We don't know just what it's going to give you, but we do know that you may as well get yourself to some sweet WiFi (or not, if you're EVDO's good, thanks ebernal718!) and install the 1.03 update for the webOS from your Updates app (It'll be mandatory to update eventually anyway).
It's 13 megs of goodness, though, and our forum members are on it and reporting speed and signal strength improvements -- though that often happens during the heady minutes after a new update as people are still the glow of the newness. If nothing else, it does appear clear that several apps from the browser to backup to mail are being touched.
One thing's for sure - the days of Palm not issuing updates for their devices may indeed be well and truly over. It's magical. Let us know - anything seem new or better for you after the update?
Thanks to everybody who sent this in!
Update: pavvento makes with the details from Palm's official doc on 1.03:
Calendar
- Events created in your Google calendar—either in Calendar on your phone or in Google online—that contain a symbol or accented character in the event name can now synchronize. Previously, including a symbol or accented character in an event name prevented the event from synchronizing.
- Changes made to Google events on the phone now sync with Google online within a few minutes.
- The sync interval for Google events has been decreased from every few hours to every 15 minutes.
Clock
- If you create a weekday alarm on a weekend, the alarm sounds only on weekdays. Previously the alarm would sound on the weekend also.
Contacts
- Changes made to Google contacts on the phone now sync with Google online within a few minutes.
- The sync interval for Google contacts has been decreased from every few hours to every 15 minutes.
- Power performance in areas where wireless coverage is sporadic or unavailable has been enhanced.
- Non-SSL Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) mail servers are now supported.
Other
- Miscellaneous updates for Email, Phone, and other applications.
Update 2: Greg (and others in our forums) are reporting that Classic has ceased to function after the update -- though others are saying it's working fine. If you're depending on Classic for something, you might want to hold off just a bit before you pull the trigger on this one.

I am having trouble connecting.
On Wifi as I type this: "Unable to connect. Try again later."
keep trying i had the same issue i think alot of users are trying to download, after about 5-10 or trying i got a connection.. email is so much faster
You actually DO NOT need wifi in order to get the update I just installed mine while sitting near an expressway had wifi turned off and I installed in in 15 minutes (that's with the 10 minutes you can't use the phone)
Yea Palm!!! Keep the updates coming. The timeliness of each update directly correlates with my faith in Palm (and maybe their stock, too?)!

The phone will state: "Checking for updates..." for quite a while (3-4 minutes) and then give me the error message above.
I'm going to try a soft-reset and see if my Pre wants to update. Could it be that the network is now swamped with many others trying to download the update at the same time?
If you rooted your Pre and loaded in dropbear, you'll find you can still SSH in.
Hmm, still having issues getting the update to install. After a reset of the Pre, I'm still getting the "Unable to connect. Try again later." message.
Any suggestions? I haven't done any rooting of the Pre or anything out of the ordinary.
I hope it fixes my Wi-Fi ):
I'll know in 10 minutes.
I'm getting the following error:
The Update failed to properly validate. This problem can usually be fixed if you wait a little while, then try again. We'll try again for you for in about a day.

Updates downloaded and installed very quickly. Already back up and running. Nice!
Keep 'em coming, Palm. And PLEASE get the SDK out to developers before "end of Summer"!
I wish Palm had included PIN and remote wipe support for EAS in this update... oh well, hopefully next week
flawless update. took about 10 minutes from the start of the download. Seems snappier. App Catalog loads much faster than before...
it took about 5 minutes after the dl, and the dl over wifi wasnt that long.
i hope they also fixed the facebook sync.
why is it taking so long for "checking for updates..."
its been 5 mins
I feel like the apps and basically everything load up much quicker with this new update. Anyone else notice any difference?
Just downloaded and installed.
Would really love to know what the misc. updates are.
Heres the update history
http://kb.palm.com/wps/portal/kb/na/pre/p100eww/sprint/solutions/article...
when you open the updates app it not only checks the OS but it checks your 3rd party apps too.
Glad I could help the rest of my fellow pre users
Sorry the comment duplicated, Ilm writing both from the pre
Everything does seem to be loading faster !! :)
Just downloaded 1.03 over EVDO. So snappy! Only took about 50 seconds. Now installing and about 80% done after only a minute and a half or so. Love this phone! Love the updates! Makes you feel like you're getting taken care of.
By the way, just tried the iPhone 3GS and compared web browsing speed side-by-side with my Palm Pre. Same network, same website, Palm about 10 times faster than 3GS. Yes!
Gotta say the video cam and the trillions of apps were sorely missed, however. That WordFu game on the iPhone seems cool.
Really hope Palm gives developers core access to the device so that games can come alive. As much as Palm likes to say this is more of a business-y device, I don't think much has to be given up to let us businessmen loosen up our ties a little and play some games on our smartphone every now and then...
By the way, during the course of this e-mail, the install was completed!
I am @ a friends house... Verizon broadband used to download update through (pre's) wifi downloaded in like 4mins or less... Installed in even less time... And this first site I went to things seem lil faster nothing to dramatic tho....
I used my wi-fi access point at home and total from time I hit the update icon until it said it was ready to use was under 7 min. I hope all updates are this smooth.
No harm done, all my hacks still work including Universal Search. That's how you do an update!
Flawless update--took under 10 minutes from wifi download to installation.
I used to have a problem with trying to flick away cards where if I had part of my hand barely touching the bottom gesture area, it wouldn't recognize the flick and would instead select the card I just touched. (This probably is why the demo people always held it with their pinky supporting the bottom and their palm not touching the gesture area--I arrived at this solution independently and it works.)
I think it's now less sensitive to that--I can now hold the Pre in my actual palm as it was intended and now flick away cards.
I also hope the memory leaks that were preventing me from opening any cards at all have been fixed.
It's nice to see these updates rolling out. I look forward to getting a EuroPre! Should be few problems by the time it comes here if they keep going like this.
On Android there is no sync interval for contacts and calendar events with Gmail, it's all pushed. I wonder if it's because the Pre Gmail client uses IMAP IDLE, while Android uses long polling for any Gmail update.
I wonder what effect the change to syncing to Google every 15 minutes is going to have on battery life?
Just a question, were the Amazon and Youtube search always available in the music player? I played a song after reading the speaker volume was improved, and when I clicked the upper left tab i noticed, it gave me the option to search for the Artist.
I could have missed this before
Downloaded without WiFi and installed quickly. Classic and WiFi still work.
The device does seem an tiny bit snappier, but it's not so much so that I'll declare it fact and not just my wishing it to be the case. It could also just be because the phone was updated, not that the update, itself, did anything.
Still can't insert symbols into text fields on websites. Still can't option-scroll/highlight in all directions within text fields unless the text includes a line break. I'm not complaining, just noting.
Anyone notice any of the "Misc" changes? And sorry, Rockyjay, searching for Artists was already there.
Well, it took me about an hour of retrying the Update app to get the download - kept getting the "Unable to connect" error. Not sure if it made a difference but I switched from WiFi to EVDO and got on my 3rd try. It downloaded via EVDO in under 3 mins! It them installed with no issues in about 5 mins with no intervention needed from me.
Sadly, this update does not seem to have touched the one issue I care about which is the problem with cert based authentication for EAS. No improvement there dang it all.
Gnashing of the teeth and rending of the garments continues...
- Chris
i couldnt intall it since my battery was at less than 10% after 6 hours of light to moderate use. this one is going back soon. i cant get through till evening without 2 complete charges. hopefully update addresses some battery issues.
Here's one change: PDF View doesn't lock-up the entire device, just itself. I'm gonna see if cutting up the user manual into the individual chapters helps.
QUESTION (somewhat rhetorical),
Is it just me or is it a "very big coincidence" that Palm released this much anticipated PRE update on the very same day apple's 3G-S went on sale?
I'm starting to like the Palm guys more every day ;-P
Ok... don't get me wrong.. I love that they are sending an update so early in the game but... what's up w the weak updates... I mean stuff that i really need like now... for example... I'm sick of not being able to see my all day events in Month view on the Calander or what about the video cam feature. Or how about improving signal strength.. How long do we have to w8t to get features that are actually useful. I LOVE the pre... but I need it to work Properly in order to brag on it. [:-{D}
Not so sure about the waiting time frames, but spelling it as 'w8t' most likely makes the updates come even slower. :-D
PS: and why is the 't' at the end necessary in any case? ;P
good question... idk.. LOL... w8... i guess it just seems incomplete being so short. so... "W8T" it is and W8T it will be.. :-P
hehe...but.. ok... wouldn't w8 (or w8T) be "weight" rather than "wait"? I don't know...just sayin' ;-)
The nazi speller.
i love my pre
Well to say that I'm underwhelmed is an understatement. The biggest issue that Palm has with the PRE is battery and reception issues. Well update done and reception still as cr@ppy as ever. I'm giving them one more week. If not fixed it's sayonara PRE Hello GS. As much as I hate the Deathstar. My corp discount on their 450 plan will be under what I have to pay for same on Sprint.
PALM FIX THIS THING!!!!
seriously no one cares about your idle threats to return your pre!! neither does sprint or palm... your phone will be returned and resold to someone else so you will not make or break palm/sprint
You are right. Myself alone won't make piddle in their pond. I work in retail you don't want a consumer have a tarnished impression about your business. You never know who they know ect. Just from the amount of airaves they are giving out is not a good sign. Now I myself along with all the other people here that are having this issue. Are looking at the end of the month. Lots have already said screw it i'm outta here. Lots more are like myself that are willing to cut Palm some slack. With no ETA to a fix that end of the month is looking like an end for using the PRE. Come the second week in July will be real interesting. If this isn't fixed by then Sprint takes it on the chin and palm has some scrambling to do.
BTW an Idle threat is one that is never acted on. That won't happen here. I'm not locked in yet. I still have all the packaging in the sprint bag I took it out from.
Firstly, they're giving away AIRAVEs for free. Why would you complain about signal and say you're going to cancel instead of just getting their free solution? You are waiting for a DIFFERENT free solution? I'm getting my airave tomorrow...
Second, it's not like Sprint can just put up hundreds of towers overnight. If their signal is weak in your area, there's not a whole lot they can do right away.
Any other issues, they will deal with as soon as they can. I don't care if I pass my 30 days, this phone beats anything out there in enough ways for me to never look back.
what do you mean they are giving away free airaves??? My signal blows around here... Is it possible there is a solution to this?
Free Arave's appear to be a thing of the past. Rumor is that Sprint circulated a memo - no more freebie airaves.
I still can't open a word document linked from a website, that sucks. oh well, everything is fine.
This update for me was HUGE. The two things I really care about enough to return the phone (within the 30 days) are non-SSL EAS support and battery life. Now I am up and running like a dream with my work email with this fix. So, one issue down and one to go. I don't understand why people are so upset that they released this update without all of the fixes they want. Don't we want updates as often as possible? I would much rather update today and wait until next week for the battery fix than to wait until next week for both.
That is true but this is cold comfort for the people with real reception problems. It leaves a bad taste in the consumers mouth as to how serious Palm is to fixing serious issues. This can be seen as another nail in Palm/Sprints coffin to the full return of the PRE in less the 2 1/2 weeks.
I think the new 1.0.3 update did break the Classic app. Now when I open up Classic, it shows a "blue screen of death." it kind of remind me of the good old Windows 98 days...
I hope thry will workout an update soon.
Classic actually works better after the update for me. Today was the first time I was able to even load Bejeweled 2, let alone play it.
Classic crashes at least 10% of the time, anyway.
I downloaded my up date at subway on my lunch break with 2 bars of EVDO and it took like 7 mins and like 5 mins to install..... anyone notice any other improvements from this update???
i lost my chat logs that were listed under the messaging icon. it sucks. anyone else see this. was working before the update
Well I for one am not impressed with this recent update. I have not noticed any improvement with the device on any level. In fact, it appears to have the Pre running worst than before. I have just experienced two restarts after the web browser froze, this has never happened since I have owned this device.
I have read people saying that programs launch faster but I have had the opposite experience. My applications are launching much slower than before the update. I hope this is not the BIG update that Palm and Sprint are talking about as this just won't cut the mustard.
I share the same sentiment with a lot of other Pre owners, if they DO NOT rectify these issues before my thirty day trial I will definitely return this device and cancel my contract. As much I would like to give this device a fair shot, at this point in the game there are too mnay phone options availabke and on the horizon for a company that is struggling like Palm to release sub-par hardware and software, especially at these price points in this economy.
COME ON PALM, STEP UP YOUR GAME... I AM PULLING FOR YOU.

I found something new, there is now a progress bar underneath song (or in my case podcast) title. Which was killing me before. Anyone know how to continue where I left off in a podcast. If I exit a pod cast and go back it starts over like a song would... Which sucks cuz they are 30 mins long or more.
I don't think that's a new feature (the progress bar in the title) and I am also waiting for better podcast support. They need their own menu item in the music player and they need to be grouped by show. Basically it should be like the Zune. Resuming playback is also a must.
I'd really love to download this update but I have been getting the same "can't connect to server" error message for the last 7 hours. What gives? Ota downloads are nice but I'd take a download right about now
Yeah my fault... Its nott new, I just realized there are 2 screens in the player... Sigh....
Not only do my apps load faster and web pages render more quickly after this update... But I seem to be better looking and my friends like me more. I love my PRE!!
Other than that, no other improvements to report.
Update went smoothly - 7 minutes beginning to end. Without question pages load MUCH faster. My marginal data signal seems better and more stable. They sent me an Airave (free)so voice is no longer a problem in our marginal signal area.
Just a word about the endless griping. EVERYTHING about the Pre is "1.0" - the device, the OS... everything! If you wanted perfection first shot out of the box, you should have purchased a more mature device and OS.
Early adopters know - and some of us even enjoy - this part of the process. The pioneers always take some arrows, but that's part of the deal. Get over it!
I'm still having sync issues with Google Calendar. Interesting about the special characters affecting sync, I removed all of these from the appointments that weren't syncing and it fixed the problem. Bummer though, how are you supposed to write "John's house" without using an apostrophe?
the more i play with the phone and to stuff like take pictures the more i could go for some better photo stability in the camera feature. :-D PLEASE PALM.... PLEASE!!!! [:-{D}
I second what dsaltz said. I bought the Pre knowing full well that it wouldn't be perfect... yet.
If you having problems downloading the update, do a hard reset. Go to device info, reset options and do a full erase. Make sure you sync all your accounts, you may or may not lose your apps but i did not. Once you do a reset, you'll be able to download the update. Got this advice from a sprint tech Rep. It worked.
I just confirmed this; thanks for the info! I have been trying off & on since the update dropped yesterday, but all I got was the "Unable to connect. Try again later" message...very frustrating!
I tried the "Partial Erase", though instead of the "Full Erase" and it took care of the issue for me. Hope this helps for others!!
I do have to say, though, that Palm needs to perfect the backup utility...it's annoying to have to go back through and re-set all of my preferences & settings...
I was having problems updating like some of you too. It was constantly saying that I was "unable to connect" with every attempt I made. I did a little searching on other Palm Pre forums in where I found this solution that worked for me.
"Got this from the official Palm Pre forums
Ok, I finally got this Updates error figured out.
I was getting that message because my Palm Profile was showing up as unverified on the phone, even though I clicked through my verification e-mail when it was set up.
Here is how to check the status of your Palm Profile:
1. From the Launcher, go into “Backup”
2. Tap into Preferences in the top left hand corner
3. Tap into Palm Profile, enter Palm Profile Password, tap Done
If your Palm Profile is unverified it will say so here.
There is an option to resend the verification e-mail from the phone, but in my experience this does not work. I went back to the original e-mail I received the night I got my phone. I clicked through it again and to make sure that my Palm Profile showed “Profile Status: E-mail Verified"
After that, I did a manual back up before resetting my phone:
1. From the Launcher, go into “Backup”; tap "Back up now". Wait for it to complete.
2. From the Launcher, go into “Device Info”, scroll down and tap “Reset Options”
3. Tap “Partial Erase” - according to the description, this erases applications installed. I did not find this to be the case as all my applications were still intact afterwards, but any personal settings – such as changing wall papers or rearranged icons were set back to the default. Web Bookmarks that I added were deleted.
4. Phone will reboot, ask you to set up language, etc. Then it will ask about your Palm Profile. Choose to log in to your existing Palm Profile, and enter the e-mail address and password you verified earlier. This will restore your data.
After restoring the data, it will reboot one more time. After that if you check into the Palm Profile again on the phone, the unverified message is gone and now the Updates function works as it should."
Hope this helps some of you as it did for me. On a side note, I do hope that the reception is improved. According the Sprint Coverage Map on their website, I'm in an area that is marked green for "great" coverage. Although I do experience almost full bars most of the time, there are times that it's all the way down to just one bar and sometime switches over to "R" which I'm assuming is roaming. This is really bizarre to happen in an area that it suppose to be great in coverage. I'm giving Palm some slack though. I remember at least one or two updates on my iPhone that addressed improved signal strength reception. Palm should do this before the 30 days are up for us new Pre owners!!!
Yup, this worked for me too. Though I still had to call a Palm rep. Explanation below.
Its odd, since I was able to download 1.0.2 without issue (my pre was not preloaded with 1.0.2 out of the box, I needed to dl shortly after taking the Pre home).
I certainly hope this isn't an issue moving forward, though it seems this issue was isolated to a small percentage of folks.
FYI, I was only able to download the update via EVDO. The Palm rep stated that WiFi is not as stable/consistent of a connection, so I could only get the download to start after I turned off WiFi. Odd, but at least it worked.
The rep also stated that the update will indeed provide a boost to battery life as there were some optimizations made to the WebOS software (couldn't get him to spill the beans on specifics, though).
Thanx Brian!!!!!!! Your a Pre-God!!!!! LOL The whole process took less than 10 minutes!!! Thanx again. Max
I was one of the peopel that was getting only 3 hours out of a full charge prior to the .3 download. After the download I got 14 hours yesterday. My battery problems are gone! It appears that whatever was in that thing, was also a fix for a bug that was in some units. Way to go Palm!
For a launch of a brand new handset and OS, this has been very low on problems and you've been quick with fixes. Nice work.
Now get us spell check for email and an invite attendees function in calendar (EAS) and I'm all set!
I noticed that the screen dims during speaker-phone mode. I think I saw a forum user complaining about that a few days ago on a thread. Saying his two-year-old kept shutting the phone off in speaker phone because the screen wouldn't shut off. Well I can confirm that though I didn't test before, after 1.0.3 my screen turns off while in speaker phone.
