Talk about a flash from the past! In an unexpected turn of events, Ha-me3 in our forums is reporting that he was able to get Little John PalmOS (LJP) to run on the Pre via the Classic emulator. LJP, if you don't know, is an emulator for the original Nintendo Entertainment System.
Ha-me3 says that while playing an NES game, LJP reported a solid 60FPS, however it appeared lower, possibly indicating Classic wasn't displaying every frame outputted by LJP. And in order to play the roms, he had to manually create the tree of folders to have the directory structure /PALM/Programs/LJP/NES/Roms exist.
All is not working fully, though. It appears that, while an initial press of the virtual 5-way pad registers, holding the virtual button down after that initial press does nothing. Add to that, Classic v1.0 doesn't support sound (though v1.1 will) and the game experience isn't quite as fully functional as we'd like. Hopefully future versions of Classic will support LJP better, perhaps with button mapping. Until then, this is certainly a great start.
Kind of funny to see an emulator inside an emulator, but I'm certainly not complaining.

Yo dawg...
So how do I download the NES emulator onto the palm os emulator?
This is cool...except that Classic costs $30.
$30 is a little steep to pay to run all of my old (and hopefully soon to be obsolete) applications, but combined with a huge collection of NES ROMS that definitely creates $30 in value. I will however, be waiting for key mapping support and sound before jumping on the bandwaggon.
Even nicer would be an emulator in native WebOS form (I'd pay for that!) but who knows how long that will take to produce.
would much rather see native emulators for webOS
doom is already floating around if you check youtube so emulators shouldnt be far behind.
btw, I'd like to note that I was correct
back in the day I stated
----
If Palm is able to integrate flash support as deeply into the OS as they've done with HTML5, CSS, and javascript, then I have high hopes.
if they do that, it's no longer flash. flash is a cross platform specification. what you are saying is that they wont be shipping flash.
anyways, you are close to being correct. they support plugins that support the netscape plugin api.
therefore, the way game will be supported will be via a plugin that provides an SDL like canvas to work with.
----
classic is implemented as a browser plugin. I'd modify my statement of flash being extended, as I can imagine it would be now, but don't think that's really a big deal. interesting games aren't going to be written in flash.
interesting games can be written as a browser plugin (all the plugin does is provide a litle wrapper so the native app fits in the browser context, ala acrobat plugin, just wraps the native acrobat app on all platforms)
oh, and as a followup, this is why the doom game posted to predev is not really interesting, as it requires you kill the webos ui, and run on the framebuffer. If it were written as a browser plugin, and have the mojo wrapping and work as a card, that be very interesting.
haha cool! my pre made the headlines. But yeah, I too rather have a native emulator for the pre. I do know that the creative minds behind LJP is working on a new version called LJX, hopefully someone could port it to WebOS afterwards. but for now, emulation on an emulator will have to do >.<
btw, LJP is not only an emulator for NES, but also for SNES, GEN, SMS, Game gear, GB/GBC, Wonder Swan 2600, and Neogeo pocket.
The virtual 5-way pad doesn't work at all, when i said on screen buttons I meant the 4 over the game window that LJP allows for you to map. But yeah, games aren't really playable when you have a total of 4 buttons.
:-)
Hey, it's a great start! Next step: native emulator, I hope! :)
An emulator within an emulator? Technology is certainely getting advanced these days.
How to build a shed
now that 1.1 is out, can someone explain how to configure the buttons? i can get an NES rom to start (SNES won't even start) but when i try to configure the buttons, when i hit keys on the physical keypad nothing happens, and i only get one of 4 virtual buttons in the corners of the classic screen.
thanks to anyone in advance who can help with this.
Will and nes emulator ever come out? I check the internet daily for any news on an update about nes on the palm pre! I can't wait to see it! Hope someone out there is working hard so veryone can enjoy their old favs!
