Palm Pixi Makes Early Appearance in Walmart Display

Tom, a reader and apparent late-night shopper sent in this photo of the Pixi on display at a Walmart in Tennessee. It looks like Walmart has them listed for $400 retail, but sadly the kind folks at the discount chain didn't have the device fully in their system, thwarting any effort to actually purchase the thing.

The Pixi gets officially released on Sunday, but we're not at all surprised to see it pop up early here and won't be surprised to see if pop up and possibly be sold early elsewhere. If you're not familiar with Sprint, here's the story: they almost always release their phones on Sunday - as they're doing with the Pixi - but inevitably some stores start selling early, Sprint telesales often allows people to buy as early as the Thursday before, and it's general geek mayhem in the days leading up to any smartphone launch on the network. In that regard, the Pre launch was an incredibly well-executed anomaly for the carrier.

We're not suggesting you start harrassing your local Sprint reps or start camping out at your local Walmart, of course, We're just saying that don't be surprised if there are plenty of serendipitous early buyers popping up in our forums before Sunday. Heck, LACienega already has one!

Thanks, Tom!

So many news stories today but no new homebrew apps in days?

Whats up?

Nice. More power.

Wait, am I the only one wondering why this man is wearing Crocs? Didn't those go out of fashion by the end of summer?

Hahaha I thought exactly the same!!

Well, he is shopping wireless at Walmart. Prolly off to the jewelry department for diamond earrings next, only $35 with coupon, this week only.

If you love shoes, and I´m sure you do, then you may have thought about getting some new shoes that are really stylish, modern and cool looking. Well, if that´s the case then you should waste no more time walking through your neighborhood because here you will find everything you are looking for.

I got my Pixi yesterday after the store I work at ran out of Pres to replace my defective ones. All that was left was the Pixi. I've got to admit, I like it better than the Pre. It does everything the Pre does, except fo wi-fi (why duplicate web access when you're paying for it already?), which is no big deal since I have internet anyway with the Everything Data plan. It's easier to hold with the textured skin already on it and the keyboard feels more comfortable to me than the Pre's did.

I've already themed it with Neon and added some homebrew apps last night. It updated to 1.3.1 last night and I absolutely LOVE the text forwarding and the fact I can send to multiple contacts at the same time. Now all I want to see is a link to Windows Live infos like the calendar and contacts from there.

I give the Pixi a 9/10 since the camera isn't as strong, but we've got to remember....the camera is for fun, not serious photography and MOST people have a digital camera, so that's not too big a deal.

How is web browsing on the smaller screen?

Sprint store nearby definitely has them. Newbee sales rep was going to get one when I went in yest (Wed) but was shut down by the mgr. when he saw what she was doing. I may go back again today and give it another try.

@trinity
there are plenty of reasons people prefer to have the option of using wi-fi:
1) wi-fi networks can be many time faster than sprints 3g
2) surfing using wi-fi is less draining on the battery
3) wi-fi comes in handy in places where sprints coverage is low
4) having wi-fi allows you to turn ur pre into a wireless hotspot using my tether
5) there are apps that allow you to control ur PC from ur Pre, through your wireless network

its really not a dupliction of functionality, it adds functionality.

your are right about the wifi I think in many ways the pixi will be better then the pre (no slider to come apart) the only bad thing I forsee is the no wifi. That will not be that big of deal for 90% of us but for us geek typs and for those of us who use my tether its a huge draw back...

Shit, got beat to the punch about those Crocs LOL.

Anyway, sure it's a good looking phone, but are people seriously comparing it to a big brother with twice the storage, a bigger screen, and faster performance? You folks are a strange lot.

"Twice the storage"??

Pixi = 4GB, Pre = 8GB... unless that was a specious rumor and it's actually 8.

aaaand indeed it was. I stand corrected. The remaining two features, however...

Just for having no Wifi and not giving a 3mp camera instead of 2mp, Pixi's right price should be as WalMart advertised for the first-time buyers, $29.99. And Palm should make sure IT DOES EVER NOT MANUFACTURES A SMARTPHONE WITHOUT A WIFI RADIO. Next batch of Pixi should have Wifi that whomever Palm decides to sell.

I like Pixi otherwise and sincerely hope it sells more than Centro worldwide.

For those who are knockin' my crocs, I don't mind but those damn "shoes" have served me well the past several years in the deserts of Iraq and other parts of the Middle East during my multiple deployments. I don't wear them for fashion. ;)

Crocs rock my socks off, but Big Dawgs are better. ;)
