$ at Apple, a company which you all hate, but seem to forgive Mr. Rubenstein for? Oh, that's right - he's CEO now so rah rah rah Palm! Forget that he stole the iPhone and stuck a shitty hardware keyboard and Palm logo on..
How would you feel if we iPhone users got a hack from Apple to install WebOS - for free - on our phones? Sure, it's ridiculous, but how does it feel when the shoe's on the other foot?
the shoe seems to be up your ass
lmao.. +1
that definitely had me laughing out loud.
That was one long, uninformed, bitter rant. If the iSheep somehow found a way to put webOS on their iPhones, I would hail it as a great day and great achievement. Seriously, wtf do I care? Besides, I hate itunes anyway and think it's a POS.. But to each their own...
OK here's the deal, the iTunes thing isn't a hack, it's been floating around the Linux Open Source world for a while, and you don't need crappy iTunes to sync or add media to a Pre. You can drag and drop into your own file structure and I've also sync with WMP. The only thing that is missing is playlists and the only way you can get them is with iTunes. So yes Palm needs to get off their ass and fix the playlists. However on a user level, I have countless other options to get media on my Pre.
As far as putting webOS on your iPhone, as I understand it everything but the UI is open source Linux, so knock yourself out. Either way using a piece of freeware software with a bundled media selling app to sync a third party device is a far cry from pirating an OS. I think Apple would be more against the idea of WebOS on an iPhone than Palm cause it would prove how lacking their OS really is.
What is Apple really afraid of? Their media customers finding out that there is other devices out there that don't have an Apple logo on the back and cost half as much that can play media files? Apple is already losing out to more affordable laptops, are they worried that they are going to start losing business to more affordable media players and mobile phones?
You are such a ridicolous Apple fanboy. Go back to Cupertino.
Oh shut up! Who cares if palm did that too apple cry me a river get a bridge and get over it.
Haha! Indeed, it is ON! This is going to be fun.
Downloading the 87MB1.1.0 now!
wow and i JUST installed some homebrew apps a few mins ago
your apps should stay, some may not work though.
some developers had to update their apps to work with the sdk's 1.1.
OMGOMGOMG!!! This is awesome! Lets time how fast i download on EV... IT is 4:35 and i have begun the download......... Now.
WIN!!
87MB download. Wow this is big. We'll see how fast the pre will pull it on WiFi....
It's on like Donkey Kong.
Apple will continue to look the fool; they will break the connection with the Pre, only to have Palm patch it.
There is really no way for Apple to lock out Palm without shutting out some of the 1st and 2nd gen iPods.
took me 9 minutes on WIFI
To be honest, I didn't care if Palm addressed this issue with itunes but now that they actually have its awesome!! Lol
I just piddled. Downloaded and installing in under 15 minutes.
"Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync."
loving it.
Downloaded and installed!
Took me roughly 30 mins to download via 3G. Can't connect to the WiFi at work :(
It's installing right now... almost finished!
NFL APP!!! is awesome
Im sooo gald they fix it .. BRING It apple
"PALM BACKHANDS APPLE"
Voila my headline for the tech pundits tonight.
The plot thickens!
it's almost like palm was waiting for the iTunes update...
If only Palm had explained any of the security issues I had found in 1.0.4 that were fixed in this release.... :(

Palm webOS 1.1 enhances support for enterprise -- and beyond
Share
“Pre” and “business” just got a lot friendlier! Today we released Palm webOS 1.1, which brings several additions to our support for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), including remote wipe, PIN/password requirements, inactivity timeout, improved certificate handling, and more. You can find more details about how Palm webOS fits into your business environment here.
In addition to these treats for business users, Version 1.1 also includes a few other goodies for everyone -- like support for emoticons in the messaging app, and the ability to set “person reminders” in the contacts app (next time you get a message or phone call from that person, a message pops up showing you a reminder to ask them about their vacation in Maui -- cool, huh?). Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That’s right -- you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1).
For a list of the new features of Palm webOS 1.1, take a look at the release notes at www.palm.com/webos-pre-sprint-en.
By the way, all these updates are delivered automatically to your Pre wirelessly. Over-the-air updateslet you automatically get new webOS features and security updates -- all you have to do is tap to accept.

Mine downloaded and then told me it would not Validate upon trying to install. What's up with that?
You know what I was thinking about all this iTunes thing... Apple is playing right into Palm's hands. Rubenstein knows how to mess with iTunes and all this back and forth is amazing publicity for Palm. Did anyone see how many articles and blog posts came out because of the scuffle last time?
Brilliant PR move by Palm. And it makes Apple look petty and bully-like at the same time.... brilliant.
Has anyone had problems with WHERE since downloading the update?
Yes brings up blank page in Where. Maybe re installing it or they need to update it.
I have reinstalled and reset the phone. Must be a bug!!
MY WHERE ISNT WORKING EITHER.............
After the upgrade to webos 1.1 the WHERE app was showing a blank screen for me too. But there was an update for the app and that fixed it.
Yes brings up blank page in Where. Maybe re installing it or they need to update it.
There is an update to Where after the 1.1 update. Just install and run...
My pre is continuously resetting... Any suggestions?
If it does it when you close it you have the battery problem.
It's great that they've made some UI fixes, but the update doesn't really address the kinds of things I really wanted to see improved:
1) Better copy and paste (not just in user-editable fields)
2) Forwarding text messages with images
These seem like pretty basic issues to me, so it's a little annoying that instead of those fixes, we get the addition of redundant gestures (i.e., gestures that perform functions that the keyboard already does).
I dunno. I was just hoping for a bit more, given the widespread acknowledgement of the bugs and half-hearted implementation of some features.
Still love the Pre, of course, but I feel like there were some easy fixes that got neglected. (Not to take anything away from the homebrew developer that came up with it, but you'd think that if a non-Palm developer could figure out a way to implement forwarding a text message, that Palm would at least use that in an update, to give us that feature. I mean, is it me, or is that just lazy?)
Not every requested feature can make it into every update. I don't think that's lazy at all, it's just life. We'll probably get better c/c/p and text FW at some point. I don't think it fair to say these features got "neglected". Things just take time.
As a software developer, I've never been on a project where we didn't struggle with which requested features to include given our limited time/money/resources. So you try and hit as many important things as you can and touch some of the not-so-important-but-easy-to-do things to fill in the time line.
No matter what we do, there are ALWAYS things that we must push off, which means there are ALWAYS customers we have yet to please.
I assume this is true for Palm, Apple and every other company out there.
Although Tom is correct is some respect, Palm did give choice. It's not like syncing with Itunes is the only option.
The notification sound of incoming txt msg changed! I think I like this one better!
I thought they had split text and email sounds or that my audio was fudged. Neither was the case. However, this sound is a bit less abrasive, no more "clink clank!"
now it's more like "bing bong!"
The charging sound also made the same change. I personally like it better. I think it's softer on the ear and more futuristic sounding.
what they should put on apple is freaking getting a good copy/paste system in place. Not being able to copy text in a text message/email/web sucks.
AGREE WITH THAT!!!
I *LIKE* the new charging sound! Much smoother and sexier, like my lil pebble's curves.
Camera load is much much faster and it seems the photo viewer is too.
Not sure what the major difference is in the Alarm feature it seems about the same.
Not sure where the emotions are for the text messaging. UI is confusing. Maybe I'm missing it. Tried SYM and didn't notice a difference. Still no support for Yahoo. That is a big one for me.
Personal reminders works but unsure how useful this will be.
Web stuff is a major improvement. I hated having to resize everything again and having to guess that the right link was tapped. The gesture area works if you have the advanced gestures option off.
Don't see the point of the YouTube search icon but can see it may help some with the UI.
Over all the device is feeling a lot faster and smooth. I noticed a big change with loading apps and viewing photos. Seems to be less lag but would like to see it faster. The Music app loads a lot faster. Not see the huge lag between it opening and the options loading.
Can someone post the output of uname prior to updating? I think that Palm may have updated the kernel. Thanks.
What they need to do in this or future updates is provide a local hotsync similar to our former Palm O/S machines. This will allow us to sync our Contacts, Calander, Task and possible notes from the Business world that use Microsoft Outlook. For a company that was a pioneer of taking the data with you on your PDA (a term we do not here much of any longer) and look at the contact or event when on the road.
Now the only solution is CompanionLink for Google which is an adequate program but the real weak link is Google Contacts. The other issue is the Sync between Google Contacts and the Pre. In the old days before June 6th and with Palm O/S one could set Desktop overides handheld or vice versa so you would not get these terrible duplicates.
The other option is to sync over WIFI but that is not an option for most people in an office to add Wifi equimpment to their desktop or laptop if company owned.
The first company to write the software will have the best selling app hands down. It will not be that complicated. Use the USB to micro USB cable that came with your charger unit (Used to drag files already) and load the new app and press a button and bring the data into the device. WOW that is a $100.00 program guaranteed to sell the best utility program and app that more than just me need.
:)
Yeah after the update the Where app isn't working right.
Delete WHERE and Reinstall It
then it should work
Does anybody know of a place where we can make suggestions to Palm on improvement they can make on the device ? (excluding Tweeter)
http://www.palm.com/us/company/feedback.html
One word. BRICK u palm users so we APPLE can laugh at palm.
Huzzzah!
Hey Palm, how about instead of acting like a 16 year old Linux hacker, you reach a business agreement with Apple, like every other company that licenses iTunes technology, so that I don't have to guess whether or not my music will sync this week?
Stupid, immature company playing stupid, immature games.
Is this you Bill Gates?
I think it is safe to say that the spoiled little child that is Apple will not share their toys with anyone. Otherwise people wouldn't spend way too much for their iPods and other iProducts. See the deal with iTunes is even though it sucks it is the industry standard and most people think the proper name for an MP3 player is iPod. The thing that sucks is that it is still the only way to get playlists onto the Pre.
If they were infringing on any copyrights, I am sure Apple would have the lawyers on it and not the programmers. What Palm did is no more immature than Apple's I'm a Mac commercials...now those are immature and mostly outright lies...and I am typing this on a Mac.
This Mac/Windows/Linux user agrees with you about the "outright lies".
Just did my update and Where *IS* working, not sure why others are not ??
Where is working for me as well.
Did anybody find emoticons? I haven't. Had my wife send one from 755p and didn't manifest. (I don't care about itunes. The program is so heavy and bulky it makes my tower lean to one side).
Just type them on the keyboard...a smile is colon dash close parenth :-)
Just noticed.. I thought they actually made it like the old PalmOS. I'm starting to get frustrated with this damn phone not coming with simple thing that Palm phones have had for years.
SINCE THE UPDATE MY WHERE APP. IS NOT WORKING....
There's an update for the where app. Install it
I found a bug with how personal contact reminders are saved. More information can be found on Palm's support site.
Has anyone figured out how to get the Exchange policies to enable? I have an Exchange account that has policies but was able to sync etc without it prompting me to create a password etc like my WinMo devices do.
I am very disappointed that 1.1 has not cured my certificate error problems in EAS. Oh well!
No improvements to the PIM apps, and still no calendar or email search. These fixes are all things that should have been in the release version, and do nothing to address the real weaknesses for my use.
When I connect my Pre to my laptop, and choose "Media Sync" it opens iTunes, but for some reason devices don't show up for syncing? anyone know how to resolve this? Thanks.
LOL I love that they went back at Apple. I love to see the underdogs punch the "favorite" in the face.
Where are these so called emoticons???
I can send but cannot receive emoticons, at least from a Treo. You have to type them. . .there is no selection chart that I can find.
"Updates" is hanging again. Is there any way to avoid deleting everything off the phone before it will recognize there is an update?
http://www.dailytech.com/Hacker+Says+iPhone+is+Incredibly+Insecure+Usele...
iphone unsuitable for business.... palm releases 1.1 to fix eas and business features... fun!
First and foremost I want to say that I love this phone, and fully understand that it is a dot "O" product, and want to be a part of the solution. Therefore please read the following in that vain.
Updated to 1.1.0 yesterday and have had a few different issues since. First when I attempt to bring the phone out of a "sleep" mode the response time is very, very slow. The first time it did this I hit the buttton a few times, and then the pre responded in kind by turning on, off, on, off.
Also, I am not sure if it is from this update, but my battery life is pathetic. I was at about a 83% charge at 5am this morning when the alarm I setup on it went off, (the phones location services were completely off, wifi off), pulled it off of its charger, put the phone down and went back to sleep. 3 hours later when I got up and picked up the phone the battery was at 22%, and I had not even used the thing.
One other thing that I did yesterday was that a friend of mine and I went from Wilmington NC (where we live) to Raleigh NC, and I was using the navigation app, and the satelite icon was showing the entire time with a red x next to it. Having not used the app before my questions are:
1.) Is this included in the everything plan, or was I not told something?
2.) Is the satelite coverage different in different parts of the country? Is this expected in NC?
3.) While using the navigation app I set the palm on top of the dashboard, and this was at night, and found when I picked it up that it was VERY hot. Is this to be expected?
If possible, I would like to revert back to the 1.0.8 build I had on before updating to 1.1.0, as the performance, and I think, battery time was much, much better.
I look forward to any constructive comments or suggestions. Feel free to email me directly at brailsford_alan@hotmail.com.
I see a bunch of different cert. issues on here, and I can only say that using the web servers cert from a self signed domain DID NOT WORK!
However once I got the root cert from the CA I have had no issues whatsoever. My domain is running server 2003, Exchange 2003, latest sp, have my own CA root. If anyone has questions with a scenario such as this you can email me at brailsford_alan@hotmail.com.
Now make a freakin spellchecker update
