New in the App Catalog for 27 November 2009

App CatalogHonestly, we expected that the guys and gals at Palm would have taken the holiday weekend off - and we wouldn't blame them, it's clear they've been working hard for months on end - but apparently we were wrong. Yesterday brought us two updated applications. Sure, it's not a huge stack of apps like before, but somebody had to come in on the Friday after Thanksgiving to do it.

Updated apps:

  • Dot Game, Free
  • Send My Location for webOS, Free

snoozefest...

ok, so what is the deal with these "updated" apps? This is the third time the Dot Game has shown up as "updated" but it still at version 0.9.3. How exactly was this "updated" when this is the same version I installed months ago!

I cry foul and say this is just an "update" that makes it look like Palm is doing something other than just twiddling their collective thumbs...

Likewise the send my location app is the same version that I installed several days ago.

Derek, I respectfully ask you to refrain from posting these unless there really is an "update". If you can't do that can you get in touch with Palm and find out why these non-update "updates" continue to appear in the app catalog?

Don't get mad at me; get mad a Palm for publishing "updates" that are something as simple as a new description or an updated icon. We don't have the time or ability to go back and check what has changed since the last submission.

Sorry Derek, didn't mean to indicate I was mad at you, you are doing an admirable job, one we are all thankful for.

Do we know that updating an icon or description is enough to trigger the update to appear in the app catalog as an "update"?

It is.

I'm going to assume that such a minor update after being downloaded also further skews the download count of the app making it appear to have been purchased more then it has?

Derek, I seriously appreciate all your hard work and all the articles that you do write. Thank you so much and please realize The majority of us Really appreciate all your hardwork and effort. Thank you again! :-D

Meh.. articles are just 'okay'. This site is better for it's community.

As one who writes many of these articles... I concur.

ha! well played, derek

That "community" isn't always so gracious when you tell the truth in your articles if it results in being critical of Palm, though are they? Community if fine but i'm here more for info. Keep writing decent articles. They are appreciated. Especially when you don't pull punches.

Agreed. I also saw "Dot Game" as being updated, but I have this version, and when I checked the "updates" icon, it says my phone is up to date already.

I haven't been able to access the app catalog since yesterday. I keep getting: App Catalog Unavailable, Try Again Later!

Okay! The App Catalog is working now!

yes Derek goes far for palm please monsieur Derek soit calm as we say in paris
yes we all want hefty success for Rubstein and co they still playing second fiddle to Jobs and co when i think they havent even thought about france the one money grabber for iphone in europe i harbor some reservations about their future plans all this bragging about webos all we get is two updates and monsieur shouts kudos

Forget the update stuff - PALM is getting pretty boring with the apps. Nothing near as cool as some of the other app stores, eh hem!

I feel you and as difficult as it may be, you gotta remember that the App Catalog is still "Beta".. Plus Palm will be allowing anyone to start developing for webOS starting in December so hopefully we'll see a few more useful apps. I'm getting sick of seeing new Tip Calculators and $5 Fart Apps... It's a joke.

Just because Palm is opening up it's development program to everyone doesn't necessarily mean we'll get good apps though. We're gonna need a new SDK, GPU functionality, etc before the real good apps come.

In the meantime, enjoy homebrew and patches from the webOS community!

i wish the check i paid to sprint had some form of beta. where i could not give them some of the money and say, "yeah it's a beta check." When i remove the beta stamp i'll give you all the money. I'm sure they'd love that one.

Yep. How exactly is an update an update if it's NOT updated?
That's like telling my wife, "Hey babycakes, it won't happen again, I've changed (updated)". She KNOWS she's still stuck with the same 'version' of me, DBD.

lol, I think there are plenty of internet forums to discuss that one.

You're right, Mikey. Heh heh heh. :)

blah blah blah can't add apps blah blah blah fix the memory limit blah blah blah.

Yup, fix it yourself.

That's not all the way done, but I'll figure out how to get the "Guest Additions" working in no time, so that you can transfer the meta'd-doctor thru a shared folder.

@theyams blah blah blah fix it yourself blah blah

They probably did take the weekend off, and some apps just volunteered to shout 'updated! updated!' for no apparent reason whatsoever. The larger part of the world is still stuck with a marginal App Catalog. You call this hard work?

monsieur Derek on this you are right palm is to have our anger not you, know we still love you monsieur but please take care, temper your palmspeak

Just to clear up the confusion. Whenever a developer goes into the system and updates their description, price, or any meta-data for that matter, it will show up in the recent section for that day. The meta-updates use to take about 7 days, they are now taking a few hours. It appears that it is now automated for those types of updates. Now whether you think it should show up in the recent section for that type of update is another thing. As a developer I like it, especially when I put my app on sale like I did for the Thanksgiving weekend (btw this is the last day to get Pack 'n' Track on sale :) ) as it gives people a chance to see it.

arcticus, yes I saw your app update and noticed you put the "on sale" description on it. Perhaps Palm should require a "what's updated" section so we can see that they just changed the meta-data. Otherwise it is just plain confusing.

If just a description change can trigger an update, what exactly are we downloading when we hit the 'update now' button? The same exact thing? Wow.

It appears there is no update button unless the version changes. That is how you know that even tho the app appears to be updated it really isn't.

Oh yeah, i forgot about that. It would say, 'tap to launch', but still be in the 'recent' section of the catalog, even though nothing really changed. Sorry 'bout that. But what exactly chg'd in Gdial Pro today? It said 'update available' and let me download a 'so-called' update. It seems the same to me.

Just wanted to saythat you are doing a great job here. thank you for all that oyu have done.

As the developer of dot game, I can tell you the update was just to the metadata. Palm asked me to open it up for UK, Germany, Ireland, etc. So I did.

Dear developer, your dot game is great and the community is so lucky that you've released it for free!

Please keep posting about ALL app store additions. It's the easiest way to keep tabs on what's going on.

It must be hard work, especially on days when dozens of new apps are added.

Thanks.

I am really surprised at the ack of quality apps coming out. basic games, fart machines, tip calculators just don't do it for me. I think it is time for the developers to start putting out apps that can propel this phone to the next level. Let's get the camcorder app done, flash working, and some solid business tools.
