webOS 1.04 Released for your OTA Downloading Pleasure

webos 1.04 download

jwdesselle sends word and our very own Update app confirms - webOS 1.04 is available to be pushed out to a Pre near you.  This comes a mere 10 days -- 10! -- after the 1.03 update.

We're awaiting word from Palm's site as to what the update contains (and whether or not it breaks our homebrew install method).  More information as we get it -- but if you're a homebrew fiend, we tentatively suggest you wait until we know just what's in here.  Meanwhile, our forums members are already talking about the update here.

Thanks jwdesselle and everybody else who sent this in!

Update 1: this Palm forum post has the update doing the following:

Fixes:
Unauthorized applications could be installed without having physical access to the device

kyle2dotcom says that the non-rooted homebrew apps are still there and that's indeed true.  However it looks like the non-rooted homebrew install method (whereby you email it to yourself) is now dead in the water.  I just emailed myself the SimplyFlipFlops app and the installation failed.  Looks like the email method has been closed, folks.  Paging Pre Dev Wiki.  More here.

Update 2: Palm has updated their Knowledge Base with the official info on the update.  "This release addresses several security issues with Palm webOS software." They also offer a special thanks to Townsend Ladd Harris for helping identify the security issue.

Woohoo!

I just remembered how Dieter got onto us about not sending in the info through the Contact Us/Tip Us link. So, I did.

Too bad I could not send in any info about the update, it's not on Palm's website yet.

That bites about not being able to email install links anymore. Good thing I installed the Translator app before updating. Now I can curse Palm in a different language!! hehehe

No biggie. You can still side-load homebrew apps, no? Maybe PreCentral can setup a homebrew-app download server/page.

Ha! I do believe that the PreDevs from this site's very forum are responsible for that one popping up inside a week. It sucks for having fun, but that was a pretty gaping hole. Good on ya, Palm.

EDIT: And might I add that it was convenient and benevolent timing that the SDK was leaked a few days before they plugged up this hole.

This may annoy some of the early homebrewers but that was a serious security hole and needed to be patched.

Right there with you. I can be totally crude to the spanish and greek girls i know without needing anyone to help me.

Does anyone know how we can install homebrew apps now?

Read the forums or check out the site the devs are keeping. It's not for the feint of heart as it requires some knowledge of Linux, etc.

Just remember to have backups before starting. Also doesn't hurt to have Palm's restore program in case you need to reset the clock, so to speak.

Oh, and hey Dieter... you might add another update to this article that's still showing in the right pane since this is confirmed:

Hate to give the kiddies false hopes, y'know.

Good catch!

roger that, will need to put a loft of updates in the forums too.

I am sure the homebrew app installation update does not take up the entire 12MB of the download. What else is included?

Anyone test out sending yourself a wallpaper from this site? It didn't work for me now.

installed 1.04 and the translator app still works

I am replacing my pre today or tomorrow because of dead pixels, do you think it will back up the homevrew apps? Will the translator/tip calc be on my new phone when I restore?

Somebody figure out how to put apps on from USB already. Theres gotta be a way, because they phrase it as "without physical access"

I was thinking about installing the translator and sound notification app before I am forced to update to 1.04. Have you guys had any adverse reactions on your phone after downloading these trusted apps? Speed, battery life or any other changes? I realize that I don't have to root my phone, but I am still apprehensive to mess it up. Are they worth it to download?

Thanks.

Too bad Palm can't be as quick to fix all the bugs they left in the code, and to release the SDK, and to actually have a App Store with apps in it, as they are to keep us from putting our own apps on there.

The Pre is so not ready for prime time.

I was under the impression that this update *was* to fix bugs. I really haven't run across any but a security hole like this is a bug that was found and patched like any other system.

Also, last I checked, there are about 30 apps with more to come soon. It's been said many times that they wanted to launch with a simpler set of apps, work out any last minute issues, and keep developing 3rd party apps for later release. You sound like you want everything now now now like a child. Have you ever developed a device like this or even software for a new platform? I would guess from your posts that you have not.

All the bad about the homebrew apps apart, has anyone else noticed how fast the apps, especially the app store and camera, open up now. You can actually yake a picture wjile something is happening

I don't think a single functional bug fix or enhancement was made with this release. Otherwise Palm would have noted it on the release notes page like they have done for the last two releases ( http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/na/pre/p100eww/sprint/solutions/article... ).

This was strictly a security patch made to prevent apps from being installed via the homebrew method -- for our own safety and the integrity/reputation of the platform.

After every new release many people report improved performance. However, this is most likely a function of the release requiring a reboot. The performance of the Palm Pre is always improved whenever you reboot. I am a very heavy user and reboot once a day to keep the system purring.

Does anyone know if they fixed the e-mail reply/forward format bug? That one is pretty important.

It's official. Palm has had more updates to WebOS in 3 weeks than they had with the 700p in 3 years. Nicely turned page.

Didn't Palm say something about installing apps using the App Catalog and third party websites (site like palmgear.com). I wonder how they are going to allow for the 3rd party installs?

Maybe Im crazy, but now when I close an app by sliding it off the top of the screen, it makes a whooshing sound. This did not happen prior to the recent upgrade.

@matt yes it did

I have used my phone extensively since I got it June 6th, and it never made that sound. It may have had the capability, but it was not set or did not work. But the moment it rebooted after the new install, it started.

Sounds like there was something going on with your phone then. Mine has done it since day one as it should have.

Thanks for a great app. I just went to the Palm website and it only has 4 languages to download thus far ... but I read on precentral that it works with 45 languages. Do you know when Italian/English will be avail. for download? Need by late Oct. Thanks again and congratulations!
