New in the App Catalog for 05 January 2010

App CatalogWhile yesterday’s large app drop didn’t bring anything new to the App Catalog, it did bring a whole slew of updates as we power forward to Palm’s CES presentation on Thursday, otherwise known as tomorrow (!). But a bunch of updates is nothing to sneeze at. Something to remember is now that the app limit has been fixed, applications can be of much larger sizes without worrying about taking up all available space. What that means for the end user is applications with richer graphics and sounds. We’ve got the list of that stuff all after the break.

Updated Apps:

  • Belch N Burp for WebOS, $0.99
  • Calculator, $1.49
  • Camera Fun!, $1.99
  • Card Ace: Hold ‘Em, Free
  • Colors, Free

I'll be glad when we get some apps that are not based on text, you know just plain ol fun apps...or graphic intensive ones.

Oho, Mosquitones. Now where have I read that before? :P I predict NFS very soon.

As awesome as the iFart pro and Random Numbers apps are (sarcasm) Is the Pre ever going to have useful apps that adults use? People have the Pre because they don't want to play bullshit games like on the iPhone.

SalesForce.com app? Is that ever going to come out?

What about a Tumblr app?

Do we have these and I just have missed them while browsing through the catalog?

I didn't get the pre because i don't want to play games. I got the pre because i like sprint and don't want to change and i think webOS will be great. I want some useful apps, but also i want games when i have free time like today when i went to the DMV and sat for 4 hours. I want to enjoy everything about my phone, for work and for playing around. Why can't adults use/enjoy games. I'm 30 years old and i'm not much of a gamer (i don't have an xbox or anything) but damnit if i'm bored and want to pull out my phone to kill some time i want to be able to do that with all the glory that made the iphone as popular as it is.

Sitting at the DMV for 4 hours playing games...what did you do when your battery died after hour #3?

I enjoy some of the word games and even Tic Tac Toe (the free one!) with my daughters, but my battery drains too quickly!!

I went into DMV with a full batt, since whenever i get in my truck the pre goes right onto the car charger everytime. I was surprised how well my batt did I still had a 72% charge on it when they called my number. Since 1.3.5 I've had awesome batt performance. I also have the 1350 mAh batt.

I like tilt gt, paratroopers, and doom. NFS would be awesome, but the games i really want is the air traffic control game thats on the iphone, and a good tower defense game. Those aren't real graphic intense so i don't know why we don't have any games like those yet on the pre.

I agree. Since 1.3.5 I've had MUCH better battery life!

I agree, games are important too. I want useful apps but also something to get me through when I have to go wait somewhere for hours. As for the battery, my phone does okay, and it has the original battery.

I'd like to see last.fm, KeePass, Remember the Milk and DropBox apps. That's all I long for.

I'm with you there. let's see something besides iphone store dregs. Course we've not been long out of the app limit, too, but I'm definately ready for some data crunching apps that work for a living.

what time is palm show tomorrow? So I know when to stalk precentral

Palm's presentation is at 11am Pacific

Derek is there any way where you can maybe ok post your daily thread of the app catalog and for the app's that have updates. Maybe, just maybe later in the day you can update it with detail on what the updates actually do? I mean Im not trying to take anything away from you cause you are doing a great job btw.. Just a thought..

That would require that I (1) download/buy every app, which we're not about to do. And (2) it would require that developers release changelogs for their app updates, which it seems most do not. I can only work with the information at hand.

I see, its strange because app on homebrew ex. Filecoaster when there and update you scroll down and their stated there. But once that app goes over to the offical app store. Poof no more details. Hopefully Palm will do something about it, maybe like when you tap on the dev's site link it could be stated there or something. Oh well no biggie. But thanx again for your response..

Yeah I think Palm should add a new link at the bottom of the app page for "Change Log". For most apps in the catalog you just don't know what the changes are. I know I always get all giddy when one of the apps I use is updated, but then I load the app and never can figure out what the changes were.

One of the apps that updated today, Picasa on Phone, did have their changes mentioned in their app description, so that was nice.

In my GeoStrings app I plan on doing a few things to help inform customers of the changes:

- On the app's help page is a selection for bringing up the change log.

- On my website I'll be posting the change log.

- A dialog box will be displayed the first time the user runs a new version of the app that will allow the user to display the change log.

- I'll probably post a new video on my youtube channel describing any significant changes to the app. The description of the video will include a link to the full change log.

This guy (DanPLC), knows how to build a great app! (Some/most of these features should be used by all app catalog devs.)

Word Ace & Card Ace v.1.1 add in-game gifts that you can buy with chips. From a mug of coffee to a bottle of poison, there's a variety of things you can get for people you like (and people you don't).

If you haven't updated in a little while, there are also now in-game player ratings, and an expanded player info popup. Like someone you're playing with? Give 'em a thumbs up, and everyone else will know they're a good player. Hate someone? Give 'em a thumbs down - they'll never know it happened, but if they get enough, we'll take a look and see why people don't like 'em.

With the new player info popup, you can quickly see other players' recent awards, best hands, and in Word Ace, their average word score.

If it's been a while since you updated, you may have also missed out on auto-actions in Card Ace! One of the most demanded features was a way to speed up gameplay in Card Ace. With auto-actions, you can select to fold, check, or check/fold prior to your turn. So if you're multitasking, it's even easier to keep up with the game!

Donations will also be coming online soon with the latest update - so if a player donates to help support the game, they'll get a star by their profile for 30 days to show that they're the ones who are keeping the game running!

Please download 1.1 today - in addition to all the new features, there are a handful of performance optimizations and tweaks that make the game an even better experience! For further information on the new features, please check out the "How to Play" section from the main menu for additional details. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask in the forums here at precentral!

Thanks!

@NYSportsGuy - if you want to post on tumblr, pictures, movies, or text, there is an app that will do that for tumblr and many other blog sites and social networks. "Pixelpipe Uploader".

Thanks Ed. I actually did see that app after searching "tumblr" The reason why I did not DL yet is because I have not launched my Tumblr site yet and because I was hoping for what seemed like a more formal and expansive app to be released.

I will try if there is still nothing by the time the site launches in the next few weeks (www.lolnyc.com in case you were wondering)

Could the onslaught of app updates be in preparation for another OS upgrade to be announced at CES?

Developers?

Anybody?

Beuller?

It seems like there is a lot of vulgar noise making programs available. 4 in this new batch!

I just find that strange!?!?

Extraclass

Well, doesn't Ares makes it really easy to make this kind of app? You know, push this button and something happens.

iFart Pro not only makes noise; it claims to have the ability to silence a fart and discreetly pipe it up to 15 feet away.

For anyone who reads down this far, the new versions of Card Ace and Word Ace have the ability to buy gifts for players at your table. Because playing poker without drinks just isn't the same.

Im from London and i need TUBE MAP APP!!! also a regular train times one would be good, both updating service announcements etc... but mainly a tube map, less fart apps i think we have just about enough of those, hmm maybe we could do with one more -_-.

where to find TVMCalc anyboby know???
