I'm Tired of these calculators, trivias and toy apps...

we can no longer update all apps at once?? Fail

It seems as if the nature of the SDK is more conducive to developers creating garbage apps than even the App Store. Self Aware has managed to put out two very robust apps though, so other developers just need to take the cue from them and invest some time into making apps that are legitimately useful.

I think the problem is actually that the barriers to entry into the Catalog are too low. As crazy as that sounds, the ease of programming for webOS has permitted people who really have no place as legitimate developers to flood the Catalog with garbage that will never be downloaded more than 100 times. The problem with webOS being so easy to program for is that everyone starts thinking they're a programmer, when in reality they're releasing something that a 12th grader would make in his Computer Science class. Then they believe that they have the right to charge $4.99 for it; give me a break.

never thought of it that way, but good points

Yep, what we get now is a bunch of crap by folks who only know how to do javascript. Some yahoos even come on the forums and claim you can do 'anything' with javascript, we don't need anything else. You know right away those folks only know one language.

We need a real SDK so we can get real programmers making real apps. PLEASE.

Did you see the estimate of the total amount earned, at this point, by App Catalog developers a few articles down? $100K. For the whole Catalog. I'm wondering what is going to compel the "legitimate developers" you are speaking of to spend their valuable time and effort developing high-quality apps for the App Catalog, especially when users who actually buy apps probably have hit their memory limit. There is still no word from Palm about when this will get fixed so I would expect WebOS app development to slow down to a trickle.

I haven't bought a single app, because there is nothing there worth buying. The only apps I use regularly off the app catalog are free, and I've donated to a couple of them. We also know that there are on the order of a million Pre owners, which means that the vast majority of them have bought nothing.

My guess is Pre owners really aren't that much cheaper than iPhone users, who buy a lot more apps (http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/09/06/how-much-does-an-iphone-user-spend-...), it's just that there is nothing engaging for offer to draw them in.

Once we start getting worthwhile apps, some of us who haven't bought anything might start making purchases.

Build decent apps, and the customers will come. Build a bunch of crap translators, and 'spot the difference in the images' apps, and they stay away in droves.

all I know is that Palm needs to open up the SDK already and allow use of the mic. I'm ready for a voice recorder and Shazam app. Would be nice if we could have an app to attach files (media like ringtones) to MMS messages too...or maybe even a file manager app. I know it would take some change in the programming but these would be more useful to the majority of WebOS users than calculators and trivia apps.

+1 for Shazam... that is the one app that makes me envy my iPhone-toting friends. We won't see the truly great apps until developers are allowed to unlock the potential of this hardware. Get that mic, camera, and 3D accelerator into an API soon!

Im tired of some gay apps, but when adobeflash comes out everything ll be better, way better yea

Um, "gay"?

"Gay" is a common expression suggesting general criticism, similar to "stupid", "dumb", "ridiculous", etc.

No, Gay, when used in this way, is a slur. It may not be how you intended it, but that demonstrates the ignorance of those who use it this way more than anything else.

Is anyone having problems with TweeFree??? When I updated it today, it just idles when I try to look at my TIMELINE or my followers timeline...it worked great until i updated it, can someone help?

Guys, they're working on the SDK. They know what they're doing. I know it's a pain but give it time.

Yeah, let's hear it for the apologists. First, there is zero evidence Palm intends to open up the SDK to allow low level access, which is going to be necessary for apps that really compete with Android and the iPhone. Second, there's no evidence Palm is capable of getting it right. Third, if Palm expects us to wait too much longer, there will be no one left who cares enough to write serious apps. Palm's window of opportunity shrinks with every new Android phone, and app, delivered.

You guys need to take a look at NewsRoom.

THAT is what a webOS app is supposed to look like. It could use a bit of work, but that's what they're supposed to look like.

Developers, too!!! Take note.

I still can't update or download.... When I try it puts a notification that said "update cancelled" and then tells me the app catalog is not available.

HELP PLEASE. I accidently deleted the old Preware. My sprint tech put it back on for me (thank GOD) I noticed there are package updates. Example ENABLE HIDDEN CLOCK. It says to remove and reinstall update. I tried butgot a IPKG log messageunder confirm it says,"user consent requested for pre-remove script execution". On the bottom it says Faild, errorGeneericMethodException: Failure durinig pre-remove script execution. ANY IDEA ANYONE? PLEASE.

mVampire is givin' me a problem. i try to download, it gets all the way to the end, then the tap button says "Download again for free"...anyone else?

my phone showed the free craigslist app had an update too...

Forbes Intelligent Investing is a great application. Very good information in it.

hey I have verizon & a customer service representative (phone in) told me they were getting the phone-that-shall-not-be-named on 12 December 09. bs?

It's possible but since all the other announcements from them have said Q1 2010 I doubt it.

yeah what I thot. sure hope not, I am seriously hoping the pre will come out 1st & do well. I would have expected a few more leaks by now if so. I called another rep and he promptly denied it. but why would they have just volunteered this info, I ask myself. kinda off topic, sorry, just had to get some opinion(s).

As a long time PalmOS developer and a current Pre user (with a smattering of WebOS development as well) I have some comments about the lack of "worthwhile" apps.

What a lot of people don't realize is that everything needed to build very good programs is already available. The people at webos-internals even have documentation on how to utilize lower level parts of the system. So why hasn't Palm "released the SDK?"

I really see one reason: security. In order for a WebOS app to take advantage of system features which are normally readilly available on other systems (such as connecting to an internet socket for say I don't know IRC chat) the developer must utilize a "service" that acts as sort of a gateway. The inherent danger with this is that if they aren't done right a simple chat client could be turned in to a very dangerous exploit to the root system.

Anyone that uses Preware for apps and patches probably sees how much more robust these options are and some of them even require a "service" to operate. I'm sure that once Palm comes up with a more sure fire way to ensure user written services are a little "safer" that we'll see them implemented and used.

Am I blind, or did Palm fail to include a changelog for their apps? I'd like to know exactly WHAT I'm updating..

App Catalog unavailable when I try to download =(

Again, some perspective regarding "crap apps". First, the App Cat is still in beta. Second, the "godPhone" launched June '07, and the app store not until JULY '08, had only 500 apps, and required the 2.0 OS.

We HAD apps available for download *at launch* (18 only but still better then 0) and Palm is releasing a decent stream of apps almost weekly.

If it's not out of BETA by end of December, then I'd say you could START b!tching but you'd still have another "6 months" to catch the lag Apple had on iPhone. ;)

I hate to tell you this, cobra, but it isn't 2007 any more. If Palm had intro'd the Pre in 2007, or even 2008 this kind of delay might have been fine, but it's almost 2010, and people are comparing it to the phones available now, and the Pre falls way short.

And while Palm may be releasing a "decent stream" they're not releasing decent applications. Most of these are junk.

I really wish BMI would just go away. Is it really that tough to measure body fat percentage-- an actual valid measure? Too many people use BMI because they're too lazy to use a useful measure.

WHATS THE POINT OF HAVING AN APP STORE IF I CAN"T EVEN DOWNLOAD IT!?

I'm going to complain about bad apps. There are some good ones. I bought quick contacts and word whirl. There will be more to come. Alot more good ones.
But, this Iphone comparison has to stop. That was 3 years ago when it launched. Palm is hanging on the webos. By your standards, it will always be behind the Iphone and it will just be acceptable. Well, it's not acceptable. Why should I or anyone else stay with the guy playing catchup? It is just unreasonable to still be making Iphone comparisons. Several years later.

Reset the phone, and you'll be able to download again.

Yawn. Double yawn. There's still nothing here of substance. When Palm announed the Pre, they said the ease of programming would generate huge numbers of apps. Well, maybe they'll be right some day, but if they're no better than what's available now no one will care.
