New demo shows the strength of Classic

A few days ago, the folks at MotionApps released a new list of FAQs, this one much more technical than the last. One anonymous user commented on our PreCentral post about it with this rather astute observation:

OK, so there's no bundles audo codecs, but Motion Apps have yet to mention whether Classic supports SOUND!

None of the demos have showcased any audio. This is not about running PocketTunes - it's about games. Warfare Inc, etc, will just be curiosities without audio.

We need to know!

Well now we know!  The above video was posted yesterday on MotionApps' blog and really shows how much progress they've made.  A game like GTS: World Racing is a perfect example of how vital of a gaming resource Classic could end up being.  Great sound effects, smooth graphics, and boy am I loving how the card view stays live. However the sound support isn't complete.  According to MotionApps:

We have been working on getting sound support in Classic and have made some good progress. It is still early in the process and more remains to be done but we expect to make it solid in time for public release.

Regardless, I'm impressed and thrilled at how responsive they are being about Classic's development.

Thanks to Francis for the tip!

Sprint just came out with a page hyping up the demo! Check it out!

Sprint: Meet the Palm Pre:

if, its not a fake , why the dock have only 4 icons ????

i am pretty sure that they said the dock would be able to be customized. so i dont see why they would make you have five if you only want four...

The Mundu IM application visible in the Classic launcher has my interest piqued. Provided it was there as a working example, it looks like Classic applications will be able to access the network. If Mundu IM works like it does now on Garnet, then Classic applications may be able to send and receive data in the background.
Classy :).

Wow, I'm also just stoked that MotionApps is
1 - Proactively working to make Classic a significant tool instead of just a novelty. (not sarcasm)
2 - Listening/responding to the scuttle about how Classic needs to work on the Pre.

Now, please, can you make it HotSync with a pc??

Sprint keeps hypeing their "Now" network. Why can't we have the Pre release date "Now".

Get over hotsync. It is not going to happen. You are not getting the point of the device. its about classic getting apps to work on the phone. It has nothing to do with transferring the data to a computer.

Easy tiger.

So...the point is to be able to play games?

I just need a bridge until some solid apps that I depend on can be replaced in webOS. Oh, and not every person wants every bit of his or her data in the cloud.

I noticed that the demo-er was consistently aiming high when trying to tap UI elements. When I've tried using the iPhone, I encountered this same problem. Thoughts on whether there will be any way to calibrate a 'tap offset', or is this just something to which one has to acclimate?

that is a very good question. hope that they would allow you to calibrate the touch. i not a big fan of just acclimating w/o actually solving the problem. like driving and your tires are not in line so you begin to curve to the right when you dont hold the steering wheel and have to constantly hold the steering wheel slightly to the left to keep the car going straight. i mean eventually it would become second nature to do so, but it still doesnt solve the problem... and rant over... just something that bugs me.

Is graffiti supported?

The device acts primarily like a Centro or Treo. They don't have Graffiti. The capacitive screen and finger operation would make it close to impossible to use, anyway.

But you have a physical keyboard, which in most cases is an optimal solution.

The Centro/Garnet-based Treos *do* have Graffiti libraries. They're just not designed for input via Graffiti, so you need a third-party app to enable Graffiti entry on the screen.

Now, since some older apps require Graffiti-based entry (the menu stroke--not all apps are coded to recognize other methods, and some of those don't have a title bar), the question is whether they'll work in Classic. If you try installing an app like Graffiti Anywhere, are the libraries there for it to access?

Yes, most apps will use the keyboard. Not all work with it, though--just the way not all of them recognize it on a Centro or Treo.

The real question is whether classic is going to be bundled with the Pre or will it be an option. If it's the latter, how much will it cost?

The first thing I'll try in "Classic" is CaSTaway, the Atari ST emulator for Palm. Yes I know it probably won't work, but wouldn't it be amazing if it did? I already think its amazing that I can play Dungeon Master and Sundog on my Treo, but if these old Atari ST games work on "Classic" I will wet my pants!

now we know who has and test these pre most of the onboard 3 party developers that great ..
