Rumor: European release of webOS 1.3.1 imminent (Updated)

O2 Twitter update

We’ve been expecting that Europe would get ‘parity’ by the end of November, and that doesn’t give Palm much time to get it done. If you follow the O2 Pre closely, last night was a confusing period for Palm Pre owners in Europe, with an official O2 Twitter account stating that webOS 1.3.1 would come last night and then it was “delayed” for unspecified reasons.

While Nexave.de forum moderator Deerhunter couldn’t offer a concrete reason for the delay, he did offer some insight into what may have happened. Essentially, the updates that Palm puts together have to be first verified and approved by the carriers. This is standard practice across the globe and likely the reason we were not supposed to see webOS 1.3.1 on Sprint Pre phones until after the Pixi’s release.

Anyway, back over in Europe the 1.3.1 update was apparently approved by O2 Germany and somebody at the carrier's Bielefeld shop decided to run with it, even though it hadn’t been approved by the rest of the Telefonica network. That’s the trouble with running a multi-headed beast like Telefonica: there are at least four separate entities that need to approve the update (O2 Germany, O2 Ireland, O2 UK, and Movistar Spain).

Either way, the approval was revoked or silenced in some manner and as I’m sure you folks in Europe have noticed, you’re still not running webOS 1.3.1. No matter the cause, we are fairly certain you that the release of webOS 1.3.1 to GSM Pre phones is imminent, and we’ll be sure to let you know when it finally lands.

UPDATE: KarlD89 points us to a new post on the O2 Twitter feed claiming that webOS 1.3.1 will be coming to O2 Pre phones on November 23rd. We shall see.

Thanks to gizmo21 for the tip!

im just glad to use the Canadian Bell version instead of that "allways-one-step-behind" stuff that our german carriers provide, though they are pretty fast with the pre.But it was the same with Windows Mobile on O2 here in Germany, i had to get the english versions of Windows Mobile (6.5 in the end) while O2 i still on 5.0

Pls Pls Pls Pls with ICQ :(

Id be very surprised if Palm does ICQ support. That sounds like more of a 3rd party app solution.

just checked it... it was postponed to monday the 23rd... *sigh*

Correct...according to this.

Babelfish translates it as

#WebOS the update for #Palm the #Pre is to the 23.11.2009 presumably starting from Monday, at the disposal.

1.3.1 has one thing of interest: a slider on the Music app.

This is bull... apparently O2 Germany fought for it, but the rest of the Telefonica carriers were, I don't know, sleeping?? Come on, we are on 1.1.3 !! Think about it. I'm dealing with bugs every day, most of them in the calendar.

This is not bull... this is Palm-Management. We Germans don't need Dealers for Bugs, we need WebOS1.3.1. So we have 6 Hours to get it today, until then we waiting longer. So what is...any better suggestion? Don't talk about Put US-WebOS on your Pre", this is impossible for NON-itryanythingFreaks. :-(

No it's not Palm-management, it's Telefonica-management obviously.

yeah yeah terrible situation...

i want to clean to 1.1.3 (now i have 1.3.1 Spring).

But a few ours before the Update should come...STOP... everything back.. no Update is coming... maybe next week or so...

Or like the 1.2.1 ... maybe never.

I just went into an 02 store to buy a touchstone and just asked when it was coming. The guy said january...he also said there'd also be 1000s of apps coming so I think I'll ignore him as he's obviously deluded and wrong.

sounds like he is talking about the app catalog coming out of beta. He sounds like the typical store rep. They have no idea.

I have a N00b question here, feel free to laugh at me, but I wonder if I import a German Palm Pre GSM phone but use it on a Swedish Carrier, how does this affect getting access to the updates? Do those using other european carriers get these updates?

Thanx for your help!

No you shouldn't have any problems. With the 1.3.1, you will probably be able to enter the APN settings for your carrier. Updates should come through just fine.

he still needs to get it though ;)
but wifi shouldn't be a problem

Ah, that's right ^^ Wifi it is then ;)

If every European pre user would install a North American rom and update the App Catalog to the last WR version, half the messages in this forum would become redundant.
One year from now North American pre-ers will be enjoying 1.4.1 or even 1.5.1 while Europe's still choking on 1.3.1 (which is really not that extremely different from 1.2.1). Just imagine: the same messages as there are now, just with different version numbers...
;)

One year? I don't think I could wait that long. The difference between 1.1.3 and 1.3.1 was that much as far I as I am concerned.

We're still in beta app store here in Europe. Truely depressing
