New in the App Catalog for 02 November 2009

App CatalogThree measly updates? Everybody join us in a giant sigh. Sigh.

PhotoDialer is not free...$1.99 But ya, sigh.

You know, I saw that, I noted it, and then I forgot. Me am real smrts.

Are "measly updates" the new thing to whine about? Seems like just yesterday it was about paid apps in the catalog.

Pandora now has ads! :(

On the screen or in the audio?

It's on the screen. It covers the progress bar for the song. You can X it away for a song but it comes back.

Personally, I don't care. It's pretty small, doesn't interrupt the audio and hey...its free.

Looks like I wont be using that anymore!

How else do you expect them to pay for a free service?

My apologies because I did not make it clear! For how little I use Pandora and how much I dislike ad-supported apps (especially when they just pull a switch like this), I have no problem discontinuing the use of their service. It's just my preference though - plain and simple.

Pandora got a whole lot faster, but they're actually limiting your skips now to 6 an hour. I haven't noticed an ad yet, but I can deal with ads if I don't have to deal with a minute between songs. Slacker still blows Pandora out of the water IMO.

I tried to update Pandora and got the Out of memory error...so, can't even update. But with ads, I may hold off...will there be a point when they force you to update?

You beat me to it... I was about to say that the number of apps released isn't a huge deal because we can't install them anyway! Darned "out of memory" error. =)

New Pandora definitely seems faster. It would be nice if the play/thumbs-up/thumbs-down buttons on the lock screen actually worked though. Why are they even there if I have to unlock the screen to use them? Lame.

Updates gave me the ol' yellow triangle ! when I did and "install now" for Photo Dialer which I have bought and successfully used? Huh!?

I want accuradio to speed up, not Pandora!

Does anyone else find that Pandora does not work with WiFi turned on? It was like that for me before the update, and after. Just wondering if anyone else is having that same issue.

Pandora is working fine over WiFi right now :-)

Perhaps a restart for your phone?

Also, Don't think I will be updating Pandora under the circumstances. Works great as-is. Unless they add additional features i can't see a reason to update.

what ads are people talking about? I get no ads what so ever on pandora. Oh and it works great on wifi, perhaps it's your connection that's causing you problems and not pandora.

yes I updated to v 1.0 yesterday for those who might still be wondering

Re: Pandora not working on WiFi - are you using your own personal WiFi, or some corporate WiFi? If it is the later, perhaps the Pandora site is being blocked by the corporation supplying the WiFi for bandwidth reasons. I know many companies have that site blocked to free up bandwidth for work-related activities.

Right now I'm using my corporate WiFi, but I've had the same problem on at least 3 other WiFi systems, including my home wireless network. I'll try restarting my phone, but I swear I've restarted for other reasons, and still have the WiFi/Pandora issue.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

New apps are pointless if you can't add/buy them. Now even Fair Dinkum doesn't work for me and I have less than 100 apps on my phone.

I can't get the $1.99 Photo Dialer update, because I already had the free Photo Dialer :-(

That sucks!

Just uninstall it from your phone, then go into the App Catalog. Will let you buy it then.

Strange, when I did the check for updates it found the photodialer but would not let me load. I went to the app catalog and found photodialer it let me update, I thought it would ask me to pay (I would it's an app I use all the time and think it's worth it to me) but it seemed to update and it's running fine. I really don't want to remove and reinstall I have it set up the way I like. although the new feature (SMS support) makes it so you have to remove and put back the numbers you want to use texting for.

Ahh, so if you downloaded the free version from the app catalog, you can update now. If you installed the homebrew version, then you have to uninstall and buy it. Looks like the authentication is whether or not you downloaded the app previously from Palm App Catalog or not -- so free apps that went paid (solely through app catalog) should let you upgrade without paying.

Fair Dinkum was absorbed into the package manager service.

I've used preware for awhile now and it is current... having problems installing apps AND updating... even deleting apps that are seldom used but wanted, STILL get the "out of memory" error...

If you already downloaded the free version of PhotoDialer from the app store you should be able to get the update for free. Cardinal Peak decided to give all of the users of the beta version of PhotoDialer the app for free. If it did not download for you it is likely a problem with the App Catalog.

Palm should track downloaded app id's and provide the ability for you to update your app.

If you had already downloaded the free app then I hope you enjoy usage of the now pay app. We wanted to thank all of the users that helped us with feedback and support for our app and free seemed the best way to do that. I hope the new SMS support and polished interface make it attractive for new users as well.

I wish they would approve more apps - SplashID has apparently been in for Palm's approval since before the app store launched, and we *still* don't have the new version in the wild! Come on Palm - this is just silly...

The most recent release of PhotoDialer took 5 weeks to get pushed to the App Catalog and required no changes after product review. I met with a lot of the team while I was at the Sprint Developers Conference and they are really still focusing on building up the team and process while they are in the E-commerce beta for the App Catalog. I think they are trying to be prepared for their more formal roll out later this year.

Since yesterday when I read the post on free upgrade to PhotoDialer, every time I hit update available it starts off saying downloading then download cancelled and screen says app catalog unavailable. Try again later. The update page in app catalog says stopwattch/timer also has one. I get same messages there. Anyone else have that problem? I took battery out nothing. I still can't update either of them.

Since they incorporated Fair Dinkum (or the features that it had) into the new version of the Package Manager, and told us to remove Fair Dinkum, I've been getting the out of memory messages from the App Catalog again. Just thought I'd share.
