webOS 1.1 for the Palm Pre may be released within a month, including improved Exchange Active Sync policies and Security. An anonymous tipster has sent in some details on what we can expect with webOS 1.1. The majority of the updates look to be focused on beefing up the Palm Pre's enterprise and corporate chops by adding plenty of EAS improvements, including:
- IT-initiated remote wipe
- Required PIN with complexity
- Device wipe after a certain number of failed PIN attempts
- Auto-lock
- Improved digital certificates
We've also heard from other sources that the update will also likely include more applications -- though whether that will come via an expanded selection of 3rd party apps in the App Catalog or via more apps written by Palm is unclear.
The above features for Exchange are absolutely necessary for the Pre to have a shot at serious enterprise adoption, so we're happy to see these features being rolled out even though they won't necessarily benefit the majority of consumers out there.
We'll see how it pans out, Palm is said to be aiming on releasing the update within 30 days.
Thanks anonymous tipsters!

Thnks
I totally agree, plus how about a usable memo pad with categories and some security... that's the other thing I'm dying for.
Great news if this is true. Please add text forward and Im a happy camper Palm. More apps is needed ASAP!!
About time! I hope some of those "feature changes to existing applications" also includes a lot of missed features (PIM updates to get things at least on par to what I had with PalmOS).
This is the big one.
Get the big four working locally. Google is spyware.
Yeah, good thing your local PC is immune from spyware, viruses, and hard drive failures. Oh wait...
Then stop using Windows and start backuping, retard.
A Sprint store employee told me this very same info when I went to exchange my defective Pre the other day. He seemed to think it would be out by the end of July.
He seemed to think text forwarding would be included in the update, BTW.
thank the gods
I'm hoping it includes a fix for the reception issues. While I was able to get a free Airrave, I prefer to be able to not use it when at home.
I called Sprint to get an Airave and they told me to get bent (go to the local Sprint store same thing).
Not everything is an "issue" to be fixed by a phone. You clearly live on the fringes of cell service. It sucks and we all wish it didn't happen to us, but these things happen, so accept it. Maybe your last phone had "just" enough sensitivity to make living on the fringe acceptable, but these things are all part of the design limitations of phones; I'm sure the Pre would have better reception if it had an extending, external antenna, but then it would be a joke.
This is great news. My fingers are crossed!
Install your homebrews now, installation may change during the update....
This is ludicrous. The date on the memo clearly says May 19, 2009. 30 days from then is June 18, and it is now July.
FAKE.
LOL I am sure "PreCentral.Net" (that would be the graphic right above the "May 19th") would tell everyone that this is not an official Palm Slide. Guess not.
That, sir, is called a watermark that was added by PreCentral.net to keep their rights to the picture. This watermark is not part of the "original" document.
Why would they back-date the watermark?
They didn't backdate the watermark. The date you're seeing. That's the date on the memo.
The question then becomes, why would the date on the memo be May 18, when that date puts the update on June 18th (less than 2 weeks after the Pre's release), when it's now July?
I can see why people might think it's a fake, but the date actually makes it less likely that it's a fake. What's more likely: that a hoaxster would make an obvious mistake with a date, or that Palm would be behind schedule with an update?
Personally, it makes more sense to me that Palm would simply be behind schedule.
Hope some update we could get Yahoo chat
And Yahoo! calendar and contacts, while you're at it.
I'm hoping to see better email deleting behavior too - it kills me to not get next message view when I delete a message - probably costs me 10 minutes a day in wasted tapping...
And landscape view for email without crazy keystrokes!
One more thing - LinkedIn in Synergy would be sweet. There are lots of phone numbers and email addresses there that I won't ever put in my address book, but would be lovely to have available on demand without going to an app. (the weakness of the iphone - apps required for too much)
Agreed. That would be fantastic.
YES.
I agree with dcoaster. It clearly is dated May 19th. I think someone is laughing at PreCentral.net right now :(
I think it might be a fake. Look at the date on the bottom right of the image, May 19th?
If they actually want to sell some of these phones, Palm had better correct other major problems like the e-mail Reply/Forward formatting loss. And they have a huge number of missing basic features like the ability to select the notification sound.
WebOS better be a huge update soon!
neither of those issues seem to be "major" issues.
For you, that may be true. But for people using the Pre for business e-mail, the inability to REPLY or FORWARD a message is pretty darn major.
"WebOS better be a huge update soon!" Or what? You don't like WebOS take the phone back. Your threats make you sound silly. (I agree that those are not major misses)
Whether *I* take my phone back or not will not affect Palm. However, they will be affected by thousands of returns, or worse, missed sales because customers refuse to take a chance and hope these problems will be corrected in the future.
I'd prefer for my phone's OS to be an OS and not an update.
I am sorry but whilst there are a lot of things Palm could improve upon no one really thinks it is critical that they put "the ability to select notification sounds" anywhere NEAR the top of the list.
They have a few "challenges" in the enterprise PIM requirements space first.
A key one for example is the lack of the ability to add a contact (from the Palm contacts or the Exchange GAL) to an aapointment on the Pre!!
So people can setup meetings with..themselves !!!!
Sorry but notification sounds drops in my list of priorities!
I totally agree with this!!! I was so upset when I couldn't pick a messaging ringtone!
i have notification on my pre..... ringtone seperate for email..text and others.
Ooh ooh ooh, How bout if they finally add the video capability... or more apps that you can view with landscape mode... because.... well, I LOVE LANDSCAPE MODE!!!! Love you Palm!!!! Muah
THANK YOU!! Everybody seems to be more concerned with these so called "major" issues like deleting/landscape emails. IMO these are more convenience issues, nothing is impared but it's and inconvenience. Why doesn't anyone care that there is no video recording? Even if you won't use it its still an added feature that should have been here already. Plus it's just another thing other phones (iphone/G1) have above the pre.
Ah... but the iPhone is didn't get video recording (or copy/paste) until this, it's third version! If you have a Gen 1, or Gen 2 iPhone you can't record video, or copy/paste anything. Let alone multitask.
I think it's safe to say this would be one of the included applications (if this rumor is true):
http://support.sprint.com/doc/sp12723.xml?selectedDeviceId=11160&docid=1...
If it is pre-installed on Pre's post Aug. 1st, I assume there is some lead time for the Pre image process and getting them in the pipeline. That really leads to an OS update in the last week of July at the latest.
Thanks, for the heads up. I can't wait for NFL Mobile Live.
I second that - can't wait 4 football season. Go Texans and whoever is playing the Titans! ;-)
I can't wait for College Football to start either. Hook 'em!
Does the May 19th slide date mean that this is referring to the 1.02 update that was available right after launch (and that came loaded on some Pres at that point)? I hope not.
SEE? All the Prepeople just hang on, goodies are coming.
This tip is about as good as the tip of a rush of apps coming our way. I agree that someone is laughing pretty hard right now.
I hope it updates more important features, like being able to remove the NASCAR app and being able to change the text messaging audio.
What about categories for applications? Or calendar search? WebOS has really dumbed down applications compared to PalmOS. Come on. It's not like Palm worked for years on WebOS. Oh wait.
I think the category for applications thing will be solved when they allow you to make app pages (instead of just the 3 that are there now). Seeing as how that is currently in the code and working perfectly (except that you have to uncomment stuff) tells me that they'll add it for 1.1, but who knows.
The date could be perfectly de document's creation date. It's not difficult to think the updates are scheduled. Or not...
and "Next 30 days" could be perfectly "next 30 days" (from previous update).
the apps on the palm pre are they free 2 download?
does it have yahoo messanger?
and have they fixed the problem with the battery to where u dont have stick a piece of paper to hold it in place tight?
May 19th LOL
Well, this website proves the May 19th thing wrong.
http://support.sprint.com/doc/sp12723.xml?selectedDeviceId=11160&docid=1...
So the update may be coming out before August 1st. If 1.1 doesn't come out before August 1st, then there will be some kind of software update before then.
Yeah... I could care less about some people's "major" updates they want.
I want video recording and flash. =/
I hope this update fixes the EAS meeting scheduling feature problems. For example when I get a meeting request on my Pre and I either accept or decline the request the meeting originator does not get the notification message. Currently there is no way to include a message in this acknowledgment message, but that is of little consequence because the meeting originator never gets any message from the Pre. It would be nice to originate meeting request when on the road with the Pre.
No mention of improvements to the PIM apps or searching of the calendar and email. Without those features, it's still a non-starter for me.
word!
Will it run Crysis....j/k...
Yeah, how about some notes syncing. I have notes that I don't want to retype.
What about video recording? Anything about that?
love my pre. Missing alot compared to my blackberry storm. Love the OS way better than RIM.
Let's assume for a minute that May is a typo and it should be June 19. That would mean an update in a week and a half. Sounds like a reasonable schedule rather than a hoax.
Not a major issue, but how about a scroll bar for long web sites? Or any scrolling app for that matter. Nice to know how far into a page I am.
Is 1.1 going to fix the EAS mail formatting issue. Everytime I reply to an email, it destrys all prior formatting. And that absolutely sucks.
Steenking double post
From what i heard from a Sprint person was that the next update will most likely have a camcorder in it....
I really hope they add video recording soon, like Google finally did with Android. I also hope flash with keyboard support comes soon.
cause theres come a time when a special moment is going to happen and u wanna get it on video, and yes please let us choose our messaging tones, cause i always miss some text messages, or emails, its frankly not loud enough!
Thank goodness. :D.
Question, why is everyone so hung up on video? We all knew the phone wasn't going to have video.
Anyone who thinks they're getting video on 1.1 is brain dead.
I haven't seen anyone complain about this anywhere, but it is driving me up the wall.
I'm using Outlook 2007 and Exchange 2007.
If I create a calendar appointment on the Exchange server and assign one or more categories to it and then edit it on the Pre, when it syncs back to Exchange, the categories have been deleted and replaced by a colored label and the appointment is now a meeting request. Each time that happens, I have to cancel the meeting request and re-select the categories in Exchange. That I can live with for a little while, but I hope it gets fixed soon.
I do have to say that I am very pleased that the Pre supports multiple Exchange accounts (not even WM6.1 does that)! It just looks like there are a few little kinks to iron out still.
I love you spelling.... dawg.

Lots and lots of desires here. I wouldn't count on this first update addressing very many of them. I think patience is going to be a requirement to be a happy Pre owner.
THIS WOULD ACTUALLY BE THE 3RD UPDATE SINCE LAUNCH 1.02 1.03 1.04 OH THIS WOULD BE 4TH 1.1 FOR WHAT ITS WORTH SPRINT REP SAID TEXT FORWARD VERY VERY SOON ALONG WITH VISUAL VM AND CAMCORDER THIS SUMMER BUT WHO KNOWS WHO CARES POINT IS WE HAVE THIS PHONE A FULL 6 MONTHS BEFORE ANYONE IN WORLD I SUSPECT THEY WERE NOT READY FOR A RELEAS BUT CONTRACTS SAID THEY HAD TO SO THEY GAVE US A PHONE WITH SOME GOOD FEATURES AND BY JAN IT WILL BE READY FOR EVERYONE WITH LOTS OF STUFF AND THE SDK WILL BE OUT BY OCTOBER SO THAT WOULD ALL MAKE SENSE AND YES I MEANT TO USE CAPS THIS SHIT NIS SO TIRING I WANT THIS I WANT THAT U KNEW TEH SPECS WHEN U GOT IT R WERE U TO STUPID TO CARE IF NU DIDNT GET ONE BECAUSE IT DOESNT HAVE THINGS U WANT GOOD U MADE AN INFORMED DECESION GOOD FOR U AND OH FUCK APPLE

While we're making our wishlist i'm eventually hoping that they add more slots to the shortcut bar. It would be cool if you could scroll through it.

This is awesome. One thing everyone has to remember when commenting on features of updates, most of you are complaining about issues you have with the phone, meaning you bought one already. While it is important to keep customers happy, it is more important to get new customers. The EAS issues for enterprise shut them out of an entire market that they had a very good presence in. I cant speak for most large companies, but as the blackberries and treos get old in my company, people are replacing them with iphones. I had returned my pre on the launch day because of the lack of support, I will buy one again the day 1.1 is released.
What about an audio recorder for memos... even my free samsung had that...
This upcoming OTA update to improve Pre's enterprise manageability was covered in a 451 Group report on June 1st.

WHAT I NEED IS MORE "GOOD" APP
Oh,Folks, Please stop with the dates discussion on the picture already. That's as @nAL as it gets!
This in from Sprint:
Palm Pre Updates
Demo phones on display:
Steps are being taken to remove the demo software.
The demo software will automatically be removed with the next OTA SW update (available on or near 7/22/09).
Email formatting issue:
Issue is being worked. A fix will be available in a future software update.
Improvements coming with next OTA software update:
Facebook friends will sync with your PC and your Palm Pre
Picture messaging enhancements
EAS email support that allows an IP address input
Ampersand and other symbols can be used in web application input
SMS will be able to see all "To" contact properties
Emoticon support
SMS - Timestamp 24 time capability
YouTube search / enter key enables searches
Removes the On Device Demo from retail display units
Palm Pre Battery Performance:
Never place a piece of paper or other material into the battery well of the Palm Pre or any Sprint device.
The Palm Pre battery fits perfectly in the device and adding a piece of piece of paper will not improve device performance.
This is official!
i just got a pre yesterday and our it can not get it to do the EAS properly. we are on exchange server 2007, windows 2008 and he has tried everything. it all has to do with the certificate, we keep gettin the certificate invalid, check date/time message. do you think this update will fix this issue?? i really don't want to return the phone but i'm not sure what other options i have. do we know how much longer now until the update? help!!
Some may underestimate the Notifications issue. As a physician who receives text messages from my answering service, this notification (with vibrate, with loudest volume) will not wake me up at night. It has no repeat function. It is often inaudible in group settings. Nope, I have no hearing problems. My wife awakes at the drop of a pin; she sleeps right through it. It is a fundamental make or break issue, and I know physicians are not alone in their frustration with this limitation. I can go back to being called by the answering service, but that is a huge step backwards in terms of time, technology, documentation and functionality. Love the phone, but I will ditch it and return to my previous (HATE the crackberry)phone if no improvements are imminent.
Your best bet right now is to use the My Notification homebrew app (http://forums.precentral.net/homebrew-apps/188729-my-notification-v-1-0-...) to replace the standard notification sound with a loud, long sound you provide. As a second alternative, have you considered putting powered speakers next to your bed, so you can amp the Pre's sound? {ProfJonathan}
very usefully blog
