Presumably to be included in the box with a new Palm Pre will be a quick start guide, a slightly more-in-depth manual, a charging cable, and now we've discovered via Engadget that there will also be a nifty little ten-page gesture guide. While it's relatively simple and straight forward, and the gestures aren't anything we haven't seen before at some other point, it's nice to know that they'll all be compiled into one place for future Pre owners. So, what will those future Pre owners learn to do?
Read on for the gestures!
Thanks to Mark for the tip!
Turn on the phone: Push the power button.
Open the launcher: Press the center button, then tap the far right icon in the dock.
Close the launcher: Flick up from the gesture area to the screen.
Open Quick launch: Drag up slowly from the gesture area, move your finger from right to left to select the app you want, and the lift your finger to start the app.
Minimize apps and go to Card view: Press the center button or flick up from the gesture area to the screen (when already in an app).
Resize cards and change card order: Tap and hold a card, then drag cards to change order.
Go back a level in an app: Quick swipe left in the gesture area on either side of the button (do not cross the button).
Close an app: When in Card view, throw the card off the top of the screen.
Move to previous or next open app: Full swipe left or right in gesture area.
Scroll to a specific point: Drag in the desired direction.
Scroll quickly: Flick in the desired direction.
Stop scrolling: Tap the screen while scrolling.
Zoom in: Place two fingers together and move them apart.
Zoom out: Place two fingers apart and bring them together.
Zoom in/out a fixed amount: Double tap the screen. Double tap again to zoom out. (Double tap works within the Web, Photos, Email, and Google Maps app. How each of these apps zoom may vary.)
Place cursor in a text field: Tap the location where you want the cursor to go.
Move cursor: Insert the cursor, press and hold the orange key, and then drag anywhere on the screen.
Select text: Insert the cursor, press and hold Shift, and then drag anywhere on the screen.
Delete a list item: Swipe the item off to the left or right of the screen.
Drag and drop: Tap and hold the item, drag, and then lift your finger to drop.
Open menu: Application menuu: Tap the upper left corner. Connection menu: Tap the upper right corner (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Airplane Mode can be found here.)

Nice find.
I been doing these gestures in my sleep.
Sweet, just having a connection menu shortcut is awesome.
I am still quite upset that they changed the big swipe up gesture from 'going straight to the launcher' to 'going to the card view', then 'going to the launcher'. This is so completely redundant to the center button! I would love to just big swipe over and over to open and close the launcher from any app / anywhere on the phone. Now you will have to drag up and go to the quick launch bar and go to the launcher icon or go to the card view first every time before going to the launcher.
At least it's still one step accessible with the Quick Launch. It's not that bad.
No. Just way better before they changed it.
Since we don't really know what palm is planing down the line, we don't know if it was better before. They've already commented about this on twitter. I personally don't see it as an issue.
I do wonder, however, if they ran into conflicts with the "slow swipe up" for the task bar and the "quick swipe up" for the launcher.
You might be able to configure the gestures in the settings somehow. I'm sure someone at Palm reads these boards and heard some of the complaints about the changes. I think they want to get everything right with this device so listening to the customers input is a top priority. I don't see this being a problem.
Off topic: Thanks, PreCentral, for making logins a requirement. That should cut down on the noise quite a bit.
Yes, but how are we ever going to survive without the "pre = fail; iphone rulez" Anonymous comments? :-)
i really hope that palm makes that an option, i personally like swiping up from anywhere and getting the launcher......i really dont understand why they changed....i guessing it because they are worried about the dumb (new to smartphones) users and dont want to complicate the use of the phone.
i think its better and less confusing how they originally had, but whatever.... hopefully someone in palm knows that this was a wrong move and they will fix it or put an option
I'm sure palm has a good reason to do the swipe up change - I'd just like to know what the reason was. Come to think of it, I think I'd prefer a Palm Pre without the center button at all..
The center button does more than just the card view. If you hold and press C, it copies.. P, it pastes, X, it cuts... might be some others. But quick press it just goes to card view. Just don't understand why they would also make the big swipe up the same.
You sure about this? I've never heard the center button providing extra features anywhere.. Why use the center button for this when you have the modifiers on the keyboard.. interesting...
Yeah... if you look at the drop down menus in any of the apps, it says Cut, Copy, and Paste and the respective "Center button" + X, C, V alternatives
Check out the emulator pictures and videos from the last few PreCentral topics.
It is very interesting that once upon a time the 'static' was when is it to be released? and what is the cost? and will there be additional apps? These questions have been answered and now the noise is other minor details that do not matter. This mobile device is drop-dead sexy and just to have one will be good enough for me. Multi-tasking and the underlying Synergy portion of the OS are really game changers. The fact that it is gorgeous and runs on 3G makes me salivate. IMHO
Amen. We'll always find something to complain about.
The big swipe up and center button are matters of designed functionality... not just a minor issue. The two functions are clearly redundant. This issue was brought up at the beginning of April after the CTIA event, where the change was first discovered. It is not just something to complain about! Think about how much easier it would be to just quickly swipe up over and over to ope and close the launcher from anywhere. Then, the big swipe had a proprietary function. It no longer has this dominant functionality, because it takes you to the card view first, the same as the center button.
Daniel, until Palm releases all the facts, we are just complaining based on speculation. They've mentioned that they will tell us why they did/didn't change this feature. I suggest we wait to find out. Just a thought.
@ Taha
I'm sorry, but do you see anyone else using others' real names? Just a thought. Of course we can just wait to find out. But the point of PreCentral is to talk about our premature findings before the thing actually launches. I am not saying that I will boycott Palm if the issue is not addressed. I just want people to think about it, talk about it.
