Well well! bananachunk has some images of the Palm Pre caught in the WILD [via BGR]. Apparently these lucky devils have been using their Pre phones for awhile now (several weeks) -- but more info on their identities isn't out there yet. Well, we do know that they had them out at the annual "Bring Your Own Big Wheel race" in San Francisco, for whatever that's worth.
Go ahead and stare, it's ok.

Why do they have their keyboards slid out to take a picture? The photo can't be real, or the users are idiots.
My understanding is that the spacebar can be used for taking the picture, which would seem to be what they are doing.
Are you saying that to use the camera you have to slide out the keyboard? That's can't be accurate. I don't see why someone would slide it out to take a picture, let alone two people right next to each other. The picture is a fake.
Nah, I'm sure there's a touchscreen button for taking a picture as well - but anyone that's used a camera where you touch the screen to take a picture (iPhone users, and in my case, my old-skool Olympus m:robe 500) will tell you that sharply tapping the same device body that is taking your picture will usually result in a blurry picture and sad you. Thus, Palm smartly included the ability to press the spacebar as a shutter button as well as touching the screen.
That kind of makes sense. I don't have experience with touchscreen camera shutters. I'm guessing pressing the spacebar has less shaking effect than tapping the screen? Either way, you'd still need to use two hands to get a still picture.
That certainly doesn't look like it would stabilize the camera while pushing the space bar. Something's messed up, either with the device or the way they are using it. What if you want to take a landscape orientation picture? Do you hold it sideways with the keyboard out?
Maybe pressing the space bar insures that your giant gorilla fingers aren't covering up the hole that light goes into before it hits the CMOS chip that records the digital information that can recreate an image on your display?
Hurry please!
Looks rather unstable and top-hevy in the wild. I wonder what happens if someone bumps that guys arm while he's holding it like that. What's it like when a Pre with the keyboard open hits pavement? Not good, I imagine. Will it turn out to be one big design flaw?
If you have seen any of the demo videos with the keyboard slide open while sitting on a table, you would know that the it sits flat on its base and doesn't rock on to the upper half. From that you, can predict that it is NOT top heavy and is very stable.
Question: what happens when ANY phone/smartphone hits the pavement? "Not good, I imagine." Have you ever owned a slider texting phone? You cannot mean that all those phones are fatally flawed also, right?!
fyi, when you start using "?!" you look like a fanboy. Be careful.
Now we know what all that space beneath the keyboard buttons is for. Without it there would be nothing to hang onto when pushing down the buttons.
I would believe the story more if it were about Chinese clones being on the market already.
Could also be a free ad campaign for Palm - someone passing on a staged picture for the gadget sites to show.
That awkward spacebar shutter key could be one of the reasons that the up-gesture was changed. The forums were predicting that the gesture area button was reconfigured or configurable. I'm thinking that it can be used as a shutter button, and these two haven't yet had that update pushed out.
Why in the hell would little kids have these in the wild? Surely they are not beta testers?
I think they are real, follow the BananaChunks's link and look @ photo 4/5. That's Ed Colligan's daughter on the left & Dan Hesse's son on the right. ;]
are you a family friend or something, myspace buddies, did she wite on your wall? how do you know who the kids are?
If you are right and Colligan's daughter and Hesse's son are together, then you Verizon people are hosed. It is a Sprint exclusive until they break up.
;)
Best post in April so far.
I saw a guy at Pete's coffee in Saratoga, CA using on 4 days ago. No kidding.
It was a Pre, no doubt whatosever. We're not too far from Palm over here.
I zoomed in on the picture of the screen and I annnalyzed what they were taking a picture of and all the ground shadows matched and everything checks out. It couldn't have been photoshopped their too because it has the controls over it on the screen.
Huh...the Pre sure looks small in the blonde kids' had...
er...hand
REALITY CHECK:
1. The Pre is not a very distinctive smartphone. It looks like many other keyboard slider phones.
2. The vast majority of the public isn't looking for the Pre evidenced by the fact that practically nobody noticed that it was being used out in public.
3. Practically nobody has been given a chance to handle the device so we don't know what the ergonomic characteristics are. They might be quite poor.
Wow...way to be a downer. Good Job!
The pictures of pre in the wild are possible fake in my opinion and in the opinion of others as well. Here's one example.
