Thank you Derek. PreCentral has been critical to getting my app into the catalog.
Just wondering...is it because the Pre app catalog is still in beta that we don't have the amount of apps the "other app store" has?
No, it's because it took iTunes 3 years to get that many.
The other app store didn't exist for a whole year after the release of the phone. So, you can either see webOS as being thousands behinds, or 423 ahead. Really depends on your level of self esteem, or theirs.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
No. It's because 'the other app store' has been around three times longer. However, I'd expect a whole bunch of new apps when it finally leaves beta later this year.
I have a Pre and a Pixi. Any chance you can list which apps are compatible with which phone? An example is the app "Backgrounds." It is only available in the Pre App Catalog. Thanks.
Over time I have noticed this Blog has become negative, I'm not talking about the Pre hater's. But the likes of Derek. As a example "Going into yesterday evening we were prepared for Friday to be another app-less day" or "it still pales in comparison to that other mobile application store". These seem to be minor, but these type of comments are like the old method of torture a death by a thousand cuts. I listen to the Podcast, Derek is the first to get off subject. I'm not looking for a Cool Aid site like the Iphone Blog, just more support for the Pre.
Also more App reviews. CrapApps are starting fill the App Catelog just like Android and Apple. Just my daily rant
+1 He really does sounds like a Palm cynic most of the time. Maybe he rather be the editor of a different platform, but got stuck doing this one.
He just tells it how it is. I do agree that the CrapApps are taking over. Only a handfull of useful Apps that actually work. And now we have pFart...reeeaallllly?
Lets no forget what is going on here. Precentral is part of the Smartphone Experts group run by Deiter Bohn. The Smartphone Experts is a company and must have eyeballs to sell Ads and maintain a Accessory Store on each Site. So Hosts must be able to drive eyeballs to the Site, Derek does a good job, Derek & Deiter are in business to make money. I admire how Deiter has taken the Twit.tv model to the smartphone market and appears to have made a sucess of it.
I do feel that Derek is a little dark in his phrasing. Just remember the old saying Money talks and bull sheet walks. Derek makes money and we all supply the bull sheet
Derek speaks the truth. He does a great job. You want "support?" I don't even know what that means. Is that like a mother on the sideline giving support of a kids soccer game saying, "Johnny I support you?" "Come on Pre! I support you!" What good does that do. You just want want a Palm Pre cheerleader. I don't need someone pissing on my leg and telling me it's raining like most pre fanboys. Not me. I want the truth good or bad. Tell it like it is. And he does just that. And considering the caliber of apps released into the Palm Catalog seems we did have "another app-less day."
^^^For backgrounds you can go to http://www.mobile9.com/ The Pixi's screen is 320X400 whereas the Pre is 320X480 Mobile 9 has wallpaper for all sizes.
ok,ppl, it takes alot of balls for a company to just invent a new os, new phone, hell a new direction..... it takes time to sell a new idea, because ppl want to stay with what is comfortable. the icrap didnt start out this big. but now they seem to be the bar by wich everythingis compared. is it unfair ? maybe. as a pre owner i am thrilled with the wat the future brings. i am proud to be a part of something new and exciting. instead of following the masses. i for one will be rooted to my pre for as long as possible. i dont think any pre owner cares about wat the icrap app store has. we have a pre for a reason. a few tweaks here and there and were able to do alot with this phone. i applaude the devs.
and to the idiot who called us "oranges" .. go choke on an apple! we dont need or want "apple" lovers here any way.. this is a palm pre site ... leave it that way!
+1 I agree I wanted the Pre cause I honestly think it is the best mobile OS on the market. People cry apps apps apps. I want those people to tell me what apps they use constantly on a regular basis. The vast majority are going to say streaming music apps, weather, social networking etc. all of which the Pre has. People I like what the commenter said up above. We sit there and compare the Pre's App Catalog to the iPhonies App Store thinking it should have the 100,000 apps it does. But back to the reader up from here about depending on the way you look at it Palm is actually ahead of the iPhone when it was still 6 months old. Everyone needs to get off their high horse and pay your early termination fee and get out from your Pre contract if you have such problems with the amount of Apps in the catalog.
so... I'm unable to update my apps, and am also unable to download new apps. Anyone else having this issue?
Yep.
The update fails with a yellow triangle !
The App Catalog loads but doesn't let me browse, it just hangs on a blue screen with the loading circle.
Funny story, I was bummed about the lack of updates this week, so I posted a twitter status @Adora (Lisa Brewster) saying I hope they haven't run out of apps yet and what a blah week for the catalog. Like 10-15 minutes later, She responds to me with "Fixed that for ya :)" and all those new apps had just landed.. great stuff! Backgrounds app is amazing, could spend all day looking through it!
i'm just glad my favorite pr0n site works with pre.
holla
Why is almost every app in the catalog so horribly overpriced? Five dollars for a QUIZ ABOUT SAILING? It's honestly laughable. I'm also wondering why so many apps are stupidly named. Are the developers so self centered that they need their name in their app title? It' just looks stupid. I'm looking at you dolph1nk1ng, pFart, mCraig, and Deadman v1. I'm sorry but the App Catalog is just a joke as of now.
About the cost of the quiz apps: I honestly have no idea why they're so expensive, especially since at the prices they're asking for nobody in their right mind is going to pay for them. As Chris Rock once said, "Five dollars?! That's crack prices!"
Developers are putting their name in the name of the app for name recognition. dolph1nk1ng in particular should reconsider doing this, since most of his apps usually hit the app store in broken form.
I completely agree with you. Besides, basically every app in the app store you have to pay for it. And i hate that. It's likle every developer wants to live off of selling apps. I'm actually ok with paid apps, but, you know.. there should be a wide variation of free apps to make an app store stronger and bigger. Cause if they keep charging for every Sh%t they come up with, this app store is going down... I hope it doesn't. I barely use the app store. I am not paying for anything that's in there. 1st because no app is worth the money, and second, they are too expensive for the stupidity that they do.
I just use homebrews and patches, and that's how i live on with my Pre. I wish that someday the app store would have better things. But well, let's give it time. I really hope they use it well. (Time, Palm, Developers)
"Horribly Overpriced" as compared to what ? The App Developer set the price, why not cry to the Developer, if his/her App does not sell and if its a quality App the price will come down, a CrapApp is a CrapApp not matter the price.
Once you start down the road of cheap apps, Developers will makes his/her money by having many (some cases hundreds)of poor quality Apps at .99 to sucker you in. If the App is a CrapApp, you just say its only .99 and go on to another .99 App. This is the model at Apple and Anroid. Just another rant.
Horribly overpriced compared to the value they offer. At the Apple App Store I can buy Peggle for $0.99. I can buy METAL GEAR SOLID for $0.99. I can buy "I am T-Pain" for $2.99. The only things in the App Store that cost $4.99 or more are very sophisticated apps with very specialized functions that probably cost 100x as much money to develop as this stupid sailing quiz did. None of the Apps in the App Catalog are worth more than $0.99, period. (Except for some backup related ones like SplashID or Evernote.)
Just because these developers aren't directly competing with the App Store, it doesn't mean they they get to redesign the notion of "value." An app here should be priced the same as it would be over there.
Why should I cry to the developer? I wouldn't download 95% of the Apps in the App Catalog even if they were free! Palm needs to do something about the crap that's clogging up the app catalog because there is literally nothing in there worth looking at except for the games put out by Self Aware which are *SURPRISE, SURPRISE* free.
I knew you are a Iphone Troll, and you just proved it to the whole World. Go back you cool aid drinker
Seriously? Because I can see that the App Catalog is an unorganized joke when compared to the established App Store I must be an iPhone Troll? Strange considering I own a Pre and would never even consider owning an iPhone. I guess that Pre ownership requires that I love every aspect about the phone, including those that are substandard?
What Kool-Aid am I drinking? The App Store is better than the App Catalog. That's not even open for discussion, and if you're willing to argue the opposite then you're a moron. The Pre is currently the best phone on the market but if Palm doesn't get their act together with respect to the Catalog then webOS is going to be a flop. I hope this isn't the case, and unlike you I'm willing to criticize them when they're in need of criticism.
yep. you get much more value for money in the ipod store. too bad the guy above just likes name calling. You speak the truth though. he's one of those anything bad about the pre is a basher or a troll. That's no different then the ipod fanboys. Now it's just pre.
Ok. Let's stop talking about crap apps. Let's turn this around and talk about the apps you do like, and WHY you like them. Give us developer's more to go on, and get a consensus of what is working for people.
The app catalog is young, very young. We will not get the really great apps until the SDK get's better. That's a fact, and not much us dev's can do about it.
So, let's get a jump on what apps you want, why you want them, and what you would like to see them do. No more criticisms, let's be constructive.
To be honest...I'd like to see more support from big companies, not the developers who hang out on Precentral, no offense. I wanna see a Bank of America app, Google Earth, Skype, Shazam...apps from the bigger names. Those brands are what will help the Pre. It's great that we have apps from up-and-coming developers, but Conniption Entertainment's Zombie Invasion is never going to be as cool as Metal Gear Solid or the recently released Star Wars: Trench Run. Until the Pre gets that kind of support...our app catalog fails.
