I need an xbox360 app.
Can someone make a shazam app like the iphone. That would be useful.
$1.43? That's a pretty awesome price.
.7 (dev's cut) x $1.43 = (about) $1. The developer just wanted a dollar a download...
I really wanted a 1 player backgammon game and have been waiting patiently. When I saw backgammon in the list I was excited. So I went to the app catalog.
1) There is only mention of 2 player game on precentral
2) There is only mention of 2 player game on app catalog
3) The two reviews reveal nothing
4) There is no trial mode
5) There are no screen shots
6) So I click on "developer home" in the app catalog and it takes me to a completely useless, Flash-only site.
7) So I go to my Linux desktop and pull up blueswitch.com. Yep, an extremely irritating Flash site with zero useful information.
What a wonderful experience. Guess I will keep waiting

Thanks jhoff! If YOU are able to post a video about it, why can't the author? Strange.
Anyway, I saw your review on both the app catalog and comments on YouTube. You are "disappointed" in the app but don't say why. Inquiring minds want to know why!
Well, I think the biggest thing is the visuals - that it promises "beautiful graphics" and then looked pretty crappy in the actual game, in my opinion.
In other issues, the options have something about a doubling cube but I couldn't figure out how to do that. The sound plays no matter what I have the setting on.
I don't know, it just feels to me like someone threw something together quick, and put a very nice looking title screen in there, then intentionally didn't show images of the actual game because they knew it wasn't as good looking.
It just feels like some slight deception to me.
Oooh, the sound thing is a bummer- especially since it has a sound setting in the sucker! I guess as a work-around you can turn on the vibrate switch? (Does that even help?) I see you updated your review with that info- a good idea. Make sure to contact the author, of course.
In your app catalog review, you said it is not full screen. But it does look full screen on your video- just landscape. Am I missing something?
The doubling cube is something that comes up only when needed. If you seem to have an advantage over your opponent, you can turn the doubling cube to double the bets- your opponent can accept the challenge or resign. Of course, I don't know if it works that way in his app, but that is the way it has worked in all the backgammon games I have seen.
As for the looks- it isn't gorgeous, but it is a lot prettier than the backgammon on my Treo :)
I wish there was a way on this dern forum/site to send private messages, moderate comments, and get notifications. Oh well.
Full screen as in no status bar at the top either. It shows that way in the screenshots, but not in the actual app. And the buttons in the screenshots are much taller (easier to press) than the actual buttons.
Every other landscape application gets rid of the status bar. (And some portrait games as well).
And yeah, I've played games with a doubling cube before, but can't figure out how to actually use it in this.
Ok, now I'm really getting pissed off. There are now more apps available that I can't get from the app catalog than I can get!!!! What is the problem with us Canadians paying for apps as well, even if they are sh*t apps. we only have 118 apps up here!!!!! damn this makes me mad
As well, why the hell do they still advertise the calendar late notification if the damn thing is not available!! Seems like false advertising to me. Starting to regret the Palm Pre purchase
Boy do I feel great on a Saturday morning! LOL
I shared the same frustration my fellow Canuck!I am through phoning Bell, they don't have any clues whatsoever about the Palm pre and they only sell them,PERIOD!!!!!I told Bell maybe our palm PREs are generic clones,LOL'
+100
My credit card works in the USA. Hell, I can buy something on the internet from the other side of the planet and have it shipped to my doorstep. How difficult can it really be to let Canadians access paid apps???
Wow this app limit problem is frustrating!
Preware will solved your problems, fair-Dimkum.(sorry about the spelling)
crxssi, someone made a video of the Backgammon game play. See post 8 here: http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre/212286-more-apps-catalog-10-30-a.html
I would say enjoy, but I don't think you will. There is a reason the developer left out screen shots.
I have color match . Why is not showing that there's an update ?
I'm so glad I saved the mind master homebrew... anyone know if palm is going to kill it?
WOW, more crap apps!!! Anything worth having was released back in June (Pandora :P)... no wonder Palm's stock is taking a dive... I've been waiting since release day for a stupid FaceBook App!!! But it doesn't matter any more because come next Friday I am porting back to Verizon for the DROIIIID!!!! Resistance is Futile.
I'll take the pre off your hands ;)
I am still under the 30 day return policy. But I will sell my:
Seidio 2600 mah battery and door
seidio innocase for extended battery
seidio screen protector
extra Palm plug / usb cable
Seidio Extended Battery Leather Case
Authentic Sprint Palm Pre Car Charger
I may put it as a package on eBAY.
put it on ebay. send a link so that we can confirm. my bet you are not telling the truth about having a palm pre.
I'm starting to turn sour on Palm. I love the webOS. Perhaps Palm is clueless about how to get things going. Perhaps the phone has no mojo.
If Palm is going to continue to be lame on basic & wanted features they need to announce a timeline of when we can expect when what we want will be available. Secrecy aint working for Palm. We can't afford it. We don't have the base that other formats have. People are jumping ship.
if samsung moment were available and I could trade my phone I probably would. Or maybe I'd just get over the physical keyboard thing. But, i'm not into wasting $$$ and I'm not sure Sprint would subsidize another phone for me so soon.
I'm tired of being featureless (in many ways) and simultaneously in the dark. The webOS multitasking is so awesome tho. This phone truly couldve been an iphone killer or at least a real competitor with long lasting buzz..... we'll see. I'm going to stick it out, but if I can convince Sprint to subsidize another phobe I might get tempted
funny. i got over my physical keyboard thing too recently. lol. regardless i think the phone is decent. Palm is not a good company.
This has been Palm's one big downfall... Their marketing division (which I assume is partly behind the releasing of programs on their App Catalog) has really made some bad decisions, from the announcement of the Palm (as opposed to when it FINALLY was made available for purchase) to the lag in App development.
We do need to keep in mind however, that it does take time to develop these Apps. Iphone didn't have a plethora of apps when it first came out. It took quite some time before they had a catalog worth boasting about.
As for me, I'm very happy with my Palm and have no desire to abandon ship at the present time.
I've already put my $50 down at Best Buy and am jumping ship next Friday Nov 6th. I agree it's clueless this secrecy when this is supposed to be a open source device. None of the WebOS software team are talking to anybody. They put out a phone that works, but with very little polish. They have been letting all the community make updates to things that they haven't done, have not put the polish on, and that they need to update / fix. Why have they not officially released the on screen keyboard. What smartphone really doesn't have one by default, Palm Pre. Like you said, we should have been getting more information about whats being updated fixed and when. Let me emphasize that these "around the way" homebrew and app catalog programmers can put out all these polished apps, updates, fixes, and then what is the capability of the current WebOS Software team? I disagree that you should only concentrate on the major fixes. These app writers are cranking out the polish like its nobodies business and that shouldn't have to be. I even question, these disgruntled (if they are) employees from Apple that work at Palm, is this the quality of work that they did at Apple and is why their no longer there? Or maybe they were doing a good job, then later quit, and or were fired. It's like you can hear crickets. Google has the money and resources to pay the programmers and higher quality ones. Is it about money, does Palm not have the money to put into software development and are they not highering the caliber of employees that they should because of financial hardships? The end result we see is a excellent running device with 5 shortcut icons on the bottom of the screen, desktop space with nothing there, no polish, very little app releases, a great community, and a sinking ship which is Sprint / Palm heading to bankruptcy or being bought out.
you obviously do not have a palm. really, on screen kb. the pre has had that for months now. where have you been. you can not really have a palm?
Palm has never released the keyboard officially, its not readily available as a function without third party apps, and they have not put any polish on it. What other current smartphone can you say that about?
I do have a Palm Pre, I'm selling my accessories pretty soon as a package on eBAY.
put it on ebay. then put the link on this site. like I said i cal your bluff. you do not have a pre. talk is cheap and theball is in your call put up or shut up
Wow, you must think I'm just someone from the Droid camp coming on here but that's not the case. Although, soon I will be :) Sorry if I gave you that impression. I'll try to get it linked for you. I'm not trying to challenge you, because I don't need to. I can see why you would think that though.
I Love to get some apps from the catalog but I have no more room I would like palm to fix this asap
The third party homebrew writers and the app catalog WebOS writers seem to be the software staff at Palm.
Kingcobra2010, I just did a search for you name and can see that you sent that article about the Palm stock. So, now it's even more obvious why you think the way that you do. I made the decision to jump ship about 3-4 days ago.
really, why you guys from droid should go back . so now you change the subject with a lie. put the pre on ebay you little droid fanboy. I do not have to destroy your little droid with scare tactics and lies. The real test is coming. people want real internet anytime and every where. well to bad your little droid phone can not do that. Here at precentral we will accept you back after you falter. do not worry. no put the phone on ebay if you really have the phone?
In my original message I stated that I have a 30 day return policy for the pre. I'm taking the Pre back to the Sprint Store for a full refund and termination of service. I'm selling my accessories on Ebay, because I can't return them as their from a third party Seidio Authorized Ebay Seller.
What lies have I told?
And yes I did buy that much stuff. Although, I'm not selling my Izel Smartphone Tv stand (kickstand). I'm going to use that for the Droid.
I do not care about stocks that is for con artist and swindlers. now put the phone on ebay. dude it is becoming very obvious that you are a lier. stop rambling do what you said you are going to do.
You keep saying phone and I keep saying: ACCESSORIES. :)
go ahead and put all the accessories on ebay. stop rambling. send the link that all I have to say. My call you are lying about having a pre.
I just put all of my Seidio Accessories for my Palm Pre up on eBAY. I have a perfect feedback rating. I also appreciate that you not believing me kind of gave me a kick in the pants to list these items on eBAY. ha :) Here is the link:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230394277276
In the style of Christopher Walken, "Wow! That's crazy" I guess AC1 put up and others had to shut up... lol, just kidding I don't want everyone flipping.
yea he probably did buy a pre. dude you really need to get an iphone. the palm pre is currently way to advanced for you. I would not get the droid either. really magnet beads from ebay? that is strange. word of advice get the iphone. you are not ready for the pre or the droid. Not to be rude but if you buy a pre or droid you probably need to mod the phone to get some function. if you are not ready for that, then go with the iphone. You are going to run into problems with the droid as well. The only good thing about apple is that if you do not know what you are doing, you can always trust that they will take over. They limit that phone so that there is no problems but that limits functionality. less function equals less headache. Go with the iphone. get your feet wet then think about coming to palm with it stabilizes like apple. right now it is mainly for computer techies. I would never advise someone that is not computer literate to a fair degree to get the palm right know. Still in transition but come back later because the future of the product is grand.
I wasn't stating that I don't know how to mod or am afraid of it. :) I was simply saying that the Palm Community should not have to be doing necessary visual modifications, functionality, fixes, and polish to the Palm Pre.
Seriously, if you are not comfortable with sdk and linux, then you are probably better off with iphone. Droid is a little smoother than plam right know since it has gone through several updates but you run the risk of having problems again. If I were I would either get the iphone or if your service does not have it may be the winmo (man I would never use that os but for beginners it is a start). Give palm 3 more months and they should have more features standard so that yo do not have to mod the phone. Like you if you have kids, it can tell you exactly were they are on the net. So say you get lost going to somebodies house, you give your family member a special ip and it can give them your gps location so that they can direct you or come and pick you up. But you have to mod the phone. if somebody steals you phone you can also track it. since it is not a program thay can not erase it unless they flash the phone.
Cool right. there are a lot more features but they are not standard and you have to mod some codes to get more functionality. This make me slightly more interested in ubuntu
I agree. The Palm Pre is a great phone. The phone (like the name)feels excellent in your Palm. I don't like the outside hardware, but the inside hardware is excellent. The Pre has the Cortex A8 Processor, which is the same as the Iphone 3GS and the Droid.
I love the modding of the Palm Pre. I have seen companies go down because of money issues. Many in the community have supported this product, I would hate if something happened and only the community supported this product.
On the PC it reminds of the graphic card company 3DFX vs Nvidia. Everyone loved 3dfx at one time and they were innovators. Then they got to a point where they were not putting out anything that pushes the envelope. Just releasing products that would give them a shot, to stay in the game. They didn't have the money and they hit a wall innovation wise.
Nvidia would always beat 3dfx to the gate, make a more innovative graphic card product, and was pulverizing 3dfx in sales.
So, the new 3dfx CEO gives a press conference and gives a positive stock outlook for future. Then money struggling 3dfx managed to get number 1 selling pc graphic card at the time, seemed like they were on their way out of ruin.
The problem was it was too little and too late. The latest graphic card was good, but it wasn't a high end product, wasn't innovative, and that would not bring enough sales. So, then Nvidia decided to give up the graphics business and sell to Nvidia. Nvidia didn't use 3dfx chips. They just used some of the technologies with their own hardware in future products.
I see partly the same problem with Palm. They just aren't profitable enough. It takes time to be profitable. They are not putting out the high end product that they should be putting out. The Droid is a good example of competition. They don't just match features, have inferior outside hardware, but they actually raise the bar with some better hardware features.
Do not know much about 3dfx (do not even remember them). I was more an ati vs nvidia. Droid is ok but it is following in winmo foot steps by putting its os on several devices but it just is not good. It is a bulky os that really is based on a prototype of winmo (hefty sloppy and half hazard design of its os). Whereas palm is based more on apples iphone concept but with an open os. Most importantly it is organized OS similar to the apple os. Not totally developed but there is huge capability. I will not deny it is has an iphone feel. I like apple but they can restrict my computer a little but I will not let them restrict my phone. That is crossing the line. I want the full net, I want serious mods, and I want optimization which is what pre provides that iphone does not. Pre is a netbook replacement you guys just do not know it. Iphone could have done it but that greed is getting in the way. Basically why a less superior os windows is on the top and os x is on the bottom even though for the great majority of people os 10.6.2 (future) is the best option (not for businesses -> for the masses). Really most people should not use windows because it is bulky, sloppy and packed with more features that the average user needs or is aware of.
Why do you think apple is going after palm so hard and really has not gone after droid so much? Because it is their streamlined concept in another device. Apple knows after people play with the droid, they will be running back to apple. You play with a winmo and then ipnone -> who wins iphone. winmo sucks. droid sucks. iphone was good but now palm is king.
Nice write up. I like modding my smartphone, but it doesn't have to be to the extent of the Palm Pre. Although, I would prefer it. Of course Android is based off Linux. The reviewers are putting it to the test and it's coming out a winner. They have said that this is the smoothest Android experience to date and what it should have been like at Android Launch (just like the Palm Pre is didn't quite reach the mark set before launch). This Droid Android device, they say is about as good of a competitor as your going to get. The momentum, money, and the people seem to be flocking to Android. I don't think you have had a Droid, or have a had one long enough in your hands to say it sucks. I am into Gadgets. The Droid is a better gadget outer and inner hardware wise. Plus it's worry some that some of the major software companies are not designing apps for the Pre. We have........ "Air Hockey". Look at the flow of apps being made every day to the competitors. I question if the companies see at Palm an inappropriate amount of enthusiasm, profit margin, and are skipping it for the other more profitable Smartphone devices thats winning the hearts of the people. The developers do want to get paid.
What is Palm the king of? They have a fast, thinly designed WebOS, but what are they doing with? What hardware are they aligning it with that can compete with the Droid and the Iphone? What money do they have to do so? Not to mention, because WebOS is a "web" "os" they need to design something special into the OS before they can get game performance near the Iphone 3GS, even know it has the same Cortex A8 processor as the Droid and Iphone. Palm may have the fastest thinly designed OS, but the majority of the public will decide who is the king of the hill for mass appeal and the hardcore sector in smartphones.
Hi AC1, What do you think the Jailbreak has done for the Iphone? I for once bought the Iphone 3G (9 mths ago) because of the Jailbreak and most of the people too.I had my Pre for few weeks now and when i used the Iphone yesterday, man! it was awfully tedious to change from 1 app to other. Also,i called my iphone 3G "Freezer" because it to like freeze alot,LOL'really! I am so spoilt by the Pre.(may i use the words, User friendly)
Btw,they're 100,000 apps now? most of them are repetition of others.I downloaded about 98 apps and most of them are from the Jailbreak apps.I maybe used the apps 2 or 3 times.
You know, Kingcobra2010 knows what he is talking about.Give the Pre some time, it is going to be a great phone.
I know he does. My big concern is money wise can Palm and Sprint money wise last that long? I'm sure that the Palm Pre can go on without Palm. There won't be anymore Palm Pre official updates. The WEBOS could probably end up being hacked by unofficial WebOS developer group and attempt to put out it's own updates.
Incorrect. Palm has many revenue sources other than selling Pres to Sprint. They sell the Pre to Bell, O2, Telefonica, etc. They will have the Pixi on Sprint. Then they'll release the Pre to Verizon, then to AT&T. Then the Pixi will get foreign acceptance.
In addition to selling just phones, Palm will be making money from accessories, specifically the Touchstone (a GREAT investment for any owner of a WebOS device) and Pixi's "artist covers". Then there's the App Catalog. They could stop selling Pres and make enough money from the App Catalog to turn a profit. Once the devs make a profit off one app, they'll create another quality app. But the truth of the matter is that Palm's not gonna stop selling phones.
Nobody offers something as st00pendously simple as WebOS with gesture area, hardware keyboard, slide-out portrait keyboard, that's so frickin' gorgeous, feels great, has a Touchstone to charge it on since you'll need to do that often with the multitasking, synergy, backups, app catalog, homebrew, universal search, gps, quality camera (5 MP does NOT equal quality; 5 MP is strictly a marketing term to fool ignorant consumers)... DID I MISS ANYTHING?!? What device has all that in such a beautiful form factor?
The Pre seems like a 2-year hardware platform if you ask me. It's missing a compass and that's it. The compass is more of a gimmick for most people. Sky Map for Android looks pretty cool, but chances are you live somewhere that gets 3G service... and since that's the case, you probly have light pollution and can't actually use Sky Map for its intended purpose. Then there's Layar... unless you're a real estate agent, it's mostly a gimmick. I could definitely live 2 years without a compass, until the Palm Post is released.
I do agree that there is money to be made outside the states. The Pre needs to be a hit there and not be knocked off by an Android device that betters it's features.
Palm could only be profitable off the APP Store if the device is a hit and enough Apps are being made to draw people. So far, I'm not seeing the app development happening on a wide scale. Furthermore, I am not seeing much coming from the big boy developers, which is worrisome.
Yes. I agree about the WEBOS. Unfortunately, everybody would not agree about the keyboard. It is ok for women. But for a large population of the men, that is a very uncomfortable keyboard with the size of those keys. I think it was silly to release a keyboard with keys that small. Also, I can't understand why Cnet and other publications when they got to try the Pre at shows they didn't say anything about it. If they did, maybe palm would have made a design change. Then after it is out and it gets in people hands, then they have the displeasure of pecking on those little micro keys. Then there is a different opinion about the keyboard. Not to mention, the reviewers who tried the Pre at the shows, should have never let Palm get away with only puting 8GB and no SD slot. They should have brought that to the surface. Also, the outer design of the Pre was excellent. The problem is the cheap outer hardware and plastic screen.
Well, I hope that they don't think that they are are an Apple and try to not significantly upgrade there hardware in 2 years. Apple, Palm is not. The hardware needed to be better to compete in this current competitive enviroment. Let's be honest. Palm is not profitable. It takes a good period of time of successes to be profitable. They are just getting a shot in the arm to keep them going right now, if that because of the disappointing sales compared to what was projected and expected. That is making the stock nose dive. Look at the stock chart and look at the steady decline on the Palm Stock.
If Palm has the money, I hope they have a Palm Pre refresher than can compete in the labs.
Also concerning the apps, I think you make a good point. My point though was some of the higher quality stuff coming from the big boys doesn't seem to be making it's way to the Palm Pre as of yet.
How long did it take Apple to release their SDK?
Palm's SDK is still incomplete. Perhaps they should've waited until it was "perfect", but then nobody would've bought a Pre and they would've failed. Their SDK is adequate now... but they will release their full-blown SDK before the 1-yr mark, and you will be WOWed at what the Pre can do.
Owning a Pre will be a beautiful thing to watch all the evolutionary steps take place within the OS, taking advantage of the powerful hardware you don't even realize exists.
Well. This is true. Although, Palm needs to be cranking out the updates with Polish. This they have not been doing. The OS visually looks the same and the community is putting out the necessary fixes and somewhat polish.
In this current environment, Palm needs a refresher product that can compete. When Palm Pre comes to Verizon, I'll skip this generation. In the future, if Palm is still around, I will see what they have to offer in the refresher product and or the Next Generation product hardware wise. I'll also see if the community has really grown, or if it stays a small tight knit community.
yea he probably should not own a palm pre anyway. he should think about iphone. smartphone but not really. note no images still suspect the guy is a flake. i can make a listing without images of a dodge viper. nice but still not real. still not convinced.
come high price on ebay. I do ebay. no way it will sell for that price. ebayers want half price of anything even if it is new.
Thanks for the post. I was in a rush to get the items up and post it here, I forgot a few items: Here is the items I forgot and new the sub total on what everything is worth:
5: Authentic Sprint Palm Compatible Mcro-USB Vehicle Charger $34.99
6: Extra Authentic Palm Pre Home charger and USB cable (NEW) $14.50
This bundle would cost new: $187.33 (plus taxes if applicable) and plus cost for shipping. LESS THAN HALF PRICE.
Hmm, so unless I am a computer geek, do commandline, I should get an iPhone? I am sure that is Palm and Sprints plan as well... I have used the iPhone, boring but clean and it works. No I didn't jailbreak it. Also had a HTC TP, fun phone, lots of useful apps, no need to jailbreak anything to us apps, now I have the Pre, which I like, but this fanboy crap is too much. It's a flippin phone, it makes calls and txt. Odd how people feel the need to attack others via the web and boards, so 2000... The guy feels the Moto Droid is a possible ph for him and you flair up on him. You should take up a relaxing hobby.
Thanks PreCentral for some great news, forums and the store, used all of it and happy with the site, minus the noise. I will wait it out for Palm to get things happening.
Thank You dthurman for some intelligent words. Some of these geeks need to get a life .... or at least a job and be constructive not destructive.
Yeh , i like the Pre - but it's a phone not your girl friend.
For all those who didn't understand that last comment and have a blank look.... nevermind.
I am waiting the arrival of my new pre. Is there somewhere that I can see a list of paid apps from my computer. I could not find it on palm web site or here. I do plan on using apps from here but would like to get an idea as to what is available. Thanks
Did this ever get answered..... anywhere ?
I would also like to view (on my computer) a list of Paid Apps.
Thanks
ekurek
LMAO at KingCobra getting his lunch handed to him and still feeling salty at AC1. AC1 made legitimate complaints to which kingcobra got emotional and insinuated that AC1 doesn't know anything about tech products and he should go the way of the iphone cause its for people without much knowledge on how to operate a smartphone.
KingCobra, just fall back. AC1 made legitimate gripes about Palm, even some I have about my pre.( and if you wanna challenge me on that I can YOUTUBE it...lol). Some people get so emotional over a phone. Its really disgusting.
That Chameleon App could go from being a good App to GREAT APP if its developers could find a way to incorporate ON/OFF of WiFi when the phone goes into certain areas. Imagine when you go to work, the background changes and WiFi turns on automatically. Then when you leave, it turns off to save battery.
