If there’s one place that prudent consumers turn to for reviews of anything and everything, it’s Consumer Reports. The organization recently released their annual top products list, this year composed of 398 items, and ranked among the best smartphones was a familiar face: the Palm Pre. It should come as no surprise that the Pre is considered to be one of the best phones on the market, and on CR’s scale it ranks right up with the latest iPhones and Android devices.
On the CR scale, the Pre scored a 67, though given that they are still quoting the $200 sale price we have to believe that the score is the value assigned at launch and that the Pre would garner a few more points now after having scored some updates and apps. Similarly, the BlackBerry Curve 8900 on T-Mobile also scored a 67. With the exception of the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 on Sprint (and from 2006), the dozen smartphones in CR’s Best Products list all scored between a 63 and a 73, putting the Pre solidly in the middle of the pack. The high scorer was as you can imagine the iPhone 3GS, but after two years of revisions and a zillion apps it’s hard not to give it a high score.
We’ll be sure to check back here next year to see where the Pixi and what we hope are more webOS devices land.
Thanks to Cluckie for the tip!

Let me mark it in my Pre's calendar so that next year on this date I come back to Precentral.net and check on the Pixi's score. Hopefully by then I will be able to customize my alert sounds.
Forget that right now, 1.3.1 is HERE!
Good grief, if Consumer Reports is still quoting the $200 price, it really makes me wonder how lead time affects their other stories ... I say this as someone who is familiar with print journalism.
Storm 1, G1, and Omnia 1 scored higher than the Pre!???? And as was said before, at the $200 mark?
I can't stand Consumer Reports. Bunch of old dudes who take too long to release information and their opinions are skewed. haha
Consumer report's reviews seem to target the elderly users. Their phone reviews moan about things that younger users wouldn't care much about.
I have the 'pleasure' of reading the magazine every time it's published (my grandmother-in-law is a subscriber) and find myself disagreeing with the majority of their reports.
