Ubiquitous open standards software/patch/theme installer Preware, which is developed and maintained by the enterprising developers over at webos-internals, has received support for multiple OS versions in its latest update to 0.9.5. The new version of Preware automatically selects the webOS-patches feed to match the running version of webOS (the GSM variant of the Pre currently runs 1.1.3, as opposed to 1.2.1 on the CDMA version), which ensures that any patches you install are compatible with the version of webOS that's running on your device.
Thanks to everyone that sent this in!

Great job!
just installed this week on my UK pre (1.1.3) and it works a treat! Great job....
This is great news because when 1.3.1 comes out we don't have to question what works and what doesn't.
oh thats reeeeeaaaalyyy nice... now I can patch my 1.1.3 GSM Pre... or should I just wait until the update?
(not rethorical ;) )
Hopefully we will get 1.3 with the Pixi release on the 15th, but I don't know if that is global. I would not do crazy patching yet. But the patches are much easier to back out than they used to be when you were manually editing a text file on the device. :)
does this mean i won't have to uninstall the patches before updating the webos?
These guys at webos-internals are just unbelievable! Palm creates a mishmash of versions, and they just provide a solution. Mucho kudos to Mr. Whitby and crew.
Yeah. The people behind WebOS Internals are insane at allowing so much customization.
I can't imagine having 3x3 icons, for example. It seems so old.
Thanks A LOT to them!
I agree, 3x3 icons is so 5 months ago ;-)
ha ha totally.
yeah i totally miss the tweaks right after updates. the 3x3 icons is the biggest cause it's the first thing i notice when i look at the screen. when it ain't their i totally notice. not a big thing but it's like my favorite tweak.
Yes, Preware is very well done. Keep it up guys!
hmm?
doesn´t work for me.
having 1.1.3 it still shows all patches.
opened preware, it updated feeds and i checked via help which version i got. told me it´s 0.9.5.
iam i doing anything wrong?
You need to have version 0.9.16 of the Package Manager Service installed, and you need to update your feeds after it is installed for it to list the correct set of patches.
There are quite a few 1.1.3 patches in the feed and we're working on 1.3.1 patches too.

the people at webos internals really don't get there proper due..
If palm were smart they would contact the developers at webos internals and collaborate.. And who knows, maybe they have.. Either way they have done sooooooo much for webos..
PLEASE DONATE if you haven't already.. I will be giving $10 asap for everything they've done.. Even though $100 is what I probable should be giving..
thank you webos interals..
You guys ROCK... Much love to you guys behind Preware and Webos Internals.. Without you guys.. We would be crying about what the Pre doesn't do. I get fussed at by my wife for not keeping her Pre up to date as mine...
But hey.. I love it...
Keep on doing what you do.. And we lay people will keep on singing your praise.....
YOU GUYS ROCK....
For clearification.....I have version 9.5 running on webos 1.2, so does this mean when 1.3 comes avalible I don't need to uninstall my 30 some odd patches?
It always advised to remove all patches and themes before upgrading webOS.
Preware will then tell you which ones are safe to reinstall after the upgrade (note that if the Palm application source code changes with the update, then the patch has to change to match - that is why you need to remove the old patch first, then upgrade, then install the new patch which matches the new Palm code).

Um, so where exactly is 0.9.5? I always end up with links to 0.9.4, on the precentral page as well as via webos internal.
Welcoming any hints...
EDIT: Ok, so you download 0.9.4 and the upgrade/install the package manager from inside the app (for which you might have to unplug the device to see the update when connecting via 3G, since in that case you will not have a network otherwise) and then update preware itself. Just in case anyone else stumbles upon this.
ok so how would I go about upgrading the preware? Do I just update the preware through preware or is it more involved? Hopefully somebody could assist me, thanks.
As specified in the Upgrade section of the Preware documention (first hit on Google for "Preware"), just use Preware to upgrade Preware.

So do I still have to remove all patched before I update from webOS 1.2.1 to 1.3.1?
yes you should. I Asked the same questiion and Rod gave a straight forward reply. It would be nice to not have to, but such is life
This works great! Thanks.
Now I want to install it on my son's Pre when he has a 2 hour layover at the airport.
I know I need to bring my laptop (which has been used to put Preware on my phone). But could someone point me in the right direction for what steps I need to go through?
Thanks very much.
This should also work even if we can't get online at the airport right?
Thanks!
so still confuse wid all the preware stuff..if i got preware on my pre..do i always do the package update?..
You should do the package update. You need to have your pre connected to you computer and using WEBOS Quickinstall
Shoot. So if I just updated the package manager and the program from within itself without being connected to the computer, did I just botch something?
yeah right!
You guys are true rockstars
