New To the Official App Catalog: [Update: More Apps!]

The official App Catalog for the Palm Pre has crept its way up to 48 total apps with three new additions today:

  • UberPass: a password generator that promises to eventually become a password management solution, from Uberu.
  • Lemonade: Your standard lemonade stand game, requires webOS 1.1, from Game Time for All
  • CoinFlip: two guesses as to what this app does, if you can't pick one guess or the other, this app will probably help.  from InspiringApps, who apparently have a flashlight and level on the way

As always, if the 48 in the official app catalog aren't enough for you, there's plenty in our Homebrew App Gallery, including the just-added classic, Zork I.

Thanks to Todd for the tip!

Update: Gabriel writes in to tell us to take another look, and what do we have here, but more apps! These are the apps that look new to me some may just be updates, though):

  • DirecTV NFL (oh Hell Yes) - Live NFL Sunday Ticket on your Pre
  • Tip 'Em Tip calculator
  • Translator - congratulations Janni Kovacs!!
  • The Globe and Mail - Toronto's daily for you Bell folks.
  • TMaps DC - Transit maps for the DC Area
  • Express Horoscopes from Handmark
  • Zilch Lite - A Dice game
  • Photo Dialer - a dialer app
  • WikiHow - "the best of wikihow"
  • Dumb Waiter - Another Tip Calculator, "With a twist."

Wow. not that thrilling but ok i guess. There's also New apps called:

Express Horoscopes,
WikiHow,
Dumb Waiter
Zilch Lite,
photo Dialer

They need a decent facebook app.

Why a facebook app, normal website is fully functional on the browser! But if you must have an app-like version bookmark http://x.facebook.com

no one wants to hear that so please stop saying it...

because it is the most popular app on most smartphone platforms and it's one of the most popular networking sites there is. It's draws people. It's been a top itunes app for more then a year. I barely use facebook too. But it's like not having airconditioning in a car and saying why do you want it so bad? You can have a car with out it and you won't die but most care buyers want it.

He's not saying you don't need it. He is saying you already have it! Better, actually. Why a separate stripped down app version when you have access to the full site with everything including chat?

'cause the full site does not integrate with the webOS notification dashboard, and a proper app would.

The full site is designed to be navigated with a big screen & kb & mouse, a proper app would have a 320x480 display in mind.

A proper app could integrate chat with Pre's built-in messaging client.

It's amazing that this needs to be explained. A native app would offer many advantages over the desktop web version.

what he said. And i'll add for the simple fact that the competition has if they want to win users and become profitable they need to be as good as the competition. Simple as that.

That analogy is incredibly flawed. A/C in a car can prevent you from getting sick from heat, depending on the location and situation. You're comparing that to having a Facebook app on a phone that can already render the real site? Makes zero sense.

Getting sick from lack of ac in your car? Rarely happens. And using the full site is not the answer to the lack of an app. I for one don't enjoy zooming in and out while panning around the site just to read friends' status updates. Having an app would be a lot easier, so stop making excuses for it not being available.

Have you seen the newest version of the facebook app for the iphone?? It freakin amazing!! The real site is difficult to navigate and that x.facebook site SUCKS. I'm with the other guy I want A DAMN FACEBOOK APP!!!!!! AND I WANT IT NOW!!!

NFL SUNDAY TICKET ON MY PRE!!!! WOWOWOWOWOWOWWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOOW!!!!!

You need to be a Direct TV customer don't you? I tried downloading the app, but I can't register with Direct TV since I am not a customer. So that app seems pretty pointless.

Well it's not pointless to me, since I AM a DirecTV NFL Direct Ticket Superfan subscriber. And it's actually pretty significant, since this is a brand new app for DirecTV that in their ads they were stating would only be available for WinMob and iPhone users (the TV ads specifically show the iPhone), so its a pleasant surprise to see it on the Pre at the same time it comes out for the iPhone. I'm hoping that speaks to how easy it is to port iPhone apps over to the Pre, and we'll get a sudden flood of useful ports from the iPhone community developers.

I'm a Sunday Ticket subscriber too. That's another reason for me to get a Pre! Can't wait until I qualify for phone upgrade and it is on GSM/AT&T! Way to go Palm!!!!

Weren't these three apps already in the Homebrew list? If so, does that mean that Palm is finally accepting some developers' apps into the official catalog now?

Notice that they are no longer available in homebrew. Our first graduates. Sniff. Sniff. I'm all choked up.

I show 50 apps

Whoa floodgates are opening! three more just popped up

The Golbe and mail
TMaps - DC
Translator

it's a WOOT AVALANCHE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah its 50 now

OMG. Sudden app attack!

Bring IT ON Palm!!! You Wanna Play Rough? Ok i'll play rough! Say hello to my little Pre!

OH GOD PLEASE PLEASE GIVE US ANOTHER FOOD APP. PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!

This made me laugh. Kudos.

Good news. We just need a Facebook app.

Translator was originally a homebrew app. Unless he changed his product numbering, homebrew has a newer version.

I also have to say Quick Contacts is so much better than the Photodialer that is in the catalog now.

Might have had to renumber to fit Palm's numbering scheme.

DirecTV sunday Ticket too. Now where is the new food app?

Here comes more baby

DirectTV

Ok, the memory limit sucks. I'm not going to go uninstall a big portion of my sweet homebrew apps so I can install a few Palm Store apps. They need to remove the memory limit ASAP. If Preware can do it, well, enough said.

What's the memory limit? It's got 8GBs of space doesn't it?

Yes, but there is a limit on how much memory is allocated to apps. When you hit that limit (which is roughly 100 apps), you'll get a "Sorry, No Enough Memory - Please delete an application you have installed to make room" error. Same thing happens with Filecoaster app installs. Preware manages to bypass the limit and allows as many installs as available (at this point).

Only if you're using FileCoaster to install the apps. Preware installs to a different folder which isn't subject to the upper limit.

Time to start flooding palm with comments on this - http://www.palm.com/us/company/feedback.html

How do they expect to have people pay for apps, only to have to delete them later to make room for a new app. I think my total is around 84 including all the native and sprint apps and I'm at the limit again.

Just added my two-cents to the link you provided to ask palm to remove this ceiling from thier device.

Just added my comments to the link you provided to ask palm to remove this ceiling from thier device.

welll I have 53 apps installed and the memory limit is coming up what a pile. Now Please just post slingplayer already.

but if you have 8gbs free you can use that for whatever right? its not like you can have 8 free gbs but can only use 200mbs on apps regardless right? besides aren't these things really small anyways? like like maybe the size of a mp3 maybe?

You are clueless, retard.

No, you can't use all 8 Gig for apps. Memory is partitioned. Some used for media, some for applications. Another stupid design decision, Palm.

Palm put a limitation of how many apps you can put on the phoen people claim its 60 but I have 53 and it won't let me put any more

Oh that's fricken garbage! Yes now that i will not stand for. Cause i got Ampache up and running so i don't need to completely fill my pre with music. Though i will keep lots on it but i fully intend to download install more apps then i need to fill that space. I'm going to get them even though i don't want them like free refills.

Nice apps, and to have seen them grow up...AWESOME

Glad to say we seen it first here at PreCentral and hopefully helped input some indeas into the design...I SMELL DISCOUNT!!!! ok maybe not...:(

Anywho...Gratz guys

NOW PALM GIVE ME MORE ROOM
Can't install hardly any of the new apps as I have other apps filling the space allowed, and YES I do use these too. They are bigger in the app catalog then from hombrew...I smell trouble unless this gets fixed.

Also seems that the hombrew selection has stopped...boo hoo...well it was good while it lasted.

Wish I could get rid of the space taken by CRAP APPS...like the ones PALM/Sprint installs then you can't delete them off...BAH..Its my phone, I paid for it, let me decide if your app is good enough to remain in MY space.

Now if only I could actually install more official apps to try these out...

Give us a college football app. It starts tonight damn it!

dumb waiter got the most plain icon ever

No MSN messenger still. How crappy:(

Well well well... Ok- Now can we get that keyboard so we can actually type while in landscape so we don't have to do little circus flips and slides with our phone just to write stuff like; "k"? Please? I said please. I don't say "please" to ANYBODY. Not even my wife. (I don't tell her "sorry" either)

Give. It. A. Rest.

Damn- u've been following me everywhere i go.

I agree! I'm delighted to see the app store growing, but we really do need a keyboard in landscape mode.

I, too, cannot install new official apps because of Palm's size restrictions. I only have 59 apps, including homebrews, and I've reached my limit. This is really annoying, and Palm needs to get this fixed ASAP.

This is lame. The number of programs on my Palm devices have always been limited only by the available memory. And since most use SD cards, that's unlimited.

I see 50. Two more snuck in while you weren't lookin'. Nothing I need / want. But one of them inspired me to work on my own Application, I just need to figure out how to do it.

i like the photo dialer. Keep the apps comming!!

Photo Dialer was just like the homebrew app Quick Contacts. I actually liked Quick Contacts better (more features) but, I gotta go with what is official and replace it with the official one that does the same thing.

I also like the tip calculator and the DirecTV Supercast. I have DirecTV but, don't sub to NFL Sunday Ticket or Super Fan (can't justify the expense just to watch my Packers) so, I can't use it but, at least DirecTV knows the Pre exists so I hope there will be a DVR Scheduler app like the iPhone has.

Keep the great apps coming Palm! Tank you

Why do you have to delete the app that works better for you? is there a reason you can't use the Homebrew one until it gets added to the official catalog.

nb

the DC transit map app is worth as much as a saved image of the metro system since it doesn't integrate with gps to tell you where you are... was excited and now wonder who's coming up with such a worthless app. Hopefully it will update with gps, Chicago and other cities where Google already has the transit system mapped. Are any of these apps worth downloading?!? I'm tired of unused *official* apps on my phone.

Did you pay for the app? If you're not going to be pro-active and create apps yourself that you think are "worth" something, then sit back and enjoy whatever people decide they want to create. People spend their time creating these things and deserve some appreciation. Feedback should be provided but not in a flame type way. Not all apps out there will change the world.

When will we see Twee? Twee was the best twitter app so far and they said its coming to AC. Hope soon.

I wish I had Direct TV now lol

Slightly off-topic:
All screen shots of Prē demonstrate a UI, which looks a lot childish or meant for handicapped people - huge icons, huge fonts...
Is there a possibility to switch to more professional look - where user can get more information on single screen? Especially in contacts, e-mail apps? Apps catalog as well - seeing just 4 apps on one screen is terrible waste of space and time 2 my mind... :-(

The Prē shows 12 apps at a time in the launcher plus 4 in the launch bar, but if you want you can bump it to 20+4.

Go to the homebrew forums, get WebOSQuickInstall that is stickied at the top, and you can use it to set your apps pages to 5x4.

Ive checked the WebosQuickInstall tweaks and I only have the 4x4 option.

These apps as still, with very few exceptions, squarely in the light weight, need I say "trivial" category. I mean, really, who needs an app to flip a coin? At this rate the quality to fluff ratio is going to be worse than Apple's Crap Store. If Palm can't get some serious bug fixes and functionality enhancements for the Pre out soon, and some quality, business class apps in the catalog, I fear for the Pre's (and Palm's) long term survival.

Hey...

The COOL thing about that coinFlip thing is that u can use shake... like to see that more in future apps. Thats GREAT!!

webOS 1.2 is almost HERE!!!

QuickContacts (HomeBrew) is far superior to PhotoDialer (Apps Catalog). With QC you can press and hold on a contact to get more options, including SMS and alternate numbers. With PD, is you want both your wifes work and cell number as a quickdial contact you have to setup two PhotoDialer entries.
QC also seems to load a little faster.

QuickContacts is still avail in the FileCoaster cat (as of 8/7) so get it while you can.
