Rumor: webOS 1.2.1 Delayed, but Will Fix iTunes Sync

Bad news PreCentral Nation: an anonymous tipster sends word that webOS 1.2 (and possibly paid apps in the App Catalog) could be delayed (again) until next week. The delay comes from Sprint's need to test the changes made since that first webOS 1.2 leak, including all the changes surrounding the App Catalog. The results will be that webOS 1.2 will be released as webOS 1.2.1. Oh, and though it's not the source of the delay, webOS 1.2.1 should re-enable iTunes sync.

Why isn't iTunes sync the cause of the delay? Because so far it's taken very little of Palm's resources to keep it up and running, says the tipster:

  • Time it took for Palm Developers to re-enable iTunes sync for webOS 1.1: about five minutes (they just had to change the Vendor ID, after all)
  • Time it took for Palm Developers to re-enable iTunes sync for webOS 1.2.1: just shy of two and a half hours (we'll be extremely curious to see if this is true and how they did it)
  • Time it will take the next time (and there will be a next time): totally unclear, but Palm is committed to keep doing it until that time estimate gets to be something over a 40 man-hours or so.

Is it worth it for Palm to keep up these iTunes shenanigans? Apparently so far it's not taxing the company much and they're hoping that their loyal users will place blame for the situation on Apple.

Though the tipster's information seems pretty solid to us, we have to admit that we pray it doesn't pan out, we've been waiting for 1.2 for a long time now (Plus, we were just talking about how Palm was hitting their marks). We'll know either way by the end of the day on Thursday.

Say it ain't so.

Although, I'm not updating iTunes, this morning I noticed 9.0.1 is out and available for download... so, maybe this IS the reason. ;-)

video, voice, text forwarding, notification sounds and landscape email please.

Shouldn't be so bad...
I have been using itunes 9 a lot. I don't like the new look, the store is much more irritating... I don't like how it's structured...
...and i bought a 9.99 itunes album on amazon for 2.99.

Do you know that songbird automatically syncs to itunes...
looks and works similarly...
still sees the palm pre and syncs it to playlists!
They just have cover art issues.
It doesn't see cover art that was downloaded through itunes.
Argh. So close to being perfect.

i do not care if my pre syncs with itunes or not! this battle is getting really old. i'm all for saying f u apple, but come on! i just want my update, itunes sync or not. i would never use that feature anyway. who needs to put a bunch of music on their pre anyway when you've got pandora. just let it go. let the if*ck$ have their itunes and their ipones and go f*ck their iselves!

I'm with you on that, some people don't care about itunes crap. I much rather have a forwarding text, flash support, and even a camcorder feature added to the Pre. I wish they will make up their minds and give us the update!

Hijacking my own comment here -- The title of this article is misleading.

The first thing it implies is that the reason for the delay is the iTunes sync. If you don't actually read the article or skim over it you will miss the very thorough explanation by Dieter.

The second thing it implies is that iTunes sync somehow compensates for the delay (by using the word 'but' in the title). Many disagree with that as well.

REPEAT:
iTunes sync has got nothing to do with the delay

I agree. 2 hours of work did not hold up 1.2

I'm not sure I believe an unknown tipster about anything...

if not iTunes, what? It's not like Palm has said anything at all on this, it all comes from "tipsters".

So, I'm not sure it has nothing to do with iTunes either.

Serious Question: I noticed tons of comments about how iTunes sucks. Is there really better software to manage music on the Mac? I'm curious.

I am a long time iTunes user and has come to love its automated (auto sync & smart playlists) features. (Once the rules are set, I don't have to worry about what gets synced. The old podcasts are removed from the ipod/Pre and the new podcasts are in. New music? Automatically synced to the device.)

Plz share if you know of a better app on the Mac to sync an iPod/Pre.

For the record, i tried DoubleTwist. Its a great start but its got ways to go. I like its social features better than the music management features as of now!

Esp, with the Podcast bookmarking coming on the webos 1.2, I would really like for Palm to include iTunes sync. Until then, no iTunes 9 for me.

No !!!!! Here we go again...Lets wait.....

Sigh... the ole... Hurry up and Wait...

Good to hear the iTunes enablement isn't taking up much time... still unsure if it really needs to be pursued...

We can only hope that 1.2/1.2.1 will come out with the much needed missing features that everyone has been craving.
Video
Visual Voicemail
Landscape Mode everywhere
Texting enhancements
Battery life improvement

In the meantime... I wait with an Untweaked phone... hoping that my patience is rewarded... Not like I am going anywhere though if it doesn't come out on Thursday... :P

COMPLETELY AGREE!!! Are there that many users out there who rely on iTunes for syncing? I can honestly say that I haven't used it since buying my Pre and think this is absolutely RIDICULOUS that Palm is still trying to purse an Apple program designed for Apple products to sync with.

I really hope this is just a rumor!!

Here is an idea to spend the 2.5 hours on instead:

A.) Pick one of the Calendar bugs and fix it

-or-

B.) Put up a message on the screen when plugged into iTunes that links to DoubleTwist or Songbird.

** 2.5 developer hours to change it maybe, but how much time was involved in testing / regression / acceptance / deployment. What about support costs and training (Im sure Sprint got a lot of phone calls after iTunes 9 came out about why their phone doesnt work. Making it work sporadically is costing more money than 2.5 man-hours. )

Ugh. More waiting and posts to go through... Palm is making me cry. I'm anxious for the speed improvements and the pay catalog (I wanna buy Yahtzee already!)... humph.

alright, this is getting a little ridiculous. If this is true, im disappointed and impatient.

Wow, horribly disappointed, been literally counting down the days to this.. They gotta stop playing games with us.. was bad enough seeing their official release notes on their webpage for 1.2 and then not getting it until this Thursday but now another delay? Come on!

FUCK! No Double fuck. FUCK FUCK!

I'm waiting for it so i can add the keyboard. hell i'm still on like itunes 7. don't update.

You know, there may be children or adolescents reading this. Not to mention some business web filters may deny pages with swear words. I would ask that you please refrain from swearing in future posts.

Thank you.

I'll second that. There are very few times I could see the F-bomb as appropriate. A software upgrade date being possibly delayed, whose date would not be know if someone didn't violate an NDA, isn't anywhere in the same vicinity as one.

I couldn't fucking agree more! The internet is a dangerous and scary place! The word "fuck" does so much irreparable damage to the world! Get a grip people, it's a word. They only have as much power as you give them.

I as others are so enamored with the breath of your vocabulary and depth of the English language that you can use such brilliant and technical language. We are so glad you lack the verbose usage of words.

That would be "breadth", actually...

I hope it will get here on Thursday :)) then we can all start bragging about the next update. for me its a great phone and whenever Palm releases them then that is when they will be out!

The need for Sprint to test a software update doesn't quite sound right. Do other smartphones (Blackberry, Nokia, etc...) have to do this aswell? It seams like if there was an issue with an update it would only affect the phone, not the network. If my phone could wreak havok on the network then we have bigger problems.

Yes other smart phones go through this on all carriers.

Yeah this sucks. I hate to sound whiney but damn I want this update. This is the one time I hope this tipster is not credible. Come on 1.2!! Is it possible we will get 1.2 on thursday and 1.2.e next week?? Why would they add .1 so quick?

For God's sake... are you really that impatient that you can't wait 7 more days for this significant update?! Would you rather have an update NOW that has issues, or a clean, functional update in one week!

Um, WE ALREADY HAVE A PHONE WITH ISSUES NOW!

Please, what are your issues with the phone? Can you make calls? Can you receive emails, texts, and other messages?

so now the only highlight for me in this week, is just getting my touchstone? come on! sure, I am synced with itunes right now, if in the future they can't sync with itunes, it really is not the end of the world.

any people that have stayed away from the tweaks, I'd say to just put them on, because at this rate, we may never know when 1.2 (.1) may be released, and you might as well enjoy some of the tweaks that quickinstall 2.5 has to offer.

Woops, I guess the pre doesn't warn you if your resending data when you refresh.

funny i went from being in a good mood to being irritated just that fast. especially in a week of mostly good palm news. first they get slapped by the usb people then this. wonder if it's related.

This is really bad news. I've been checking for the update almost 10 times a day in the hopes that Palm will do an early release. I think it is time for me to just check at the end of the day. I hope they do move on schedule and release it this Thursday.

I usually check the app catalog once in the morning and once in the evening. I check for updates once a day. I'm not going to let Palm's release schedule be a stress point. After living with a Treo 700p for 3 years I've learned patience. :)

LOL! Same here! It took forever for them to get the MR release out! I'm still disappointed though as I thought Palm was doing so well at changing that frustrating customer experience. Oh well!

so I just read part of the story about the USB argument on engadget, and these quotes might possibly suggest as to why we are seeing this very delay?

"Update: Digital Daily has come away with a very, very different story from the actual leaked communication, and it turns out that the USB-IF has actually sided against Palm on two different fronts. First, the Forum has told Palm that it doesn't see how blocking Palm's Vendor ID from accessing iTunes violates its policies; and second -- this might be the big one -- Palm's actually riled up the Forum by saying that it'll be using Apple's Vendor ID on the Pre going forward. It wants a clarification of Palm's "intent" within a week, saying such a move would be contrary to the rules and regs set out for the proper use of USB. At this point the question becomes, how many companies and industry bodies is Palm willing to piss off to keep iTunes working exactly the way it wants?"

I agree the delay might be due to the vendor id spoof. I don't think Palm understands yet that the people who own the Pre's don't want nothing to do with apple... if the sync ability is there than its there if its not ... so what... there are other ways to go around it...

I couldn't have said that better myself. I have a pre, why do I care about syncing with itunes. Itunes is for ipods and iphones. Now I don't mind waiting for my update but not because palm want me to be able to sync w/ itunes WTF. How about because they are working on giving us some features that we could really use. A spell checker would be nice. Maybe qucik text, that was a nice feature on my treo. What about the ability to forward a text message. It would also be nice to have video or even view videos in different formats. I'm really starting to think that Mr. Rubinstein just want to iritate his former employerand doesn't really give a shit about what we want. I hope I'm wrong but if they really give a damn about how we sync our phones then they need to develop their own software

I do sync music with my Pre from iTunes, & love that feature. But, like the article says, we're not waiting for 1.2(.1) because of iTunes Sync. I would understand if the update was ready & they're waiting for iTunes, I would rather have the big update out now, & waiting a few extra days q weeks for a minor update to allow syncing, but that's not the case with this update (according to the tip / leak).

Agree totally.
Palm, leave apple with their crap-tunes please and move on. Remove itunes sync and release 1.2 tomorrow. My smart phone (Pre) is not up to par with my dumb phone (Instinct). I can forward texts, send, receive, and record video, have visual voicemail on a dumb phone! Palm needs to address these simple issues NOW and leave the syncing issue on the back burner.

my thoughts exactly.

+1!

+++++++++ 1,000,000

Aagin, the post says iTunes Sync is NOT what is delaying 1.2(.1):

"Oh, & though it's not the source of the delay webOS 1.2.1 should re-enable iTunes Sync. Why isn't iTunes Sync the cause of the delay? Because so far it's taken very little of Palm's resources to keep it up & running..."

"Hijacking my own comment here -- The title of this article is misleading.

REPEAT:

nevertheless this is still true:

"My smart phone (Pre) is not up to par with my dumb phone (Instinct). I can forward texts, send, receive, and record video, have visual voicemail on a dumb phone! Palm needs to address these simple issues NOW"

itunes sync isn't delaying it... but if you keep spoofing vendor id's, I think a few people will take notice and try bring up some sort of case, infringement bs.... don't you think this is like COUNTERFEITING lol maybe need a better word... i'm glad they are "testing", i can wait, i just want the phone to operate smoother and all the other complaints... it'll take time i know...

I view it as someone finally standing up to Apple. I do have an iPod, & obviously use iTunes to manage music, so it's all sorted / tagged / ratted to my liking. Most of the playlists i listen to are "My Top Rated" or "Top Played" which makes in extremely difficult to find each song to drop & drop on my Pre. I'm with the people who want the updates released instead of waiting for iTunes Sync (which is not the case here, but just in general) & then there could always be a minor update later. I'm just tired of seeing the posts with everyone bashing the //ability// to sync with iTunes, when that has no factor with this update. I don't view it as Palm 'stealing' Apple's property because what have they taken? The closest thing you can say is the Vendor ID, which okay, they probably shouldn't be doing, but being able to sync my Pre without an extra program is a +1 in my book, & seeing a non-iPod sync in iTunes is fun ;).

REPEAT:
iTunes sync has got nothing to do with the delay"

OK - Then what IS the cause of the delay?

It's all just rumor and speculation... just because some "source" says the delay is not because of iTunes, doesn't make it true.

If so, why doesn't the "source" tell us what the delay IS caused by? I'm hoping they are working on text forwarding, voice features, video ecording, message notification options, visual voice-mail, etc. but, I'm not hopeful.

The source DID say what the delay was due to...

"The delay comes from Sprint's need to test the changes made since that first webOS 1.2 leak, including all the changes surrounding the App Catalog."

Agree the first half of the sentence is not specific, but the second half is and makes sense. The app catalog is undergoing a major change that involves payment processing. They have got to get that right. If it didn't pass their internal QA process they have no choice but to delay the release until it does.

Doesn't bother me, patience is a virtue. Surely others can find something else to do for another week then playing with their phone.

Good thing there is a Woot!Off today.

What about us that don't give a rat's ass about iTunes? Just release the damn thing!

Why bother waiting? They should have just released what they had, then released the "tweaked" version when it was finished; they would look great for releasing yet another update!

Damn you Palm!!! Yes i said that! I'm tired of all these delays, we don't care about the damn Itunes sync

Enough with the iTunes sync. Who cares?! There are plenty of ways to get music onto the Pre. It's no big deal so stop with the delays and the bullshit and do what you say you're gonna do. Release the update and the paid app catalog!!! You're really starting to piss me off...

That is super lame, what about those of us who switched to the platform because we don't like iTunes, and why should itunes dictate OS releases? I'm really pissed off at palm right now, how can smart people be so dumb.

+1! WORD!

I am like many others, and am looking forward to the update and apps. But another week is not the end of the world. Yes I am impatient but I am sure it is worth the wait. I sure there is a reason. Now I have something to look forward to next week I guess.

PS: I personally don't think the delay is just about iTunes. I guess I don't care either way about iTunes. I use a sync program to put my files and music on my pre and it works great.

+1

Le Sigh

omg itunes is so important. i will wait FOREVER for it. lets just stop improving the pre altogether to focus on itunes sync. after all, the pre IS a personal medial player, right?

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

Maybe the delay is due to particular apps that also needed the iTunes sync function?

Frankly, I think Palm maybe establishing a case for anti-trust violations with this USB sync thing. USB policy standards be damned.

everyone should just calm the fuck down. so there is another delay big deal...i too check 4 times daily to see if 1.2, i guess 1.2.1 now, has come out but only because im bored at work and need to play with my pre. 3 days after 1.2.1 is released all of you whining now about the delay will complain about what palm didnt include in the update and then start pissing and moaning about when 1.3 will come out.

Sounds about right. It does seem to be forum members MO. "I want it all. I want it all. I want it all! And I want it now!'

that's for sure I just want video and text - sms forwarding if they want to apppeal to the yonger class that's what they should fix first and foremost don't under stand why they are not fixing this stuff first

garbage

I'm going to pick up an iPhone 3Gs tomorrow. Sadly, Palm just isn't ready for prime time.

LOL that is just sad! You are upset that much about an update that never had a release date to begin with that may be pushed back one week so your going to buy a different phone? Ridiculous! Lol omg. Not ready for primetime? Stop reading apple blogs. 3GS is wack. The update will be out soon get over yourself.

See YA! Now, you can be a pest in the Iphone world. A rumored delay in an update was the last nail in your coffin, eh?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

There too busy trying to sell phones. We should hopefully see better updates once the GSM Pre is launched.

Great! sigh... well don't be surprised if that update gets pushed back yet another week coz iTunes just released version 9.0.1 yesterday which hasn't fixed Pre sync either but has made changes to their sync routines again. And look at this garbage we Pre users have to put up with: http://www.quickpwn.com/2009/09/itunes-9-0-1-update-still-blocks-palm-pr...

YEY! another delay, I love delays so fun to hear people go crazy mad for this update! I myself am mad and tired of waiting, and waiting and waiting. Whats up with 1.2.1? I mean shzz 1.2.0 hasn't been released yet, why don't they just release 1.2.0 on the 24th and release 1.2.1 next week xD simple I may say. I hope so xD but yeah, Palm please stop changing your mind, we Pre users are dying for this release :p. You know what, I live 20 mins away from Palm Inc. If 1.2 isn't released, Im gonna come down there, sneak into the CEO office and press that big red button to release 1.2 myself! haha aahhhh I guess we are gonna have to wait again! Or I hope this rumor is just a scare-trick prank to make us go crazy!

I would rather wait to get a GREAT update than getting a hurried up lame one.

its not going to be a great update, its probably something we will be disappointed in again

Cry me a river!

Yeah, you keep waiting, ok?

why is everybody getting pissed at palm. After all this is just a rumor.

what do you expect. it's a negative rumor. i'm sure if the rumor was "palm may give everyone a hundred bucks" everybody would be happy with palm. again it's not a positive rumor so you can expect people to not be happy.

This whole phone is a rumor... Nothing but rumors.... NOTHING!!

HTC Hero here I come!!

Touch pro 2 here I come

your mother here I come? Seriously guys, patience. Tomorrow will tell all. They are probably going to drop 1.2.0 tomorrow and 1.2.1 later.

I trust my Palm with my heart. I believe in them always and forever!!!!!!!!! lol....

the update wont be great...it will sync with itunes. yawn

This update was the only real thing keeping me with the pré. Between the oreo twist, the slider shutoff problem, and a keyboard that goes out once a week, I shouldn't be forced to suffer through a sea of rumors and delays just to give my expensive phone some real functionality. I don't care what you guys say about the early days of the iPhone or how we need to give palm time. It's past time that the pré userbase had a smartphone and not a dunce. Generally when you pay a large sum of money for a product or service, you expect it to function like other products in its field. Also, none of that "obviously you aren't cut out to be an early adopter" crap, either. If this update is delayed, palm will have lost yet another customer to htc. Step up your game guys, I want to love the pré so badly but you're making it almost impossible with your mile long list of severe hardware flaws and your under-achieving OS.

RE: Pirate_D
Obviously, the people that think this phone is so great never had a true smartphone before. They don't know what they're missing. Oh well...

I have had three smartphones before the Pre, & the Pre is leaps & bounds beyond them, so much better in every way. Thanks for your "reasoning" though.

Like i said, you've never had a true smartphone before.

Pirate, sounds like you should move on to another phone. Your stress will be much lower and your life will be improved. And I'm sure Palm thanks you for the purchase.

Dude, take your phone back to Sprint and they'll swap it out if its having all those problems. I swapped out my first because of a dead proximity sensor, then swapped the refurb a week later because it was a Hydrox (worse than an Oreo). They were very cool about both (albeit kinda slow on the 1st). I love the pre despite the manufacturing issues that are inherent to a slider, and love how easy it is to get up and running on a replacement.

If you dislike the pre that much, I really really doubt that 1.2 being ONE week later will make the difference.

maybe they are telling us a delay so we would expect it next week...then they release it before that day.....then it would make everyone even more happen towards palm....i'm getting very impatient as i untweaked my phone and have been waiting since the last time they said it was suppose to be released!!!!! sigh......

Palm hasn't ever said when it would be released. People are twisting rumors with reality in their minds.

delay delay delay ..and when we do get it, it probably wont fix anything of REAL concern .. like basic functions/features that shoulda been there BEFORE it was released in the first place :)

That's right. 100% agree. Like i've said b4: NOTHING BUT LET DOWNS FROM PALM on this flimsy Pre. And don't blame Sprint. I've been with Sprint for at least 10 yrs and I never had to go on forums to complain about anything. AT ALL.

ugh

Everyone crying right now please STOP. We are talking about a phone getting an update not your girfriend getting "enhancements" or something. To those who are saying goodbye.... good! dont let the door hit you in the butt on the way out. I'm tired of hearing the crying anyways. If your life is dependant on a phone upgrade you have more problems than the Palm OS 1.10 blues.

This is not the mountains some are making it out to be, especially if the software Sprint is test is Visual Voicemail and Video recording!

Vis VM and video? You must be in dreamland. Nothing personal.

While, I do not listen to downloaded music, I do have more than 90 audiobooks which I 'read' as I drive several hundred miles each week [in my Subaru Forrester which gets an amazing 35 to 45 miles to the gallon, highway driving, on a standard internal combustion engine - documented via the computer downloads and record keeping], and the best way to sync those is still via the iTunes software.

Yes, I realize she's a vain lady, but she's well entrenched in the software community and, in spite of her quirks and idiosyncrasies, does a reasonable job of parsing and synching content with devices.

Unfortunately, because of both Apple’s fights with Palm, and the fact that Palm does not support the direct conversion of Audible content at this time, I also have to convert those DRM protected audio books to MP3 files, and if I want the book covers to properly display, re-link them to the new MP3 files and then manually add the genre, album, author, artist, and other information.

Come on, Apple and Palm - play nice together!

I have spent thousands of dollars on purchasing these audio books and OWN THEM. Just like I OWN the hundreds of hard cover books in my home library. I should have the right to play them whenever, and wherever I want to - not at the whim of some inane, anal retentive DRM gatekeeper who wants to try to make more money off of me.

I believe in the author making money off of his or her publication. I also believe that the distribution agent has a right to get paid for making the product available for sale and download.

In Illinois, thanks to legislation mandated by the ability of the Illinois State Police to reverse engineer all software they purchase, and pushed through as part of the shrink-wrap legislation in 1987, we OWN ALL RIGHTS when we purchase or download software and/or content, and, so long as we do not re-distribute anything, or sell modified copies, have the right to back up a copy and make any mods we want to that software.

So, to Apple, I say, cut the crap and allow Pre, and other Palm users to use your iTunes product with their phones. The FCC already clipped your [Apple and ATT's] wings regarding net neutrality - take a lesson - the past is prologue!

To Palm, I say 'thank you' for your persistence in keeping up with your attempts to remove any roadblocks that Apple throws your way as you continue to develop this incredible Pre phone and the Web OS.

Omg really? Who cares about an itune issue...if you use itunes so much get a ipod I just want an update and a video on my pre screw itues....people can covert there music....or just not have all there music on their phone...I mean how much are ya usin the music...I'm 18 last year or school..I use music on the buss and in art ...I don't think the batter coild take more daly use then that...update soon pless..ohh ps love the temes...I got that classic blue.. And whent threw and made it my own usin gimp love it

I didn’t know Michael Crabtree was a regular on this site. Rumored webOS update dates and mock drafts don’t mean a thing.

Gotta hate it when those rumors dont pan out... but, in Palm's defense, they HAVE to get this paid app thing right out of the gate. Look at how bad the Blackberry's catalog was. People tried it that first day and it sucked. They never went back. If Palm's sucks day one, a lot of people will give up on it. No, probably not the people reading this post, but, the ones like my wife who would love a "must-have-app" but will gladly just accept the phone as a stable phone if the process of getting the app sucks.

Get it right Palm. Enjoy your stock valuations over the past two days.... keep the trend going (and tell Nokia to piss off!)

~Jason

Sigh, I'm not angry or mad, just waiting. After a year, if you add up all the time Palm spent on getting the iTunes sync worked out, I bet there will be enough hours there that Palm could have made their own desktop sync program. Sigh....

you are so right! they have a partnership with amazon....build and partner the Pre store within that or go with rhapsody (?) while i hard even use my ipod especially with the awesome music remix tool, it is not worth delays.

Mother F....while i want everything to be worth waiting for, this apple and itune thing i could care less about. just use double twist or the click and drag thing. why tell us less than one day till launch? "pout"

What the freak palm..I'm not looking to use itunes with my palm.. What the freak.......

To those ticked off about the iTunes fix

If you read the article, you will see that it only took them 2.5... !THAT'S RIGHT! 2.5 HOURS.... and only 5 minutes the time before that.

The iTUNES thing currently IS A NON-ISSUE of time/resource management.

I imagine the delay is more to do with the new App Catalog and getting that right. As people have said, if the App Catalog doesn't function properly, Palm could have a HUGE mess on their hands.'

Does the Delay suck if true, YES, is it in our best interest, Most Likely.

For now all we can do is wait and see. We can hope 1.2 brings us all our wants/needs, but most likely there will still need to be other updates and you can't please everyone.

eff, 1.2 and 1.21....what's it gonna be like when they come out with 2.0?....is that the new pre?....will it be pushed back every thursday as well?

If true, this is another huge mistake by Palm. They should have aleady released the bug fixes and feature updates independently of the iTunes and App Catalog changes. By unnecessarily entangling them, Palm has made us wait weeks for basic 1.0 features.

PAAAAALM!

#1 - Is it frustrating? Yes. Does it merit the profanity and false promises to leave Sprint/Palm? No.

#2 - Palm should reject the bid to purchase from Nokia and accept one from Apple: Apple is dictating Palm's business operations anyway.

No false promises here. Heading to T-Mobile tomorrow after 8 years on sprint. Tired of terrible service, both cellular and customer. The pré being the flagship smartphone doesn't help either. As I said in a previous comment, I want to love the pré so badly but android offers me what I need in a more effective package. G1 here I come. Enjoy your phone and keep growing guys, its been fun.

Hope that TMobile network works out for you. Best of luck.

Is there going to be an update for sure? Or is it a big rumor?

Is there going to be an update for sure? Or is it a big rumor?

Meh. It'll be nice if 1.2.1 squashes some lame programming bugs that should have been killed long ago. That's kind of what I expect. At this point I'm nonplussed.

The BIG update in my world will be 1.5 or 2.2 or 3.7 or whatever it takes to make the freaking CALENDAR actually work!!! I look forward to an update from Palm that makes it so I don't have to carry around a deactivated 4 year old phone PLUS my Pre just so I can enter appointments quickly, look things up quickly, have accurate repeating events, alarms that work, agenda view, and calendar pages that draw instantly!

I'm betting Palm's programmers have "fix the LAME Pre calendar" in their own Pre calendars and the alarms never go off or the appointments disappear altogether, so the calendar is doomed. ;)

Hehehehe!

"I look forward to an update from Palm that makes it so I don't have to carry around a deactivated 4 year old phone PLUS my Pre just so I can..."

1. "enter appointments quickly"
>Err..hitting the "+" in allows you to add a new appointment in under a minute?

2. "look things up quickly"
>While natively there is currently no Agenda view...there is an app for that ;) http://www.precentral.net/homebrew-apps/agenda AND using *singular* calendar view negates lag

3. "have accurate repeating events"
>I have multiple daily repeating meetings\events on my exchange calendar well into fiscal '11 and have no issues with repeats at all.

4. "alarms that work"
>See above. 90% of my repeating events have alarms and they fire each and every time (and LOUDLY much to my coworkers detest)

5. "agenda view"
>See #2 above.

6. "and calendar pages that draw instantly!"
>Use Outlook at work? Try adding just '3' of your colleagues calendars (that actually have appointments on them) and then switch from Inbox to Calendar view and tell me if it lags. No worries...it *will*. Why, because it is validating against the exchange server all appointments and updates to any appointments. How many calendars on your Pre? 4-5? What makes you think the Pre, (a PHONE) can scan, validate, and sync 4-5 calendars OVER THE WEB any faster? Want more speed? Use the INDIVIDUAL-view for the calendar you NEED versus ALL-view and see if your day to day refresh isn't < 3 seconds.

I use my Pre for work and I support 900+ servers and 3500+ users and it works well except for the battery life. The good news? My 3GS and Storm toting colleagues have the same issue. ;)

If its only push back 1 week that's not bad. Did Palm ever release a date for this update or was it from a leaked documnet.

It was a leaked document -- so technically it doesn't really count. However, right or wrong because of the leak expectations were set.

Say Palm gives out 2.1 and because SPrint didnt do their QC, it messes up NASCAR or SPRINT NAV, now you have a whole new group of people complaining. PALM invests 10 minutes in the ITunes fix. Most of you sit on the toilet longer!!!!....If you want a dependable calender, go to the drug store, buy one and hang it on the wall!!!....WHEN IT'S READY.....IT WILL BE READY!!!! In the mean time, go sit on the toilet and update your calender!!!! WHEW!!!!

i bet a developer made a calender app to fix yalls problems?

Hey guys... I got the perfect phone for everyone that's wanting to switch over. Its the Blackberry Storm. I promise you will never have to wait for updates, the browser is amazing, it never freezes up and the forum section on Crackberry is the most user friendly site to get anything you need. .............. JK. :) if you know what I'm talking bout then you will realize the palm Pre is a really great phone.

Can Palm just stop worrying about the damn iTunes sync and get the GSM version out the door first? I know it's really for free advertising but they need that to get more market share first... and my Centro is on its last leg. :p

this update needs to be released sooner rather than later. the performance issues are a serious issue for palm.

people are willing to put up with them for a while and with the expectation that they will be eventually addressed.

however, palm cannot rely on this goodwill lasting indefinitely. oh, and itunes blows. i don't do business with apple.

There are some serious performance issues throughout the OS. But we don't even know if this update will address any of those.

Agreed. Count to 10 and breathe. My goodness. Palm has made tremendous strides since releasing this device. They have to be competitive. Did you honestly think that they would just release the phone and just let it sit? Like any smart phone, it will require updates, patches, and new iterations of the OS. Growth is painful AND it requires patience. This phone has been out for a few months and look how far we have come. Also, look at how the community has come together to support the phone and ensure its success. If you are going to let a little update throw you off then perhaps you should go back to a simple flip phone. This is one of MANY updates that will come down the pike. With the Homebrew scene we have far exceeded anything that exist on the Windows Mobile side. I see that some people are stating that they wish to switch to the HTC Touch Pro 2. Guess what, genius... they are still on WM 6.1 and not 6.5 if you are using Sprint. Sounds like an update to me. :) We haven't even reached the sweet spot yet!

In all honesty, the phone shipped in pretty much the state it is today. While I agree that things take time, saying how far we have come is a little misleading, because not much has changed since June.

And another thing...the 'community' is going to amount to a hill of beans when it comes to ensuring success of this phone/OS. The majority of the users will not bother with homebrew, or tweaks/hacks to get what they need. Ultimately, the success of webOS will live and die by a seamless experience to purchase 3rd party apps, refinements in the OS/UI and carrier adoption.

If you think the 'community' can save anything, you're delusional.

Funny... the same was said of the iPhone when it came out originally. Savvy users and developers, large and small, found a way to make the phone their own. Apple eventually incorporated some of these ideas into the phone, even those that came from having to have the phone "Jailbroken". The iPhone is in its 3rd iteration incorporating many ideas from said "community".

And, I agree that the majority will not adopt Homebrew. However, Homebrew is just the embryo stage. This is where ideas come from. Applications will eventually make their way into the catalog, the OS and UI are being refined as we speak, and new carriers are picking up the Palm Pre.

If you think community has nothing to do with it...you would be sorely mistaken. Also, I would stay away from the stock market if you are going to make judgements based on 3 or 4 months of activity.

"I agree that the majority will not adopt Homebrew."

I think homebrew apps would gain more acceptance if the whole process of installing them was as simple as an OTA download, (ala the app catalog)

I understand that once it is all set up, the apps can be simply downloaded directly to the Pre, but in order to get to that point, there are potential problems that the average user won't want to, or can't, take the time to figure out. If this initial set up was totaly automated, use would increase quite a bit.

Once we can log on to PreCentral, go to the Homebrew section and download & install the apps OTA, then Homebrew will explode.

opps WAY off topic ....sorry, wheres that damm webOS update!! ;-)

I wouldn't mind waiting for the update if it weren't for the fact that I removed my tweaks a WEEK AND A HALF AGO in preparation for this damn thing. I want my tweaks back!

Then put them back. It's not THAT hard to undo them again.

That's really not the point. ;)

HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!! y in gods name is this soooooo important? this is the most dumbest reason to keep us in limbo! if they really like to lose custumers people this is the perfect way of doing so!
these people really just need to make their own damn syncing dodad and just keep it moving! as the days go by palm just does everything to annoy the life out of people!

triple confirmed lol

It is amazing the level of stupidity some mobile users have.
So some of you will leave SPRINT/PALM because an update is delayed? ARE YOU SERIOUS? As it stands right now the best feature match duo in the industry is SPRINT/PALM.

You get an awesome phone & company that gives you awesome deals on unlimited plans.

All of you considering leaving please do so. If an update delay is going to make you cry then by all means we dont need crybabys in our sprint/palm world. We need stand up figures.

When you do leave just consider your options.

Go to the iphone and spend 130+ a month. And remisnice of the times you had when you were paying less then 80 bucks a month for everything.

Or go to verizon and llook at their awesome phone selection.

Tmobile is a suitable candidate just dont get mad when your 3g speed defaults to edge because 3g in your area is not fully supported.

Some people really dont know when a good thing hits them.

With the Hero and Android, Sprint users will have another platform choice. This may hurt Palm with Sprint customers.

I am willing to bet 98% of Pre owners are not aware of this site and therefore have ZERO missed expectations of a release.

They find out about an update the day it becomes available and their phone is the one to tell them.

The new app catalog will be their next major new experience. It has to be spot on simple or they will become annoyed. Palm -- take the time you need to get this one right.

lmao, early adopters are very aware of the site. I would say 98% of Pre owners DO know about this site.

I respectfully disagree with you, no matter how hard you laugh your you-know-what off :-)

I know 3 other folks at my job who have gotten Pres, plus my wife. None of them were aware of this site until I brought it to their attention. They do not visit the site regularly. I am always bringing articles here to their attention.

They are all afraid to install homebrew apps for fear of violating their warranty and/or not having the energy to attempt it even after I explained it all to them.

The vast majority of folks are not like us. We are what is known as a vocal minority. The fact that this site attracts early adopters does not mean that all early adopters know of this site. My wife doesn't even know what an early adopter means. She just knows she has a new phone she loves.

The real problem here is Pushed (forced) updates. This is causing the problem forcing people to update within a couple days of release is not going to work and actually its making me a little PO. I understand eventually making people update BUT it needs to happen a good 2-4 weeks after the update is released. This would give us all time to remove any homebrew stuff, make backups, and install at our own leisure. IMO pushed updates need to wait at least a good 2 weeks before they are pushed.

You don't have to remove homebrew apps before a release. Only the tweaks/patches need to be removed. That takes just 5 minutes using the QuickInstall GUI tool with the majority of time spent rebooting the phone.

What are you backing up that you are afraid of losing due to an OS Update? Granted, it's probably a good idea even if the risk is low. Backing up a bunch of pictures and music downloads should only take a few minutes as well via USB.

Even so, your suggestion of 2 weeks doesn't seem unreasonable. You might be on vacation/holiday and not have access and/or time to do a backup

Exactly my point. You never know when you might need more time. We need a grace period, it's a must have!

I am a SR. QA Engineer for a media company. I work on software that is produced by the company. I know why things get pushed and as far as I am concerned this is probably a good thing. I would much rather have an update enhances my phone, over one that ends up breaking it.

IF the rumor is true, then the only thing that makes me sad about this is that I will be taking in my Pre on October 4th. I would have liked to have had 1.2 for longer to get a better idea of how the phone had improved. The reason I am giving back my Pre is because I want to try out the Hero for 30 days and then make my decision about what phone I will keep from there. Unfortunately I don't know if 4 days will give me enough time to soak in the new features.

Oh, and some of you people really need to get over yourselves. Threatening to get a new phone and leave Sprint because of an update is just stupid. If they released 1.2 today with bugs, you would be complaining and threatening to leave over that. Just be happy that Palm and Sprint are trying to put out a quality product. I wonder how many of you are going to cry and complain when video recording and SMS forwarding isn't offered in 1.2.

Geez. Palm is acting like a spoiled child with this itunes thing. Just get over it! The Pre has issues that are a lot more important than itunes sync they should be devoting resources to.

Please read the article. The title is misleading. They've spent a grand total of 2 hours and 35 minutes fixing iTunes syncing.

In return they've gotten thousands of dollars worth of free media exposure as well as sympathy by playing David to Apple's Goliath.

OMG!, when did Apple become a Goliath??? If it were an issue with the Pre not being able to mount to Windows as a USB device, then you could say Microsoft was Goliath. Palm sorta messed up promising itunes sync and then not being able to keep it working. Palm failed.

Haven't you heard?

Palm is the new Apple
Apple is the new Microsoft
Microsoft is the new IBM.

:-)
