We're currently tracking all the undocumented improvements to webOS 1.1 on the Palm Pre in this forum thread, (and here too), the stuff not covered in the changelog. Well, I'm here to say that there are plenty:
- Changed sound for notifications - You still can't change them yourself, but the new sound is much richer, if a little quieter
- Animated drop down menus - they look really slick and really change the experience. The Context menus also have some nice animation.
Additional photo upload options - you can now upload a photo to either Facebook or Photobucket(not new - thanks commenters!)- Lots of Photo app improvements. A more distinct bar between all photos and your albums in the photo app, plus they're calling the Screenshot album "Screen Captures." The preview thumbs also slide in from the right. Faster photo rendering. Overall the Photos app feels much more fully baked.
- Emailing Memos - The memo app now has a menu option to email a memo.
- A new font for the Browser - uses Palm's system font and, truly, it looks fantastic.
- Disabled the key combo in browser to open in a new card. Boo-urns.
- Javascript interpreter Performance upgrades - this will speed up virtually everything and is great news
- Sporadic reports of speed improvements both in the browser and system-wide, but it's always tough to know if these are real or just perceived
- Seems to have better Gmail handling - not failing when you tap on a notification for an email you'd already archived on the desktop
- A new icon for AIM
- more more more! If you find some, post in this thread and we'll update this list as they come in.
- More auto-complete / auto correct entries in the dictionary.
- With the slider open, the Center button now turns on the screen, where as before you had to hit a keyboard key or the power button.
- It's a little finicky, but you can double-tap to start text selection in editable fields (note, however, that cursor placement in the Memos app is buggy)
Although a lot of homebrewers are going to need to re-patch a lot of stuff (Check this thread for a list of homebrew busts), the homebrew tethering solution still appears to work. We're also tracking webOS 1.1 bugs in this thread.
Of course, the wish-list of stuff that wasn't added is still a mile long, but hey, we're at 1.1 less than 2 months after launch - this is tasty stuff, Palm. Keep 'em coming.

This is correct. I've just checked this (still running 1.0.4 for the next few minutes) and photobucket is there.
From the photo app menu, tap Preferences & Accounts > Add An Account and your options are Facebook and Photobucket.
I could upload to photobucket since I got my pre a few weeks ago

When you put a D.Y.I smiley face :-) the phone then automatically changes it to a yellow real smiley face when you send it
I've been able to use happy :-), sad :-(, perplexed :-/, wink :-), mad :-@, and a kiss :-*, but so far haven't seen any other emoticons that work......... Anyone else know of a list that gives emoticon text arrangements????

As others have mentioned, Photobucket integration isn't really new.
I will say that I've noticed a few apps loading considerably faster, and the search is really quick now, where it wasn't before.
Photobucket upload has been there since day 1!
I can say that the browser has had a parsing upgrade. Before lists.zenbe.com (an iphone list taking program) used to display a blank page. Now the web page works beautifully and I am once again able to update my iphones couterpart lists using the the zenbe web gateway on my palm pre!
Gmail webapp buttons still don't work?! No delete, can't return to folders, etc. It's crippling for a Gmail user and nobody seems to be talking about it.
Gmail webapp? Why use a mail webapp, when the webos mail app pushes Gmail!
I hadn't noticed the folder navigation not working, but all the action buttons do work, they just redirect you to a blank page. After hitting refresh it appears your action was performed. I agree nonetheless-annoying.
And I use the gmail webapp because I prefer reading my emails as conversations. Wish they would add that funcionality to the email app.
Note: Under Device info, Sprint has been upgraded to 1.7, indicating hidden improvements with the phone service itself. ;)
That's not an indication of anything. Blackberry does this all the time to apps without making any real changes. Not assuming there aren't any changes, but not assuming there are either. A change in version number does not always equal upgrade. It may just be the version number has to change to coincide with Palm's webOS update history for the Pre. Neither Palm nor Sprint issued a statement proclaiming a change in the phone service. Don't assume sh*t.

How about the ability to add a contact to the launcher I don't rememeber seeing that. From with in a contact do drop down menu and you will see add to launcher
What is this usefull for, I thought I would be able to click once and dial but it just brought up the contact from the luancher.

In 1.0.4 were we able to add a song as a ringtone for the phone?, as it is now possible. Maybe I did not check that earlier.
they still need to fix how we can hangup a one of the lines on a conference call and fix the Pin Lock and put the emergency button somewhere else or actually let the pre confirm that we are calling 911

Yes, please can we find a fix for that. I'll get on a conference call and wind up having to hang up on both just to call one of them back. It's just a little thing, though. If they find a way to fix it, that will be great.
I already called 911 dozen time by mistake.. that bring my life time 911 call to dozen :-)
The youtube app's search bar remains @ the top of the screen no matter how far down you scroll
How about adding contact save from navigation. There is no need to look up and address if I cant save it to my contacts. Its a time kill to always open navigation to a number I should be able to save once I search it.
I looked everywhere and can't find them. Maybe on the next update.
It would also be nice to save a searched placee or business to your contacts when you look it up though Google Maps as you could with the Treo.

I don't know about notifications, but messaging notification sound is different, or is it just me..
Have someone send you somethig with an :) in it. Shows up as an emoticon now rather than punctuation.
When the slider is open, you can now wake the screen by pressing the center button. Still doesn't work if slider is closed, though...
That is cool...I wish you could set it for always working tho!

The icons have been there from launch. You have always been able to add yahoo mail(though it never seems to work right and keeps giving error messages about the password). There is still not support for any other IM other than gtalk and AIM.
To add the AIM or Gtalk
1. open the message app
2. tap on messaging in the upper left hand corner
3. tap on preferences & accounts
4. tap on add account on the bottom.
Please Please Please Palm Yahoo, MSN and skype IM support. AIM still sucks and unlike gtalk, I've been using Yahoo for 10 years and have a bunch more contacts.

I just hit the Sprint icon and it took me to the Sprint Web home page!! This is like web for the dumbphones on Sprint but it has a lot of useful stuff. Go take a look

After I updated (and installed and rebooted), it changed my system sound effects volume to zero. I turned it back up to max volume (and verified it makes the notification sound again when put on the touchstone). Yet, there was still no sound effects when throwing away cards. So I rebooted it. Makes no difference, still no card or launcher sound effects. Then the vibrate switch and the ring volume buttons stopped working!
thats funny, because mine actually works now. If I wanted to change any notification volume before I had to change and reboot for it to change the volume, now when I slide and release it lets me know how loud it is and no reboot necessary. Sorry for your bad luck...wierd stuff I tell you.
Hah I thought that was only me that had to reboot to change system sound settings. I haven't tried it yet I hope that is fixed. I could easily move the slider to change ringer volume or use the side buttons, but system volume never changed unless I rebooted. That was kind of annoying for me.
I dont know about yours, but I can verify my card sound effects still work.
I finally got it fixed. Multiple reboots- nothing. I finally took the battery out and everything back to "normal". Now THAT is strange..... I mean, if the phone is *OFF* (rebooted), I don't see how removing the battery makes any difference.
These devices can never really be turned off. The "power" switch is not a power switch at all. It's a momentary switch, the state of which must be polled by the cpu in order to check its state, thus the phone is always "on" to some extent in order to leave the code running that checks the state of that momentary switch. As such there's certain parts of the phone that probably never get truly reset unless you remove the battery.
Lord... they opened up the analog clock in the clock app. Go into the clock, go to the pull down menu, and select themes... BANG FUN

When I hook my Pre into my computer and select "Media Sync" to try and sync iTunes...it for some reasons does not show up on my iTunes. There's not even a devices section on my iTunes. Help?

Try turning off your Pre and pulling the battery. Sounds like you have a background process that's stuck.
BATTERY LIFE: What the hell? I had fantastic battery life before this update. My phone would charge super fast and stay at 100% for like 3 hours with moderate use. Now, the battery is taking forever to charge, the phone is super hot and the battery just went from 91% to 75% in like 20 mins and barely any use? What is going on ???
Try turning off your Pre and pulling the battery. Sounds like you have a background process that's stuck.
I don't think this is your problem, but i had turned off roaming to save battery life (spend a lot of my day on edge of reception) and the 1.1 update turned roaming back on. (the setting is in the phone prefs.)
I don't know if this new but if you are viewing pages on the web in landscape mode and you swipe the gesture area it scrolls the page up and down.
That was alteady there before update.
That's strange because I remeber trying to do that before the update and I remember it not working, could be just me.
Its been there at least since 1.04, In fact I was using the scrolling method last night, (in gesture area)

My batt is so much better now I had to keep it on the chrg when jus going to this site for like 20 min in the past, and it would go down at least 30% now I been on and off this site for like 4 hours after my update and it only used about 15 I'm at 75% and I have been multi tasking and checking all my new stuff. And yay its fast for me....... : ) king trot hit me on the where wall ppl.....
My batt is so much better now I had to keep it on the chrg when jus going to this site for like 20 min in the past, and it would go down at least 30% now I been on and off this site for like 4 hours after my update and it only used about 15 I'm at 75% and I have been multi tasking and checking all my new stuff. I new feature I like is the ability to enter an IP address for a imap/pop email server. Before, it had to be a registered domain name. Now I can sync up with my work email.
Better Browsing. For example, B of A mobile site is faster, smoother, and the phone finally formats the transaction logs correctly!

As for this patch, I know alot of you are thrilled, but I give it 2 stars " ** "... So many implementations I was hoping for didnt make it. Of course obviously there will be more updates, but still. It seemed more like a quick-patch versus addressing the top 5 things I see listed over and over again.

Also added "Due" option to the view list on the Tasks app. This is really helpful! Now you can only see the tasks that are currently due.

it isnt integrated onto the phone yet, but if you go to just facebook.com you can see the chat bar and use it. so it works on the web.
You can set MP3's as ringers!

you can already use facebook chat if you use the regular web browser and just go to www.facebook.com instead of x.facebook.com. i was browsing facebook the other day and the messenger popped up and all i had to do was zoom into it. COOLEST FEATURE EVER. NONE of my friends can facebook chat on their phones :D

Go to task app, open task details, and select one of the three settings to change (priority, list, or due). The menu smoothly expands outward then shrinks back in after you choose something.
In the Memos app, Double-tap selects a word while triple-tap selects a whole paragraph. And get this, double tap/hold and drag selects text from that point up or down. If you drag your finger to the edge of the screen it will start to select text in that diection, just as you'd expect. Triple tap does the same thing for, you guessed it, paragraphs.
Also, in the Memos app and beyond we are now able to option/scroll and shift/select up and down as well as left and right. Previously, you could only do that if your text had a line break in it somewhere.
I concur. I found double tap and triple also work in any other app where you can select a lot of text like (email) also the selecting of text the traditional way with shift is much smoother. Also if you hold shift or do the double tap technique and bring down to gesture area it will continue to scroll down selecting all the text on the way.
Seriously, selecting text is far and away the best feature of this update. Second to the option of using the center button when the slider is open to turn the phone on.
Still looking for more updates from Palm in the future because there is still a lot to fix but the above two options are effing awesome!
This double-tap to select has always been there. I've been using it for a while before 1.1.0 came out. I twittered about it from @chimerico to @PalmPreTips 6/30/09.

The browser is so quick now. I checked a few of my more comonly visited sites and it loaded up FAST. almost as fast my my desktop browser.
i like the new sound notification. I dont really care so much for the NFL live addition but nice for all the fans.

ROAM ONLY HACK is GONE!!! has someone tried redoing this? This sucks! this is the only thing that has been keping me afloat @ work where I get little or no sprint service!

Were we able to delete emails by flicking them off the main email screen like a notification, before the update. This is much easier than opening each individual email and hitting the trash button.

The phone app is much improved. Calls actually can be answered quickly, rather than having to wait for the phone to keep on ringing. A HUGE improvement.

Really?? Yeah, No. It looks like crap. Too small in portrait mode. Maybe ok for folks with great eyes but the previous font was much more readable in portrait mode.
If we're gonna stick with that, at least give me the ability to choose a small, medium or large size as the standard font.

It would be nice if the Devs would but the Emoticons within the symbol pull down menu. The same two smilies are there, I'm not going to remember all of those lol.
All of the emoticons are in the help menu. They don't send to some other phones. My friend only got :) for smiley face. Oh well.

Palm also fixed the Pause/Play music headphone interface bug. In the past, if the Pre went into the power save mode you could only Pause music via the headphone button, but couldn't Play music. One had to press the Power button (irrelevant if it's still locked), and then music could be Played via the headphone button. After the update, the power state of the Pre is irrelevant if you wish to Play/Pause music via the headphone button interface.
I have been unlucky with phones for a while (and that includes the pre) ... it was the pre'cious to me until it started heating up on my first call (got a swap but that was the same) ... so, finally returned it. just wondering if anyone else had the same problem? (there was a woman at the sprint store also who had the same trouble).
Anyway, palm can actually eliminate the LAUNCHER from the QUICKLAUNCH because you can actually get to that by swiping up from the GESTURE AREA to the SCREEN above. And to close it, just swipe down or press the center button. That way, we can have one more on the Quicklaunch.
I don't know if this was possible before 1.1, but you can swipe up from the gesture area to minimize a card.
Yup, since day 1. I literally never use the center button.
The Sprint Nav app has a fix, though the version is unchanged. You can now properly get back to the home screen after starting navigation. Previously there was a bug causing the two methods which perform this to not function, now it works just fine.
This is going to save me a lot of closing and opening of the nav app. I'm really stoked about this.
You still can't set it to avoid toll roads though. =/
Not only that, the icons in Sprint Nav look much fresher as well. Also, when you're searching for a name of a business, it brings up suggestions based on the letters you type, this works under Drive-To then address search as well. When you search by City, any letter you type brings up suggestions.
The greatest benefit of Facebook is that it has many groups on the site that you can join. So if you are interested in Chicago Cubs you can research Chicago Cubs in the groups section and you will be able to find friends on there that like the Cubs. This is just one example, I know that you can join groups of your favorite football team, television show, or whatever you want for the most part! If you can't find a group for your interest, you can simply create one!

I haven't seen anything on my Pre regarding OS 1.1, not even a notice about it being available for future down load, and I am fully charged and on line.
Go to launcher, hit 'Updates'.
The new update's pretty good..only complaint I have is the sound notifications..I wish ringtones cud be used for txt messages..bt I'm guessin this means tht the next update will feature it..thanx palm!

Has anyone noticed this, but when I was making changed to one of my email accounts, I did the back swipe gesture and got confirmation that my changes were made. This was the first time I noticed that after the update.
