Missing Sync for Windows Pre-Release Available

Well, that was fast.  Just a week after Mark/Space posted up their development tracker for the Windows Version of their Missing Sync software, they have made a Pre-Release version of the software available for download.

It doesn't work with Vista, at all, so don't try it unless you like bags of hurt.  It does sync over WiFi (not USB), and there are a host of other pre-release issues to contend with.  Knowing Mark/Space, the issues will be sorted out in short order, but if you enjoy testing stuff, take a look at the list of pending issues first and then mosey over to the download page.

Good on Mark/Space for making the Pre-Release build available because of the popular demand - if you give it a shot, please be sure to provide them with as much helpful feedback as possible (emails whose contents consist of "It doesn't work" or that recapitulate the known bugs don't count).

Just like Echo, this still doesn't work with your existing "Palm Profile" account. Will there ever be a sync program that allows both OTA Backups via Palm Profile and local sync of my data?

Yes! The Pre is becoming better and better every day!

Can we get a sync tool that works with USB PLEASE!!! What's up with all the WIFI only syncing methods? I would like to be able to sync my phone on the road without WIFI. Is this too much to ask?

If you look at the documentation included with the software, they talk about being able to sync some of the data via USB. I would expect more on the way from Mark/Space.

I am sure this is in the pipeline but not working on Vista/W7 is going to be a problem for many as we are running Vista. XP support has been dropped so I would have expected a Vista version.

It states above "does not work with Vista", nowhere does it say does not work with Win7....anyone tested yet? These OS (Vista and Win7) are very similar..BUT very different...so it could work on Win7 and not Vista...at work so can't test out my theory yet but I wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't get to work on Win7, even if in XP Compatibility mode.

I would think Win 7 is much more like Vista than with XP. It should work in Win 7 XP mode though.

Does anybody know if this includes an option to sync multiple contacts folders? I have public contacts folder at work and currently the only way I can sync these cotacts is via google.

This is a joke, right? Is it April 1st? The calendar "sync" over-writes the Pre with data from Outlook? That's not sync, it's data destruction. It makes your Pre calendar a veiw-only device, with the ability to add appointments made worthless.

And it sounds like the Contacts sync works the same way, since it tries to "first delete all the records."

Even for a pre-release version, that's absurd. Mark Space should have waited before releasing this.

And it doesn't sync tasks or notes, either. Since none of the other sync solutions do this either, it would appear Palm hasn't provided this capability in the SDK. That's sad.

If I had to sync to a single PC again I would curl up into a little ball and cry. Talk about a step backward in the wrong direction. What is the point of having a internet / cloud device if your data is in jail someplace on a single pc.

I really don't understand why Tasks and Notes have
been totally left out in the cold by Palm and everyone else
with regard to sync. I have dozens of persistent "to-do"
checkists I use again and again (what to pack for trips
and re-usable grocery/supply lists, pre-flight check lists
and so forth) on my old Treo 600 synced to Outlook and
I simply can't get them into my Pre and even if I did,
I couldn't keep them synced with *anything*. Grrr.

Mainly because neither tasks nor (especially) notes are supported by the major 3rd party cloud technologies used by Palm, namely Exchange ActiveSync and Google. Someone is going to have to either create a cloud-based conduit or (as I've tried to suggest to MotionApps) leverage something like HotSync to connect the Pre to the desktop directly for memos/notes syncing, whether by USB, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. I desperately need a real Memos app on my Pre that syncs properly with Outlook Notes, and can only hope that *some* developer out there is going to launch one soon. {ProfJonathan}

Yawn

HAHA is it going to be $39.99 like their other sync apps for other platforms? Gee sounds like it was a plan cooked up by Chapura to get people to think theirs isn't so bad for only $30.

Look people palm shouldve taken its time with this device! Period! The battery stinks! Palm did everything in its power to have us deal with their stupid business ideas that does nothing but frustrate the life out of its customers!
1. Just do something simple like having the customer back up their own info
2. Have simple things like spell check
3. Have a battery that doesn't die like obamas approval ratings!
4. Taking a page out of blackberry and iphones app catalog! Meaning.. Knowing how they are running their apps y couldn't they do that but better! Why have us just sit around and fiddle our thumbs around like lost people!
All in all I'm sick of palm not thinking things throug and having us wait for a good, well rounded product!

I really hope you people understand my pain!

'Guess Palm will just have to wonder how many they would have sold if it actually was a Palm. No memo-sync = deal breaker. What device represented the best evolution of Palm, that still included all 4 PIM functions? I'm still in Win Mobile pain.

Agreed! Palm did a nice job on the WebOS UI, but on sync they really threw the baby out with the bathwater. There seem to be a few people who want cloud sync, more power to them. But as noted there are very few app/data types available in the cloud now. And of course your data is then at the mercy of hackers, etc.

If Palm wants to go after the cloud for those who want it, fine. But _what_ were they thinking in throwing away the compellingly useful local sync which they built their company on? Just replacing the lame Treo sync connector with a standard USB connector would have done fine, and they already have (mostly) functional desktop software.

I spent about 40 minutes on the phone with Palm Corporate this morning apparently they have no idea if they are even working on long known issues such as voice dial, text forwarding, being able to save a video clip or other file sent via mms (other than a picture) etc.. there is about a 200 point list on Sprints own pre forum of things that do not work on the Pre that work on nearly every other phone sold. Since after 40 minutes on the phone with Palm they seem to be saying they are not really putting much into supporting or advancing the device I am seeking to return it to Sprint. I strongly recommend that anyone who is within their 30 trial period to also return the phone, since absolutely NONE of the updates that various Sprint sales people promised have happened in over 2 months.
