Cleanser in our Pre forums has successfully hacked a Pre to operate on Verizon's network. Voice and text are a go, but data isn't up and working yet:
Only problem is that I can't get data to work. Apparently webOS is checking to see if the device is provisioned or not before allowing a data session to take place. So my next step would be to somehow bypass this provisioning check.
Apparently the difficult part is getting Verizon to take the MEID of the device (its unique identifier), this despite Verizon's claims of being an open network. It's early days, though, so we won't hold that against big V.
Speaking of early days, that's where we are at with this -- so the important thing is to keep your eyes peeled for further updates rather than go looking to apply this hack yourself. Nevertheless, we know that more than a few people would be giddy over hearing the dulcet tones of the Verizon activation girl on a Palm Pre, so we had to post this with Cleanser's video.

Given this, it seems that (unlike the info. I'd previously been given by someone) the Pre *hardware* for Sprint could run on Verizon as well. As a VZW customer for many years and a current 6-month (at least) user of Sprint courtesy of the Real Reviewer program, I'm glad to see that I may be able to purchase and switchover my Pre when/if Palm sees fit to end the program. Thanks! {ProfJonathan}
I find it highly unlikely darkfall gold would contract Verizon coverage nationwide.. They couldn't afford that. There is also a regulation about how miles of darkfall skill on your home coverage area.
It should work on METRO PCS then.
blah blah blah... No updates for you.
Not that this isn't cool, but if you think that Palm won't apple the Pre when updates come.... Be patient, my Verizon friends, your time will come.
With Sprint's Everything Data Plan, you can roam on the Verizon network for both Voice AND Data with no additional charges. It's included. No hack necessary.
1xRTT is included, not EVDO. Where I live there is Verizon and ATT 3G. Sprint voice is decent, but data is stuck at 2G. I cannot justify buying a Pre only to saddle it with 2G.
Sorry. I found it. It was a setting I saw early on when I got it that I forgot about. D'oh!
Now where's that "Delete Post" button? :)
Could you explain this? I live in a Sprint-unfriendly area, apparently, and I'd love to be able to use other networks for data and voice. Not that I've had a lot of problems, but there are definitely places my phone doesn't seem to work where I'd like it to.
That's the claim that Sprint makes but I have tested this theory again and again and it just isn't true. Within a group of my friends (4 iphones/att, 2 voyagers/verizon, 1 enV/Verizon, 1 Rumor/Sprint, 2 Instinct/Sprint) I can be standing next to the sprint phones and they have 2 to 4 bars less than me and my other Verizon counterparts, ATT is usually within a bar of me but drops the calls out of nowhere. This happens all through Massachusetts (Boston, New Bedford, Springfield, Worcester, Lowell, Attleboro/Taunton) and all through RI and CT where as I checked Sprints coverage map online today, claims to be "Best" in all these areas.
Sprint doesn't have access to all Verizons towers, or is getting half the signal. I have amazing reception in Boston, and all my Sprinters have dismal service when on a call a foot away from me.
thats because you dont understand how roaming works.
Sprint phones dont do constant scans for Sprint/VZW towers & switch to whoevers best. Sprint phones ONLY switch to VZW towers when there is no Sprint signal left. the reason your friends reception is less is because they are on a Sprint tower at the time.
Not true, not everywhere. And if you are a sprint customer roaming on verizon you don't get the same high speed.
This hack is always possible on CDMA phones with the right codes and knowhow. However you'll never get the data running so it is not a useful hack for an Internet-centric phone.
Is that why I don't have Alltel's firmware for my v3m flashed over Verizon's, with full data/sms/mms/voice? Oh wait, that's right, I do.
EVDO 4tw.
Great! Now you can pay more for less, just like all the rest of the Verizon customers.
As I commented above, there are certain places (like where I live) that have Verizon and ATT 3G, but Sprint doesn't. I think it would make sense to pay a small premium to get 3G rather than 2G, even if it means losing text messaging (I don't use it) and Telenav (I use TomTom on my old Treo 650).
Right - who the hell would want to pay what Verizon charges for their service. I was paying way too much with Verizon. AND NO - I don't work for SPRINT.
I did not see any voice and text in that video!
lol nice hack. I did this for my old sanyo mm5600 a few years ago for my friend. We could never get data on it either.
like the comment "Great! Now you can pay more for less" lol
HACKERS CAN DO ANYTHING THESE DAYS! http://askthecollegekid.blogspot.com/
Can they hack my brick of a Fuze to work on Sprint? I've been paying a fortune at AT&T and just found I can get a waaaay better deal at Sprint. But I've got this very expensive brick (Fuze) that I wouldn't mind doing something with. Minus shoving it down the developer's throat.
I already have my palm pre running on alltel for the past few weeks. im in the same boat as cleanser. i have voice and text but no data.
This guy is a genius.
Can he hack my car to run on gold bullion next?
I suppose this is great for those few people who can't wait six months for the Verizon Pre to be out. My only complaint is one that has been addressed before: What is with the sideways videos? If I remember right, the Doom-on-Pre video was also sideways. Is there some aesthetic reason that I'm missing?
*SIGH* The Pre is NOT going to Verizon, the CEO of Verizon was blowing smoke.
"Sigh" get a clue, the Pre goes to Verizon on Jan 1 2010. A few more months. Sprint never denied that.
pre will be on verizon., shut the fuck up you
Verizon will have a better version with more memory and the bugs worked out in a bit over five months. Worth the wait.
can u plz email me the video i wanna use this phone in india and all possible guidance to do so
thanks
Just a note on roaming.. in CDMA, the PRL (preferred roaming list) in your phone tells it which towers to use. It's a hexidecimal listing of all the towers it is allowed to use. For Sprint to be able to roam on Verizon, there has to be a contract in place. I find it highly unlikely Sprint would contract Verizon coverage nationwide.. They couldn't afford that. There is also a regulation about how miles of restriction on your home coverage area. For example, if you have service in Houston, you can't roam on another carrier in Houston. I believe it's 50 miles. As far as roaming EVDO, they charge a fortune for that, and I'm almost positive even if Sprint does roam on Verizon, you won't get the high speeds. They reserve that for their paying customers. For a nice example, look at Cricket wireless. It's free in the city, and there is a roaming charge, that is passed on to the customer. They roam on Sprint and Alltel by the way. Sprint makes most of it's profits on selling off the bandwidth they have free because it is bleeding customers. I hope they come up with some way to make money before everyone else in the country goes LTE and leaves them out in the WiMax cold alone.
casino online is great device casino online is one i want
