Verizon to Also Pick Up Pre After Sprint Exclusivity

Looks like you can put Verizon next to AT&T in the "We don't want the Pre launch on Sprint to be too successful so we're going to tell everybody we're getting it on our network too" camp.  So says Verizon executive Lowell McAdam:

"Over the next six months or so you will see devices like Palm Pre and a second generation Storm," on the Verizon Wireless networks McAdam said.

Now technically "device like" doesn't necessarily mean they're getting the Pre for sure, but we're putting this in the likely camp.  We're also very excited to see Palm make a triumphant return onto Verizon's network.  Relations between the two have been fairly chilly of late.

We could also spend some time reading into the "six months or so" bit as a sign that Sprint's exclusivity is the industry-standard 6 months, but it's a little too early in the game to assume that.

Thanks to everybody that sent this in!

Maybe when Lowell McAdam stated they will get devices like the palm pre he means the Palm Eos?

Sprint if your listening your really screwing this launch up!!! Just hope you don't lose anymore customers.

How is Sprint screwing it up? It's AT&T and Verizon that have screwed things up for Sprint...

I have a few reasons 1)Couple days before IPhone possible release 2)Shortage of phones 3)Constant changing of Pre launch 4) Sprint employees don't know what going on. Do you need me to continue?

1) If anything, that's a bold move. By hiding as much as they are they're probably hoping to catch Apple by surprise. It's probably also a bid to have as many Pre phones on supply for launch day.

2) If there's a problem with supply, that's not Sprint's fault. It's Palm and/or the manufacturer.

3) Constant changing? I don't recall any changes apart from the transition from First Half of 2009 to June 6th. Every other date was rumor and supposition.

4) It's not Sprint's fault that their employees are speculating on stuff they weren't supposed to know yet.

They phone is being release like next week! How would they not know something by now? I called a few stores already this morning and afternoon and they thought they had a idea, now no clue what is going on. One store manger told me to call her next Friday and that should be Sprint final launch plan...meaning they couldn't change since the next day the is the Launch!! She didn't even know how to scdeule her employee's for next week.

xray, take Pamprin for your PreMenstrual problems.
1) It's two days before the show starts. And Apple may not announce that day, it could be much later. And it will likely be an announcement of intention, not a "release" of physical product. And frankly, Pre is revolutionary, why should Palm run and hide within mommies skirt? When 3.0 gets its press, its sure to mention the new challenger and draw some comparisons, perhaps to Palm's benefit. I wont pronounce the timing as brilliant, but it's starting to look that way.

2) Yes, shortage, nobody can get one so far. I remember the iPhone shortages too. Oddly, UPS was delivering every hour all weekend, even on Sundays, and they never quite ran out for more than a few minutes. If Palm does have shortage, don't forget, some twits wanted the phone released before they had made the first production piece or tested it. How long do you want them to stack up the inventory? And, whats wrong with shortages? Free publicity that builds hunger for the buyers. You afraid the Jones get one before you? Go buy an iPhone.

3) They never changed the schedule, if anything, they might be early. Palms not repsonsible people tripping over faked Sprint documents, wild ass guessing and jokes. How many night have you already spent in front of your local sprint store? Sucka!

4) Since when did any retail employee know anything more than when their next break or off-day was? Especially under the shroud of secrecy Palm and Sprint have maintained. They're making minimum wage and they wear a name tag and most of them did not sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Y couldn't Sprint be the only ones with this phone and have AT&T or Verizon have another webOS phone.

Here we go again, more FUD. The Pre would be so crippled on Verizon it's not even funny. People... THINK, these rumors are designed to keep Verizon and ATT customers from switching. Don't you find it strange that none of this is coming from Palm? No one knows what the exclusive period is with Sprint, it's all speculation.

Good for palm bad for sprint... I still think alot of this is just propaganda.

This is good news for Palm and all Pre owners because it will increase the Pre user base. Think how many more iPhones Apple would have sold if it was available on Sprint and Verizon. As to Sprint, they've known all along that their exclusive deal with the Pre was temporary.

verizon wont get this for at least a year for two reasons:

1) Verizon will need time to dumb the phone. Remove any navigation abilities, lock down everything, make it 4gb instead of 8, and cap teh processor at a set rate. (maybe not exactly but something along those lines)

2) The Pre wont pass verizons great testing process. Which means changes and updates. This will take time. The storms updated OS keeps failing verizons testing procedures.

This is most likely big talk from red to try and get some spotlight for a device that wont be moved to their network unaltered.

Back in Jan Palm was asked why they chose Sprint, Palm said they wanted a company that would allow a 100% open platform. Sprint did not think twice. The reasons you gave alone are enough to conclude that Verizon will not be getting the Pre at anytime. There are just too many features on the Pre that Verizon will not allow.

Also you can bet that verizon would want to force a limit on what apps are avail to verizon pre owners.

Why would they allow Amazon MP3 Downloads or Pandora. They want to push VCast.

I am sure you could get any of these unofficially but how many people will spend the time, maybe 5% of the actual user base.

As much as I want AT&T and Verizon to take on the PRE, I want them to wait. Both of them have realized that the PRE is the next big thing to come along since the iPhone and they want to get on board. Well, it's Sprint's turn to share in the spot light for a change. I hope Sprint, at least, keeps the exclusivity for an year or two.

FU*** Verizon!!!!!!!

THE KEY WORD IS >>>> LIKE <<<< THE PALM PRE NOT THE PALM PRE THIS IS NOT TRUE SO DNT GET EXCITED >>>> LIKE<<<< NOT THE PRE

Bingo, they could get the Eos, or they could get the Pre while Sprint enjoys exclusive access to Pre 2.

I'm switching from Verizon because I'm tired of a) VZN never releasing good pones and b) when they have a good phone like the Touch Pro, they screw it up with less memory, slower processor .. do I even have to mention the screwed up keyboard? I mean really, who puts an up arrow between the N and M keys??? Besides, by the time VZN releases the Pre, if at all, the Pre 2 will be out.

Rubinstein was asked about this today, here are his comments:

"On to the Q&A: When will there be a GSM version. Palm expects to have one at some point in the future. What about the Verizon deal, asks Walt, noting this morning’s Verizon story this morning. Rubinstein says he can’t comment. We do love Sprint and they are our exclusive launch partner,” Rubinstein said. “It sounds like AT&T and Verizon both want it.. I can’t comment on unannounced relationships.” He notes that BellMo will distribute the Pre in Canada."

As some have said, Canada is next to get the Pre, neither Verizon nor ATT have really said they're getting the Pre, the folks writing the articles assumed that. I think Verizon and ATT chose their words carefully, for obvious reasons.
