For a long, long time now, Kevin over at CrackBerry.com has been telling me that he has a nickname for people that are going to switch to the Pre: Pre-Jects. Later on, he thought Pre-Verts might be a little better. Either way, he's gone public with his smacktalkin' ways and is joined by Rene Ritchie of another sister site The iPhone Blog. Seriously, the two of them have conspired over the weekend, apparently, springing this on us in tandem.
So do we take this lying down? Can we come up with another moniker for ourselves that's not so, erm, hateful? I'm fond of PreFects myself: it's one letter off from perfect and wacky Ford auto references aside, the "In Charge" connotations seem to do it up right for Pre users. Another option: PreCepts: we perceive what will happen before it does and also set down the authoritative rules of smartphones.
What say you? Got a better nickname for future Pre Users? Let us know in the comments. Better yet, let us know on twitter and be sure to include those crazy kids @crackberrykevin and @reneritchie know that we'll not take this trash talking lying down.
What do to with the terms PreVert and PreJect? I think:
- PreVert: A CrackBerry user who has a secret lust for a Palm Pre
- PreJect: An iPhone user only rejects the Pre because of his rampant Apple fanboyism.
If you think of it that way, the image at top starts to make a little more sense, no? Ok Ok, we're all having good fun here, so no need for us to get THAT catty. Seriously -- what do you think a good name would be?

I like Pre-Fects. Lets go with that.
Pre-fered
I'd rather be a pre-anything than an iTard anyday.
Pre-chers (like preachers).
Pre-iPhone. You'll get there eventually; you're just taking a detour.
Oh my, you know Pre-news is suffering when... Pre-haps Palm should release some real news to keep the Pre-Hype from becoming the Post-Hype?
Good:
- Prefects
- Preferred
- Prevolved
- Prelite
Bad:
- Pretards
Pre-dator: an animal (device) that lives by killing and consuming other animals (iphones and blackberries).
PrePle - Pre people!
Preeks - Pre Geeks!
Seriously... we must all be dying for this damn device if this is what we are doing with our time!!!
Don't get me wrong, I want it as much as you, but come on now, this is just sad.
While I bang away at my awful VZW BB Storm, I daydream about my new Sprint Palm Pre that will arrive in, er four mother f***ing months!!!! #$&^$#%&**@&*#
It is so uncool how they teased us in January and nothing overly exciting since then. Gee, did anyone notice a new case on Palm's site??? Funny thing, I would buy the accex if they were out now. So sad...
Maybe PreOccupied is more appropriate!
I'm pretty sure that they premiered the device in January in order to do it in front of the largest audience possible at CES, not to tease us unnecessarily. They've always said first half of the year, even when I was in the "Private" demo room. Also, at that time, they were honest by saying that the phones in the room were running on wifi and not cell service. Obviously, at that time there was still work to be done on the integration with Sprint. Someone below is right though in wondering about the next devices... Can you believe that this is the first device using this new OS? The second generation phones should be unbelievable!
OMG, this made me laugh out-loud, I swear!
Also, here's a nod to the "Pre-cher" suggestion.
"Pre-dator" wouldn't work because that's a visual joke.
how about GrandPres
Ohh! I like this, too. Perhaps it should be reserved for those who achieve great things with their Pre's.
Pre-determined
Pre-decessor
Pre-ordained
Pre-disposition
Pre-funwithathesaurus
As someone who would have gone for the Pre if Limp hadn't picked it up in the US (good luck getting even the clock function included!), and a recent recruit into the Order of the Blackberry, I have to take a smack shot and suggest
Pre-Nuptials, cause if you're on Limp you're gonna wish you'd read the one they made you sign and added a 'no kinky sex' clause. Cause you're gonna get [redacted].
But seriously, I can't wait for see how the Pre handles after the launch. I can only wish everyone the best of luck on the road to smartphone evolution.
At least we're both kicking the iPhone's ass, right?
We are all Pre-Tenders until any of us actually get one.
I love the Pre-Tenders!
Does anyone know what "pre" means for Palm? Or did they just come up with that while sitting in the board room for the past 2 yrs waiting for the iphone to become "pre-historic"?
Idunno. But the name makes me want to wait for... whatever. The Palm [BLANK]. Or maybe the Palm Post. I guess they'll be rolling out the Post by the time I'm due for a handset upgrade.
Ohh based on that maybe we all should go with Pre-Cogs like in Minority Report!!! Pre-fect is good too although it makes me think of harry potter.
My first thought when I read prefects, was Harry Potter. I mean, if you all want to be thought of as children playing with wands and believing in magic, be my guest ; )
I think you're right on with PreFects, with the exception that it should just be PreFect.
Pre-tty please release it already!
Pre-mies because this is all PREMATURE until the phone actually SHIPS! ;)
I don't see why people can't be a little more cheeky, and a little less serious. PreVert is a good one.
If I were in the market for the Pre, I would call myself a PreVert. But alas for others, that would require people to lighten up.
C
How about Pre-cocious? (especially since the device isn't even on the market yet) I'm anxious to see the Pre in use and I'm still a Treo user. However, I can't seriously consider the Pre until I see it in use and compare it to updated competitors likely be released around the same time. The evolution of software for the Pre and the financial hardship of Palm/Sprint will be big determining factors of Pre success as well.
Pre-dator-1
PRE-MINATORS!
PRE-MATURES
PRE-LONGING !!!!
Pre-possessing
How about pre-release meaning they need to release it. or grand pre sale
I don't beleive that I read this post. Maybe we need to start getting Pre-occupied with something else
PreCog - Have an innate understanding regarding the future of mobile computing.
What about "People who don't have to think of childish ways and revert to name calling to put others down for having things that are better than ours" Yeah. I think that works.
prefect sounds more like defect lol!
I like PrePle. A Prefect is something we had in boarding school, they weren't fun to be around (especially when smacking your knuckles with a ruler) and they certainly knew what you were up to. What we were up to was very juvenile, just like the name-calling that started this entry.
I think this is a bit pre-posterous. :-)
I like Prevert as I will P-Revert back to to the Treo Pre when it comes out. My interim PDA is an iPhone and there has to be something better.
PRE-gnant.. lol!!
It's precocious of those other sites to think that we're preamplifying the hype of our precious Pre, but again our predictions are premature, and it's likely that many will be predisposed to be preemptory preinitiation.
But of course those predicated to prejudge the Pre are automatically prejudiced against the preeminent premium phone. The premise of this premonition is predilection on the basis of a premier device that will make those other phones look prehistoric in their presence.
But us Pretenders or Preppies, will be predictably predatory in our preference of the Pre's preexistence. Alas this presence could preen on much longer in his prescription, but still even he has to present that he should preserve his preference for Palm's Pre.
Presto! Your preliminary presentation or preamble, though premeditated and slightly precluded by some of Palm's press, is the precise prerequisite prescribed to prevail until the pre-order of Palm's predominant Pre.
Pre-fect is it. Haven't read a better idea.
The problem is that regardless of what we want, PreVerts will probably stick. I know some don't like this, but we can turn it into a positive by accepting and merchandising it.
Joshua from engadget just showed the pre to jimmy fallon boy was he excited
I'd call you all 'PRE-cious'.
Longingly waitng for your phones to never arrive (its just precious).
I also liked someone elses 'PRE-tards'. Sums you all up doesn't it?
I vote for "pre-cummers" :D
How about Give me death or give me Preedom! :D
This describes the market after the Pre ships and dominates: Pre-Owned. Or as the kids say: Pre-Pwned.
Pre-verts is better than Pre-fects. The latter does sound a lil too much like "rejects." That'd make more sense if we despised the Pre.
I have a word for Blackberry and iPhone owners...
...Jealous
PRE-mature
pre-cipients
pre-sentists (look it up)
pre-sters (works by itself but also has interesting defintions)
pre-sumers
pre-torians (if you like history)
pre-vailers
the preved
pre-oholics
I kinda like "Pre-torians." I don't care for "pre-fects."
I have the "pre-ver"
For all the Pre-ngle Ladies out there, my wife came up with: Pre-Madonna.
Dieter - I love it - both the name for us and the names for the Crackheads and Applesauce brains.
Keep up the good work!
