Those ads that we here at PreCentral.net and the Twitterati find creepy and disturbing -- they appear to be working amongst the general public. So says HCD Research, who did a "national Media Study" with 305 viewers whose emotional response was more "Happiness" and "Inspiration" (26% and 25%, respectively) and less "Distrubing" and "Skepticism" (9% and 18%).
The ad shown to the viewers was the "Bing" ad, above. Sample-size aside, we're wondering what the response to the "Crazy" ad would be - or even worse, the response to the unmitigated horror of the "Juggler."
In any case, it's a little piece of vindication for Modernista, who put the ads together for Palm - 67% found the ad at least somewhat effective.

Thanks to Manny for the tip! Article updated to clarify that this was more of a "Media Study" than a "Survey" or Poll.

As expected. That ad is imo, one of the least creapy.
Try the Juggler. Dang dang dang dang on the piano and the slow beat. Creeeeeapy.
i'll just say they are lucky i was pretty much sold by youtube demos because, personally, the adds would make me hide the fact that i bought a pre.
The reason I like this ad is mainly for the song. One of my favorites when I was in high school. Nice choice!
Yup. Not very safari friendly
I like the ad too also for the song, which was one of my favorites too. Anyone know the name of the song?
Oh I should have stated the information before, eh?
The band was called the Fruer and the song was "doot doot".
They are now called Underworld of "Born Slippy" fame.
peace
I'd just like to suggest, again, that these types of posts include links to the YouTube video above or below the blank area Pre users see where the video should be. Thanks.
If this has already been done in this post and I missed it, my apologies. The "Bing" link appears to lead to another PreCentral post (with no video link that I can see).

your an asshole, i'm an entrepreneur and these ads are horrible. check the stock price since these creepy ad's came out
I don't know how you people think, I said it before and will say it again. These adds are EFFECTIVE! I love them and so does my wife and we both bought a Pre. Just because these adds are not mainstream and they don't start with " If you want to do this... there is an app for it" does not mean they are not effective. But again, most people on these forums have no business sense.....
Did you buy a Pre because of the commercials or were you set to buy one before they came out, or regardless of the commercials? These ads barely show any features or benefits of the phone - the iPhone commercials do a great job of clear-as-day laying out what practical things it can do.
These adverts do not make the impact they need to. The PRE is almost completely forgotten because of the crazy ars*d commercial that says almost nothing.
stock got slaughtered today. God i hope they open that damn hurry and open that app store up soon. like in tommorrow morning. lol

I'd like to ask a serious question, if I may.
Who cares about these metrics? What does it matter if the ads make people feel "happy" or "inspired"? The purpose of the ad campaign is to sell Pres, not to make people feel all warm and tingly in their "secret places". Did Palm contract out all their marketing staff from the Moonies?
yeah i think the real question that should be asked after seeing that is.
"Will you now buy a Palm Pre?"
and have answers like Yes, no undecided, more likely to, less likely too, no effect one way or the other, Hell yes, hell to that no.
hey i just saw a new palm commercial with the creepy chick. they get right to the point. "linked contacts update automatically." well not a direct quote but there is no mysticism, and they show the phone. it's better cause it's more to the point. she still does that whole looking away and turn to the camera thing in the beginning which i still think is creepy. Personally they need to just pay that cute gymnast girl to do that commercials instead. And Kobe.
Hey, I hope I catch the new commercial soon. :) That sounds a lot better than what they've been doing with Ms. Hope. :)
Oh she's still in it. i kinda get the feeling it was longer and they cut it in half and took off the mysticism in the beginning.
Actually, I liked the ads. I never really got all of the harping about the ads being creepy. Yes, the ads were different but not creepy. The ads are new age and somewhat surreal but not "creepy." It creeped me out that so many folks thought the ads were creepy.
I think "creepy" is probably the wrong word. Surreal and ethereal would probably be a better description. I think the problem with the ads isn't the perceived "creepiness" (although it probably doesn't help that they're perceived that way), but the content-free nature of the ads. The most beautiful girl in the world (and we could argue about who that is, I suppose) isn't going to help you sell anything if she never gets around to talking about the product. Of the commercials she's been in, the closest I've seen her come to actually discussing the product is when they did the one about the Pre reading her mind. Which means that her strongest pitch for the Pre is that it gave her psychotic delusions. Somehow, I don't see that selling a lot of phones. I mean, the Grateful Dead isn't even around anymore...
I have an iPhone 3GS, but I'd gladly trade it in for Tamara Hope. She is so hot, I watch the Pre ads just because she's in them.
I just don't believe it. These ads do not make me want to buy a Pre- quite the opposite.
These are crap - just that simple.. My poll showed 100% of people I asked hated it and wonder what the hell palm is thinking when they are supposed to be advertising a HOT new product.. The ad campaigns of both Sprint and Palm have not been very effective at all.. The general public still has NO clue what a Palm PRE is.
i am not an apple fan boy!!! i have a pre and LOVE it. but what the hell. apple had some damn good ads for the iphone
"if you wana do something... theres an app for that.
if your wana find something... or watch something... you can
all on your phone... only on the iphone :)" right RIGHT?
the pre is a kick ass phone and it deserves better then this.
eeehhhhhh.... damn it palm
Gosh! You think she's creepy? I think she's sexy as hell. Go hippie chicks!
That being said, I think Palm should do something like the iPhone commercials and show close ups of what you can do with the Pre. The functionality is what made me buy the phone.
But they can keep the chick with the dilated eyes.
I'm nearly convinced that the 'creepy'/'out there' ad they had for the Pre wasn't made to particularly convey a certain emotion towards the Pre. I think it was purposely done to be so discordant to the usual chipper, cheery, empowering, etc. sorts of cutesy ads everyone else is putting on the air these days. In essence, the spacy, surreal and as some people seem to see it, disturbing mood that the ad is there is for the sole purpose of simply making the ad stand out from the rest of the flotsam in the ad world and simply getting the words 'Palm Pre' on people's lips. As in having people start saying, 'did you see that messed up ad for the Palm Pre on TV?', in multiple places, and in multiple mediums.
Think of it as 'stirring up the pond', more or less. It almost seems you have to do something extreme, whether you have an absolutely immature approach (GoDaddy), ultra-annoying (savage Geico Caveman beatdown) or something as out-of-whack as the Pre ad to get people to remember what you're selling. That said, now that the name is on people's lips, you can start selling the phone behind the name. It's easier for the door-to-door salesman to start telling you about the features of what he or she is selling when the door is open to them...
Exactly! Most folks here are discussing this ad as something on YouTube. They aren't thinking of it as it would apear amidst a typical commercial lineup on TV. And stand out is exactly what one of them did for my girlfriend recently. She actually stopped and watched it during a Tivo program. She fast forwards those as a rule.
I can understand why you think the ads are memorable, and I agree with you that they are, to a certain extent. But here's a little experiment: Count how many times the woman says "Palm" or "Pre" in the ad.
A company like Apple or Nike can afford to soft-pedal their ads, because they're both iconic, at this point. Palm doesn't have that luxury. It's not 1998 anymore.
I just think the glow of newness is wearing off, that's all. They have to do something a little bit more proactive.
Well, I'm also in the idea that this ad seems to be missing the point, as a regular consumer. But the marketing/business side of me is sort of seeing why they did it this way - they're aiming for the younger crowd with this one. The 80's and early 90's were grabbing for the younger crowd by connecting to popular media - pop stars, music videos, that sort of lot. The rest of the 90's and the early 2000s were spent connecting with the young generation with the internet - e-mail, websites, mp3s.
Now, we're up to the Twitter/YouTube/Facebook generation. You spread your product by generating YouTube hits, either by your work, or the work of others spoofing your work. You get people chattering and blogging about that same ad, which gets others to stare and look at the train-wreck ad, which spreads word that way. It's meant to get the Palm Pre in the meme-savvy concious.
Once you do that, the information about any product you want to find out more about is easy to get. I mean, you have review sites for cell phones - heck, sites like this wonderful one we're on are part of that free, easy-to-access information chain. The traditional product push is changing, and the Palm Pre ad is just a byproduct of that. The trick is just making sure that your little fish gets out ahead of the other fish in the school.
Alright, so I'm a big windbag....
I dig these commercials, but I can't seem to get the Borg queen out of my mind when I watch them.
