Sprint Roadmap Shows Palm Pre "P100" in Q2, More Specs Revealed: 256mb RAM

Boy Genius has scored an internal Sprint Roadmap and you'll be pleased to see that the Palm Pre, apparently aka the P100, is slated for a Q2 2009 release.  Q2 basically means: on tap for the 1st half of the year, but don't hold your breath for a March release.  That's not news, exactly, but it's nice to see that Palm's repeated claims that they're on-time are correct.

As you can see above, Sprint is targeting "high end consumers" and lists out some specs, many of which are nice to see confirmed:

  • EVDO Rev A
  • 8 GB storage, 256 MB RAM
  • Video is listed as "30FPS TBD," which to us means they're hoping it will be ready to support it at launch, but it's still iffy.
  • Also TBD is Sprint NFL support
  • The battery looks to be 1150 mAh.  Not to get too cocky about this, but that pretty much vindicates our original breaking of that story on Jan 15th.

So, now that we know it's set for Q2, what's your release date guess?

And for anyone who's confused by the fact that the P100 is listed under Linux/Android/Google, I think they're just grouping it together with that because it is based on Linux.

There's not a chance in hell Palm will release an Android phone.

It would be cool if they can get the video working!

June 14 release date!

what the hell is "linux palm neutron OS"(under key features)? I thought it was running webOS...

WebOS is based on Linux, maybe Neutron was another codename similar to Nova for the Work-in-Progress at the time these slides were made.

My guess is "linux palm neutron OS" is the core Linux OS (kernel) on top of which webOS runs. I believe webOS is the outer "shell" with which most apps interact.

"Linux Palm OS Neutron OS"

Wait, what? Either that's a typo and they meant "Nova", or they're just making stuff up now.

I say June 1, 2009!

...sooner would be MUCH better Palm!

Not to whine, but I was kinda hoping for at least the 1500 mAh battery as in the Pro. The 1150 mAh battery seemed to die a bit too quickly on my 800w, and I can only guess that the Pre will need a bit more oomph to do all that it can do.

I am selfish. My contract is not up for renew until Nov, so I would rather Palm test Pre more before release. I think most of Pre's customers would not be from this forum (at least I hope not, because we are a very small demographic), so these customer does not really mind if it is a few months later. A good solid product has a much better chance of attracting new users.

I think Video support is a must have. It is a matter of resolution. I think Palm can slap whatever resolution that works at the time of release. They probably wants to optimize the software more to allow a higher usable resolution. I don't think at this point they can change hardware designs.

Nooooo... lol you want it to be released sooner. So that early adopters do real world daily testing and complain to Palm to tweak the real world bugs in the months up until you can purchase the Pre.

very good point! i have such a love hate relationship with being an early adopter. To be totally honest i'm starting to find it to be a waste of my time. I was the first guy on the block to get Vista (i know i shouldn't compare webos to vista) and it wasn't a pleasant experience. A mere 3 months later when I gave it another go, i was, and continue to be, extremely happy with it. I would have hated to be the guy that had the iphone those first few months, as i would have hated to be the guy that had the blackberry storm those first few months. If you are busy enough to need a phone like this, you don't want to waste your time the way those people did. By the same token, a lot of us don't like being left behind so we'll get it anyways. It's a sad state of affairs as kramer would say.

You are right, but I am not that selfish yet ;-). I am sure there will be brave souls that are willing to try anything new, but I hope Pre has a good start and long life, so more and enjoy it.

WebOS has been in development for over 2 years, I am sure Palm has the "alleged" bugs worked out.

Also, with ANY operating system you're going to have updates regardless.

May 15th....but money on it...

Sprint does Sunday releases. May 15th = not Sunday.

You bet money on it Joe? You sound hopeful

Going with April 19th on it. 6 weeks to help out Palm's 4Q2009. That would give about what I can tell is 4 weeks in Sprint's 1Q2009? Does the cellular market mimic manufacturing for desire on product sales, or just the total sales period?

Hoping sooner...

April 12th or 19th. Commercials start showing in NCAA tournament starting March 21st. NCAA tournament held in SPRINT CENTER in KC, also home to SPRINT HeadQuarters

Over on Inklingmarkets.com there's a predictive market I set up to see if 'the market' can decide when the Pre will be available. So far it says March 19. So Palm will have to change gears a bit, I recon... Or someone is going to win a lot of faux money by betting on a May or June date...

I'm betting on June 28th. I don't expect to win the lotto and I don't expect the pre to come out sooner because I want it to.

June 21, is my guess.

June 33, is my guess

WOW!! almost twice the ram as the iPhone that's big
May 3

April 19th would be cool.. my birthday..

PLEASE Not April 19th, I will be out of town!!!

How about April 20? It is my birthday along with Adolf Hitler and Bart Simpson. Plus, Muhammad (prophet), Napolean III, Lionel Hampton, Tito Puente, George (Sulu) Takei, Ryan O'Neal, Veronica Cartwright (Alien), Clint Howard (Gentle Ben), Don Mattingly, Crispin Glover, Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Carmen Electra, Joey Lawrence, etc.

Palm can't let all of us down, can they?

Notice no Java support. Wonder if this is temporary or permanent? Also, no mention of Flash support (because it will not be ready), but we know it is under development.

April, 15.

NOT FOR DISTRIBUTION!!!!
PROPRIETARY AND CONFIDENTIAL!!!!!
lol.... thanx for the leak...

!!! April 12th, Easter Sunday!!! Reason why? I have been obsessing over the Pre since it's announcement, so I gave up "Jonesing" for the Palm Pre for Lent. Besides that, Sprint CS sales rep said release will be sometime in April. Easter Sunday and Palm will arise from the dead(not actually dead but it been close). :)

Early to mid April--Maybe April 19th! If part of the business model subtly outline by McNamee (steal business from At&t by grabbing the first iphone users that initially contracted in 2 years ago this coming June) and woo them with the Pre, I would assume the Pre would have to be out at least a month so the hippity-hop coolness of Pre could spread among the iphone fanatics.

JUST RELEASE THE DAMN THING!!!

no one will care what the pre release date is after apple's iphone announcement tomorrow. if previous comments are correct, that only the people who read and post here are also the only ones anxious for a release date, then palm has already lost their chance to steal iphone customers.

the pre is about to become a footnote in cell phone history.

I agree 100%. Palm is making a stupid move by sittin on the Pre too long. The only real window they have is the one that's open until the next iPhone. Once the announcement is made about a new iPhone those customers will stay with that device. If Palm would go ahead and release the Pre, real-world testing will find and fix the bugs. It just needs to get out the door...

Palm, the window is closing...........

I agree, Palm and Sprint are clearly singularly focused on iPhone.
You never hear the developers or the Palm people talking about Windows Mobile or BB because they are not aiming at that professional and business user and enterprise market.

By defining it against the iPhone Palm has created a problem with iPhones advances

You mean OS 3.0? If so, what does it offer that really steals from the Pre? Seems as though most iphone customers are fairly loyal and happy with what they have (if not locked in their contract for while anyway). Personally the Pre always seemed to be geared toward other smartphone users (wm, bb, etc...)

Exactly, Palm and Sprint are focusing on BB and Winmo users (hi-end business customers). If (when) current/ex iphone users switch over that is a bonus. With regard to 3.0, there won't be that much of a difference from 1.0 and 2.0. If iphone owners haven't figured out that Apple is more interested in media, gaming and building up their app-store, they never will.

Good point but I still think Palm should play this very carefully. They have already shown the specs and hardware for the Pre. Won't be much for Apple or RIM to make some of those same bells and whistles work with the iPhone and the BB. And also, the most important point of all is Palm doesn't have deep pockets...

The hardware itself isn't that special. WebOS is (or at least that's what we're all banking on).

I am a huge Palm fan and I am one of the Pre freaks clinging to every little rumor ... but I am growing weary. I have held off upgrading my current phone (Tre 700wx upgraded to WM6.1), but I am already starting to look at phones from other manufacturers. I am not sure how much longer I will hold out.

When it passes the FCC's hands, you'll have a better idea of when it's coming out. Just keep checking Engadget.com. I want this phone just as much as you people, but lack of video recording is what's bumming me out! I use that feature all the time on my Treo. Palm, please add video recording!!!

I think Palm Sunday will be the release date..get it PALM sunday....okok bad joke..but still 4/5 is my guess

Now wouldn't that be pretty sweet. Don't think any of us would be going to church that day for sure. I don't see that happening what so ever. But think it would be cool.

I vote for "Juneteenth". Give'us us Pre!

April 17. Screw this Sunday release. Give me a reason to go to work late.

I think they should release this in April and like poster wrote let the consumers find the bugs (of course, Palm and Sprint should make sure the bugs are minor and not major ones). Afterwards, Palm will have couple of months to bring out an update to fix any bugs or complaints in time for the iPhone update release. Now, that would be a kick in the nuts to Apple.

im sure there will be constant OTA updates anyway. Why not let us find bugs. You never know what bugs you have until the consumer start messing up the unit on accident in many different ways.

"Users will be able to check and monitor their total data usage on Sprint.com beginning June 8."

With an infrastructure upgrade going live on the 8th I'm going to say June 7th as the release date.

That link is from almost a year ago. I can already see how much data I have used on sprint.com

Any word on if this is the same battery as used in the Treo 800w for sure yet? Might look into one of those Seidio 1350mAh upgrades if that's a "fo' sho'."

I predict no later then June 23'rd. In fact I am thinking sometime between May 12'th and June the 23'rd

I would say realistically the phone will be released on the 21st of June, almost identical wait times from the iPhone announcement to release timeframe. 21st or 28th, but my first guess is 6/21

That all sound dandy, but does the Pre have cut copy & paste? Or MMS? Or Peer-to-Peer bluetooth for multiplayer? Or landscape keyboard support? Or the strongest and mmopst coveted App store ever? What about a 3.5" display? No? What about Push notification instead of draining battery? Linux, Don't make me laugh! Oh wait! You guys' executives are bragging about a browser that Apple built (WebKit), HA! How much faster is 0 with no VoIP support? Get an iPhone, and quit denying what you want, it's not healthy. XD

Copy & paste- yes, MMS- yes. Has an ACTUAL keyboard. And its having it off the bat, and not waiting for a fricken update to get copy/paste and MMS. So if you don't like the PRE why are you here and more importantly why are you commenting on it? Why don't you jerk off with your iphone fanboy.
