Forum member bommarkm has just noticed that Sprint has updated their website to now show the Palm Pre's specs.
These specs are on Palm's website, but haven't been on Sprint's site until now, so let's hope that this is a sign that the Pre will be released soon. Goodness knows we've been biting our nails and wondering when we'll actually get our anxious hands on a Pre.
We DO have some new information to share with you though:
7.4GB will actually be available from the 8GB included, possibly implying the size of the OS is somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 megs or so (though it's still unclear what the relationship between the 8GB of storage and RAM will be, and whether or not the Pre will use Program Memory RAM/Storage ROM/Mass Storage like Windows Mobile or have a simpler RAM/Storage setup like other phones).
Also, MMS is CONFIRMED. So is Phone-as-modem via bluetooth or USB tethering. Yes!!

Comments
If the OS is being used up by the 8gb, then it would be using 500mb or so, not fifty. =]
But the 7.4gb usuable cap isn't going to make the MicroSD crowd too happy...
Lets not start that debating that again!
There is also formatting which may be eating a good bit of that space. IIRC my 8GB SD card formatted to have ~7600 MB under FAT32.
This new information was also available at Palm.com as well.
Right, under the details section.
Drop this joint already jeez. Im tired of using these winmo software and these cheap HTC phones. On Nation.
I want!
did anyone notice the line on the Sprint.com website which states, "Phone offer: While supplies last. Requires activation on an Everything Plan with data."
Define "Phone Offer"
Yup, it looks like an Everything plan is required as speculated. But note that it's AN Everything plan with data, not Simply Everything. I can still get the $69.99 version as planned.
I am just hoping I can sweet talk them into letting buy this and not changing my plan. it worked with my diamond.
I called Sprint right after the Pre was announced to see if it would work on my SERO plan, and the rep told me that would be fine. I'm hoping that doesn't change, else my bill will more than double!
In my opinion this is proof the Pre will be launching soon, not May, June or July. IF not, then Sprint is teasing the "EF" out of us!
Forget Hollywood. Palm's got the suspense thriller of the year, going on right here!
Just as I begin to get parched, they drop another lil tidbit and make my mouth water, all over again.
Somebody's been paying attention.
I think that in this increasingly ADD world, palm better strike while the iron is hot. People want the phone, release it before someone else counters and steals momentum away.
For me, momentum is already shifting.
The MWC rumors are coming out and I think the Pre will loose a lot of it's luster when the rumors and leaks are confirmed.
I'm already looking at the ACME, TG01, Archos and others.
1GB = 1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.
Just grabbed that little tidbit from the footnotes on the iPhone tech specs.
Point: People who've been using both the 8GB and the 16GB iPhones don't have a full 8GB or 16GB.
Point 2: At least Sprint and Palm are being upfront with how much space is on the device.
Now, about the approx 7.4GB...that's probably including stuff like Sprint Navigation, Sprint TV, and so forth. Remember there are some bits of carrier software on phones as well as the phone operating system. Still enough space for me.
As for the plan...I expected an everything data plan simply because of the way the webOS works...but check this. I was looking at the tiny fine print closer and....sure doesn't say anything about an Everything plan. Because I have that type of time I copied it word for word:
"1.Within wireless coverage area only. 2.Requires data services at additional cost. Microsoft Direct Push Technology requires Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 with SP2 or Exchange Server 2007. Additional fees may apply. 3. GPS requires data services at additional cost. Coverage not available in all areas at times. 4.Wi-Fi within range of 802.11b/g Wi-Fi network. Some Wi-Fi hotspots require fee for usage. 5.Sold separately."
Requires data services at additional cost implies that as long as you have a plan with unlimited data you'll be fine...but still, bank on an Everything Data plan.
Now...finally...to quote that lovable little lolcat: I can haz Pre now?
My mistake...didn't scroll down far enough to see the Everything Data plan requirement.
How is bluetooth "so 90's"???
Bluetooth and USB tethering...? That's so 90s... How about Wi-Fi tethering...? Just let the Pre to be a Wi-Fi access point.
Does anyone know if SERO is considered an "Everything Plan?". I too called sprint CS when pre was announced and the guy said i would be able to get the pre with the SERO plan but i just want to tie any loose ends so i don't have to get excited over this phone in vein.
The natives are restless.
Maybe it IS a Feb 15 release. Time's running out on the "ooh" window.
If it is a Feb 15 release you're going to have a lot of unprepared tech support and customer service reps at Sprint. And then I'll also be upset because I won't be able to have one on launch...and which would you rather have calling in on a new device: someone who doesn't have the foggiest idea what to do...or someone who learns UI quickly who has the same phone?
I don't understand what the big hype is about. The Pre is garbage. It will never see the light of day as long as Apple is around to protect their patents. So, either way the iPhone will remain the best phone ever made.
If the Iphone will remain the best phone ever made I feel sorry for the world. It is so lacking! And the minute the PRE is released the Iphone is no longer KING, even with its Apps store and Itunes. It simply is not a good phone.
Can't wait for the PRE!
I hope one of the patents that Palm has is on smart phones. If so, they will utilize it and tell Apple (and only Apple) to stop making the iPhone. Now, wouldn't that be a kick in the nuts!!! RIP Apple!
@Shill, Crawl back in your iHole.
@Cill Sadly for your Apple thumping you forget that ALL of the call handling on the iPhone violates Palm patents. Go back to your Apple Grove and crawl back in your iCave. If Apple was going to launch a lawsuit they would have done it by now. Leave those of us who don't think an elitist status symbol is a good phone alone iTroll.
Some confusion in these comments (not the article) about capacity. The Pre, like every other computer, thinks there's 1024 bytes in a KB, 1024 KB in a MB, 1024 MB in a GB.
8,000,000,000/(1024*1024*1024*) = 7.45
That's why the article suggests 50 Mbytes for OS: 7.45 - 7.4 = 0.05 GB (= 50 MB). Actually, since the 7.4 figure is only to one decimal place (and probably the result of rounding up or down) I think <100 MB is a better way of putting it.
ya beat me to it...folks often forget that 8gb is NOT a rounded number with zeros on it.
Ah, but you're comparing apples with oranges. You need to compare:
8,000,000,000/(1024*1024*1024*) = 7.45 with
7,400,000,000/(1024*1024*1024*) = 6.89
The difference is .56GB (over 500 MB). Yes it's a lot, but the Linux OS needs some space even for a minimal install, doesn't it?
So how many people think that the devs of "ifart" like apps will be for the pre? Think about how much stupid apps you could write! It will be glorious!
I seriously hope not. I would hope people will be more mature than that...unfortunately the realist in me knows that there are some people who will agree with you.
Sprint is going to push this phone and make a point regarding how its better than the iPhone.
From Pre page on Sprint:
As a dedicated iPhone user, I experienced something very strange and quite unexpected while watching Palm demo the new OS: my iPhone suddenly felt old and played out. It's like Palm started with the iPhone, copied all the best ideas, and then made the whole package better.
Jon Stokes - Ars Technica
In short, there's no other phone like this on the planet!
For me, I really don't care if its better or if its an iPhone killer, I just want it be successful and a true competitor to the iPhone. Competition is always good. Just imagine what either one of these companies (for that matter, other mobile phone makers) will come out next year and year after.
A good example of non-competition, is the iPhone itself. People have to admit, between the iPhone and iPhone 3G is just the connection speed and that's about it. With the Pre coming out, I'm sure Apple is going to step up their game and install things in the next iPhone that's not it now (ie MMS, video, and so on).
Just noticed no mention of video recording under Digital Camera section.
Okay, I don't speak for many, but how many of you out there really use the video function (if you have one) of your phone? I surely don't and even when I did, I almost never take a look at it. Pictures is what last forever and something we look at often. Lastly, something important like taking a video of your baby, do you really want to take it with your camera phone?
I agree that for me its not that important. But it sometimes comes in handy for short video's. Also it still may be possible via some future OS update.
For me this is one of the small showstopper currently (as it is not confirmed yet). I really do need, or better, got very used to have, the video recording function. Even more since I discovered qik. I like to use it to share impressions while I am on vacation.
The quality for me is not an issue, as long as it is on current standards, which is valid for the picture quality as well. If I want pictures I like ot look at even years later, I will have a real camera with me. Phone cameras are getting closer, but it is still some years untill it's even worth to think about them replacing 'real' cameras imo.
Most people will not even notice that it doesnt support it. But I understand that others would want it. So let's hope its possible in the near future via update.
alot of people are going to be real upset and might back out of getting the palm pre if they dont release it on feb 15th.. because sprint reps are saying feb 15th it will be coming out..and alot of people will feel like they been stood up and let down..
on the sprint website at the top they have a button to click that will email you when the pre comes into stores..meaning that its real soon. not next month or summer time..
with the treo pro their is nothing about it on the sprint site meaning its not coming anytime too soon..
palm dont let us down by not having the pre released feb 15th 2009..we have our money in our hands ready to head to the sprint store as soon as they open up to get this phone.
Palm didnt say Feb 15! They said by the end of the first half of 2009!
Also I wouldn't believe Sprint reps regarding the date.
I agree Miles. http://is.gd/jhTB
Not to be too technical, Palm said sometime during the 1st half of 2009!
Lets say that the Pre is a huge hit, does that give us the right to turn into Pre snobs like people with the iphone. I can see this turning into a gang war lol.
Paper always beats rock. So who is going to be the scissors, Android?
this big talk about the feb 15 lets make it happen because thats what we keep hearing and were itching to get our hands on the palm pre so lets drop it on that date before people forget all about the palm pre or something better hits the streets
How about Ed's mention of a rough couple of quarters without the Pre. Wouldn't that seem to mean that they are not expecting a release until into the second quarter. Sorry for you Feb. 15th and March 15th people. But I afraid it could be a little longer than that. http://is.gd/jhTB
if that is so toreym then alot of people are going to forget all about the palm pre they need to come on while everyone is hot for it and stop teaseing people
Good things come to those who wait!
while everyone is hollerin and talking about the pre they need to push the date up this coming week would be nice. they wait any longer people will say F the pre and move on to the next and the talk about the pre will soon fade away
Ok, I'm done. I'm tired of reading the negative comments people put up because they aren't getting to force a company that wants to ensure that the device is ready to go at the launch and has as few bugs as possible to put it out when they want it. I'm done explaining that no one in Sprint has an official launch date for the Pre.
I'm mainly done with all the negativity people like to throw out here. I'm going to continue following all the Pre news I can, chuckling at rumors that I know are false. But I'm done reading and posting comments.
Ed said first half of 2009 when Palm presented the Pre at CES. They deliberately did not give a solid date just in case they had to push it back. The only date Palm is committed to launch by is June 30, which will be the last day of the first half of 2009. I believe it will launch earlier than this...and I don't care when the Pre comes out I will be getting it.
Good day.
Like many, I can't wait for the release of the Pre, but I'm getting sick and tired of guessing on when's it coming out. Whenever it does comes out, I will get one. However, one word to Palm and Sprint - This is ONE and ONLY phone that's going to save your AS_ES!!! The further long you both take to release it, more and more people to go with something else or just not get it. Many things are going against a successful release: 1) the economy, don't joke with yourself, it will get worse; 2) the next iPhone (software or hardware) is coming out around mid year; 3) other phones besides the iPhone are coming out; and 4) either Palm or Sprint might get into financial trouble before the release.
Requires data services at additional cost implies that as long as you have a plan with unlimited data you'll be fine...but still, bank on an Everything Data plan.
Now...finally...to quote that lovable little lolcat: I can haz Pre now?

this phone will not be the Iphone killer and i am glad for it. the Iphone is a toy. the Pre is a workhorse with play capibilities. it is a crossover phone to combind work and play. the Iphone is designed only for play. if i wanted a toy i would talk to Matell
There won't be a PALM finanacial crisis - the Venture Capital company is Elevation and Bono (yes Bono from U2) is on the The Board!

How nice. I really like the things written here. Indeed, this mobile phone deserves all the attention in the world. I would definitely buy it if I had the necessary money.

Dude! thanks Dieter!! Glad to have you the representin'! This phone looks even better! Premium Linux hosting account with DDos Protection designed for small and medium websites.
The example of thesis should be required by different people if contain the data just about this post. I do really know the that’s workable to notice the thesis service that could perform that stuff.
I remember coming across this pictures and a detailed list of specs on another Sprint affiliate network program. To be honest, seeing in in such detail... it didn't look so amazing to me (and I hate that they advertise it as an 8GB when you can use only 7.4)
