Palm's New Pixi Ad: First Look!

[YouTube Link]

Here you go, folks, Palm's new ad campaign for the Pixi, or at least the first commercial in it.  They'll start airing it Monday, the day after the Pixi launch. We're digging the overall concept of your social life getting enabled by your phone, digging that they give Tweed some face time, and digging that they've replaced 'creepy' with 'fun.' Definitely a new direction from the previous ads and though we will miss some the esoteric charm of the old ads, this feels more human.

If you're digging the music, you should know that it's "Sleepyhead" by Passion Pit. So, what do you think, will it work for Palm? More importantly, will it bring on those new smartphone users Palm is targeting with the Pixi??

I like it. It's still a little off, like the old ones, but this one is less creepy and more interesting. I'm not sure if I like those strange camera cuts when people are moving. they should be level IMHO

I wish the Pre's o/s was that animated and lively. But, our friend's addresses change automatically. I guess that's something.

Wow, I do NOT share your opinion! Nothing OFF about this! I freakin' LOVE this ad & the new direction!!! This is what they need to switch Pre ads to as well!!!!

That commercial gave me vertigo... I like the concept of POV shots, but don't think it should so so rapidly cutting to a new shot. Much better than the Pre commercials, though.

muuuuuuuuuuch better than the Pre commercials...the music was kind of annoying though I thought...whatever, this phone is cool.

WORLDS BETTER THAN THE PRE COMMERCIALS! i feel this is going to push palm over the edge. it appeals to everyone. kids, adults, teens, its great!

SOOO MUCH BETTER THAN THE PRE COMMERCIALS. Please Palm....change the Pre commercials to something like this!

you tube link on the bottom is broken. Can't watch on my pre

sometimes YouTube takes some extra time to encode the mobile version

Awesome song with an awesome commercial for an awesome phone on an awesome operating system.

LOL. I wondered the same thing

Good ad... but why did they rotate the phone when that video of the flower is playing? It's not like it changes orientation or anything

LOL. I wondered the same thing

Great, so much better, this appeals to my age group for sure! 18-34 and beyond I am sure !

True. I'm a senior in high school and I assure you that this will attract younger people. Palm needs to do this for the Pre too.

I agree, I'm also in high school and this would really get young people's attention. The pre commercials were just boring, other than the facebook sprint commercial.

Ooof, kind of made me dizzy, and I thought the music was a little annoying, but at least the Pixi is front and center. And at least the people in the ad are mostly attractive. That helps mucho.

>> And at least the people in the ad are mostly attractive. <<

LOL that is the funniest thing I read all day. And true. I wonder what creepy girl must think about this all...

And they are smiling, laughing and happy looking. I have only one word for the Pre commericals. "Scrap"

Heh, I have the Pixi :P and I haven't seen the commercail =\

How did you get it?

I got a Pre yesterday and the power button jammed. I got a replacement this morning and the keyboard started to have jammed keys. No, I'm not heavy on the buttons.....

Anyways, the store went to replace with another Pre and oops!! It was Pixis in the case and no Pres. Sprint was awesome and let me go ahead and get the Pixi -- before the release. I <3 Sprint!!!

And right now, I'm installing 1.3.1!!! Let's see what features are in there in the next 20 minutes \o/ I cant' wait to see text forwarding!

so....what store is this at?? I think I need to visit them!!! hahaha

I would LOVE a Pixi except for the fact that it has no Wifi!! I...need...wifi!!!

I don't get the big fuss on wi-fi not being on the Pixi. You have to have a Everything Data plan to operate the phone and that INCLUDES unlimited internet. Adding a wi-fi option is basically duplicating web access.

O_O 1.3.1 just finished the install!!! Time to test the txt forward....

ZOMGWTFROFLBBQ THIS IS FREAKING AWESOME!!

NOT only can you forward SO easy, you can send to multiple contact SO EASY!!! To forward, just touch the message and the menu pops up. Hit 'forward' then the screen changes and you see the box for the name you want to send to. Hit the contact icon on the right to select someone. Hit it again for the next person.

<3<3<3

THANK YOU PALM!!!!

Oh, that was a picture mail I forwarded out, not once, but TWICE to 10 different people who are probably hating me for sending that near midnight :x

Wait wait wait... you can send to multiple contacts that easily? On the Pre, we still have to use universal search or scroll through the contacts... is that what you do? Or is it different?

There are places where Sprint data reception is limited or absent - like my home (on the Pre, anyway). Wifi's also faster.

The list goes on and on.

Don't you have internet at home? :P

Sorry, I just don't miss it.

Sometimes, I use my WebOS device at home and it's to have net access on it at those times. The point is that there are many reasons for other people to use their phones differently than you do.

The commercial runs way too fast to comprehend what is going on. I missed Tweed the first 2 times I viewed it, but I have been drinking...

i missed tweed until you just said that ROFL !

Hate the music myself, but it's a great ad, especially compared to the Pre ones. Perfect for the market they're going for.

Much better... but then again the bar had been set pretty low with the Pre's ads. Though I thought this ad devoted a surprising amount of time on the picture viewer, which is one of the Pre's weak points.

I have high hopes for the Pixi. I love my Pre and webOS... more users on this OS can only be good.

That commercial is exactly what palm should be making. If that commercial was made with a Pre and some Vampire Weekend or the new Coldplay it would be a killer ad.

Great (Pixi)commercial, (hip and trendy) Palm should now create commercials like this for the Pre. I hope this is a sign of better things to come.

Much better! I'm glad they learned from their failure with the Pre commercials and made a huge improvement with the Pixi ones.

I think the music is alright but let's face it the pre and the pixi are going to sell themselves by word of mouth....

YES! This is the kinda commercial Palm should have started out with for the Pre. It kinda makes me want to switch over to Pixi... Not really, though.

So I guess the Pixi's for young, hip, trendy types that listen to indie music, whereas the Pre is for creepy people who compliment jugglers' ball-handling skills... Great.

No, Palm wanted to elevate the Palm brand with the previous commercials, not sell more Pre's. If they did sell any Pre's with those commercials, it would be purely incidental. I believe that their plan was to raise capital, beta test, and build infrastructure while with Sprint, and then do a real rockstar release next year after their exclusivity runs out. I expect that they are saving lots of the big stuff for then, and that come January all the headlines will be about the Pre.

Great ad BTW!

Great commercial!! But if they really wanted to sell the Pixi they would've focused more on the guy with the beard. You know, because the beard is a symbol of power and accomplishment.

LOL and as a guy with a beard, +1

LOL. They need to get me in there too. :)

Excellent. If I didn't have a Pre, I would certainly be curious about the Pixi now. Have to figure out a way to keep these commercials from my wife. I doubt they'll allow the Pixi on a SERO plan.

"Speed adjusted for demo purposes. Performance may vary."

I'd say. Good commercial but I might be disappointed if the phone didn't perform somewhat like this.

But everyone shortens transitions, right?

At least Palm learned one thing from the German launch.

Still don't need all the people. Focus on the phone.

I'm GenX, a few years past the target demographic, but I think the ad works. This ad says social networking and speed. The next ad should feature the phone more, particularly webOS. Despite the Pre rollout, many people still don't understand what's revolutionary about webOS. Probably because the Pre ads didn't tell them. I still don't know what the Pre ads said.

"Required data plan not included, unlimited plan strongly recommended."

Does the mean you do not need an everything plan for the Pixi like you do for the Pre?

You will need the Everything Data plan.

I think it's appealing. Now make another one for the Pre please. =)

Grooveshark has better Fidelity: http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/song/Sleepyhead/21966741

I really enjoyed the ad. Its fun and manages to generate curiosity and interest in the OS, which is what you should shoot for in a 30 sec spot, IMHO.

+1 on the Grooveshark. LOVE that site.

Thanks for the link! As someone morally opposed to illegal downloads, free music streaming seems like a great solution. I think at some point I'd been directed toward this site in the past and totally forgotten about it.

This commercial is infinitely better than the "Pre Girl" ads. Seeing hip young guys handling the phone goes a surprising way towards removing any stigma I felt around the name initially.

I wonder what this will do to change the mind-share that Palm occupies right now. Working as a cellphone salesperson at a store that carries every major Canadian carrier, the Pre dummy phone we have seems to get the most attention from preteen girls.

"we will miss some the esoteric charm of the old ads"

I know irony doesn't really translate in print, but to be sure, ARE YOU FRAKING KIDDING ME?!?!?!?!?

Imagine how many Pres would've sold if a stupid, up-their-own-arse Palm didn't let the stupid, up-their-own-arse ad agency run stupid, up-their-own-arse ad after ad after ad featuring the creepy albino girl going "Bing! Bing! Bing!" and talking about how her phone reads her mind. FAIL!!!!

think you meant to say sarcasm, not irony. Two completly different things. But yeah, gotta agree with ya'.

Wicked cool!!! This is too cool to see this and hear my cousins' band ( [Passion Pit] Michael Angelakos is my cousin)

YAY Passion Pit ROCKS!

Ha that's funny! I was looking all through here to see if anyone would mention them. I love Sleepyhead!! This is much better than the freaky Pre commercials.

I was actually listening to passion pit when I saw this. I actually started to mess up my itunes because I thought it wasn't paused, and hit "track forward" instead. :)

Anyway, this ad campaign is much better and somewhat reminds me of the POV pre ads from O2. Plus they both incorporate great music.

It's better than that creepy girl from the Pre ads that equal FAIL. I still think Palm can do better with their marketing but this is a better start.

quote from Palm PR:

"In the ad, you’ll see that Palm Pixi plays a role as an exciting, relevant product for people who care about staying connected, having fun, and never missing a thing. The message is clear—Palm Pixi is made by people, for people. And it’s quite clear that with our, new marketing leadership we’re moving in a different direction from our previous ads, and from other smartphone competitors.

This is a much better ad. Not crazy about the music, but the ad is very high energy, and it looks like part of an active, mobile lifestyle. Big improvement.

this new one looks pretty cool (back case really only)
well i made the mistake already buying the palm pre
i actually kinda HATE IT!
any suggestions?
i wasted my money on this thing and now i dont know what to do with it
i barely touch it it was confusing getting the thing in order at the beginning and then the phone broke so i had to get a replacement after 3 days and now i have the second one and its slow as hell not to mention the bunch of little things it does here and there that annoy the hell outta me (crashing, battery life, heating) even on a simple phone call i hate it. so i decided not to do more then text and talk on the dam thing which is pointless cause im paying for a data plan....
waste waste waste.

If you're within your 30 days, ask your local store if you can change it for the Pixi on the 15th (release date). They're the same price, so it would be an even exchange.

go complain to some one who cares. Return it and shut up about it. I don't really care about you hating the phone.

so how smart do you look saying you dont care about someone ranting about something they dont like and your commenting them? as i read that comment wasnt targeted to you. he simple seems fustrated the phone isnt as good as id thought it would be too.

If you seriously want to get a pixi instead, name your price for the pre

Wait, are you saying that you can't figure out how to use the phone, and yet you went ahead and named yourself "palmpreee234".

Pro tip: Turn off GPS location services except upon request. This was absolutely destroying my phones battery while I was at work, because it could not get a lock inside.

Pro tip#2: Don't leave your cards open when you're not using the phone. If you leave a YouTube video in card view while not in use, your phone will turn into an actual hot potato.

Pro tip#3: Screw Synergy. If you're not an avid facebook user or whatever, don't even bother. Half my contacts when I moved them over were just birthdays, wouldn't let me delete the contact, so F that.

Other than that I don't know what to say. I've always found my Pre to be great for voice calls, clear on both ends of the conversation.

yeah i did all that and i even had it replaced twice i really like it at first but its fustrating and i realized that the screen is just too small to be a touch for me,keyboard is nice tho. i never a bunch of cards open but its slow as hell to me i guess thats an opinion it wont even take a charge most of the time battery life still sucks and it heats up when i make a 5 min phone call. i called sprint and had them look at it they said everything is fine and works the way it supposed....
im just stuck with it i suppose... i do nothing more then text on it and phone calls now eveything else isnt really worth it to me. the women at the sprint store even told me not to check my email in order to save battery life....

I like the use of the unpinch zoom on the google maps. Take that DROID. Sure, your integrated google maps does turn-by-turn, but we got multi-touch!

Wow that was a lot better then the old add's much much better :)

very good commercial. go palm ! beat the iphone !

now that kind of commercial is what they should have done with the pre..

Reminds me a lot of the ads for the myTouch and other new Android phones. Very social-centric and focused on customization.

so I'm wondering if the Pixi will have video-taking capabilities??? if so, is that a 1.3.1 feature that they're trying to keep mum? I'm thinking not now, I'm sure the bloggers would be touting it

just stopped by sprint store....The phone is so small . THis management team is no joke. 1.3 webos was on it. Played with it for a half hour and it will sell very well!! Palm keep up the good work
