Never underestimate the investigative search prowess of PreCentral members. Shadow-360 tips us to let us know that he's done some digging based off some information dropped by TopTongueBarry and the results bring us a sliver of hope that the full-touchscreen, slate-style, high-end halo webOS device we've been hoping for could indeed be a reality in the coming months.
It begins with TopTongueBarry, a self-professed AT&T IT employee who posted saying that not only has testing finished for the Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi Plus, but that testing will soon begin for a mystery device codenamed 'Elan.' That matches up well with previous forum sluethery, wherein ToniCipriani noted that May 10th looks like as good a date as any for AT&T to release the Pre and Pixi.
But back to that Elan. It's new to us and it was new to Shadow-360, who took to the Google and posted his results: Several accessory manufacturers had once listed devices as compatible with the Elan but since took that information down. TopTongueBarry also provided some hints: AT&T testing for the Elan should begin within about two weeks, scuttlebut within AT&T says that the device should have a 'soft keyboard,' be released in Europe initially, but may be made available unlocked in the US. All that points to a iPhone / Nexus One slate format, as does the fact that some of the accessories Shadow-360 tracked down were also compatible with the iPhone.
So where do we stand with all this hunting around? Either it's smoke and mirrors and Elan is simply another code name for the O8F-CASC / US GSM Palm Pre Plus or it's what Shadow-360 and TopTongueBarry suspect: something all-new and the most exciting thing going for webOS rumors given that Sprint's mysterious C40 still hasn't shown its face
Bonus rumor-mongering: Why call it 'Elan?' Well, another 'Elan' in the tech space is a Taiwanese company that sued Apple for multitouch patents. If this even comes close to panning out, that'd be schadenfreude-riffic.
Update: Soorma finds this site identifying the Elan with the Palm Pixi, in case things weren't muddy enough for you yet. Shadow-360 also found this site showing the same.

This is a very interesting article, I hope it's true!!
elan definition - distinctive and stylish elegance
This is so exciting!
Sprint better get this too :P
Verizon and Tmobile better get this also.
I'm taking this with a grain of salt for now. For starters I don't understand why an AT&T phone would initially be released in Europe...it makes more sense for it to be developed and released in the States first. Especially if it's going to AT&T.
Also, didn't Palm state they are only going to be making phones with physical keyboards or am I mistaken? This device does sound interesting but I will wait to see it and hear the specs.
Oh and in the second paragraph you wrote "beings" intead of what I presume you mean which is "begins".
Palm DID say that. But I don't think an on-screen keyboard as well is too far fetched.

Response from TTB:
My forum posting indicates a plausable scenario:
We'll soon be learning more about Palm's mythical 3rd WebOS device. AT&T will begin internal certification testing of the device (code named "ELAN") in two weeks, but this rumor leaves us with more questions that it answers.
Namely, the device is supposedly targeted for European release. If that's the case, why is AT&T set to begin its internal certification testing of the device ?? Could it be that Palm intends to directly market an unlocked GSM version in the USA?
If I remember correctly in the webOS dev oreily book written by a palm employee it states that developers should be aware that webOS devices might have different resolutions (this is now a reality with pixi an pre) and that having a phisical keyboard should not be taken for granted either. So while palm might prefer having phis keyboard, they still may launch one device without it if they think it makes business sense (I do prefer phis keyboard, but whatever).
About the thing about europe might come first, the fact that is bound to A&T in US doesnt stop a similar version to be launched in europe or anywhere else, obviusly without an AT&T branding.
Anyway they are only rumors yet.
Another step away from their roots, and another step closer to Iphone Jr. Release in Europe may be part of a promise to VZ that Palm would not release a new device for a specified time period in the US.
An all-new Palm device on AT&T sometime around May? This is exactly what I've been hoping for!!!

i hope people actually buy it.
Bring us more screen space as well as higher overall build quality. And bring it to Europe in due time, too.
definition of pre is beginning definition of elan is distinctive style or flair or to dart or dash
this is cool and all but were is the info on this c40...
Whether it's true or not, I'm glad to have my pot stirred!
It would be wise to launch a new device on ATT. Sprint has 4g as a stronghold for a new device also.
One thing about being down is you can only go up! This could all just be a stock play because Palm knows they have some badass shit to come...
Apparently people are unaware of AT&T's practice of renaming any phone they release in which they are not the first carrier. They have renamed every HTC WinMo phone they were not first to release and this will continue with WebOS. This allows every new release to say "exclusively on AT&T."
They do tweak the phones slightly, but they remain very recognizable as essentially the same phone.
I would guess this is the Pre (rather than the Pixi).
Apparently you've never heard of the Palm Centro, first released on Sprint, then on AT&T and finally on Verizon.
Palm products are different. Elan is almost certainly a new device.
HTC products have had a long and strange history. HTC manufactured phones for other companies and carriers long before they began marketing them under their own name. After they started doing that, some compaies, like AT&T and T-Mobile kept up the tradition.
Some HTC devices never got anything more than a generic model name from HTC. T-Mobile's Dash is referred to by HTC as the S620, it's internal code name being Excalibur.
I'm all for a little bigger screen (even though I like how the pre sits so comfortably in my pocket almost like the flip phones of back in the say) & a slate style phone but I just hope they keep the physical keyboard...with Palm hoping for a big release unlike the lasts I wander if releasing two phones @ or around the same time is a good idea!? Variety/Choice gives you more of a chance of getting more WebOS devices out in the market & also improves your chance of realing in new customer cuz now they can choose between a physical or onscreen keyboard or between two different form factors. Maybe the C40 & Elan are different devices!!? Well that outta entertain some imaginations for the next few months I know mine will this will be an interesting summer for WebOS!
I also heard about the Palm Zen. It suppose to have a 3.5 new HD screen with resistant finger print glass. It also suppose to use qual-processor,just like the up coming Iphone 4G. It also uses landscape keyboard slider,&Onscreen keyboard. 1080p video recording, new graphic chip,it suppose to be an Highend device. 8mega pixel back camera,& 5mega pixel front camera. It will house webOS 2.0 software, htc build quality. The new qual-processor, is like 3snapdragon in it,running@3 giga hilz. It will be super commuting fast.
That sounds like a phone ahead of its time right now. N prolly will cost $600+.... w/ contract.
I paid as much for the HTC Touch Pro2 and would pay the same for the Palm. I think we all would....
Palm, build something solid, even if it costs us another $50... maybe even $100. We'll buy it... Just build it!
And thanks for the updates..
And this is how you can tell this idiot is just a troll writing complete rumors/tales of fiction:
1. Apple holds patent for multi-touch GLASS screen sensors
2. If the phones had HTC build quality, the screen would crack and we would be charged $300 to fix it (i.e. Nexus One, HTC Dash, etc.)
3. NO such thing as gigahilz.. Probably thought gigahertz
4. Palm would not have an 8MP rear camera AND a 5MP front camera at this time.. MAYBE a 5MP back (if we're lucky) and MAYBE a 2-3MP front camera
Ummm... It couldn't be any more clear that the "troll" you're referring to was engaging in a bit of satire. Or did you think I found him serious? Did anyone, but you?
If anything, I think you two are more in agreement than not.
Once more, love the speculation...
No, I know for a fact he is lying. I did not believe anything he said, nor did I find him serious, but I guarantee there will be people complaining some rumor about this-or-that was not correct and Palm/Sprint/VZW/ATT/T-MO/O2/etc. lied.
YESSSSSS!!!! Nothing but good news for Palm! I just need a new 4G device on Sprint, period. If power will be an issue w/ that, I'll settle for 3G as the battery is already an issue and user my Overdrive for 4G.
Either way, I just need PALM to keep fighting and stay in there. GREAT (THE BEST) mobile OS, they just need that hardware up to par... HTC!?! If they were to buy Palm if it came to it... their hardware and webOS will take over the industry.
I'm still waiting for the Palm Pro, a business class Pixi-like device, that is slightly larger, with a powerful processor, double size battery, and extra durable.

You guys spelt my name wrong... :'(
I feel your pain. They missed out a - in my Username :P
A pure unlocked GSM phone would be wildly good news as it would allow developers to have access, but at the same time give Europe a lot of access.
I would be pumped if the "Elan" also turns out to be the C40 with WiMAX.
what are the chance that c40 and elan are sprint and att codenames for the same device?
What are the chances that Palm will launch on multiple carriers at the same time?
I don't have anything against slate phones, but i do like the flexibility given by having both a soft and hard keyboard.
I hope this device is all it'll take to get palm a leg up in the game.
/ramble
atleast SOMEBODY is thinking outside the box -___-
bigger screen with touch keyboard, please !
The rest of the world better get this too!
Elan means tree in Hebrew. Palm trees anyone?
If you say it with a accent, like 'e-laan", it means statement or declaration in Punjabi.... lol just to throw that in there.
It won't be the same device as the C40 because the networks are different.
Because Palm said last year they were dedicated to physical keyboards don't mean they haven't changed their mind.
I doubt AT&T are going to get a killer exclusive WebOS phone or tablet. After all that may cut into Apple iPhone/iPad sales.
besides you'd think a NEW WebOS phone would be a big deal. CES is done, GDC, probablt not, CTIA this month? I'll have my fingers crossed for 3day!
why does being on different networks mean that they can't be the same device. There are plenty of instances of a device working on more than one network.
Apparently you don't understand what the person is saying.
The C40 is for Sprint (CDMA technology) and the rumored Elon is for AT&T/Worldwide (GSM technology) and as such, CANNOT be the same device without one major modification (the communications processor).
Nonsense. There is absolutely no reason a phone can't be both CDMA (Verizon/Sprint) and also GSM (AT&T/TMobile). It just means having both hardware in one. And it would make a hell of a lot more sense from a design, inventory, and simplicity standpoint. Might cost an extra $10 or something per phone, but that is a VERY small price to pay on a $600 phone to have compatibility with everything in one model.
Well yes, it could happen and it should, but it won't.
It would work well because you could use it on Sprint/VZW here and put a European prepaid sim card in when you are on an international trip, for example.
FWIW, I spoke with an AT&T cust svc rep last week to drop a line from my family plan. She noted that my Treo650 was "eligible for upgrade" (duh!). I said I'd immediately upgrade to any Palm WebOS device available. She indicated that there's nothing now, but the Palm Pixie will be available in early to mid May. I asked if this would be the only device available and she said that's all that was showing for her. Let's just hope they're keeping the promised 2nd device a secret worth waiting for.
Having drooled after all you Sprint & Verizon people for almost a year, I'm REALLY looking forward to May.
+1
call me crazy, but I think that all the main US carriers (at&t, verizon, and tmobile) should get the pre plus and pixi plus in may, except vzw because it already has it (duh)
and I think that sprint should get the new palm c40/zen/elan/whatever the flip you wanna call em 4G devices, since it's the only US carrier that's actually almost finished perfecting 4G, plus lets hope they set that deal with walmart ;3
I'm sorry, but Sprint is long from "perfecting" 4G. They have a very small roll out still. They have to get it on phones still. and they have to somehow avoid WiMAX's bankruptcy still (I don't see it surviving through the 4G lifecycle).
Their window of opportunity is shrinking... when verizon and at&t roll out LTE, they will do it hard and fast.
I give you kudos. I suppose you're coming from a more reliabe source than I am. but you have to admit that sprint users should ATLEAST get the plus models as a sign of gratitude for being palm's guinea pigs per say and making us drool over VzW's awesome mobile hotspot app and centerbuttonless pre and wifi-enabled pixi, etc, after tasting webOS first.
ehh PLUS I wonder if, when 4G and LTE come out full throttle, sprint and vzw will make another agreement allowing 3G roaming on eachothers network. doubt it though. sprint and vzw already have a 1xRTT roaming pact (which btw TOTALLY saved vzw customers wednesday when vzw's 3G went down..)
and haha please, for all of you that think this Palm Elan is gonna be a slate sanskeyboard, you fail.
havent you learned anything in the past couple of years?
palm only makes phones with portrait physical keyboards. although it is a bummer that my year old centro can pop up a virtual keyboard, and not my 3 month old pixi -___-"
if it is going to be a slate, it'll probably be a next gen. of the TX, which I doubt because webOS is soooooo not ready for tablet use, and can hardly download from most websites, let alone download attachments.
This is a list of phones that fits this Body Glove holster. Obviously if it fits the Pixi and the Samsung Instinct, it won't fit the Pre. So this is NOT the Palm Pre. Could be another name for the Pixi. If it is new, it would be around the same size as the Pixi.
A slate means a virtual keyboard which would mean another WebOS update or a new version.
I'm due for a full upgrade on Sprint (thanks to being premier) so I really hope a new webOS phone comes to Sprint. WiMax would be awesome though I won't be getting it in my area for a while I'm sure.
I just want a bigger screen, super fast processor, and a slightly bigger physical keyboard. A Super OLED screen would be just fantastic.
An OLED would be great!!! But I don't see Palm putting it on their device's quite yet. A bigger Keyboard, or even better onscreen keyboard.
What was the Pre's codename before the reveal? Wasn't Pixi called the Elos or something?
Pre was Castle. Pixi was likely Eos.
ha, i think the code names are better than the names they chose!
I agree a new slate/full touch screen phone would really round out their portfolio of phones.
And I think they can even build on the Pixi form factor for that full-touch phone. From what I can tell, the build quality of the Pixi is much better than that of the Pre, due to the lack of a slider. And it's not bulky like the iPhone, so it'll still fit in the pocket nicely.
Maybe if they got rid of the physical keyboard on the Pixi, and they widened the phone just a tad, it'd make for a great full touch screen phone. Perhaps even a screen with better materials would make it really top notch.
omg i cant wait for webos to come to at&t. I have worries though, I hope they aren't just brining the Plus's to at&t; I hope its a new device. I used my friends palm pre and it was sort of laggy? I have been reading and some people dont mind but i would really like it to be snappy, is there going to be gpu acceleration or whatever? is that going to fix the laggy-ness?
When did you last play with your friend's Pre? Since 1.4 has been out, the snappy-ness of the phone has really improved. Might want to give it a try again. No GPU acceleration for the UI though. Maybe in a future update.
What i was asking is, is the gpu acceleration possible for the UI? And yeah i was playing with it again last night and when I opend up the camera app it was going crazyyyy. It even said he had too many cards open and there were only 3 or 4?
edit: i did tell him to restart it because i heard you should restart the palm pre every couple of days just to get a fresh start. I didnt try it after that.
i don't think there's any technical reason why gpu acceleration isn't possible for the UI, but its we've heard nothing from palm regarding whether or not it ever will be...
New hardware, more carriers and unlocked devices sold everywhere is a good sign.
And just compare your previous feature phone with webOS and then make a decision, or check out the other laggy, battery drainers out there...
How about the same form factor as the Pixi, but the physical keyboard is now virtual and acts as a gesture area at the same time with the option to enhance the screen size for surfing/gaming.
I never thought about that, but i'm certainly not opposed to it!
Different strokes for different folks. I hope those who want a different form factor can get it, but me, I'm happy. The Pre is the ultimate form factor me. I just want the specs bumped to current, a camera with a macro feature and a MicroSD slot.
Let's hope that sprint is getting something new too.
Has to have OLED and Snapdragon at least in order to compete in today's slate market.
I would just like Palm to give Sprint users upgrades too. I want them to do well so I am glad they are going to all providers. But don't forget the your hardcore fans that supported you from the beginning!!!!! I am willing to go through the trials of a first generation device, but only if we are not forgotten. If not I may consider a HTC Hero or Nexus One.
Just another BS rumour/myth. Palm is NOT going to build a device without a physical keyboard. Wish these rumour whores would just cool it.
Word to the wise, believe it when your holding it in your frickin hand.
Since this phone is similiarly named after Tiger Wood's wife, can we expect to have a feature that automatically hides text messages from certain people without a pass key?
I'm down for it.
+1
+1/2
tiger woods' wife = Elin Nordegren
If it's AT&T only, then it's hard for me to get excited about. It would be like the iPhone or the Nexus One or even the Pre Plus to me, interesting to read about but something I will never get because I have no reason at all to pay more for service/coverage that is not any better. Personal choice obviously. Hopefully it's a phone that helps saves Palm and gets more bad-ass phones on Sprint and elsewhere.
One other thing. Checked the dimensions for the phones visible in that phone case add....
Nokia e63 - 4.45 in. x 2.32 in.
Pixi - 4.37 in x 2.17 in
Samsung Access - 4.49 in x 2.28 in
Samsung Blackjack - 4.5 in x 2.3 in
My Elan prediction is easy then, roughly 4.45 in x 2.3 in. You guys can fill in what is in that space.
Could easily fit a 4" touchscreen... Doubt it'll happen though.
Assuming it is similar in the screen setup on the Pre (gesture area--duh, front speaker/sensor areas, etc.), it will be AT MAX a 3.6" screen.
That is assuming it is 1" for gesture, .5" for speaker/sensor area above screen, and combined 0.25-0.5" on the sides of the screen.
"schadenfreude-riffic". Excellent.
One of my favorite expressions!
Schadenfreude- n. Pleasure derived from others' misfortunes.
(Ex: "Ha-ha!" -Nelson Muntz from The Simpsons)
I'm holding out for the Palm Durkon.
well my treo pro quit charging about 10 days ago and I bought an HTC ATT Pure and now the rumors if correct point to a webos phone that might be very similar to the pure. Hopefully with a wider screen than the pixi and pre. That would be very nice but too late for me now. Stil, I'll be looking forward to seeing/hearing more about it.
Curious... Why use ATT instead of Verizon or Sprint? The only people I know who are on ATT are iPhoners and even they abhor the network.
Then you obviously don't know very many people. There are tens of thousands of Palm Centro owners who DON'T have an iPhone, DON'T want one, and actually DO like ATT enough to stay here. What we want is a WebOS device, and we ARE looking very forward to whatever this might be.
I am glad you like your network, whichever one that is; please don't make ignorant statements that imply the rest of us should not be pleased because we aren't on the same one.
Regarding the article update, the Pixi picture could just be a placeholder image until they get the real product image.
Not a bad idea.
I'm wondering: If we think Verizon has so far been a crappy partner with their lackluster release of the Plus models (and their salepeoples' apparent unwillingness to push the phone alongside Droids in-store), how will this AT&T launch be any different? Seems to me that in the AT&T scenario we've got the iPhone playing the part of the Droid.
I'm skeptical that AT&T's launch of webOS phones will be any different, any better, than Verizon's.
Agreed. if anything, it will probably be worse. The Pre on ATT will probably only appeal to those who are already on ATT and want a Pre but can't change carriers. Everyone else has surely jumped ship on ATT by now.
I'm pretty sure ATT has to pay Apple a % of it's income from Iphone contracts. That said wouldn't ATT love to sell the high cost voice/data plans it sells for Iphones to other customers w/o paying the apple tax?
I imagine customer comes in, I want an Iphone, cs agent says, before you jump in, check this phone out....
maybe Elan is just a Pixi with a more "butch" name. Maybe Luke Wilson doesn't wanna have 2 hold something called pixi in his next dumb commercial. How cool do you look to your guy friends when you are lloking up scores for the NCAA Tourney and they say "hey what phone is that?"
"uh, dude, that would be my pixi"
"your phone is called pixi?"
Oyeah man, it short for 'pixi of death'" or some other attempted cover.
not a bad idea to change name. My wife had pixi and I really liked it. Found overall usefulness impressive, ui was as quick as my Pre, and the 3G was so quick I didn't notice there was no wi-fi
elan isn't any better than pixi
Speak for yourself. I find the "Elan" name a LOT less de-masculating and toy-like than "Pixi".
Remember... Elan is still a codename. It could end up being the Pinkle for all we know...
Or to appeal to some of the "gangsta" teenagers, it could be the "Punka!" Wow, that would be the device :p
. <--- That's the grain of salt I took. Anyone else wanna take it?
I did take it with a grain of salt but my grain was bigger.

I agree with a redesigned pixi, either with no keyboard, or superslim slider. I love the pixi but hate the screensize. Plus they cut down on accessories costs due to no change in formfactor.

did any one notice than the name elan is the same name of a company that is sueing apple over multi-touch out of taiwan.it is said to have ties to palm so elan might a lil meaning. http://gizmodo.com/5203525/apples-legal-showdown-over-multitouch-begins-...
My suggestions are the following:
- a 4″ to 5″ (of course, capacitative touch-enabled) glass screen. No smaller than 4"!
- No hardware keyboard, or a separate model with one.
- Processor at least as powerful as the upcoming (not yet announced) iPhone
- Much enhanced battery life
- Proper amount of memory (at least as much as the latest generation high-end iPhones') (64 GB or more for the top-of-the-line model)
- Obviously, run WebOS
- Equally as arresting hardware design as that of the current models (the current Palm design team - both WebOS and hardware - comprises true aesthetics virtuosi! Just like those of Apple)
- Hardware quality on par with iPhone's and specs at least as good, ideally better
- Have (many) more applications available
- Be sold both via carriers & separately, and be SIM-unlocked
- Use SIM cards and have a wider distribution (including Benelux)
- I would gladly buy one if migrating most App Store purchases (3rd party software for iPhone) to WebOS was possible, ideally at no charge.
- Retention of affordable prices for 3rd party Palm applications
- Expansion of 3rd party Palm apps (to include TomTom, Navigon & many more applications)
- A glass screen! Similar to iPhones, but even somewhat larger. Not long and narrow, but larger.
- An integrated compass and a very accurate GPS module.
- Perhaps too much to ask now, but a case incorporating solar charger cells (akin to the idea “patented” by Apple. I think this mustn’t be a problem since solar charging panels are not Apple’s invention) would be very useful.
The WebOS blows anything else, even the iPhone (just) out of the water! However, all competition is very agressive (it is incomprehensible to me that Android, offering no vindicable comparison to WebOS, is becoming, strikingly, increasingly popular. What Palm has do is persuade a large portion of iPhone users and many Android users and those aiming at the upcoming WM7 devices, to go for Palm. That's possible only by both integrating revolutionary features (WebOS has managed very well in this respect!) and besting the competition in their fundamental forté-s (such as the amount of software for iPhone, or its generally excellent keyboard, build quality, or Nexus One and the HTC Touch HD2 - in terms of its screen size, etc.).
no
Palm needs to do something quick. Their stock price has been so horrible these last few days. They really need some good news because if their stock continues to drop, it looks like they are almost certain to be acquired. It's trading now at a 52-week low, and will probably go even lower by week's end.
i hate to say this prior to the Pre coming out last year, that was the name of the Pixi originally. but it is great news it will be a gsm phone. i cant wait to see what is the C40...that is a mystery.
