Palm Eos vs. Palm Pre vs. iPhone: Sized Up

The Palm Eos made quite the splash today, but to us the biggest news about it is how crazy-small it is.  Truly, is the the successor to the Centro.  If the Eos's purported specs pan out, what you're looking is a size comparison (thanks, sizeasy!) between the Palm Pre (in red), the Apple iPhone (in purple), and the Palm Eos (in orange).  As you can see, it's not only the thinnest of the bunch, it also is only 55mm wide, meaning it's going to feel pretty darn great in the hand.

The only downside that we can see is that to fit it all in such a tiny package, Palm had to make a compromise somewhere.  That compromise: the screen.  The Eos's screen is 2.63 inches diagonally, compared to the Pre's  3.1 inch screen and the iPhone's 3.5 incher.  Palm also had to cut some pixels, the Eos is purported to be 320x400 instead of 320x480.  The good news on that front is that we are more than confident that the webOS has the flexibility to handle pretty much any screen size you can throw at it because so much of it is based on web technologies.  The 'bad' news is is a mixed bag: the screen will be small, but so will the Eos itself.

you guys are horrible. This is going to hurt PRE's number of units sold the more we talk about this little POS.

Depends on whether it's real or not. The jury's still out on that one.

If it's real, then yes, that will take away some sales from Sprint. If not, then some people might go for the Pre because they couldn't get this phone.

you have to understand that there are these types of people that read the interwebs called idiots and they want Pres. They see an article about this POS mini and think oh that ones cool I'll wait for that one instead of the Pre. They don't know any better.

The upside to this is that that means more of a chance for the people who really deserve this phone will have a better chance at getting one.

You make no sense. Miniaturized is very often higher value and more advanced. It certainly is in handheld devices and phones
There are aspects of the EOS that are better than the Pre and visa versa. They are not apples to apples.

The only person this device would hurt is Sprint. Palm needs to sell as many devices as possible and the don't all have to be Pre.

I disagree - I'm stuck with AT&T for awhile, but I'm excited about the webOS availability. A lot of people are locked into their wireless provider, and palm's just giving everyone an opportunity at the new os goodness.

Looking forward to seeing what the AT&T rollout dates will be.

Second half 2009

The problem is that I'm not interested in the eos/pixie. It's too small on RAM as well. I want the larger (screen, memory, formfactor, hype) of the PRE but I want it on AT&T.

I imagine Palm has ran sales figures for launching multiple devices and found it beneficial at some point.

palm has said all along the Pre is one of a line of devices to run webOS, and i know mathematical models exist to estimate max profitability. Have faith in palm and their strategy.

personally, they're probably not going to launch a second device too close to the Pre anyway ( lets say 3 months )

where do I sign up to be notified when this beauty is available? webOS in this small of a package, and not on sprint. sign me up!

even if this is a pre killer, this is bad for both palm and sprint.
people will just wait for it instead of buying the pre,and the palm pre sold units will just decrease.

That Eos is a Pre killer!! It's the new Centro. It'll probably be wildly popular among the "OK, that looks like a cool phone. Look at all those buttons!" crowd. All you Pre fanboys don't get all worked-up just because you're not the hottest, latest, and greatest anymore. You know it had to happen. You just thought that you would have the phone for a few months before it was old news. Welcome Eos! You're the latest and the greatest!

Even if the Eos turns out to be true, which I doubt, I'd still go for the Pre.
More memory, larger screen and slider are a plus.

I don't like the keyboard always out, I want to be able to hide it away when I'm not typing. :)

AT&T's 3G data network is complete trash. The Pre would clearly be ruined on AT&T. All that power on the phone marred by the slow and horrible coverage of AT&T's 3G network, are you kidding me? The Pre clearly belongs on a CDMA network, which means Verizon or Sprint. Verizon wants the iBrick so they fucked up and passed on the Pre and so it is coming on Sprint. Which is great because that means the best data plans you can find (including unlimited text messaging) for the lowest price of ANY carrier and it also means competitive pricing on the handsets as well. So for the consumer in this hurting economy Sprint is the best choice as you're getting the most features and services for AT LEAST $20 cheaper A MONTH than you would get on any other carrier.

I'm so tired of hearing the morons who signed a 2 year contract on AT&T complaining that the Pre is not on their network when it would clearly cripple the Pre as well as suck our pockets dry for crappier data coverage. Done.

completely agree with you!!

I dont know why everyone think sprint sucks. Price= great, coverage=great, by far the best 3g coverage= great.

Wow, a lot of people getting worked up over something that is totally speculative at this point. I'll hold judgment until we get some sort of confirmation from Palm. But given how close of a hold they've had on the Pre I have my doubts on this one....

hey idiot above me^^^^^^^^. you have no clue what your talking about. eos is way too small and has no physical keyboard. who the hell would want that? besides you yourself. you can keep your crap screen keyboard and the screen is so small it looks like 6 year olds might have trouble typing on it. just stick to at&t and have fun with your wanabe PRE and icrap.

Um no. The EOS is about half as powerful as the Pre, and not nearly as sexy. This will steal no thunder of the Pre from any real fan who really wants one. If you love the look and design of the Pre, then the EOS is fugly. Although since this image is clearly a fake, if this phone really comes out, hopefully for Palm's sake it will look a lot better than that fugly phone in this image. Still won't touch the Pre though. Not even close.

You're using the wrong specs for the iPhone. The iPhone is 12.3 mm thick.

Still need Verizon, so none of it matters yet.

Palm needs to stop selling Centros and let this thinner WebOS qwerty take it's place.

I would still buy 10 Pres before I would buy 1 EOS or 1 iPhone. Love the bigger screen and gesture area and curved slider qwerty and et cetera.

> I would still buy 10 Pres before I would buy 1 EOS or 1 iPhone

Ditto!

Ok, now we see where they fritter away the time they would so badly need to get an UMTS Palm Pre up and running. Stupid. This is really stupid. Listen Palm, 95% of the potential Palm Pre users live _outside_ the US. And they do not have your stupid exotic US mobile standard, but they have GSM/UMTS. I still do not understand why you decided not to go to that market for many months (I expect the Pre UMTS to come here by the end of 09...). But it's definitively a bad idea to have something else than your flagship on those markets...

95% of wireless networks outside the US are gsm not cdma so the pre users are primarily in the USofA.

> 95% of the potential Palm Pre users live _outside_ the US.

Really? Where did you got that number? Not bashing, asking.

I like the smoothness of the pre, being able to slide the keyboard in and out is a huge plus.

what is this the "lets see whos dick is the biggest" thread? i mean come on with the nonsense, stuff find out the release date and price please!!!!

smallest* :-)

Palm's strategy makes sense to me. Not everyone is going to spring for a pre...times are tough. I got a Centro and I love it. I'm locked into ATT for two years and I'm OK with that. When my phone wears out I will go for an EOS. By that time, it will be free with two year upgrade.

OMG... Palm Eos is the most perfect form what i wanted before! =)
(and other *Business* guys will agree with that)
