We're still digging through yesterday's big box materials leak, having already discovered that the Pre is rated M4 for hearing aids. What's more, we've got translations from our excellent forum members (Thanks Syphon!) with plenty to think about. For example, it looks like the Data Transfer Assistant is a web site / web service instead of a desktop app, to wit:
How can I transfer data from my computer?
On your computer, check the email address you used to configure your Palm Profile. Something [I think it is "Click"] the link in the email message to verify your Palm Profile. The link will take you to a web site where you can transfer your data to your phone from organizers like Palm Desktop & Outlook. You can only do this once. This transfer is the way to move your data from your old Palm smartphone onto your new phone.
Now for numbers: We've also discovered that the Sprint SKU for the Pre is PALM100HK, which means that someday, somehow, this link at Sprint's site should give us a chance to purchase the Pre.
Finally, smartphone junkies know that you can head over to the FCC's site for a chance to find upcoming phones before they're released. Big gigantic Palm smartphone addicts know that Palm's Grantee Code is O8F and can be used in the advanced FCC search to hunt down Palm's products. All of the above know that (barring the occasional screw up) the FCC keeps things under wraps until the grantee lets them know it's ok to lift. All of which is a roundabout way of explaining that while the FCC's site doesn't have any info on the Pre yet, we know it's been approved by the FCC because of the following bit on the side of the box:
FCC Equipment Authorization ID number: O8F-CASC.
(If you're wondering: yes, we do have lives. We've just put them on hold to squeeze every last drop of information out of the Palm Pre (river)stone for y'all)

hey dieter are you gonna leave windows mobile for webos? I know your a windows mobile fanboy.
Thanks for putting your lives on hold - all of us reading your news updates are doing the same thing waiting to hear from you. You guys do a great job- and all of your efforts are truly appreciated. Thank goodness the wait is almost over. At least I hope so- lol.
I "third" it. You do an excellent job of keeping us informed on all things Pre. Keep up the good work!
I second Terri's comments.
You sure you never worked on the show Cheaters?
I wanted to leave WinMob for WebOS, but I don't know anything about everyday usage. I need to know that it will actually work in a way that is efficient and awesome.
Thanks Dieter
ceejay. You are going to need a towel to clean up the messand change your pants everytime you use the phone. ITS GONNA BE SWEET!
You're welcome for the translations. =]
Thanks for the update. I'm concerned, though, that the data transfer is a "one time" thing; what if there's a technical glitch? A replaced Pre? Some other need to redo everything where restoring from the "cloud" doesn't work? {ProfJonathan}
. . . or where restoring from the "cloud" isn't available. I haven't seen any indication that Palm is interested in any PIM synchronization other than through the "cloud". That's unfortunate for those who, for whatever reason, don't want to store/transfer their information on the internet. Granted, Google and Facebook are probably more secure than my PC and the Pre loses a lot of it's functionality if it doesn't aggregate your PIM/e-mail/messages from various sources, but a number of people are fine with that.
Hopefully, a 3rd-party developer will come up with a local syncing solution.
Just search for 'desktop synk' on this very page. Life can be hard...
yes the one time sync to alm profile is BS. so their is no way to use this phone without storing all your data on palm servers? LAME
Dude, then don't get the phone. If you want to sync it to a PC go get an isuck.
Why should we have to settle for an iPhone over this one capability, a rather obvious requirement for a large number of users, and give up all the other advantages of the Pre? It's not 'whining' to expect the ability to maintain our own data the way WE want to maintain it - it's actually rather arrogant, or just blind, of Palm to tell its customers that the 'cloud,' whether it's the future or not, IS going to be the way we access and store our information, with no choice in the matter. Frankly, I don't WANT my personal data and notes out in the cloud, but I DO want to have access to them when I'm mobile - that's WHY I got a PDA in the first place - and my smartphone is NOT the center of my data - my PC is and will remain so.
I'm sure a 3rd party will develop this app - too many Pre customers already say they need it. It's just a really stupid thing for Palm to unilaterally declare to be 'dead,' just so they can show how great Synergy can be. I don't doubt Synergy's advantages, but why hobble it - and your only remaining lifeline - out of the box by telling your customers their personal control and the security of their data are not important?
thanks, ptrope, for expanding on my simple LAME :)
why hobble it?
Money. You don't have to pay extra to sync with your PC. Or at least, monthly data can collect much more revenue than the one time cable purchase. But before I get to cynical, the cloud sync has some distinct advantages.
I wholeheartedly agree how awesome and amazing everyone here at precentral is! I know I personally would have gone crazy if I couldn't come here and see frequent updates as you guys provide hourly! You guys are totally amazing and deserve much props!
I would also like to thank you all here at precentral.net. It's been great being able to stop by and see new news before or rather quickly then others. Keep it up and hope this thing gets out to us SOOON!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want a Pre
My concern is apps like splash data....I have had my treo crash on multiple occasions and been able to restore, what will happen with the pre.....will the cloud or online backup be able to keep app data backed up to be able to restore..(although I pray that the pre will solve this problem and never need a hard reset :))
Can we access the "cloud" via a desktop app?
And if yes, is it possible to save that on the drive, i.e. so I can access my contact when I dont have an EVDO signal or wifi link.
If the answer to both these questions aren't yes, then the Pre will be DOA.
edit* "isn't"
In case you want to be notified when the Sprint page (http://nextelonline.nextel.com/NASApp/onlinestore/en/Action/DisplayPhone...) is updated, try adding the link here (http://www.changedetection.com/detect.html).
OFC there are a million other ways to keep track of any changes to that page, but this seems easy enough.
And this is great news on the PRE - thanks a lot guys for keeping us all updated!
