Palm Pre to Launch Weekend of June 5th? (AKA June 7th)

Big ups to Pre_Diction in our Pre Forums for catching the above story at BGR.  They've posted up an internal Palm memo that details a schedule for June 3rd-5th, ending with a "Launch Lunch" on the 5th.  Lines up quite well with all of the Release Date rumors we've been hearing in the past couple weeks.  So June 5th, 6th, and 7th are officially moved to the front of the rumor line now.

As for launching the Pre immediately before the sold-out Apple Worldwide Developers Conference where many an iPhone-rumor is focused we say this: Gutsy.

(And now for some paranoia: "Benefits" is mis-spelled in the image above as "Benfits."  Please please don't let this be a Canary Trap.  We don't like people getting fired.)

this crap is annoying....i just want an effin release date so i know what day to camp out! i am very very tired of my top selling bberry curve!

If they announce the release date then there would be half as much news.

I getting very tired of the false starts. What's the hold-up Sprint?

Is this a Sprint or Palm document?
I can't believe they misspelled a word. It could be bogus but it jibes with the other info on release dates.

"gusty". As in hot air?? Or might that be a typo like "benfits". :-)

Zing. fixed -- thanks!

My premier upgrade is available starting June 1st - can't wait

I'm still holding out for a May 17th launch! (Kidding!)

'IF' this is legit, I do not understand why the Pre will launch with Bestbuy before a Sprint retail store. My thinking is, if 6/7 is 'A' launch day but not thee launch day, Sprint will launch the Pre before 6/7.

I dont see Best Buy getting it before Sprint stores.

I we sure that this is a Sprint internal document? This looks a little cheezy to be a memo with a schedule on it. Any one else wondering if this memo is geared towards another company?

It said that its a Palm internal document, not Sprint.

Which begs the question, when has Palm ever put a Sprint logo on their "internal documents?"

There's a Sprint presentation listed on the document, so I dont think its strange to see the Sprint logo.

Obviously Palm and Sprint are partnering for the launch!

Exciting news until I saw the question mark at the end of the title.

Sorry but the Pre will be killed by the iPhone if this is the release date. Sprint and Palm need this phone out ASAP to help establish the market. This phone will be overshadowed by the 3rd gen iPhone. We need the Pre to succeed but it won't because they are being foolish and not gutsy by Dieter. One can only hope that Apple will not release the new iPhone at this time and only offer the 3.0 update. That will give the Pre a chance to make it. Sprint and Palm should be blasting the airways with Pre-specific advertising right now. They are running out of time.

I am not worried that they will release a new iphone. It is my opinion that I am sure I share this thought with most people.. apple can go screw themselves. I would take a string and a 2 cans before buying an apple product. They can release what ever they want. Their dreams of being on top are just about to end. So they better keep that dev revenue before they really start loosing money.

If adding cut and paste to the iPhone 3G and calling it 3.0 is gonna kill the Pre, so be it. It wont really matter when they release it then, will it?

Or, they could release it before it is ready and upset Palm buyers the way that:

iPhone released 1.0 before they had their battery and 3G figured out and obsoleted their best customer's $600 purchase six months later when the hardware was finally sorted.

Blackberry released the Storm before the O/S was finished and ruined what might have been their most notable product ever.

This cutting edge, high quality phone may not be for you. Go buy a G1 and let the adults wait for their phone.

Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?...

Actually, I know for a fact that the storm had a perfectly good working ROM on it before it launched, but they back dated it because verizon wasn't done testing/debugging the one that was working as promised. The reason the storm failed is because of verizon, not RIM.

phrint, stop hiding in the pleats of your mother's skirt from steve jobs. iphone isn't even the best selling US smartphone in 2009. you are not afraid of the curve? the hottest smart phone in the US and available from all service providers

FYI...I have a Curve that I use for work. I am not really impressed with its interface. Sure, it is great for messaging but that is about it. The iPhone blows it away on so many levels. I considered the Bold for a while after my first gen iPhone took a bath but I still could not get past the RIM interface.

What did you think would happen when carriers gave away the farm in the form of a buy one get one with the Curve? The iPhone finished second for one quarter. Don't worry it will be back on top again the next time around. Carriers can buy that phone's way to the top all they want.

I have been a Mac fan for quite some time so I am just as passionate about Macs as most of you are about Palm. Nothing wrong with that but the personal insults are just immature.

I have always said I support the Pre but there are just as many short-sighted Palm fans as there are Apple fans.

the iphone 3.0 updates are even updates. It is a patch to fix the crap that the phone should have done from day one. I like to use the analogy of the minivan. Why did they wait to sell them with 2 sliding doors when they can wait as long as possible and make money off of 1 sliding door. And now look at it.... all minivans have 2 sliding doors. apple = 1 sliding door, palm = 2 sliding doors. Palm will overcome. Apple's days are over.

BIP,

Unfortunately, your opinion is not shared by 13+ million iPhone owners and the millions more to come. You can bash Apple all you want but, in a sense, they made the Pre come to the marketplace. Anything developed in the smart phone market is due to the influence of Apple and partially RIM.

I am sure that you, as an early Pre adopter, will be the first to gripe when the Pre 2.0 comes out and blows the first-gen away. I can see it now.

You make ignorant comments about buying a string and a can before buying an Apple product. Real compelling argument there.

It is going to take a lot more than just the Pre to help Palm rise from the ashes. Palm just posted a huge loss earlier this year and it will take a complete product line with a viable carrier (not Sprint) to break even.

As I have always said, I want the Pre to succeed but Palm thinks it can spit on Apple by releasing an unproven phone at the same time they announce a new iPhone? Bad move Palm. Bad move.

I am not even going to comment on Anonymous' post because he or she can't even post with an identity.

Oh, my loss!

Are we there yet?

The great thing about 2.0 coming out is with sprint premier (which all pre customers will be a member of) you get full discounts on a new phone after only 1 year.

OH man where do I start.

Never forget where Apple came back from, there's no reason Palm can't do the same. Palm doesn't have to beat Apple or Rim to be successful.

The iPhone is a great product, but it certainly isn't for everyone. Looking at the big cell phone picture they own a small part of it, and there is plenty of room for others. I know its hard to believe but not everybody wants an iPhone. I would bet the majority of prospective phone buyers do not have a clue that what Apple is doing that week. The Apple crowd is a pretty small group in the scheme of things.

They have covered their core Apple customer base added some of their iPod fans, and in the mean time built a nice business. However the average consumer is pretty fickle, and unless Apple comes up with something mind blowing they may move on.

Your statement about Apple and smart phone development is way off. Palm and Rim are the originals, Apple is late to the ball game but with some innovative improvements. They created a striking and easy to use UI, but the touch screen is still more a novelty than a breakthrough in functionality. PDA's have used styluses for years, Fast food restaurants have had touch screen for years, Apple managed to marry McDonald's and old stylus functionality into a phone you can use with your fingers.

Knowing full well that I am going to be flamed by my granola eating, Birkenstock wearing Apple friends. The iPhone is not much more than iPod with a phone attached. It's pretty, plays games and music, but until recently had almost zero real life business functionality. It is also crippled by Apples insatiable big brother mentality. Great phone for the 14-25 crowd, but it's tough to use effectively when you grow up. Palm OS has always been very open, and my guess is they will continue the tradition as WebOS matures.

The advantage that Palm has is the fact that they are not locked into a long term exclusivity agreement with AT&T, or any other carrier. They will be able to distribute their product to a larger pool of vendors giving the customer more choice. quite frankly I have been on all three of the major networks. AT&T's pricing is way out of wack and their coverage is horrendous, Verizon is OK but their pricing is outrageous as well. IMO, based on the extensive traveling that I do on the East coast for business, Sprint is by far the better option for coverage and most certainly pricing.

Palm doesn't have to beat anyone to be successful but they will need a complete line of products, not just the Pre, to become profitable. One phone will not bring Palm back from the flames it is currently burning in right now.

Palm and RIM are the originals but it is Apple and RIM that have been innovating the smart phone market for the past few years. Everyone follows in Apple's footsteps these days because the company knows what it is doing. It is revolutionizing the cell phone industry just like it did with the iPod and digital media. People still buy iPods, Macs and iPhones. I don't see that trend changing anytime soon.

Funny thing is I am a business professional. I don't eat granola and I don't wear Birkenstocks. Funny that your stereotyping is taking all substance from your post. I find your biased comment about the iPhone being used effectively when, as you say, you grow up. I am a business owner and I use my iPhone for many different functions including email, sales tracking, finance and many other business functions. Do some research and you will see how many small to medium sized business owners are embracing the iPhone. RIM would definitely lose their market share if Apple ever decided to provide a true push feature for email.

I have been with Verizon and Sprint and I have had the same issues you state you had with AT&T. AT&T is fine where I live and I have no issues. I couldn't get a consistent signal with Sprint and I left Verizon because of their customer service. Great thing Sprint works for you as it sounds like you are tied to that carrier for your needs. It's all relative to where you live in the country as to which carrier works for you. I am a Mac fan and I chose the iPhone not AT&T. The service is working just great so far and I am happy to pay the premium for what I get.

I'm sure palm has some specifics up their sleeves that will put them ahead of any phone that's currently out, or plan on being released. Hence the reason why they are being so strict about not letting any phone feature specifics out, besides the basics they've let out already. a June 7th release date could be good or bad, but only time will tell. I hope Palm and Sprint succeed with the Pre, just me personally I wouldn't buy an Iphone even if it would make me breakfast in bed (lol)... Actually I'll take that breakfast statement back.

One June 7 the tech section of the papers will be filled with pictures of the neat new Apple table that runs iPhone OS with all sorts of neat multimedia stuff that the press just loves.

The number of people who know what a Pre is will double from hardly anyone to precious few. I doubt anyone will take a second look at a smartphone that looks like mostly any other messaging phone.

A canary trap, eh? Makes sense, then, that I heard about it through a tweet. :) {ProfJonathan}

Just to let you guys kno, Jon Rubinstein | Executive Chairman, Palm will be speaking at D 7 may 26 to 28. Great time to announce something important right?

http://d7.allthingsd.com/speakers/

This reminds me of the vaporware days of video game systems. It stops you from buying now because you are waiting for the super system coming.

Sure it's coming, but the rumors...Feb 17, Mar 1, Mar 15, Apr 17, May 17, June 7. Our hopes are kept high because it's only a few weeks away. Before long the end of the 1st Half of 09 is here. I know this is the date promised by Sprint, but the rumors keep getting hope high, as well as frustrations! I just wish Sprint would announce a date!

Badges...we dont need no stinking badges
Why are all the apple fanboys in here reading about the PRE if your not worried??????Hmmm...

Seriously, Bestbuy is a plausible place to sell the Pre. Umm Verizon sold the Blackberry Storm ON launch day at BB. I don't see this as a problem. Looks like Insidesprintnow didn't know what he was talking about because I just called BB and confirmed it will be there. So there ya go. Sprint and Palm win buy supplying BB. Calm down people!

I swear to god, if I can't get one of these on the day it's released, I'm going STRAIGHT to the AT&T store to buy an iPhone.

Not your not, your not kidding anybody, youll wait like everybody else.

Watch me.

Don't do that! Wait for the new iPhone announcement. Everyone else is. How many iPhones 3Gs were sold last Summer? 1 million in 74 days. Maybe this Summer won't be as big. Maybe it will be just as big. Now THAT's something that people will be waiting in line for.

wait....I'm I going to have to go to a store to buy the pre? really? How about if I am a sprint premiere customer?

Of course it will be available online too.

This is perfect, for me at least. Had the Pre come out a month ago I would already be in it on a new contract. But now I can evaluate both phones(Pre, iPhone) as they're released and make a choice.

I like having choices =D

I have to say after owning over 150+ cell phones in the past 15 years, this is the most anticipated phone that I want. With that said, whenever it comes out I hope Palm and Sprint got most of the kinks out of it. I'm expecting some, but hopefully it's not many (NO PHONE (especially smartphones) is without any at launch). I would love to have it on launch day, but definitely want it within the week of launch. So, a message to Palm and Sprint - MAKE ENOUGH!!!

You go through ten phones a year? Dude..what up?

I'm not an Apple hater, but with new features such as:

* Search your iPhone
* Cut, copy, and paste
* Send photos, contacts, audio files, and location via MMS
* Read and compose email and text messages in landscape

... it's pretty clear that iPhone 3.0 is an incremental improvement. The iPhone is pretty sweet, but the Pre is an entirely new device running a new operating system.

I don't think there's too much danger behind launching the Pre so close to iPhone 3.0.

If the Pre is as good as we all hope it will be, the tech-papers will do an immediate comparison making Palm the winner of that weekend. If Pre = not so good... ouch!

Finally someone with their head on straight. Kudos to Rob!

As i posted before, and people disagreed, Palm thinks their phone is an iPhone killer. Which, is why they will want it released at the same time -- they want the new iphone reviews to feature comparisons to the new Palm Pre.

It's a risky, and brilliant, marketing idea -- nice way to get lots of free press off the new iPhone hysteria to come

Pre is going to get slaughtered afgainst the Jesus/iPhone. Won't make it to pre 2.fail

Pre may get launched on June 7th (and I hope it does) but that document is FAKE!! As for all you I Phone idiots if your not that worried about our beloved Pre, stay in your own damn forums, and quit drooling over greatness!!! JEALOUS.

yeah get your iphone loving crew out of these forums, your probably waiting to get a pre yourselves that's why your here.
