Palm Pre Training Videos (Updated)

Inside Sprint Now has posted the above video that appears to be some sort of internal training video ("Be sure to check out the available training").  It's light and airy and there's nothing you don't know here -- although it's worth noting that again the only contact sync options appear to be Google, Facebook, and Exchange.

The video is the only one posted by the user, itechsgurl.  As for the announcer, we're thinking that it's professional "Fake Announcer" Chris Whiting - the voice seems to match and he's based in the same city as Sprint HQ: Kansas City.  (Hi Chris! Prepare for Palm Pre Fanboys to hunt down your every last personal detail online!)

Everybody, it's really going to happen.  The Pre is coming.

Thanks to Reminiz in our Pre Forums for the heads-up!

Update: Reminiz sends in another video, via Sprint Gurus, detailing email on the Pre.  It's after the break!

Maybe this will be part of a group of "training videos" that will be on the sprint/palm websites.

These are internal, they're meant for Sprint employees.

Since what is clearly a semi official blog, condoned by Sprint if not coming right out of HQ, is releasing them, Sprint doesn't think they are meant for employees only.

They have posted both videos through different user names. Viral Marketing?

Are you sure you know what viral marketing means?

Are you sure you know what means means?

The buzzwords viral marketing and viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use pre-existing social networks to produce increases in brand awareness or to achieve other marketing objectives (such as product sales) through self-replicating viral processes, analogous to the spread of pathological and computer viruses. It can be word-of-mouth delivered or enhanced by the network effects of the Internet.[1] Viral promotions may take the form of video clips, interactive Flash games, advergames, ebooks, brandable software, images, or even text messages. The basic form of viral marketing is not infinitely sustainable.

From Wikipedia.

Flogs (fake blogs) and viral marketing are subsets of "social marketing."

I hope that's not the entire training video for Synergy and Email. Not very thorough. Aren't the employees supposed to be thoroughly trained to get you "Ready Now" ?

Yeah these videos are really short. They must been introductions to more thorough training.

At the end of each, he says to check out more training, so yeah, I think these are basically section intros.

they are part of internal information provided to us when we log into RSP (retail sales portal). it's just meant to be informational, not training.

Ok that makes more sense, they were very lite as far as any hard info in them.

Is that a Pink shirt?

cya. how stupid of an ending....

Yeah - the videos are really slow and patronising, I'd hate to have to watch all those as a training exercise.

Cya!

Well instruction vids must be a good sign that testing has wrapped up and the units with UPS are final spec. So June 7 would seem to be a logical date for release or to announce reclease date.

---"although it's worth noting that again the only contact sync options appear to be Google, Facebook, and Exchange"

really? no Yahoo? myspace? seems like a mistake. i dont like limitations or being forced to change email providers. i can't be alone on this.

You're not alone. I'm hoping that the people in the forums who've stated that Pre will be able to sync w/ Yahoo are correct. If not though, it will be an annoyance to have to transfer all of my Yahoo contacts over to Google - been with Yahoo way too long and neither want nor need another email account.

Can anyone else shed more light on this?

Will there be a one-time means to move my Palm data to the Pre? I have 700 contacts and 8 years of calendar to preserve. If I'm going to have to carry my Palm Pilot around to keep the data I always trusted Palm to grandfather, the appeal of Pre falls away pretty fast.

gmail should have an export option for your contacts that may take about 30 seconds. Not sure what to do with your calendar though.

you can manually add them. gmail is far superior to any other web-based service. better to move now rather than later.

Yeah I already started moving from hotmail and yahoo to gmail. And so far its way better than both of them. But can you create documents on the Pre just like gmail got.

i imagine Yahoo support completely depends on if Palm/Google have some sort of backroom deal. companies are usually far more concerned about pushing their agenda's than they are listening to consumer demands (Apple is a prime example).

while Synergy is cool, it is a little bit annoying how it is being pushed as some sort of "killer app". in nearly every video ive ever seen Palm reps are pushing it HARD. so what, its a sync'ing tool! it's certainly no excuse for not having true local sync options. add this to the lack of letting reviewers even touch it, worthless celebrity endorsements, using the latest possible release date (usually due to bugs), and the whole thing sort of leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

eve with that said, it wouldnt surprise me AT ALL if it is still the best phone on the market. but palm has bungled the pre very very badly so far.

If im not mistaken, the Instinct was released on a Friday...so why would they release Pre on a Sunday? I dont think they will. That would be dumb! I dont think june 7 is the day.

> so what, its a sync'ing tool!

Synergy is so much more than a "sync'ing tool." In fact, it's more of a concept than a tool and "sync'ing" is really just one part of it.

I understand that many people want local sync, but I for one won't miss it. On average, I sync my 755p a few times a year. I'd say, maybe once or so per quarter. I absolutely hate having to depend on my local computer to keep my phone in sync. So, I say, goodbye local sync, and good riddance.

With my mp3 player, I transfer files to it maybe once or twice a year. But then, I only use it when exercising, so I'm not a power user at all with mp3 players. Still, as techie as I am, I really can't stand the whole "depend on my home computer thing."

Touchstone to charge, no fussing with cables, depend on the home machine only on the rare occasion that I need to pull a file from it, and have a device that's always in synch; sounds good to me.

I for once, disagree with you. I just don't want my data jumping through hoops and hurdles and bouncing all over the 'cloud' just to sync my phone.

There is NO WAY I am going to send my information to Google, just to sync my phone.

And I'll bet there's a significant population of smart-phone users out there, especially potential Pre Buyers who feel the same way. I think Palm is shooting itself in the foot with this one. I for one won't be getting one until there's at least a third-party local sync solution.

That's fine. I don't mind disagreement.

The fact is, most id theft is not cyber-related at all. People tend to fear the cloud more due to comfort reasons that actual facts. Have there been breaches? ABSOLUTELY!!! But it is still safer statistically than the alternative. A few web searches (I won't say use google here, lol) will show this.

Think about this for a sec. Many people fear putting their list of contact into the cloud, but then turn around an send unsecured emails (often with attached spreadsheets filled with financial data for example) to those same contacts. Is this about security or comfort?

By the way, I'm only using id theft as an example here because it is one of the big reasons people think it is better to keep data local. I do agree that it is not the only reason.

Now the rant (as if the above was not long-winded enough)...

I do know that there are people (many) who share your opinion. I also remember a time when people had similar thoughts about putting their money in a bank because they thought it was safer at home under the mattress. More recently, people thought shopping online was not safe or banking online was not safe. One study shows that checking account balances, balance transfers and paying bills are all in the the top 10 online activities for broadband users.

Now don't get me wrong. I do not believe there is anything 100% safe. There have been many issues with scams, phishing, id theft, etc. But the change is still happening despite the pitfalls.

My point is this. On a general level, cloud computing is the change that is happening now. 10-15 years ago when the internet was a very unfamiliar concept, not many thought it would be where it is now. Entire companies are moving to cloud computing (please note that I didn't say all companies). I have personally helped some of them make the change over the years (the term "cloud computing" is new, but the concept is not).

On a personal level, I was simply saying that for me, it is a very welcomed change. Sure there have been breaches. But there have also been breaches in security for non-cloud data. And I believe that in time, many of the cloud computing nay sayers will have a change of heart. Again, not all, but many will. Enough will.

When my grandmother passed a few years back, she still didn't believe in banks. My mom to this day still thinks it extremely unsafe to shop online (you mean you're just gonna give them your credit card number?) So not everyone will accept every change; and that's fine. All that's needed is buy-in from a significant amount of the population.

Are we there yet? No. However we are on our way, and I am excited about both the journey and the destination.

I find it very odd that Palm would produce "Podcasts" regarding the Pre. Isn't the "POD" for an Apple i-Pod? Since they are supposed to be competing with the i-Phone, using that word seems like an unusual choice of words.

no it's not an apple thing. it may have originated there, no clue, but it's not just an apple thing anymore. if you go on scifi.com there are podcasts for almost every episode of battlestar galactica. there are podcasts on SO many sites for so many topics.

But Podcast originates from programming formatted for an ipod.

Apple actually tried to stop anybody from using "pod"whatever but failed.
