No Palm Pre Amazon MP3 Downloads over 3G

Amazon MP3 on Palm Pre

That leaked Palm Pre manual keeps on yielding new info, some of it good, some of it not-so-good. In the category of not-so-good is some news regarding the Pre’s primary music store, Amazon MP3.  Amazon MP3 is a fantastic service and up to this moment it seemed to be have been implemented quite well. But now we know it’s going to come with a limitation that the iTunes Store on the iPhone launched with: no music downloads over 3G.

The application will queue your purchases when on 3G and download them when you get your Pre onto a Wi-Fi network, which for a device that’s supposed to be so mobility-oriented, this is frankly a disappointing development. There is some hope, however. The iPhone’s limitation was imposed by AT&T, though the network eventually relented and iPhone users can suck down as many iTunes purchases over 3G as their battery can handle. Hopefully,  maybe eventually Sprint and Palm will be convinced that true wireless mobility is the way to go.

Here’s what the manual has to say about this (page 122).

Before you can download items using the Amazon MP3 application on your phone, you must have an Amazon account, and you must read and agree to the MP3 Music service terms and conditions.

You can preview music files and queue them up for download over the Sprint network or a Wi-Fi network. However, you must be connected to a Wi-Fi network to download music files. After you purchase and download items from Amazon MP3, listen to them with your phone’s Music application (see “Listen to Music” on page 118).

Thanks to jayzun and AlwayzRight in our forums for the tip!

dont think this bother people that much since 90% of people download music illegally

Well this makes some sense though, making people download 3-5 meg files over wifi instead of 3g frees up the 3g bandwidth for other applications. And like banmebatch said, most people get their music by other means...

Agreed...I really don't care about Amazon mp3 store..I will be dragging and dropping the music from my laptop come June 6th..

Meh. I download music onto my computer so I can share with my family and so the music can be backed up. I've never even considered loading it directly onto my cell phone. I suppose it would be nice to have the ability to listen to the song if I just had to listen to it RIGHT NOW!! I might use that feature once every 3 years. Whatever.

I agree... Never going to buy a song through the built-in store. Just drag-n-drop.

I still don't understand why they aren't using the Sprint Music Store.

probably because it sucks compared to the Amazon store. Also, is the sprint store MP3's?

I just hope that Sprint is getting a cut of the MP3 sales. They are not MP3s. They are .koz files. They used to have an option to download the same songs to you PC but I believe it was DRM WMA files.

Why are they (carrier) being a-holes?! I want to download music over the fricken air not on wifi! That what we paying the high price data plan for! This just piss me off.

I want to download music over the fricken air not on wifi!

I know what you are trying to say, but that line made me chuckle. Just a little. :-)

does anyone know if the PRE's browser allows the user to download mp3 files or any file to the 8gb storage..if so this is only going to stop the honest folk who dont know anything about tech and it might turn away some of those people from buying the phone or going to sprint....SERIOUSLY...what does it take to be a CEO or decision maker of companies now adays....dumb move after dumb move.

if this is true...the one song that i was going to download directly to my phone using amazon, am not going, and just for sprint doing this b*tch move and for amazing allowing them to do this b*tch move, i am not going use amazon MP3 service anywhere (web, phone, etc...)

this is only hurting the honest people that actually want to pay to get music....who the hell wins by doing this dumba$$ move.

I'm quite sure that you not using it isn't going to hurt them one bit.

thank you DR obvious

Lame. Sprint's network should be able to handle this. They probably want to be sure to get their cut. But really, for $70+/month including unlimited data, this is already something I'm paying for.

Very very lame, Sprint. They will let you stream hours of Pandora but not download a single track off the on-device music store, yeah that wont upset users.

I'm sure Sprint just wanted a cut of the purchase if the download would use their network, but that's an incredibly short sighted decision. What good is "the most reliable 3G network" if the carrier cripples the devices to avoid using it for something like this?

ITS ALMOST LIKE SPRINT is trying to become ATT and Verizons cuzins or something....WTF.....first the 5gb cap on laptop cards, then the forcing of the plans, then this sh*t, next they will charge ridicules amounts of money for their plans and offer the ugliest phone selection...cough...VERIZON...cough

This is no big deal, to my understanding Sprint is launching hotspots this year. As someone said, you can purchase with your PC then drag and drop or possibly go directly to the Amazon site. One thing that really stood out when I read the manual, it specifically says the Pre's browser allows you to stream live music from any music streaming website.
