Rumor: webOS 1.3.5 Coming in Mid-December?

File under crazy rumor: We've heard that Palm has another webOS update in the works, webOS 1.3.5. We don't have full details yet, but apparently an O2 rep in Germany let loose that 1.3.5 is coming and will, among other things, fix a pernicious bug in the GSM Pre that sets the character limit on SMS messages to 70 whenever a special character like an umlaut is entered.

That's a fine, fine fix, but we're hoping that the promised fix for the App Limit in baked in too. We've been wishing and hoping and thinking and praying, planning and dreaming ...of not having to pick and choose which apps we install.

1.3.1 to 1.3.5 isn't a huge update, so don't expect huge things. Still and all, what other small little fixes are you hoping to see soon?

Thanks, Anonymous!

Fixing the app limit would be great. I have used the MvApp app to address it, but fixing this for non-Homebrew/non-patch users will be huge for users and developers alike.

I would love to see the Flash beta come out as promised by Adobe too. That will help appease the many game seekers and give us the first browser with access to the majority of web content.

App limit will be fixed in the next update because when I submitted my new app to app catalog via the portal, I saw that you can submit application package file size up to 200MB

Hope I'm wrong but I wouldn't expect Palm to fully address the App storage limit until webOS 2.0. They may have to do a fairly significant architectural change that would likely require reformatting the media drive. Or they may place a loopback virtual filesystem on top of the existing media drive, but they'd have to also deal with issue of mounting USB drive simultaneously. Either way, it's a large change that needs lots of testing and may not come until 2.0. But maybe they've been testing this or other solution for quite a while.

They could alleviate a big chuck of storage issues tactically by moving email to the media drive as mvapp does. It's low risk and easier to do than changing app storage. It makes no sense for them to locate email on such limited storage. Email on media could feasibly (technically speaking) be available in a near future release if not the next one.

Curious they are allowing 200MB app package limits. That is encouraging if it means an upcoming complete fix.

I'm not saying anything about 1.3.5. I just uninstalled Fair Dinkum, though.

Interesting! :) coming from a developer...

You probably should have uninstalled that a long time ago, when the features were built in to the package manager service ;)

Thanks for the oh-so-subtle hint. =)

I'd love to see my emails start pushing again. That qualifies as rather important for me.

From what email account are emails not pushing for you?

I had this issue with gmail but just deleted the last received email on my Pre -and- on gmail on my PC and it immedietly started syncing again. (also had to set the network time zone manually to get calendar sync fixed after the WebOS 1.3.1 update which was putting me in the Cayman Islands.)

Gmail. Tried everything short of a full-on doctoring.

Agree! My Gmail doesn't push accurately anymore. Sometimes, I'll get email notifications, but other times, I'll have 2-3 emails that I never got notified about and its very frustrating. Sure hope they address this, it workd perfect in every WebOS release prior to 1.3.1!

So sorry to hear that. That is a real bummer.

There is just one other thing I did I forgot to mention. I explicitly disabled POP on gmail's Settings menu-->forwarding and POP/IMAP tab.

I had both IMAP and POP enabled previously. Since my Pre was set to use IMAP for Google it shouldn't matter, but I made more than one change so I don't know what single action or combination of settings/actions did the trick for me.

Good luck.

Doctoring did not fix Email for me. I still get errors when trying to send with IMAP Gmail.

Receiving seems OK.

Could this be due to the changes in Google Authentication? try and recreate (or create a second ;) ) Gmail account and see if it too has issues

OT but I love that the screen shot used has patches applied. Can't live without em!

1) Fix the Exchange calendar so you can view calendar events that are older than 2 weeks.

2) Provide support for setting up groups for text messaging.

3) Resolve problems with syncing to and from Google calendar.

4) Sync with Google tasks

"Sync with Google tasks"

Google hasn't opened tasks to syncing yet

I am desperate for the group texting. Would pay highly for it.

I'd like to see Palm un-do the change to the calendar app that removes a reminder when the event passes. WHY did you change that Palm?? Also, the "fix" they did (two updates ago I think) so email accounts that are set to update manually didn't work. It still automatically grabs email from the server when you power up the phone :(

I totally agree! If I have a task to complete AT A CERTAIN TIME, I use the calendar to remind me. But I also don't want to set it for an hour so it doesn't auto-dismiss... I submitted this to the Palm website.

I don't expect huge things, but a fix for the GSM data bug in 1.3.1 would be great. That way I could, you know, at least use my Pre...

three things in this order

-speed
-gpu/flash
-video rec

albeit unrealistic.

that probably wouldn't come out with 1.3.5 it is more likely to be a 1.4.0 update. so I would expect those things to show up a lil' bit later. prolly like late Dec. or Jan. My fingers are crossed tho that that stuff comes real freakin' Quick. I Seriously can't wait.

Mine records video fine. Precorder.

Oh give me a break! Precorder is nowhere near ready for primetime-- it's a hack at best.

Video quality look pretty sweet though. We should have video soon, but I doubt with 1.3.5.

Do you smell it? I smell GPU drivers....hopefully, but my nose has been wrong in the past.

I think you have a stuffy nose...

1) Fix SMS Sending Failed PLS!! Works fine on 1.1.3 but on 1.3.1 can only receive SMS not send ANY?

2) unable to write APN Settings..

Both of the above will be highly welcome.!

You can't send a text message anymore? Under what conditions?

Are you in an area with good coverage or do you find yourself roaming a lot (see "R" intstead of "EVDO" on top bar)? Do you have the Roam only patch active?

Text messages fail under 1.3.1 when roaming.

Fix Pandora headset button functionality, please!

(I know its not Palm's job, but they borked Pandora with an API change, so I kinda blame them, lol)

It's so cute how everyone lists all their must have fixes any time an update is just mentioned on this site.

At least the post asked this time. ;)

"Still and all, what other small little fixes are you hoping to see soon?"

You're condescendingly cute.

They seriously need to fix the email app speed. My Treo 600 was 10x faster than this Pre.

The Good Messaging Client is about to be released for the Pre any day now. It was just released for the iPhone today. I can't wait.

whatever you do, bring back my push email!

fix the problem that is causing Quick Dialer, which I paid money for, to not be able to show the pictures of my contacts...lame!

I know that people are always asking about this, but does anyone have any leads on when the Flash Beta will finally become available for the Pre?

Dear Santa,

Please let the update bring:

- speed
- video
- and the ability to choose an email address in my phone book to txt instead of having to write out the email address every time since the message app only allows you to txt a phone number (BOOOO!!!)

Thanks :-)

But hold it. Last time there was rumor of an update coming it was from developers that Palm had sent pre-release of the update to in order to make sure their apps worked. If I remember right it was like a month from the time those developers got the early access until the actual update.

And if I remember right, those developers were not stopped from saying that they had gotten the early access to the update just that they couldn't say anything about it.

So, developers, have you received early access to an update lately?

I need to retract all I said, having just visited the private forums. I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a WebOS release candidate, Congressman.

Hmm, that sounds so very NDA of you...

Simple sound truncation fix please. Text alerts/ Nav Voice etc was truncated after 1.3.1 to the point where sentences are being cutoff in Nav and text alerts sound "broken." Not sure how but please fix this. :)

Was that broken in 1.3.1? I know it is a problem now but didn't realize at one time it *wasn't* a problem.

Yes, it became a problem after the 1.3.1 update.

Rumors are always interesting beasts... sometimes true, sometimes false... you just hope you find out sooner than later which is the case.

But I digress.

If you'll excuse me, I have to spend all day today reducing the bitrate of some of my MP3s (do I really need them all at 256Kb anyway?!?) and recoding some South Park videos because they are all taking up too much space on my media partition.

I'm sure I could put that space to better use.

;)

it's better to have rumors than no rumors at all,at least, they keeps my hopes alive.Right or no?

From twitter this morning:

webOSdev: If you have access to the early access private forum, you should probably go take a look. Just saying...

----

I'd say a WebOS update is imminent in a few weeks.

If I were Palm, I'd be working hard to have the GPU and flash enabled on my phones for holiday shoppers.

Fix the email audio notification issue please.

Only one thing. Apps catalog that works for GSM users.

I want and need Classic

I would like this to include two small fixes:

The error 2035 when trying to access an open wifi that is using a Cisco login protocol

Having my All Inboxes tell me "No messages in -1 days" when they're empty. They're often wrong and I do get e-mail the next day.

An virtual keyboard would be awesome. I know its available in a patch but would rather it just be baked into the phone

+1 and that will be my christmas present,Palm Santa!

Would love it if we could get rid of the lag that is more evident than ever since 1.3.1. Plus can we please have option to buy apps

So that is why I can't access the 1.3.1 update in Germany---because it sucked...right??? Now I hope they'll fix what should be fixed already...meaning being a 1.0 device...simple and plain...and why don't Palm hire a few more talented people...they should have made some cash this year...

my phone has become unbearably slow. like 7 or 8 seconds to react to finger presses slow. And it's i get too many cards errors a lot. very annoying.

but as for 1.3.5 i'm pretty much waiting for webos 2.0 at this point.

+1 I think that this will bring both the Video Feature and also use of the GPU... So I too Good sir "blackmagic01" am awaiting WebOS 2.0 Super excited when that Finaly drops! :-D ♥ LOVE YOU PALM ♥ Keep those big updates a'coming. :-D

Fix the app limit is a must!

Fix the PDF title covering the search problem. its been over 3 months since they have known about it

Is nobody else suffering from the over-active 'Too many cards open' message? This came with the 1.3.1 update and it trumps all other bugs for me. I mean, sometimes I close all my apps and I still get that message.

Yep. I get it daily now where as I only saw it bi-weekly at most before. Also really tired of the truncated notification sounds. At least my battery life sucks too. Stinking 1.3.1

I was getting it a lot after installing and activating the switcharoo app. I turned off the wallpaper switching and restarted and haven't had it come up since.

Sounds clips being truncated is one of my big gripes, as is the phone app seems to get slower and slower to respond.

Sounds being cut off in middle ruins all my cool sms alerts. And the phone app....try calling an automated service and entering numbers, more than once I have had an impatient system tell me i made an invalid entry because the phone app was going slow regestering my key presses.

I have noticed that too. I have narrowed it down to a couple of apps and have taken them off. It doesnt happen as often anymore but it still pops up about every two weeks. The only thing that makes it go away is shutting down and taking the battery out.

One thing to fix would be how long it takes to start them damn thing up.

With the 1.3.1 SDK, Palm released a tool that allows developers to see if their App is leaking memory. It is up to the developer to test them and fix them. I was happy to see Word Whirl playing nice on the Platform after using the new tool.

i get it. I can honestly say 1.3.1 seems to have just tanked my phone. i get ridiculously poor performance and lag. the browser now crashes everytime i use it. and i do get the too many cards. The biggest annoyance is it's not registering my finger taps in a timely fashion. like if you click somewhere on the launcher it will either not react at all or react really late like it's storing the tap.

if you try and multitouch zoom nothing happens most of the time. then wait 7 seconds and if your lucky it will zoom. if you're unlucky it will open some link on the page. Then you have to go back. wait. then try to zoom again. really not pleasant.

Since the screen shot is a patched Pre (battery % and date), does that mean that the developers have gotten the update already??

The screenshot is of the 1.3.1 update with a photoshopped "5" in it. And no comment.

Are you sure it wasn't Gimped instead?

I didn't see a gag in its mouth.

(Not sure if Derek is a Photoshopper or GIMPer.)

1.) Calendar search. Bet a high schooler could program that in if they had access to everything. Utterly ridiculous that it isn't there and hasn't been. Anybody who USES a calendar occasionally needs to SEARCH for something...unless one remembers things for 365 days....

2.) See #1.

The screen shot is an obvious Photoshop job meant only to illustrate the article.

I want to be able to edit my voicemail number!

For such an incremental upgrade, please include... About 70% of the minor (yet critical) patches available via homebrew. Like the LED notification that Palm wrote themselves but disabled.

I'd also get on the GPU excitement bandwagon, but would never assume that to come on such a small version change.

In addition to the obvious like more app space and faster response - how about something simple and old school - like when a call comes in to have a 'dismiss with text message' option.

And for texting - how about a drop down menu for:
1. quick texts that I repeat often &

2. for emoticons, instead of having to type each one.

Basic stuff that I thought they would have added by now.

All those were present in centro

I'd be happy if they'd just fix the things they broke from 1.2.1 -> 1.3.1, while keeping the things they fixed working. (ie, sound issues in sprint navigator)

Please fix TOUCHSTONE sleep/time-out behavior please!

Your TS is broken-- known issue. Return it and get a new one.

Incorrect.

The 1.3.1 patch disabled the Pre's feature of staying on while on the touchstone. Instead it times out and goes to sleep as if it were not on the touchstone. I confirmed this with Palm tech support.

Well, it looks like you are right. I just tested my 1.3.1 Pre + Touchstone and it certainly DOES timeout and go to sleep! I didn't even notice that... but I KNOW it didn't do that before 1.3.1- it would stay "on" forever...

Now, for my use, I think this is an improvement, since I never use the thing while on the Touchstone. But for someone else who would watch movies or something while charging, I can see where that would be an extremely irritating change,

If it would just give me anywhere near the functionality I had before 1.3.1 I'd be very happy. At the moment, the headline made me a bit nauseous...

I would love it if the universal search included the calendar!!! I miss that so much from my other palm devices! With how slow the calendar is it could literally take 30 minutes to find an old event.

So...do we all want to face reality now, or wait for the release?

Here's the reality:

NONE OF THE ABOVE REQUESTED FIXES WILL BE IN THE NEXT WEBOS RELEASE.

Especially in a third tier update (1.3.X). Here's some more reality:

GPU support, App Limit, Video Recording (by Palm): Will not happen this year. Maybe not until Q2 of 2010.
Flash and some of those other requests: Maybe Q1 of 2010

Wish I wasn't under NDA so I could debunk your post. :)

I know what you mean. I too am under NDA.

By the way, did I mention that I did some spring cleaning of my media partition today (even though it's not spring 'round here)? I like having as much space available for future needs as I can. You know... just in case.

Sorry for the... tangent

You all are just so discrete about things... ;)

lol, I love this community :-)

+1 Wish we could talk...

Dont have a problem with my messenger app so I guess it must only be with certain characters.

Would be nice if the enter key could be used to make a new row instead of sending the message or atleast make it possible to change the setting via preferences.

"1.3.1 to 1.3.5 isn't a huge update, so don't expect huge things."

Thanks for the tip! However, I stopped holding my breath anxiously awaiting proper updates awhile back.

Currently, Palm is just stuck on stupid.

Bring it on! 1.3.1 Has been a crap update.
Sure new features, sure faster mostly, but the browser is buggy, doesn't recognize some clicks until the page is move to the link is in a different spot(?) and the spontanious pausing is ridiculous.

This appears to be a set of user-submitted benchmarks for parts of webOS 1.3.5. Mostly disk I/O.

I cant believe that no one else has pointed out one of the greatest calling features from the Treo! If you call someone on their cell and they dont answer, naturally you want instant gratification, so you then call them at home. BUT on the Pre you have to start from the beginning and look up the same contact again! On the treo when you hung up the call to the cell phone it would place you right back at the contact. From there you just hit another # to call. I think Palm was the inventor of this feature in the first place.

Speed is terrible. I cannot use the phone as a power users at these snail speeds.

More built in ring tones???? Am i missing how to get more than the handful they give you?

The Pre supports mp3 ringtones, so just make your own and put them in the ringtones folder in usb mode. Or just choose a whole song that's already on your phone.

All the above would be nice.... but essential is an Apps store that works and allows you to buy apps including Classic for GSM/European users. Come on Palm - we know you can do it!

To all: please look back when PalmOS 1.01 was released, and
notice how PalmOS has been evoluated to PalmOS 4.1 on the DragonBall processors. If the same happens to WebOS, i think we
can look forward to an interesting future!

Here are my 2 cents:

1: Get the GPU to work.
2: Fix the LAG (probably fixed if the GPU does its job)
3: Speed up the code.
4: Customizable universal search (Let the user decide to
include Calendar, Google, Contacts, Apps....)
5: Keep up the good work, like i said: the future of WebOS looks promising!

I'm simply hoping that it will stop giving me Exchange EAS "Login credentials rejected" notifications (but take them anyway even tho unmodified) like was the case before 1.3.1.

All I want in 1.3.5 at this point is the major memory leaks I've been having in built-in applications to be fixed.

I agree. Palm's next update should focus solely on the LAG! Everything else becomes a lot less meaningful when the phone lags. FIX THE LAG! I want nothing but the lag fixed. Just do it.

The countdown to June 6 2010 and a new device at discount has begun, fix it or consider me -1 to your user count.

I don't know about the rest of you but I've noticed the delayed gmail in other devices as well. I have a Motorola Droid as well as a Palm Pre and both have been showing delays in my gmail. Maybe its a problem on their end?

I would really like to see a folder manager or something. Something in which you can order/edit/delete/copy etc. your folders and files on the phone. And something that I dont understand why its still not possible. Sending stuff via bluetooth to another mobilephone.
One thing that isnt that an important thing but still it would be nice if one could have a choice of how many icons in a row should be in the launcher [an official thing].
the rest works quite fine. dont wanne make the impression that I need plenty of stuff although I still miss many things... but I've got the feeling palm is going in the right direction

I am having a problem with calendar appointments I enter on my Pre syncing to Microsoft Exchange. I hope that 1.3.5. will fix this.

I have shared my Yahoo calendar with my wife. It shows up on her webmail and in her Pre calendar's. But the data does not sync....Fixie pleasie

LED NOTIFICATIONS! Why do you continue to leave this disabled Palm? This should have been available at launch, even my old flip phone offered this. It's not like I am asking for a voice recorder, voice activated dialing, or video recorder like most phones have offered for years. However, those things would be nice before I am eligible for upgrade to a new phone...

There is a patch for this.

text messaging problem. When trying to delete a conversation it doesn't actually delete it just hides the conversation somehwhere. You can still find the entire conversation thread by doing a universal search for the deleted contact within the messaging app. It sucks cause when you send or receive a text you have to use the universal search feature within the messaging app to see the conversation and read the text message. Apparently I am not alone and many people have tried erasing text conversations and are in the same boat as me. This is a huge problem as the text messaging app is broken now on my phone!!

How about fixing the "Sorry! Too many cards open" problem I have everytime I try and open more than two cards displaying a web page. Seriously, am I the only one with this issue?

just make it work as good as it did before this last update and I will be happy. Can't open pictures in my email?!? WTF? Never had a crash/reset ever till the last update. Etc Etc... just fix it and stop screwing stuff up

#1 Fix Stability (Ever since 1.3.1, my phone been rebooting on its own)

#2 Improve Googlemaps (include streetview, send address via sms, recent address list & etc)

#3 Speed (It takes too long to open apps )

#4 Make gif pictures move in the sms app

#5 Show birthday & age in the calendar

I love the hard work they been putting into these updates so far.

Show Google Tasks on the calendar.

1) better email app-gmail app on my stupid t9 phone was so much better than the pre's
2) built in faster virtual keyboard which can pop up any time with auto correct and suggestions.
3) a little icon to the side for fast scrolling through long lists-see android

not sure if this was posted but just got 1.3.2 pushed ota to my Pixi. Not sure what exactly updated but my data connection seems to be more stable and running faster.

4) agenda view in calendar-like on mobile google calendar

I just got 1.3.2 pushed to my Pixi ota. Not sure exactly what updated but my data connection seems to have become faster. It also updated to Sprint 2.1.

Proxy support for wifi!!!

Would really like video recording. The alpha version of precorder has been a nice addition but it's very unreliable. It doesn't always record when you think its recording and there is no preview of the image you are capturing on the screen while recording. But even this limited recorder is better than nothing. So come on Palm, give us some basic features here before people are elidigable for an upgrade and start flocking to Android.

MSN Messenger (Live Messenger).....

Please please please, Proxy support, I used to take the p!55 out of iphone users for this when I had my Nokia N95 connected through our work proxy. Now they have proxy support and we don't. Grrrrrrrr

One of my apps needed to update this morning with the reason being "Updated for the transition to webOS 1.3.5".

That is fast, unless it was a core app. Most devs haven't have access to 1.3.5 very long.

open the appcatalog for GSM user - they only can use about 60 apps instead off currently 504!!
Please remove the silly "app is made for US and not for others" philosophy.

I would like to see the 2 V's
Voice Dial
Video Recording

Oh and last but not least..scrolling up or down to an earlier word in a current sms that your sending,,,just in case you want to read it before sending.

If its a long message the words go up and become hidden under the recent texts

Please tell me that more ppl want a multi-contact texting function. Am I the only one?

Please add back the sensitivity to the touch screen!
I'm sick of having to re-tap items over and over.. .

I'm on my 4th Pre, so I would say that I would like to see better units first.

Of course knowing that isn't ever going to happen, I'd like to see voice dial.

Of course knowing that isn't ever going to happen either, I'd like to see Bell allow me to switch my Pre to a BB or something that actually works.

I really liked my Pre when I got it, I still like to look at it, but with no decent apps for Canada and a product that fails more often than works, I am not expecting anything but a let down with the newest update.

I would really like that you guys add live messenger on the new update.

I'm new here and not on the tech level that most of you guys appear to be, so I apologize in advance if my question is redundant. I unfortunately upgraded to the new version of itunes and now it won't sync with my pre. Is this something that will likely be addressed and is there something I can do in the short-term to remedy this problem?

Just set it to USB drive mode and use Windows Media Player...
