Palm Pre sales into the channel in June were above 300,000 units with another 70,000 in May, according to Charter Equity Research analyst, Ed Snyder.
To put that into perspective, last quarter Palm shipped just 351,000 phones, though the folks in Sunnyvale continue to be silent about any number specifics, sticking to the words of Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein, that “sales have been strong and growing.”.
Other numbers Snyder released included:
- 120,000 - the number of phones in stock due to start-up problems with manufacturing and uncertainty in demand.
- 15,000 - the number of units being produced a day
- 1 million - projected number of units to be shipped to Sprint in the first quarter of production.
Snyder also asserted that a WCDMA (That's a GSM Pre to you) version of the phone “appears imminent,” which he said means the company will reach cash flow break even sooner than expected. Our own sources also point to the GSM Pre arriving sooner rather than later.

Perhaps McNamee wants to ensure the shareholder ROI from the market????
Where did the 70k go to in May? Release was June 6th. Did they release this many demos and to developers?
Ah. That makes sense. I assumed that early released demo versions wouldn't have been part of sales numbers.
Is that the way it works? Palm sells to Sprint at $549 (minus two markups), Sprint sells to Best Buy, Walmart, etc (minus one markup), then Best Buy sells to us at $549 (or $849)? Once Sprint's exclusivity runs out then Palm starts selling to other carriers or straight to retailers?
Palm stock is up 5% today, based on the sale numbers?
grrrrr.... i was kinda wanting the numbers to be better since SPRINT bein all hush hush bout it... pssshhh well maybe it will get the ball rollin more i guess
Don't discount those numbers. Apple shipped 1.1M iPhones in their first full quarter. Nobody called that a disappointing start. The Blackberry Storm sold 500,000 units its first month, and that was after a $100 million marketing campaign. Since the Pre's marketing campaign kicked off after the Pre's release, I think we can say the Pre's not doing so badly.
Pre shipments are actually higher than that of the early iPhone with 15,000 Pres/day vs 12,000 iPhones/day.
The global Q1 smartphone market was ~36M units. Assuming Q2 is comparable, that means ~12M smartphones/month, giving the Pre ~2.5% of sales. The expected Q3 quantity of 1M is also about 3% of sales.
That gives Q2 for the GSM Pres to show and give a nice spike in sales, not to mention developer support from the wider world.
sorry if this was posted but it's reported that palm has double the order of pres from to be made by it's assembler in Taiwan Foxconn from 650,000 units to 1.2 million units.
