Palm to Introduce Push Services

In addition to the Early Access SDK program just announced, Palm also announced their "Mojo Messaging Service, " which according to Palm's Blog, "will enable developers to have live interactions between users and applications both on and off the cloud."  That may or may not mean push services in the style of RIM and the iPhone 3.0 software, but it certainly sounds like it.

Given that the Pre will have a relatively small 1150mAh battery, the ability to push messages out instead of have apps polling for data in the background could make a huge difference in overall battery life.  We're not sure what "live interactions" refers to direclty, but we're clearly intrigued to hear what that could entail.

The official details after the break!

Palm also announced that it would deploy its first Palm branded cloud service. Cloud services are software resources provided over the Internet. These services can deliver direct benefits to the end user, such as giving them access to their favorite web applications, or can be incorporated by developers into their applications to enhance the end-user experience.

When the Mojo SDK is broadly released later this year, it will include a developer-facing offering called the Mojo Messaging Service, an XMPP publish/subscribe service. The Mojo Messaging Service is an elegant, standards-based way to exchange information over the Internet. When new information is available, it is “published” to the cloud and all interested parties who are subscribers are notified that new information is available. This will allow developers to push live content to their applications or services. The Mojo Messaging Service initially will have a limited feature set and service level that will evolve over time.

Wow this is hot! This means 3rd party developers can use the dashboard notificaitons to communicate with users/user accounts on/offline! That's like 3rd Party Push 3.1 compared to iPhone's 3.0!

iPhone 3.0 does support the use of notifications. I think I need more info on how this is different from what BB and iPhone do/will do.

I think article is saying that 3rd party push is capable off and online with that app. Remember, all the Pre apps are really just web-apps, so the direct "push" notifications are synonymous with IM notifications, implying live direct communication from the 3rd party app server/developer to the Pre. Imagine making a special time-specific selection on your 3rd party app, and the app server responds back to you with a response/notification at the appropriate time, and those notifications are either periodically updated or live response notifications depending whether you are online or off. That's why I said this is like 3.1 compared to iPhone's 3.0

so does this mean the gmail built into the phone will be pushed?

i believe it does, sounds very nice

Imagine that someone steals your Pre. Then you PUSH a notification message that says "I know where you are". Then it opens up Google Maps and dials 911 ;-)

that could be a possibility

I hope you are joking about this "I know where you are" push notification, regardless if your phone is stolen or not. This would allow G Maps to "know where you are" at anytime even if the app was not running.

I believe the 3rd party push is most utilized by 3rd party developers. Of course the Sprint native apps (TV, Nascar, etc)
will be able to use off/online push with some personal settings tweaks. It's all about practicality. So let's use common sense when speculating out this new device/services.

But if your phone is one people can "know where you are", no? I thought this was the case with all cell phones.

I was not joking. But i was imaging that the push notification started a mapping application, and showed the thief where the thief was. At the same time the GPS cordinates is sent back to the owner.

In the real world it might be better to silently track the phone, else the thief would probably just drop it, throw it away, into a dumpster, onto a truck, a train, water, ... and then leave

Spam via notifications?

Spam is the world's never ending problem. Any 'push' spam would be only from the developers, so I would consider that kind of spam as simple advertisements.

it does have the "know where you are" feature. remember it will see where you are in accordance to your appointments and if your running late let you know and email your appointment and let them know how late your going to be.

well there is a feature you can turn on to make it happen. there was an article about it not long back.
