Move quickly, because this deal expires on Monday, September 28th. Wal-Mart Wireless (formerly known as LetsTalk) has decided to slash $100 off the price of the Palm Pre, dropping it down to a mere $79.99. Why they’re still charging $179.99 regularly is a mystery to us. But forking over $80 to Wal-Mart won’t just get you a Pre on Sprint, it’ll also net you a free accessory kit, which includes a car charger, screen protector, clear case, and a bluetooth headset. The bundle is valued at $34.99, so we wouldn’t expect anything of good quality out of it, in fact it may all stink, but if its included at no extra cost, why not?
Thanks to Sharon for the tip!

haha
"it may all stick"
And possibly suck, too?
Wouldn't that be "stuck"? I think he meant "stink", but who knows?
What in the world kind of bluetooth headset could be included in a 34.99 bundle?
Anyone get a look at this?
Wow that must be a terrible headset if the bundle is valued at $34.99. Discontinued headset perhaps?
I strongly suggest you buying from Amazon rather than Walmart/Letstalk. Read their return/exchange policy. Its just horrible.
I bought the phone from letstalk on August. The phone wasn't functioning properly. So I had to return/exchange it. I called them (there is about 30mins wait) and they said according to their policy, I have to ship it back. They won't pay for it. So, I ended up shipping the phone back. I didn't see any status update for about 4 days. Apparently, it takes them about 48hrs to check whether everything is returned properly and create a new order. After that, they take their own sweet time to ship it back. Only new orders have priority and ship within a day. My order was lying there for a week. Everytime I called (oh, 30 min wait time), they would just say, we can't guarantee anything, it will ship only when its ready. After 2 weeks, I got fed up and cancelled the order.
I went to Sprint store and picked up the phone from there. Trust me, the experience was horrible.
Lots of discounting and price cuts lately. This often starts to happen to clear out inventory before a new model comes out. Could be we're going to see a new Pre in 30 to 60 days, perhaps with more memory, new features, etc.
That is highly improbable.
Agreed. The Pre is no where near the end of a now-typical one year life cycle yet.
But I do have to wonder what the price cuts are all about. Just trying to move some more units before the Pixi comes? But that doesn't even make sense.
Sadly you need to buy the phone with a sprint plan of $70 or more. So if you're like me, on a family plan, this won't work out for you. I already called sprint and they said they would not match or even lower there price. Bummer
the Pre is dying a slow and painful death....
little over 3 months and it is already under $100....
i do not recall a Blackberry or WM device being slashed so quickly. (nevermind an iPhone)
I disagree. Even at 79 there is still quite a bit of profit to be made. You would drop the price because of competition, not because the device is a failure. Lots of places to get pres these days...
yeah i had tmobile and they slash prices on everything but the G1 all the time. they are just recently started dropping that one. but blackberrys dropped in price all the time.
Well... I can honestly say I will never ever do the early adopter thing again.
Ever bought a car new? Or a computer at all?
Oh, just wait until you have the opportunity again--it may be too hard to resist even the second time around!
Well that's just peachy. I payed 200 bucks whereas if I waited I'd have saved $120 AND got free stuff. New phones stink.
I'd be extremely wary to purchase a phone from Wally World...the above user's experience doesn't at all surprise me...although I am kind of ticked that I just paid 250 up front with a 100 dollar mail in rebate at my local sprint store...at least I get service that I know and can trust...
I bought my Pre soon after its release and still LOVE it! Sorry for those who don't, I use it all day long but maybe my expectations aren't has high. I find myself using my iPod Touch less and less as the Pre gains programs that allow it to do more and more. Will be buying another one in February for my wife when her phone is eligible for the upgrade pricing. Unless she likes the Pixi better. Either way, no regrets switching from WM and she'll be switching from BB. Best of luck to those searching for the 'perfect' phone.
I have to agree with the comment regarding the amount of price discounts available for the Pre, there has to be a reason for its prevalence. Almost daily you hear of even better or equal discounts.
So why?
I am a Pre fan and would like to believe that it is due to the possibility of a new Pre model. I highly doubt 800,000+ devices sold so far is a weak showing.
So let the rumours start!
I'd like to promote the rumour that there will be an SD card slot and lots more onboard memory and improved (more reliable) hardware (i.e. less Oreo's)
To add fuel to the fire ....It's strange how a few of the UK web sites in the early days (several months before the Pre GSM was even confirmed) offered the Pre with an SD slot. ;-)
I would do it again. One of the coolest things about this phone is watching and playing a(very small)roll in it's evolution. I have beta tested Windows since XP, however MS doesn't listen to the people. Palm has, and I love them for it!
I agree. I think that this indicates a model change. 16gb or even 32 gb pre anyone? I would say that to continue the competition with i-stupid they will need to up the storage. Not to mention that the lower end pixi has the same storage..
Well, this pushed me over the edge! Seems like precentral will be my new hangout for the next 2 years! :)
Everyone: Thanks for your comments, helped a lot while I'm once again searching for a smartphone.
vijayd: I understand...feel the frustration. Been in that situation myself with other companies. What a real headache!
bcollins...: Scary (about Sprint's unwillingness, exact reason I'm very skeptical about dealing with Sprint)!
blackmagic: thanks for the uptic on BB! nice to know!
gaberael: thanks for the well wishes on finding a good smartphone! But the search is difficult: so much info - and then deciding which is reliable, most capable, and affordable? My head (and eyes) hurt!
Again, thanks! (not a Pre owner, yet, but 'Maybe' soon.
I'm not sure how to say this without coming off like a snob or anything but...
I was in your boat for the last few months, searching for a good, reliable smartphone with plenty of (working) features/apps that weren't buggy, unfinished or a waste of my time...I played with countless smartphones; HTCs (Android & Windows Mobile), BBs, iPhones, etc...
In terms of ease of use, intuitive design and work flow, compatibility with planners/calenders, application support, community support, and basically any other point of importance for a smartphone, the Pre has completely and utterly exceeded my expectations. That said, I've never owned a smartphone before so I suppose my expectations might have been lower than some, however I feel this is probably a mute point as the Pre has easily outperformed any other phone I tested out in regards to those characteristics I mention previously.
As far as affordability, I'd simply read the latest post on the front page of this website and that should settle that matter for you...
I would implore you to visit the nearest Sprint store and play around with the display model...show me another phone that is comparable in quality, aesthetic appeal, functionality and more fun to use for 99 bucks and 69.99 a month for unlimited data, mobile to mobile (yeah, ANY service provider...you've seen the new commercials) and messaging...
I genuinely appreciate your sentiment. I'm still blowing in the wind waiting for my 2 year with Sprint to come up and save me some money, so I've been looking as the day draws near.
Yet I'd disagree on some points with the Pre as someone who's been living in smartphone land for a while. For all the reasons you described, I love smartphones. I've been in WinMo land as a result. Nothing met all of those needs, but where I decided to compromise led me here.
Now the Pre truly covers more ground with just about everything, but it's still missing many minor things that the older folks have already worked out. Fair enough since it's new, I know.
With regards to build quality though, I just had a crushing experience in my awe for the Pre. I've been playing with every smartphone display model I pass as I try to decide on my next greatest. And this weekend I was in a more popular shopping district, so I swung through the Sprint store.
One of the two Pre there was absolutely destroyed. Granted, people abused it, but the Oreo effect on it was bad, there were three sizable chips taken out of the edges and a nasty crack getting toward the screen. The chips I attribute to the sharp, small, plastic corners, which is a fundamentally bad idea for anything that might be abused. It's something I'd never thought about with the Pre.
To boot, this was the first day I had played with an iPhone and the Pre on the same day. Now I don't like (read "hate") Apple and AT&T, but I respect the hell out of the iPhone. I noticed the screen responsiveness and quirkiness on the Pre was horrible in comparison: Mistaking taps for short scrolls, just-noticeably less accurate, not recognizing some taps or double taps. Again, I hadn't realized how bad this was on the Pre before. But even my resistive WinMo phone is more accurate (though requires slightly more aggressive clicks).
So while I agree entirely with regards to WebOS showing the greatest potential and even the strongest start of all the fantastic options out there, I can understand one still having reservations today. (Sorry so long winded.)
dont forget if you used code "25RAFPCVER1" $25 off making it 54.99
I'm sure that pretty much kills anyone's argument over the price of the phone. Its like a Pre revolution, I look forward to seeing tons of pre's around. Which in turn influences WebOS and app development. Win Win for WebOS.
